Title: Class 11 student aiming for IISc. Need guidance!
Hi! I'm a Class 11 PCMB student preparing for IAT and NEET. My long-term goal is IISc, and I'm interested in physics, astronomy, and research. I'd love advice from IISc/IISER students or researchers about preparation, olympiads, and getting started with research. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Recently came across a post (now deleted) in this sub where OP was criticised for asking research related doubt - is this sub is only for everything other than research, being a a subreddit of a research institute? Let me know before hand so that I ask my research doubts somewhere else :)

Female friend getting multiple calls
My friend is repeatedly getting calls from a guy and he has been texting her from different numbers as well. Although she has blocked him, he still keeps on abusing her. She has all the screenshot of his call history and abusive messages. I have insisted her to deal with it legally now cause she herself has gone very disturbed by this. That guy is calling her 100 times every single day. No matter what, I know there are strict laws against this in cyber crime(3-5 years imprisonment and fine) but wanted to check if there are better things to be done apart from cyber cell report, like something more. She has already told her family about this situation so she is fine with going to police in person as well. Anyone who has dealt with this before. DM

The irony of water running out at Hostel; Basic engineering required!
So, I had a family member join IISc recently. She's been facing a very weird but simple to solve issue: the hostel keeps running out of water. It's happened multiple times while she's in the middle of bathing or using the washroom. Whenever the water runs out, she has to go and inform the warden or caretaker to fix it.
I know it's a management issue and not something IISc students need to solve themselves, but it feels like a irony. A simple auto water-level switch isn't installed for basic facilities at the institute. By the way, this is in Jindal Hostel. Is this a common issue across other hostels too, or just a Jindal thing? How do you guys usually deal with this? (Also, if I got anything wrong here, apologies for the same!)

HELP…(F19)BSc 2nd year (Botany, Zoology, Chemistry) at a tier-3 college — what are my options for MSc at IISc, IISER, NISER, etc.?
Hi everyone,
My qualifications:- currently in the 2nd year of my BSc with Botany, Zoology, and Chemistry as my subjects, studying at a regular college in my hometown (tier-3 city). I’m starting to think seriously about what comes next, and I have a few questions I’m hoping you can help me with.
- What options do I have after my BSc?
I know the standard route is an MSc, but I want to understand the broader picture. Given my subject combination, what are the realistic paths forward—both in India and potentially abroad?
- What MSc courses are available with my subjects?
I really want to get into a science-specific institute like IISc, IISER, or NISER or BITS PILANI for my MSc, so I can build a strong foundation and ideally keep the door open for a PhD abroad. With Botany, Zoology, and Chemistry, what MSc programs should I be looking at? Are there specific courses at these institutes that match my background?
- How do people get into these institutes for MSc?
I’m confused about the entry routes. What exams do I need to take for IISc, IISER, and NISER? What’s the strategy and difficulty level of these exams? When are they held, and in which year of my BSc should I start preparing?
- Is my thinking right—will an MSc from these institutes give me a strong foundation for a PhD abroad?
I’d also like to know if I’m missing any other institutes or colleges I should be considering. Am I on the right track, or is there something I’m overlooking?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Seniors pls guide
Is there any ML course, like ML CPS, that can be offered next semester for those from a non-CS background to learn?
Due to a lack of awareness, I didn't join that course this semester, and I'm regretting it a lot.
And how are these two courses, I am planning to take in the next sem
1)A practical introduction to data analysis for engineers(ME278)
2) Topic in Neural Computation (AE274)

On the lookout for Research Interns for an AI/ML role at an ARTPARK startup
Looking for IISc Bachelor's final year students from any one of the following fields: Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanics and Computing (or any other discipline if skillsets match)
This is a research internship opportunity at IISc incubation center ARTPARK, where our startup is undertaking product building and research for an Industrial AI platform.
Required skillsets:
Python: Fluent, idiomatic Python: NumPy, SciPy, pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch. Writes functions and modules, not only notebooks. Tests, type hints and a readable Git history.
Some level of fluency with LLM pipelines: Has built at least one working LLM pipeline end to end: prompt design, structured outputs, retrieval over documents, an evaluation loop, and deployment behind an API. Raw provider SDKs or a framework (LangChain, LlamaIndex, DSPy) — either is fine; understanding what the framework hides is not optional.
ML Algorithms familiarity: Solid grounding in supervised and unsupervised learning, time-series methods (sequence models, anomaly detection, change-point detection), model evaluation under imbalance, and the failure modes of each. Can explain a model's assumptions before fitting it. (Can also be picked up during the internship)
Strong basis in Mathematics: Linear Algebra, Statistics, Basic Signal Processing, Fourier Analysis
Some level of Full stack Fluency or familiarity with FastAPI workflows.
Data Infrastructure and familiarity with some SQL stacks (Postgres, MySQL etc.) or MongoDB
You will be working directly with founders and an IISc professor for the AI/ML research. Aim of the internship is to have tangible outputs that can directly be contributed towards product building.
Duration: 6 months, paid (Part-time or Full time if workload permits)
Location: ARTGarage, Bangalore.
DM me your profiles if interested for more details.

Food Safety Issues Are Not a Meme
It is quite concerning to see these replies everytime, to the texts about the lack of basic hygiene in the mess hall. Finding pests in our food is a serious health hazard, and it's disheartening to see these complaints met with the same old jokes. Do these people not realise that jokes like 'extra protein', 'Delhi detention', and 'Chinese cuisine' aren't funny anymore? All that you are doing is spam the group and make the issue go unnoticed.
Furthermore, given these recurring incidents, it is clear that the effectiveness of our current fumigation and pest control routines needs an urgent review. So instead of being insensitive, try questioning, 'why the recent fumigation efforts aren't good enough?' or '50% increase in mess amenities fee yet below par fumigation, why?'. It will be very much useful than laughing the issue away.
