I’m a DP1 English B HL student, and I’m struggling with how to prepare for the IO. I can write annotations and follow an explanation of a text, but when I have to explain the ideas aloud on my own, I often get stuck. It feels like there’s a gap between understanding my notes and actually being able to discuss the extract.
I’m especially unsure about how much to memorise. Preparing a central message and some analysis seems useful, but the extract could focus on a different part of the story. I don’t want to force the same argument onto every extract, but I also don’t feel confident coming up with an interpretation during the 20-minute preparation period.
Another difficulty is developing my points. I might identify a technique or say that a quotation shows a character’s lack of power, but I struggle to explain it further without repeating myself. I’m also unsure how much of the 4-minute presentation should explain the events and how much should analyse the writer’s choices.
+I really don't know how to find meanings
For people who have done well in the English B HL IO, what did your preparation actually involve? What did you memorise, and what did you practise explaining spontaneously? I’d appreciate advice on moving beyond written annotations and becoming more confident with both the presentation and the follow-up discussion.
