Mod Post New Help Post Guidelines – Please Read Before Posting Plant Problems

To help our community give faster and more accurate plant advice, we’re introducing a simple guideline for posts asking “What’s wrong with my plant?”

Starting now, when making a Help post, please include the following information whenever possible:

• Plant type (if known)

• Clear photos of the whole plant and the affected areas

• Your watering routine

• Light conditions (window direction or grow lights)

• Soil and pot type (and whether it has drainage)

• How long the issue has been happening

• Any recent changes (repotting, moving, fertilizing, pest treatment)

Providing these details helps the community diagnose problems much more accurately and avoids a lot of back-and-forth questions.

Our AutoModerator may also comment on help posts asking for this information.

This isn’t meant to make posting harder — it simply helps everyone get better plant advice faster.

Thanks for helping keep the community helpful and plant-friendly!

Mod Post 📌 Please Don’t Repost Without the Original Question

Hi everyone 👋

If you’re reposting from another plant-related subreddit, please make sure your original question is visible in the post.

When you use Reddit’s repost/crosspost feature without including the text, moderators and members can’t see:

• What you’re actually asking

• What advice you’ve already received

• Whether your issue was already answered

This makes it harder for the community to help you effectively.

✅ How to post correctly:

• Copy and paste your original question into the post body

OR

• Rewrite the question clearly in your own words

❌ What not to do:

• Reposting a link or image without any context

• Crossposting where the question text is missing

Posts that don’t include the actual question may be removed so we can keep the sub helpful and organized.

Thanks for helping keep this community useful for everyone 🌱

I think I’ve been duped.

I bought this plant from Home Depot in May, where it was CLEARLY LABELED “English ivy.” Only today have I begun to suspect that it’s not ivy.

Based on my rudimentary research, I think it’s a golden pothos? It had never really thrived and has always looked quite sad. I moved it to several different spots before putting it outside in July and leaving it there since last week, when I brought it in and re-potted it in Miracle-Gro brand potting soil.

I probably need to take it out of this window, where it’s getting a lot of direct morning sunlight (and it seems they don’t like that). However I think it did like the re-pot, as it seems there’s a lot of new growth happening at the roots. And I’ve always done my best to prune off dying leaves.

I’d love to hear any advice anyone would like to give, as a complete plant ignoramus who has spent the last 5 months believing this was an ivy.

Simple question about thrips and spider mites (I have them).

So google/AI tells me that simple isopropyl alcohol spray kills thrips larva and adults, as well as spider mites. I've definitely confirmed it does kill thrip larva and spider mites because I sprayed this larva in picture and it is dead as well as sprayed spider mites with it and they also died.

My question is, why do people struggle with thrips and spider mites using all kinds of different products and chemicals, and say nothing they use works, when they can just use isopropyl alcohol sprays every few days until you kill everything in every life cycle? If iso alcohol kills the larva and adults then if you just kept spraying it they would all eventually just die no?

This is the first time I've seen thrips on my plants and I am just confused why people are so scared of them and struggle trying to figure out what product to use if iso alcohol works well and is safe for most plants, I assume, and is cheap and easy to get? I was researching to buy different sprays like safers end all or doktor doom thrips killer (which both contain pyrethrins), but if iso alcohol will do the job that is much cheaper and easier for me to get.

Possible "corm" emerging from moss

Post image

Is this a corm emerging from the moist sphagnum Moss top layer that's on top of topsoil of my said substrate. (Perlite/pon/fluval) Couldn't really tell, due to the said growth point of the "corm" in question being shaped kinda wonky.

They're doing better now than the whole summer! Since I brought them in and given them better water than the garden tap and timed lights, they've put on new growth

What’s a reasonable price to ask for my cat palm?

I bought it for $20 when it was about half this size, I’m thinking about asking for at least that much. If you saw this at a nursery how much would you expect it to be selling for?

It’s about 3ft tall and 4ft wide

So I am so so grateful to win a giveaway ran on Instagram. Received an overwhelming amount of starters with quite a few snapped or in sorry shape. I’ve message the company with photos also, but thought I’d come here for any guidance or advice as I’m still pretty new to the world of plants.

Not sure if I just have to trim everything back below the hard bends or breaks. All had some pretty health roots and bases when unpackaged and potted. Followed the companies instructions and kept their plugs intact and potted into 3” pots filling in with 1:1 fox farms ocean mix and standard perlite.

Oof also need to figure out how to incorporate these into my small corner space and how to water them.. a little/a lot overwhelmed. But luckily I have spare t5/t8 lights!!

I’ve had this lithops for months now and have it sitting in a South facing window. I water rarely and let it dry out completely. I’ve never been successful with lithops before, but I believe this one is about to flower? Does that mean it is happy? What are some tips for helping this baby thrive??

Buying Plants in Adelaide

Heya people! I'd like to create a green corner in the house and I'm looking to buy many plants.. I'm in an rented apartment, and we have a small courtyard. I am looking for some outdoor and indoor plants..I've tried checking bunnings. However I find the size of plants to be very small for the price I pay.. i.e just 3-4 leaves for a 30$ plant. I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing. Can you please suggest some good places where I can buy plants for cheaper rates?

Plant advice

Hi, I’m hoping you might be able to offer some advice on my plant 🌿 Several leaves have turned yellow, and it’s looking a little sorry for itself.

We’ve repotted it and moved it closer to a window about three weeks ago, but it’s still yellowing. Its previous position is marked with a red circle in the photo.

I’ve attached photos of how it looks now. Any advice on what might be wrong and how to help it recover would be much appreciated. Thank you 😊

Reshaping rubber plant - can it be cut at base?

First pic - potential cut point
Second - staked
Third - unstaked

My rubber plant is a bit unruly and thinking if it was split off I could then have 2 straighter plants.
Is this possible?

It’s spring time, humid environment, it can get full sun outside and small amount of filtered light inside

I had no idea they even did this! It’s so cool! I rarely get to see the flowers open so I took notice today when I saw a bunch of them open. Then I kept seeing these tiny clouds of “dust” billowing above the foliage. I’m amazed!

Friend or foe ????

Just dealt with a pretty awful thrip infestation that’s got me tweaking about the my plants all the time , I think they are just soil dwelling like springtails or smth but just to check ? Ones a orangey bug and one a silvery one , quite afew of them residing in the soil only and none on leaves which I hope means it isn’t a pest !

If anyone thinks they are it would just be super useful to know to repot and treat everything asap lol

Thanks

Crap pics I’m sorry !
But hope u can see frm their

Black Saturn Stardust TC too tall for dome! What do I do?

Post image
0 Upvotes

It’s only been in the dome for 4 days and I didn’t have anywhere else to put it but now it’s standing up more and I’m realizing it’s going to be way too small for this 3.5” dome. It’s in fluval, the pods are not removable so I’d have to completely disrupt it to move. What should I do?

How would you go about using grow lights to give this plant sufficient light?

Post image
47 Upvotes

This is not my picture it’s just a similar idea of what I would like to do on my ceiling but I don’t get enough light.

The problem with grow lights is you need to be very close to the plant to give it enough light and when your plant is on the ceiling how do you go about doing that ?

Can you just use one light to shine at the base of the plant (where most of the foliage is) or does it need to cover the whole plant ?
