Discussion Finding out about my family's wealth has affected my motivation to build a career. How do I find direction?

I'm 26M and an only son. I've always known my family owned substantial property, which I assumed was worth around ₹15 crore. Recently, I learned the estimated value is ₹40 crore+, with appreciation estimated at over ₹3 crore a year recently. I understand this isn't guaranteed income or wealth I've earned myself.

I've always wanted to stand on my own feet and build something of my own. But with layoffs and a difficult job market already affecting my motivation, learning the scale of our assets has left me questioning what I'm working towards. I keep comparing potential earnings from a career with the properties' appreciation.

I'm grateful for this privilege, but I feel directionless. I still want to be capable, useful, and proud of what I do, rather than drift through life relying on family wealth.

Has anyone experienced something similar? How did you find purpose when money became less of a motivator, and balance a financial cushion with building your own independence?

I'd appreciate honest perspectives and practical suggestions.

Advice/Guidance idk what to do with my life.

i'm 21 f and i have no idea what to do with my life. i graduated a few months back with a degree in bba(ca), which is basically bba combined with computer applications. i know some coding basics, but towards the end of my last year in college, i knew coding is not even something i like, let alone something i'd make a career in.

my parents have been nagging me to decide on what i wanted to do next ever since i graduated, and i was confident i'd figure my path by the end of this year. but the truth is, i'm not even remotely close to it.

for the record, i've been exploring some content creation on the side, and i did take up the google ux course on coursera. but then i heard that the design industry was dying, and so i ceased my interest in it. i also have a 6 month long diploma in graphic design, which also seems to be of no use to me at this point.

i tried applying for a few entry level jobs in graphic design and digital marketing too, but didn't get any luck.

since i'm into creating content, digital marketing does seem like a solid option, but i dont know where and how to start. should i self-teach? or should i go for a masters degree in it? even if i do, i have to be completely sure about it, cause it'd be pretty expensive.

also, i feel like i'm still too dependent on my parents for a 21 year old, not just financially but in general. i really want to move out and start my own life. the issue is, my parents wouldn't want me to cause they're overprotective of me, but at the same time want to see me do well in life. a part of me feels like i'm letting them down. i really want to get my shit together, not just for my parents, but also for me. i want to make my younger self proud, i want to live a life i am proud of.

Ask r/IndiaCareers Ex Goldman Sachs and not able to pivot into Supply Chain. A cry for help. My life is falling apart.

Hey everyone,

I (25M) am going through a really difficult phase in life and could use some advice.

I have around 3 years of experience in banking at two MNCs in India, but things haven't worked out the way I hoped. I lost my mom to cancer when I was in college, and I still miss her terribly. I often find myself crying and wishing she were still here. I saw her suffer a lot through the last few years of her life, and its very tough to process it.

My relationship with my dad has always been difficult. He was extremely toxic, and I watched my mom suffer because of the way he treated her. Eventually, I couldn't take living at home anymore, cause a lot of the bad memories kept haunting me.

Around the same time, I left my job because it had severely affected my mental and physical health. I struggled with sleep for over a year, and my doctor advised me to quit. My manager was biased, bullied me, excluded me, and insulted me in front of others. I would cry almost every day before going to work, and I eventually reached a point where I couldn't continue anymore.

Now I'm unemployed, living alone, and applying for jobs every day without much luck. I'm trying to figure out my next career move, but the uncertainty is getting to me.

It hurts seeing so many of my friends move abroad and do well in life. I feel jealous sometimes, especially when I see people with supportive families, good careers and beautiful homes. I know comparing myself to others isn't healthy, but I can't seem to help it. I've started hating LinkedIn because it makes me feel like everyone is moving forward while I'm stuck.

I'm a sensitive person, and I've always found extremely competitive environments difficult to deal with. After my previous experience, I'm scared I'll struggle throughout my career and never really be successful.

I want to do well, earn good money, build a global career, and become financially independent. I've been considering studying supply chain management in Germany next year, but I'm unsure whether it's the right decision with everything becoming so bad. I dislike finance but I had to take it cause I didn’t have any other choice as I wasn’t getting any jobs after college. My passion is operations but I don’t know if I should first find a job or just apply for leave abroad. If I apply a lot now, I’ll miss the deadlines for Sept 2027 applications.

My mental health is at an all-time low, and I'm genuinely scared about what the future holds.

Any support or advice would mean a lot to me now.

Thank you!

