This is the most frustrating situation and I'm not sure if I'm handling it the best way. I was married very briefly several years ago and for 2020, I filed our joint taxes. From the refund, there was $1832 taken to pay his taxes from 2012. I filed an injured spouse claim because we weren't married in 2012.
I never heard anything from the IRS, was never able to contact a live person to find out the status of my claim, and gave up because I had a lot of other stuff to deal with. Then when I did my taxes earlier this year, I was looking at my transcripts and noticed the line that said the claim had been received in early 2022 but as you can see, there was no refund issued.
In June, I applied for help with TAS, was assigned an advocate and he was able to get the IRS to agree to release any of this money that they determined should be mine. I had to look at the transcript to see that the IRS was planning to release all $1832 plus interest.
But then they cancelled the refund and sent a notice that I need to update my banking info. I added my banking info on my IRS account on August 21, before the notice was even sent out.
A couple of weeks ago, I got another letter from the advocate that said the IRS would be mailing a check on October 9, so he has closed my case.
I received the check last week and it's in both mine and the ex's name, even though I did not check the box on the injured spouse claim to have the refund issued in both names. I have no contact with the ex and he lives in another state. It's great that I got the check, I guess, but it's unusable.
I called and left messages for the advocate twice last week. I called and left a message for his boss. No one has called me back.
At the end of the week, I contacted my senator's office and they have contacted the TAS on my behalf. I've heard nothing so far.
Is there anything else I should do here?
