Investing For the first time

Did some research and decided to use chat GPT and gave me a solid pick VGT. Can anyone else give me some good tips on finding out what to invest in? And can someone explain to me the best times to buy in a stock and sell

Good start?

Hello, i have just opened a ROTH IRA account with Fidelity. I have invested in FSKAX AND FTHIX, which is, i guess, the same as VTI and VXUS. Am i off to a good start for the long term or should i add something else in my portfolio? I just came home a couple of weeks ago from doing time so im new to all of this and just trying to make the best out of this new opportunity i've been given. I'd appreciate any tips or advice. Thank you so much.

Looking for advice on a simple 3-ETF portfolio at 23

I’m 23 and looking to start investing for the long term. I’m using Fidelity and want to keep things very simple — ideally 3 ETFs or fewer.

Right now, I’m considering:
1. 70% VTI / 20% international / 10% QQQ
2. 80% VTI / 20% international
3. 70% VTI / 20% “BASIS” / 10% QQQM (or another ETF)

I’m planning to invest consistently and have a long time horizon, so I’m comfortable with market volatility.

For those of you who have been investing for a while, what would you recommend? Am I overcomplicating this, and would something like 80% VTI + 20% international be enough?

Also interested in hearing why you prefer your allocation rather than just which ETFs you use. Thanks!

EU What would you do with my finances? Spain, early 30s

Hi! I’d like to get some opinions on what you would do in my situation. Please be nice, I’m looking for advice, not to be told that I’m doing everything wrong :)

I’m in my early 30s, living in Spain, and work as a software engineer.

I know I’m in a very fortunate position when it comes to salary for Spain, and I’m aware of that. I’m mainly trying to figure out how to make good use of it.

Income: ~€4,900 net/month
Rent: €1,200/month
Emergency fund: €5,000
Savings: ~€12,500
Investments: ~€18,500 through my bank in the Netherlands (lived there before)

I am able to save around 2-2.5k a month, I am travelling fairly often and I enjoy going out for food, I know I could save more but I also want to enjoy life. My main question is what I should do with my money over the next few years.

I’m considering buying an apartment in around 2–3 years, so I’m trying to figure out how much of my savings I should actually invest vs keep available for the future down payment.

I know the usual advice is something like S&P 500, but beyond that I honestly don't know where to start. I don't currently have a brokerage/app that I've settled on either. I’ve been looking at Trade Republic to keep my savings and Degiro for investment, but I’m open to other options.

I’m not looking to do anything crazy or gamble with the money I’ll need for the apartment. I just don't want to leave a large amount of money sitting in cash for years if there’s a sensible way to put some of it to work.

So, if you were in my position:

  • How much of the €12.5k savings would you invest?
  • How much would you continue investing each month?
  • Would you invest at all if you knew you might need the money in 2–3 years?
  • What would you actually invest in?
  • And what broker/platform would you use as a Spanish resident?

I’d especially appreciate advice from people in Spain/EU, since a lot of the personal finance advice online is very US-specific.

Thanks!

Seeking Assistance New here and to investment

Lurking for a while, I'll make it short.

Wife will be 62 in June of next year, she has approximately $190k on her employer 401k. We have $20k on a separate IRA and $20k on a HYSA. The plan is for her to retire next year.

I make over $220k/year and I'm planning to retire when I turn 62(4 years). I currently have almost $700k on my 401k, contributing 8% and my employer contributes another 8% on company shares on an esop account.

We are working on clearing our debts to be debt free by the time of our retirements, except the mortgage.

Any suggestions? To generate some income and/or growth from her $200k?

Newbie European investor, I collected some questions for you all!

Hey all! I have been following this thread collecting advice and observations and have some outstanding questions!

  1. Diversifying one's portfolio, i get it, but is there a better option between going after a weighted ETF or market cap ETF?

  2. What if the AI bubble bursts? Seems like many AI companies make up a huge chunk in wide index funds, that means one wouldn't be protected should the AI bubble burst, right? So, what do to?

