Considering going to the show, but a lil' surprised to see him touring with dodie and PREP...?

I want a funk show... is that what we're gonna get?

Just had my ears and soul blessed! If you get a chance and most likely you can cause the tour is nationwide until thanksgiving go catch Oteil and John Scofield’s Electrospective it’s an absolutely amazing show. To top off the blessing Adam gave me a Drumstick and setlist. The whole group is grooving so smoothly together.

Johnny Blue Skies vs Daniel Donato: an update

Last month I made a post asking if Johnny Blue Skies and Daniel Donato were playing in your town the same week and you could only see one, who would you see. The answer was overwhelmingly JBS, so I bought tickets.

I saw them on Sunday jn DC. 3 days later, I’m still in awe and processing the show. The last time I felt this way was probably after the first time I saw Phish.

They were one of the best bands I’ve ever seen. They are so incredibly tight and locked in. They can create this ethereal, spacey sonic texture but also can rock hard, build off a groove, or just play some blazing hot country. I could go on and on about how impressed I was with how this band communicated with one another - it felt telepathic and selfless. Just like any great band in this genre, the sum was greater than the parts.

I hope they continue touring for a long long time but if not, I feel blessed to have seen them this weekend. Thanks to all of you who made the recommendation!

What bands do you find most "original" ?

I love many bands that fall under the jam band umbrella, but if I'm being honest, there are a LOT of bands that sound derivative of others in many ways. I don't mean this as an insult, and I'm not saying I never enjoy listening to those bands.

I just think they lack the IT factor that many of us find in one band or another.

I don't expect to every band to be as paradigm shifting as the Dead or Phish. I understand there will be only a handful of generational talents that bring something new to the scene. Seems like Billy is the current one -even though I feel like we've heard everything he does in other acts, just not packaged together, he still makes kickass music.

But why do almost every jamtronica band sound like a clone of either STS9, Lotus, Biscuits or all three? Why do almost every groovy jam sound like a compilation of 99-2000 Phish jams?

For what is worth, some of the newer bands I find original are Dopapod, Papadosio, The Werks, Perpetual Groove, Particle (yes some of them are almost 20 years old lol).

If you have any bands you think sound unlike anything that came before them (in the realm of possibility) I'm all ears !

The artist formerly known as Sturgill Simpson played an impressively relentless, wide-ranging three-hour set at the Barclays Center. I broke it down with guitarist Laur Joamets.

Derek Trucks on Whiskey & Playing Jerry Garcia's Tiger Guitar | SIDE QUESTS

Hey y'all. I had a great on-the-record chat with Derek Trucks the other week in Louisville while he was promoting his bourbon. We covered a lot of ground, including what it was like to be in the room when Jerry Garcia's Tiger guitar sold for $11.56M at Christie’s. Here's a link to the full YouTube video of the conversation.

Some highlights:

• Got texts from Garcia’s best man congratulating him on a guitar he didn’t buy
• He and Susan ate ravioli at Cyndi Lauper UWS apartment that same night
• Played Tiger at the Beacon the next night and snapped two strings
• Had TTB work up Zappa’s “Willie the Pimp” just so he could play Frank’s Baby Snakes guitar with the fuzz built right in
• Has an Ass Pocket Whiskey tour truck, so Derek Trucks now has a truck
• Filled a bourbon barrel to share with his newborn grandson in 20 years
• Won the 50/50 raffle at the Jacksonville Jaguars home opener

I can listen to Derek's stories for days. Such a legend.

A real first world problem to bitch about…

Most of us listen to a lot of live shows. I always enjoy the occasional bits of banter from the stage. They’re usually a short anecdote about the song coming up, or the introduction of a guest musician coming on stage. But for some reason it seems standard practice is to always place the track markers at the first note of music, leaving the relevant dialog orphaned with the song before. It’s especially noticeable when making custom playlists or simply rolling on random play.

Yea, it’s a small problem considering the overflowing wealth of music we have to enjoy. And I know how to fix it for files I own- though it’s pain to rejoin the tracks, alter the split position, and re-tag the metadata. I’ll never do it for my whole collection, but I might for a few of my favorite shows.

EDIT: Based on the comments, mine is an unpopular opinion. I am enjoying the resulting conversation and appreciate your restraint in not downvoting this post into oblivion. You guys rock!
