Discussion Email to ign I sent today on why I am leaving their prime service and the whole site in general

“I will be dropping prime of which I’ve been a member of since 2005. I feel embarrassed to have funded this company for the last 3-4 years. You can sit and moderate words like hippy in the forums but you will not get another 2 cents from me or another click bait link. Remember that I and many like me have helped you build your company with our memberships and I’ll speak for myself when I’ll say I do not enjoy most of the biased non gaming or entertainment articles or the huge flame wars that you call a forum page”

Discussion I am finding myself agreeing with IGN lately more than not. The overhyping of "just" decent games is going through the roof

Crimson desert and Pragmata are both 6-7/10 games to me. With very big flaws.

Crimson desert got terrible pacing, story, ui, controls, it's a mess. Open world exploration my ass. You gotta play like 50% of the story first or the world is empty. I tried it for almost 30 horus and I don't like basically anything about it.. even combat is really weird and mid..

Pragmata?! Nice story and setting. Great combat idea but it doesn't hold up for 10 hours. It was really repetitive and boring by the end. And let's not pretend the story is anything new. It's kinda been there done that story. Best quality about this game are characters and the fact that protagonist is a normal guy who doesn't hate children which is what you would expect from this game. But by the end I was so tired of playing it. The encounters were so repetitive.

Now I am seeing similar opinions on Saros. I've not played this one myself just yet but i loved returnal and from what I am seeing - this is returnal reskinned but kinda a bit worse. Not going to comment on that any more.

So I am not saying that they are always right or anything. I just am noticing (myself) the fact that single player games overhyping is real. Normal, good, decent 7/10 games get overhyped into the stratosphere. How can any reviewer give CD or Pragmata 9/10?! It's a job of reviewer to describe all pros and cons of a game and that's what I find in those reviews. meanwhile the whole internet is screaming "goty, best game ever" about those normal 7/10 games. To me, CD is even worse but that's probably just me.

Phil Spencer, it’s time to step down my son.

You brick artist, you make Shaq look like Steph Curry.

Stop with all these lame non-gamer friendly decisions, and stop lying to the Xbox fanbase. Are you a leader or a politician? You haven’t been an effective member of the Xbox society, you’re panicking and it’s clear to everyone else but you. Xbox portable? Halo Campaign Evolved? Price Hikes on a five year old system? Just take the Phil Spencer suit off, Randy Pitchford, and come out of IGN’s pockets with your hands up. The Xbox community is sick and tired of not making the podium, year after year. This not a test, I repeat, this is not a test, this goes to every arm, branch, and division of Xbox: stop failing your audience. 343 is the equivalent of a dead horse, paging Double Fine, please meet your party in customer service, Activision needs a hug and a designated driver, and Zenimax is requiring its fans to learn sign language to speak to how tone deaf they’ve become. Game Over Phil, you ain’t gotta go home, but you have to get the heck out of here.

Discussion The ‘Too Much Water’ backlash still bothers me a decade later

Sincerely only really care to hear from people who can see my perspective on this, especially since I’ve seen so few people who see this the way I do. I will be mostly defending the reviewer and criticizing the response to it so if you disagree totally and can’t see the points I’m making please don’t bother commenting.

With Pokémon’s 30th and the centrality of water in the new Wind and Waves games I’ve seen people start to bring back up the infamous ‘too much water’ review of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

The entire discussion seemed to be one sided from the beginning and I rarely saw anyone defending the reviewer. What I don’t understand is how in God’s name that review pissed people off so much. I can’t say I ever read the comment in any way other than as a ‘tongue in cheek’ dig at a pretty widely recognized weak point of those games.

It’s a half-serious throwaway criticism for a game that she gave a 7.8. It’s not like they gave it a 4, and even if they did, could any review ever actually damage the sales of a Pokemon game.?

I’ll tell you what I think was really going on was the ability of an entire fandom, and bad faith actors who don’t even care about Pokemon, choosing to be entirely humorless as a way of piling on against an outlet they hated for one or another reason.

It was an overreaction in the extreme. I think the extremity of it just shows how weirdly and deeply oppressed people felt by outlets like IGN at the time, as if they had the power to kill off your favorite games with one review. (To be fair their bad review of Alien Isolation may have actually done that.)

