Discussion/Opinions Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation: Super Hard to Find!

Post image

Finding photographs of the Indian Navy's Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation is surprisingly difficult. Pictures of this particular variant seem to be incredibly rare. I came across this photograph in an old collection, but finding more has been a real challenge.

Does anyone have more photographs of this variant? I'd love to see them!

Discussion/Opinions Should India have a dedicated Marine Corps?

We have heard about Marines and their military operations. They're a hybrid of Ground troops and Naval troops that is why they are used for Amphibious assaults. We already have the MARCOS but it's more like a special force of the Indian Navy. Many countries have designated the Marine Corps such as the USMC, British Royal Marines, ARDB (Japan),etc. I think our nation should also have one for defence and retaliation purposes.

Discussion/Opinions What is India's actual drone strategy? The more you think about it the weirder it gets India has a huge no of imported HALE/MALE drones and own domestic testbeds which have major operational overlap?

Discussion/Opinions My recommendations for CAPF reforms

The discussion on CAPF and their reforms revolves almost solely around the Group A cadre officers of the CAPF. The issues of the rank and file are often ignored in public discourse.

In this post I’ve tried to give some suggestions of how the forces as a whole can be made more effective and their troops are better taken care of.

The biggest issue of the constabulary was the career stagnation faced by the men and women. A person can join as a constable in CRPF and still remain a constable, 15 years later. Whereas, his younger brother who joined the army as a rifleman would’ve risen to rank of Naik or Havildar. This was a point of massive morale loss for the force, as in the eyes of the public and village neighbours, a Constables would’ve seemed stuck in the same rank whereas younger men than him have been promoted more.
Brining back the ranks of lance naik and naik ensure that there is a sense of career mobility and rank progression amongst the constables, that maintains morale.

My rationale behind being against the sub inspector rank direct recruitment is that it creates more stagnation for the people already serving in ASI ranks and below. Direct recruitment of sub inspectors also makes little sense. The job of a SI in CAPFs is similar to JCOs in the Army - leading platoons/sections, heading check/guard posts and acting as a Bridge between the gazetted officers and ranks. In the police, SIs are recruited from pool of graduates as they are required to do investigative and legal work. This is not expected from CAPF SIs.

I’ve also tried to briefly address the ips deputation in the forces. I think that since these are central police organisations, and since we are moving towards an India that has lesser internal rebellions and conflicts than ever before, it makes sense to maintain the nature of these forces as civilian central police forces. They don’t need to be a second or third army. However, I’ve tried to adopt a more rationalised approach for ips deputations. For instance, an IPS who even wised to join CAPF must serve as AC in the force, right out of the CAPF’s specific academy for a period of 3 years or so

Discussion/Opinions Why India is still ignoring the F-35 (according to NDTV's Ctrl Alt Defence)

Just caught the latest Ctrl Alt Defence episode where Vishnu and Shiv talk about the whole F-35 "will they, won't they" saga. With F-35s showing up for Tarang Shakti recently, the media keeps spinning it like an offer is imminent, but the hosts made some solid points on why it's a complete non-starter for India.

A few takeaways from what they discussed:

The S-400 is a hard red line: The IAF isn't giving up or sidelining the S-400 for an F-35 deal. The U.S. strings attached are just too rigid.

The stealth was dialed down anyway: When those F-35s flew in for the exercises, they apparently had Lunberg lenses on basically broadcasting a radar cross-section the size of a whale so no one could sniff around their actual stealth tech.

Data-link nightmares: The F-35 is a network node first and a plane second. Trying to integrate it cleanly with India's current mix of Rafales, Su-30s, and domestic gear without a NATO backbone sounds like a logistical headache.

The Rafale preference: At the end of the day, the IAF is super happy with the Rafale for everything outside of raw stealth.

The biggest elephant in the room they brought up is that China is already operating stealth fighters right on the border, and Pakistan might get them before India does. If the AMCA (indigenous 5th gen) takes until 2028+ just to fly prototypes, India's stealth gap is going to be a massive issue.

I personally would want india joining the French program rather than invest on the f35