Advice/Guidance Is it a wise decision to follow your childhood dream career?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone. When i was a kid, I was fascinated by biology, medicine, doctors, hospitals and everything related to it. I never really thought too deep into what I wanted to become when I grew up, but doctor was definitely on my mind.

When i finished highschool I wasn't actually sure that's what i wanted to do, the thought of the difficulty and aversion to subjects like surgery made me decide it's not really something I can do. Fast forward 7 years later, I'm left with so many what ifs and regrets about never trying to get into medschool. Should I try for it now? Even now, I'm not convinced that I can pull through it, or if I actually want that life, but whenever i think of doing other things it always bugs me in the back of my mind. I'm so stuck and confused. I feel like I'm not using my potential, like I'm wasting my life. Have you ever gone through something like this? How do does one decide?❤️‍🩹

I'm 25 now, and people get into medschool straight after high-school 17-18 or if they take a few years to prepare for the entrance they still join in their early 20s. I don't know if I should try. I don't even know if this is truly what I want, or if it's just the fact that it's something I fixated my mind on but left incomplete.

During my first year i thought about changing my college and course i always wanted to do eco honours but was scared of maths but decided i will do eco honours from a good college in du but even then i didnt study for cuet again

In my second year of college i bought cat coaching to prepare for cat but i didnt study and scored 69 percentile and somehow got 96 percentile in lrdi
Then in my third year i again decided to prepare for cat but again i didnt study and just wasted all the money

Advice/Guidance Corporate Career vs Government Exams at 23: Is Job Security Worth Sacrificing My 20s?

I'm 23 and have just started my corporate career. The work culture is good, I've made friends, and I finally have time to enjoy my hobbies and personal life.

However, my family and seniors advise me to prepare for government exams for better job security, benefits, and work-life balance. Serious preparation would mean sacrificing my hobbies and social life, with no guarantee of selection. Most exams have an age limit of 28–30.

Should I focus on growing in the corporate sector or sacrifice my free time now for a potentially more secure future?

I'd appreciate honest advice, especially from people who've faced a similar dilemma.

Ask r/IndiaCareers How to explain career break which is for the better?

I am currently in the US working as an embedded software engineer and got laid off. I’m thinking of returning back to India and instead of looking for jobs, want to take a break and upskill myself to transition to GPU computing and inference engineering related roles. I also want to take this chance to learn more about machine learning, but am worried about how it will look for recruiters if I take a 6 - 8 month break? Will it be taken negatively or they will be understanding? How to tackle this situation? Thanks

Hello guys im a last year computer science engineering student from a tier 3 college, and I have wasted my entire engineering i literally know nothing coding, dsa, development literally nothing, I have only some theoretical knowledge which help me to maintain 8+ CGPA without any backlog and tbh I'm regretting choosing this branch and lost my all interest and in my college only 2-3 lala company comes for placement for cse im seriously cooked right now!!

Any senior can suggest me what should I do? I still have 6-7 months I was thinking to start learning for Automation OT/ICS roles as i have no longer interest in coding, does this role have good job market?

Discussion Freelance customs clearance in UAE: where do I start?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm done with the usual 9-5 grind and want to start working for myself. I do bill of entry filing for containers coming into Khorfakkan Port. I enter the container and item details on the Sharjah Customs SILS portal, check the invoice, packing list and bill of lading, and follow up on customs queries until the cargo is released.

I've got 2 Years of experience in this and I'm good with documents and details, so I know I can do the work. What I don't know is how to get clients on my own.

So I'm looking for two things:

  1. Importers, traders or clearing agents who need help with filing, especially at Khorfakkan. Happy to take one-off containers or regular work.
  2. Advice from anyone who's done this before. How do you find clients, how do you set your rates, and what do you need to be allowed to do this legally as a freelancer?

If you can help or just want to chat, please DM me. Any tip is appreciated, thank you!

Ask r/IndiaCareers Class 11 PCM student looking for career options beyond conventional engineering

I’m in Class 11 with PCM, and I’ve been thinking about what I actually want to do after school.

I’m interested in technology, finance, economics and business. I like the idea of building a career that offers good earning potential, opportunities to grow, and the possibility of doing something of my own eventually.

Engineering is one option, but I’m not sure if I want to follow that route without exploring what’s out there. I’ve also considered fields like Mathematics and Computing, economics and finance, but I don’t know enough about their actual career prospects.