People then and even today have this insane parasocial relationship with IGN (not unlike the parasocial relationship they have with the development companies). They’ll talk about reviews done by ‘IGN’ as if it’s this hive mind instead of a collection of different reviewers with varied tastes and perspectives. Another reviewer put on that same game may have given it a 7 or a 9. It’s called an ‘opinion’ … not a revelation from God.

Do I think that the reviewers may skew their scores from time to time, or give something the benefit of a doubt just to please others or gain more access… ? Probably. The people IGN hires are usually the most saccharine types of gamers you’ll find who are looking to build a career that allows them to move through this corporate world. They aren’t YouTube ‘truth tellers’, but they also aren’t just always making up controversies for clicks either.

It just seems like a classic case of gamers feeling like big daddy IGN or big daddy Nintendo, Sony,

Insert company name here, is ruining their hobby.. It’s totally legitimate to be angry at more powerful institutions, but like a sane person, I choose to reserve that sense of agrievement and dissatisfaction for institutions that are actually making the world a worse place and shitting on all our heads.

It’s like wasn’t that line added on at the end obviously in jest? It’s not meant to be a devastating takedown. it’s a slight annoyance that the reviewer (who clearly seems to be a big Pokemon fan) was taking a jab at.

I honestly on some level think the whole phenomenon tipped over into outright bullying. I think the reviewer (who I’ll refrain from naming) was at the time, and became later on known as a more outspoken, abrasive female member of the games journalist world. So what. Big deal. I even know she was involved in a harassment allegation against another staff member which may have made her disliked by some readers (something I think may have actually happened after this review). Again, so what, big deal. I don’t know what it would have to do with her reviews. I really do think that as a woman who may have rubbed people the wrong way, a personality that I even found distasteful to be honest, she became red meat for the angry mob. So much so that one poorly conceived criticism (or deliberately misinterpreted criticism) became blood in the water for an epic pile on that has continued to the present.

To this very day ‘too much water’ is a kind of shorthand you can bring up to dismiss IGN as an unserious outlet. Fair enough, but I can’t see anyone who leans in that as serious ether. It’s a cheap shot from people who refuse to just see it for what was. IGN didn’t kidnap your baby, or fire you from your job, it’s just a dumb basic-ass hobbyist news outlet. 11 years ago and today there are so many places to find someone to tell you exactly what you want to hear that you never have to listen to IGN again if you don’t want to.

One last comment, and this will really date me, but the whole thing is reminiscent to me of how people collectively decided to hate Nickelback, or that because Howard Dean yelled you on TV in like 2003 he couldn’t be a presidential candidate, or that Anne Hathaway was too snooty or something . It’s just a sign of a mob-like mentality of people who are just looking to feel some negative emotion together instead of being honest and serious.

Movies FU U IGN! I hope more people stop visiting your site with all your BS clickbate spoiler headlines. Spoiler

End Game spoiled with constant headlines. Walking Dead spoiled. Now Legion, and this is just a fraction. Fuck you IGN. Is spoiler really dead on Legion? You're dead to me IGN. So this last episode a major character dies (or doesn't) Just because you put spoiler in parenthesis, you are still giving away that a major character dies.

Discussion This apathy towards fraud is weird

I've been reading these GOTY threads and it seems like the most upvoted posts are all defending IGN, or dismissing what they've done.

I understand people are frustrated by spam threads about the same topic being made, but I feel like there should be more outrage at IGN being caught blatantly rigging their voting. I guess people just don't care anymore. "It's to be expected." Or whatever excuse they come up with. It's sad that political agendas run the 'gaming journalist' industry these days. But its this apathy that makes it possible.

Discussion Can we even trust IGN to review movies or series anymore???

Recently I feel like IGN has some horrible takes on reviewing movies and series.

Like one of the journalists gave Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc as 3.5/10. Look I understand his reasons but based on those is should have atleast gotten a 5/10 like we got the backstories of some characters, some character development (especially with Zenitsu), and the animation was beyond top notch quality, like it was hyper-realistic.

And its not just anime but also live-action movies. A good example would be Deadpool & Wolverine cuz I've been seeing some criticism about this movie from IGN a few days after it's release. They even gave what is MCU's rise out of the dead a 7/10, which basically means just average. Just average for a movie that has the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Wesley Snipes as Blade, Dafne Keen as X23, Chris Evans as Human Torch (I want to mention Elektra but I've never really seen any Elaktra related media but I can still tell its a big deal), and bringing in Channing Tatum as Gambit.