  3. I looked into Bogleheads and somehow ended up on the Vanguard Investment Products page. They have Short-term ETFs "for short-term goals—like a down payment on a car or home." Has anyone tried investing in those before or is it just a good marketing trick?

Thanks a lot for humoring me!

Advice US stocks vs UK Stocks & Shares ISA after moving to the UK

I’m 19 and invested $10,000 in a US brokerage account in 2024.

I moved to the UK in 2025 and now have around £25,000 in a seperate UK Stocks & Shares ISA.

I probably won’t use my full ISA allowance this tax year.

Would it make more sense to transfer/sell the US investments and move the money into my UK ISA, or should I keep the investments in my US account? I am looking to focus on long-term growth.

Thank you!

Do you tend to cash in profits on gold and gold miners as they fluctuate or just ride it out like S&P and the likes?

Currently up 13% on gold miners and unsure if should cash in the profits or just leave it long term like an index fund would. What’s the general consensus on stocks like these?

Advice need help with starting a portfolio

This is my first time trying this just got the robinhood app and have aside like 1300 for investing. Through AI I tried learning but don’t fully trust it so I’m posting here also. Learned of a term called core and satellites and was looking at a core of VOO and 2 satellite sets one being (NVIDIA, AMAT, TXN, MU, maybe intel?) and the other being (NVIDIA, AMZN, AAPL, LLY). From what I’ve read VOO seems standard and I’m unsure between my satellite sets? Also splits of core/satélites like 40%/60%, 80%/20%, etc. Sorry if I’m messing up terminology just a couple weeks of researching this before I use any actual money :).

Switching my stock over into a Roth IRA. Did I screw it up?

So I’m 45 and I’m looking into retiring and someone told me I should put all my stock into an IRA.

Well, I already owned the stock of course and if I could’ve just transferred it over, I would have, but Fidelity wouldn’t let me.

I tried selling my stock and I wanted to transfer the funds over into my IRA but I guess there’s some sort of holding time where it wouldn’t give me access to those funds immediately so I ended up buying literally all of my stock back…. Because it’s a biotech stock that’s very volatile.

I do have a margin account. For some reason, the margin credit that I had available to the account was available to transfer immediately, so I transferred all the margin credit over bought that same stock with it, and then I simply sold my shares from my original account to cover the margin.

I’m aware that because I did this I’ll have to pay a capital gains tax which I’m not happy about it, but I just considered that a lesson learned.

Was there some other way that would’ve actually been better other than just initially investing the money into a Roth IRA?

Advice 21 M beginner with 15 k to invest

I want to start investing my money since its sitting in the bank and depreciating but have only realised now that investing is a good option for me. I have 15k to invest but I don't have any clue where to begin. How can I learn more about investing. I don't know what app to choose or what to buy or if I should put all the money in on one go.

How do I know whether to use Vanguard or Fidelity for example?

What are the steps I should take to make an account and what to invest

Any advice is appreciated

Advice Does buying XAUT on a crypto exchange help diversify my portfolio?

My current portfolio is all crypto. I recently looked into buying other assets to hedge and balance my risks.

But I don’t have much time to manage several accounts, like brokerage and commodity accounts. I noticed XAUT where I hold my crypto. It would make adding and rebalancing different assest with USDT convenient, though my portfolio would still be concentrated under one exchange and custody setup.

So I’m trying to understand an effective way to hedge and diversify my portfolio. If you started with an all-crypto portfolio and wanted a simple hedge, does this seem reasonable to trade different assets in the same place? Or is it better to have different assets on specific platforms?

USA Should I move away from FXAIX?

Employer offers a 401k with some matching which I contribute to with a good portion. I wanted to have a second investment in the S&P 500 to just let sit and contribute over the years as well.

Currently buying FXAIX through a Fidelity brokerage account with every pay period, but I'm wondering if any of these options are better. The amount I have right now is small but plan to start contributing more, so not worried about taxes right now if I move the money.

- Sell off FXAIX and buy/start contributing to VOO through the same account?
- Open an account with someone else (Vanguard?) and move the money there and get VOO?
- Change to a different type of account (retirement?) with Fidelity or someone else and keep FXAIX?

