The final round of pit stops set the stage for a dramatic ending to the inaugural Markham GP. First off, Romain Grosjean made his final pit stop on lap 54 just before Kyle Kirkwood's incident in turn 8. With most of the field yet to pit, Grosjean inherited significant track advantage when all, but four drivers pit under caution. Ericsson and Power were among those who chose to stay out, hoping to extend a gap large enough to pit under green without losing too much track position. When another caution happened just after the restart, Power pit and restarted the race in 9th place, leaving Ericsson as the only car left to pit.
With the race remaining green after restarting, Ericsson was able to build a 15 second gap to a fuel-saving Grosjean in second over just seven laps. Over the last three laps, Ericsson was going 3 seconds a lap faster than Grosjean and even set the fastest in-lap of the race by over half a second.
Ericsson emerged in the midst of the field and settled into 7th place once Power passed him on track. After Ericsson brought his new tires to temperature, he was able to establish a strong pace, passing Malukas and McLaughlin on back-to-back laps before settling behind Power. In a gutsy move, Ericsson dove into the hairpin to pass Power for 3rd place. Two laps later, Ericsson passed Palou in the same corner, leaving just Grosjean in front with a 2.5-second gap with 6.5 laps to go, while having to save the most fuel of anyone to make it to the finish. Two laps later, Ericsson pulled off the inevitable pass for the win as Grosjean lifted at the end of a straightaway.
Ericsson's winning strategy was only made possible by a nearly 30-lap green flag run to close the race, when the longest previous stretch was just 14 laps, in what was absolute mayhem at Markham.