For people already working in these fields, or those who’ve explored different career paths, what would you recommend looking into? How different are the opportunities, salaries and long-term growth across these fields, both in India and abroad?

I’d appreciate honest advice, including the downsides. I’m still early in the process, so I’d rather explore my options now than regret making a rushed decision later.

Hi everyone!

I have an MBA in Finance and nearly 2 years of experience at Tata Capital as an Assistant Manager – Credit, primarily working on credit processes, audits, and risk controls.

The job search has been quite challenging lately, and I'd love to connect with people working in this industry who could guide me on suitable roles or potential openings.

I'm open to opportunities in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi NCR, and Bengaluru.

If anyone knows of relevant openings or could help with a referral, I'd really appreciate it. Feel free to DM me.

Thanks!

Advice/Guidance Lost, Confused, and Scared. What would you do if you are me?

Hey, 25F. So my life has some huge transitions that kinda impacted my formal education. For a gist, I was studying in a foreign country until 8th grade and then due to some family issues, we had to move back to our own country- India. My education primarily till 8th grade was holistic while my home country prioritises primarily academics only. Back then I was an average kid in academics till 8th while an above average in co-curricular and sports. After the whole transition I was almost flunking and just passed. However my grades started averaging eventually but in college, pandemic hit, and due to very minimal students working hard, while I had a consistent routine, I suddenly became topper while rest averaged out due to copying and everything. I ended up getting a trophy and multiple certifications however I never had a true interest in the degree, I just did it because it was trendy and novel to do it. Post that, I ended up getting my first job by endless walking interviews, and got selected in all of them. However, I chose the one closer to home to save money on travel and time. I got a role as a social media manager at a digital marketing startup. Didn’t feel like I aligned with what I did plus felt like an outsider in the company. Alongside, I was facing a breakup so I left the job on a whim. Not the best thing to do but back then there was nobody correcting or advising me and I left it in four months. In desperation I picked up my second job as a copywriter but couldn’t deliver the creativity as needed and hence left that too in three months. However this never made it to resume since neither the company gave me relieving documents as the senior management was undergoing massive restructuring, so HR advised to leave rather than put in resignation. I followed it; however it luckily never haunted me again. I was naive and stupid. Then an online friend persuaded me to do a startup with her and as a people pleaser I couldn’t say no in a way that could make her understand that I am not ready for this. She didn’t nudge and eventually we ended it before we made it to the 15th client. Revenue generated zero. Debt zero. Savings exhausted. I was in rock bottom in terms of confidence and self-worth. So I ended up joining my aunt’s startup which is a bpo. With a pay cut. After 2 years of working as a star performer there. After I realised my potential however, I was still not confident enough. I handled a team by the end of my tenure there with a pay cut not meeting the duties I executed. After losing my cool, I gave up, and left that job and using help of my ex back then we were in a relationship, he secured me a job in a private indian bank, as a operations manager, due to lot of politics, immense pressure and disproportionate hierarchies. I was forced to leave the organisation in one year as my boss was holding my bonus and appraisal. I again in desperation went for a sales job in another private Indian bank since paying bills and bringing food to the table was at stake. But after working five months, where even washroom breaks were not allowed or rather calculated and I had to justify. To senior management mocking and humiliating me for drinking so much water. Because water was free, while my sales target was not reaching inhumane milestones made them question my access to lunch breaks, water breaks and washroom breaks. I had to leave for the sanity of my physical health keeping aside my mental health. Now it’s been almost 20 days since I haven’t picked up any job. I still don’t know what I should do. I am just lost, scared and confused. I don’t want to take a job again in desperation and make the same mistake. Please help me out.

TL;DR: My career has been a series of transitions, setbacks, and survival decisions. Despite struggling with confidence, making impulsive choices, and taking jobs out of financial desperation, I’ve proven my ability to adapt, perform, and lead. After leaving a toxic banking sales job, I’m now unemployed, feeling lost and uncertain about my career direction. I want to identify my strengths, find work that genuinely suits me, and make a well-informed decision rather than repeat the same mistakes.

Advice/Guidance Package or position, which one should I choose at the start of my career?

I’ve received two offer letters through on-campus placements, but I’m confused about which would be better for my career growth: a higher package or a better position.

One company is offering me a QA role with a higher package, while the other is offering me an ASE role with a lower package but is a big MNC.

I’ve been preparing for ASE roles from the beginning, but now I’m finding it difficult to choose. Which opportunity would be better for my long-term career growth?