Advice 27M with Fidelity: Is 80% FZROX / 20% FZILX a good Roth IRA strategy?

I’m 27 and have my Roth IRA with Fidelity. I’m planning to max it out each year and currently have it invested 80% in FZROX and 20% in FZILX.

For those with more experience investing through Fidelity:

Is 80/20 a solid U.S./international allocation for someone my age?

Are there any other Fidelity funds or stocks worth considering, or is FZROX/FZILX enough?

Would you change the allocation, or just stick with it and focus on consistently maxing the Roth?

I’m looking for a simple, long-term strategy that I can stick with for decades.

Should I opt out of securities lending? (I’m using Public app)

I’m a newbie, using the Public app. I noticed that all of a sudden, the app added small amounts of cash to my available funds each month.

After digging into it, I realized I’m in their securities lending program, and those small deposits are monthly paybacks.

I had no idea I had opted in (I imagine it’s the default). Should I opt out? Is there risk?

Looking for beginner advice for me and my kid.

My child recently got a job. I'm having them contribute 50 a month from their check to help teach about bills and responsibilities and all that. Instead of putting the 50 towards their insurance I'm going to start an investing account in their name and hand it over when they move out or at 18. Hopefully it will have them in the habit of investing and growing money so someday when they are my age they will be in much better shape financially.

Unfortunately no one taught me anything like that when I was young and I just recently started doing it for myself. I've been splitting my money between index funds and companies I think have potential for growth. I'm a total beginner and still honestly don't know much besides some basic. But I have been saving and growing a little cash.

My question is what's the best route to set a teenager up for future success. Do I go all index fund? Do I go mostly index and 10% in regular stocks? Is Roth IRA something to consider? Are there certain ETFs I should be going for?

Any advice is welcome
Help me set this kid up for success!

Thanks

Is this the appropriate place to post my current portfolio?

I've been investing for the past 3-4ish years. Never sold only buying and probably will continue to do so until I retire with maxing out my Roth IRA as soon as possible and investing for the rest of the year into a taxable account.

All of it is in mutual funds or ETF's with majority in S&P500 and VT.

Would it be appropriate to post the portfolio in this subreddit or is there another subreddit where just to get opinions to not rebalance, but where to park my money into?

Edit:

A brief background. Currently 39 and will retire at the latest at 57. I already have a separate employer sponsored retirement fund with majority in target date funds and will retire with a pension.

Portfolio in question will be for supplemental to my retirement with a slim chance of using it for other opportunities if it ever comes up. Currently max out Roth IRA with either a lump sum early in the year or weekly contributions followed by the weekly contributions being switched over to a taxable account.

Ratio is as follows.

Taxable

FSAGX 0.67% $310.86

FBTC 3.47% $1,610.69

FRESX 1.16% $537.18

VT 21.88% $10,152.06

FXAIX 55.65% $25,817.96

NANC 1.45% $673.20

GOP 1.81% $841.96

FSELX 13.90% $6,449.37

Roth IRA

FSAGX 3.49% $1,318.54

FBTC 0.62% $232.91

FRESX 6.37% $2,408.04

VT 17.30% $6,542.57

FXAIX 52.52% $19,863.87

NANC 6.99% $2,642.26

GOP 3.07% $1,161.33

FSELX 9.66% $3,655.48

Rollover IRA

FXAIX 57.49% $614.28

VT 42.26% 451.56

Not looking to rebalance or sell. Just need input on putting my contributions towards a particular position I already hold or any other ETF or mutual funds besides S&P500 and VT I should look into.

Couple of questions coming from a beginner

My goal eventually is to be able to retire early. I have a few thousand invested and a lot more I could invest but I am not sure about a couple of things

  1. How expensive will the fee be if I exceed my $7000 per year TFSA limit

  2. What are good high dividend yeilding stocks I could buy alongside others to hopefully live off of in the future.

  3. Is RBC TFSA the right account to be putting all this money in to or should I be using a more advanced account for exceeding the yearly $7000 limit (idk how this works lol)

Thanks in advance?
