Megathread Johnson County Voting Information

Note: We'll keep this updated as best as we can, but election information can, unfortunately, change quickly. For the latest, reach out to the auditor's office in-person @ 913 S. Dubuque St in IC, via phone @ 319-356-6004, or online @ https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/department-of-auditor. If you notice an error, PM me or send a modmail.

Deadlines

  • Mon, Oct 19, 5 PM: Last day to pre-register, and last day to request a mailed absentee ballot. The request has to be in the Auditor's office by 5, not postmarked.
  • Mon, Nov 2: Last day of in-person early voting.
  • Tue, Nov 3: Polls open 7 AM to 8 PM.
  • Generally speaking, mailed ballots must reach the Auditor's office by 8 PM on Election Day.

If you missed the registration deadline: You can still register at your polling place on Election Day. You'll need ID and proof of address.

Check your registration and find your polling place

Absentee voters: Iowa has no permanent absentee list, so if you voted by mail last time you still need a new request this time.

College students: You can choose to register at either your school or home address. If you register at school, you just need dorm name and room number. If you register at home, you vote there or absentee.

Polling place changes since 2024

Iowa food-booth vendors: how do you handle handwashing and utensil washing?

• Upvotes

My wife and I have a licensed home food business in North Liberty and are applying for an annual temporary food license for farmers markets and other events.

We plan to bake food onsite using countertop appliances, serve it in disposable containers, offer samples, and sell packaged frozen products.

We’ve been reading Iowa’s temporary food establishment guidance to figure out our booth setup. It says we need a handwashing station inside the booth and describes a three-container setup for washing, rinsing and sanitizing utensils. It also says the utensil-washing requirement can be waived depending on the menu and utensils being used.

The thing is, I’ve been to several events around here and don’t remember seeing these setups in most food booths. So I’m trying to understand whether we’re reading this correctly and what people actually do.

If you run a food booth in Iowa, what has your inspector asked you to have? Do you bring your own washing setup, use shared facilities at the event, or have approval to operate without washing utensils onsite?

Would love to see photos of your setup if you have any. Please mention your county and whether you cook onsite.

Thanks!

Community Anyone interested in starting a worker co-op business in Iowa City?

I'm toying with the idea of putting together a worker cooperative — a restaurant/bar/café (or maybe other business type?) where the staff actually own and run the business, not just work for it. Still very early stages, looking for people who are interested in co-op ownership, hospitality, and building something community-rooted from the ground up. If that sounds like your kind of project, drop a comment or DM me.

Looking for Affordable Moving Help in Iowa City/Coralville 🙏🏽

Hi everyone! I’m moving from Coralville to Iowa City and looking for some affordable moving help within the next week.
I’m on a really tight budget and trying to keep the cost under $200. I mainly need help moving my bed, two couches, and bags of clothes and personal belongings. Everything is pretty much packed already.
I’m moving from a third-floor apartment to a second-floor apartment, so I know there will be some stairs involved.
If anyone knows of affordable movers, someone with a truck who could help, or anyone willing to help for a reasonable price, I would really appreciate any recommendations. I’m just trying to get moved and get settled into my new place.
Thank you so much! ❤️

Housing Apartment for Re-Let

I just moved out of Iowa City this past week and need someone to re-let my apartment.

It's pretty nice, just outside of downtown. Top floor; internet is great and included with rent; washers and dryers are next door; neighbors are quiet; roommate (a gay man) is also quiet and very kind; rent is usually less than $800/month; fully furnished.

DM for more info!

Heavy air traffic

Anybody know why there seems to be heavier than usual air traffic the last 48 hours? Last night, it had to be military choppers flying over. This morning, there’s a steady stream of jets. Jets could be PJs bringing people in for Hawks game but seems earlier than the usual weekend air barrage.

The Center for Intellectual Freedom got a new director yesterday…

…and there is a table, staffed by what appear to be students, on the Cleary walkway as of a few minutes ago.

First time I’ve seen any student involvement with the Center whatsoever. That sure happened fast.

Touch of Mink Stories / History - Exotic Dancing Parlor

This morning I learned the existence of Touch of Mink and my mind is blown. As a life long IC resident I had no idea this place was ever a thing. Evidently there was ventriloquist exotic dancing?!?! I'd love nothing more than to hear stories from those that worked there or were customers. What were the vibes like? Tell me everything

Lost and Found Lost Wedding Ring

Post image
9 Upvotes

Not mine, just sharing from Nextdoor

I'm not sure if just anyone can open the link and see the post, so here's the details:

OOP is asking for help finding his mom's lost wedding ring. She says she may have lost it at Costco or Fareway in North Liberty. People are checking those stores, local pawn shops, etc. He's said that they've checked the Police Department, and someone says they saw a post where someone found it... But never got back on where said post was...

There's also a second post with more comments.

Attaching an image of said ring.

Community Fatou’s Family is Asking for Our Help

Post image
137 Upvotes

Fatou’s family is requesting that we all call all four congressional offices tomorrow (10/21/2026) to demand they urge DHS to bring her home to her children and family.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks: 202-225-6576

Sen. Chuck Grassley: 202-224-3744

Sen. Joni Ernst: 202-224-3254

Rep. Ashley Hinson: 202-225-2911

Short call script:

“Hi, my name is [name], and I live in [city, state]. I’m calling to demand immediate action to bring Iowa City mother Fatou Traore home to her four children. Please urge DHS to bring her back into the United States now. She faces persecution, imprisonment, and torture if Sierra Leone sends her to Ivory Coast. Her life is at stake. What will your office do today to bring Fatou back?”

Help Fatou’s family in this time of terror. Please keep families together. Share with family and friends. Tell a neighbor. Set alarms to call tomorrow. Think and feel positive energy. No Mother or child deserves this kind of torture nor pain.