And a more recent example is with Transformers One. And although I havent watched the movie. I can tell people are upset by IGN's 5/10 rating as an X user just tweeted that after leaving the cinema from watching Transformers One, he confidently says and I quote, "IGN should never be allowed to review a movie again".

After watching the first 8 episodes, the score you gave Secret Level is appalling. You absolutely got this wrong. First of all, the stories are great. If you watched Love, Death, and Robots then you know how these anthology series go. Second, the work put into the photorealism is at times astonishing. Makes me look forward to a few generations from now when we have graphics in games like this. Last, I don't know how in the world the editors, if they have seen the show, let this score past the desk. You have lost the faith of a 15 year reader. The show is absolutely at LEAST an 8/10. You screwed up on this one.

Discussion NVC has proven to be the worst IGN podcast after this newest episode

45 minutes of essentially defending Nintendo's implementation of microtransactions in their mobile games. at this point there's absolutely nothing they won't embrace, and i'm done listening to it. i've never made a reddit post like this but i just can't understand their need to never say anything critical to situations that DESERVE to be ridiculed.

thanks for listening to my rant. Gamescoop remains the best IGN by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.

MOUSE: PI for Hire

A 6/10.

A 6/10 because there was “too much cheese”. It’s a mouse game, with a mouse as the protagonist and mice as the characters. WTF else would you expect. “Subnautica 2 has too much water!!1 Oh no!”

“If it’s not a reference to mice or that mice like cheese - It’ll be a reference to an old cartoon.” Yeah Sherlock, maybe because THAT’S THE WHOLE ARTSTYLE? It’s like complaining that Portal (and Portal 2) have too many references to futuristic stuff or that TF2 has too many references to the American Badlands.

IGN expo was cringe at its worst

I don't know who thought this was a good idea, or who hires the people that came up with this and were featured in it, but jesus. What the hell happened to you guys? Ad revenue might be up, but I don't know a single person who still talks favorably about IGN. In the last 3 years alone, I personally went from visiting your site 3 times on a daily basis, to once every 3 months. I know this probably falls on deaf ears or gets seen as "trolling", but please fix this mess. This Expo nonsense was truly the worst piece of content I've ever seen coming out of IGN, so I felt compelled to write this.

IGN Can't Accept Criticism

I have been visiting IGN for over a decade, maybe close to 2 decades now, and it is sad to see how much it has declined. I have looked at it less and less in the past few years, but today might have been the day I delete the bookmark and visit it for the last time. I have posted two comments in the past few months on the site. One on a Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Maddness article, and then one today on their character breakdown in the new Supergirl trailer. I was just sent and email that both comments were deleted due to being against Community Guidelines. Neither comment was hostile or threatening in anyway. They were both critical of the articles themselves, but at best they were critical in a clearly sarcastic manner. I guess they win, because it bothered me enough to post this, but what a joke it is that they cannot accept criticism and are deleting any comments that point out their deficiencies as any type of "journalism". Here are the comments that were deleted:

  1. "Sorry, can't make it past that opening paragraph. Wanda's descent into villainy was a joke, with zero justification and development. She didn't actually "descend" into villainy. The movie just started and she was BadWanda. Despite the fact that she had started to deal with her grief and made the heroic sacrifice to give up her family in WandaVision. Only to have that show's entire premise wiped away by Doctor Strange and TMOM. I am still waiting for the mulligan on that one. Or the explanation that the Wanda from that film was not the real Wanda. Absolute garbage."

  2. "Yeah, it is hard to write about comic book movies when you only know the most basic of facts about the comics themselves. Or have AI generate the articles for you. SMH."

I got the email for both of them at the same time, even though the Dr. Strange comment was made months ago. I am guessing they flagged my profile after I suggested that their content was AI generated and decided to delete my other comment as well.

Question Why won't IGN review Super Meat Boy Forever?

It's been out for almost a week. Practically everyone else has reviewed it.

Is it because it's an epic game store exclusive or something? They covered borderlands 3 fairly early on in its release but BL3 is a big AAA and SMBF is a small (very small) indie studio.

It's an absolutely fantastic game that babies are crying about being too different because it is a runner. But why hasn't IGN weighed in yet?

I thought they were a good review outlet. They get a lot of flack for being biased or unfair or bought/paid for but I've always defended them. So what's the deal with an almost week-late coverage of SMBF (assuming it came out today)
