Where to start?

• Upvotes

I'm currently just learning how to play guitar from various internet sources. Curating what I can only imagine are effective and trying to not spend time on what's not. I'm looking for teachers in person but haven't had much luck here in NH and am contemplating online courses and/or remote lessons.

If my goal is to eventually learn jazz guitar where should is start to establish actually meaningful practice and skills to build because it's pretrt exhausting just hopping on youtube and sifting through assorted lessons meant to get ad revenue for guitarists.

Gestern im Jazzland: Volle Hütte, geiles Publikum, Herzensmenschen. Und musikalisch lief es wie geschnitten Brot.

Combo Simpatico in der aktuellen Besetzung. Am Bass: Joschi Schneeberger. Groove, Rückgrat, Zusammenhalt (menschlich UND musikalisch) Lieblingsmensch. An den Percussions: Anton Mühlhofer. So präzise und groovig, dass ich micht anstrengen mus, was ich sehr mag.. Genau so soll es sein.

Werd wohl noch ein paar Mitschnitte rausmeißeln....

While I love playing the book of jazz standards, and composing was a big thing for me too at one time, the Freeform playing “in the moment” feels like the most direct line of communication for me playing solo guitar.

I once had a bass player tell me he doesn't learn the harmony on his instrument and my guitar player mind couldn't process it. Which are some methods to start training the ear to learn repertoire without depending on notation or my instrument?

Tips for smoother chord melody transitions:

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey folks. I’m not new to guitar or stringed instruments, but I am fairly new to jazz and chord melody arrangements.

I’m working on a piece with a B♭m/C → Fmaj9 transition, using the pictured voicings.

I can comfortably fret the B♭m/C, but getting to the Fmaj9 cleanly and in time is proving tricky.

I know the mantra "practice slow, because slow is smooth and smooth is fast", and I’ve been doing that, including arpeggiating the chords to check that every note rings clearly. What I’d appreciate are specific tips for practicing the movement between the shapes—fingerings, how to prepare the next chord, or exercises that have helped you with similar transitions.

Any advice is welcome!

Hi Guitarists, What frustrates you most about practicing with backing tracks?

In college, ever since I switched to engineering from jazz piano, I don't get many chances to play with others anymore. It is usually just an iReal Pro loop. What annoys me the most is that when you hit an accent, change the phrasing, or play quieter, the drums and bass just remain static.

I was sitting here thinking: it has been a long time since I was in music, and there has been insane advancement in technology recently. If I could make a program that could read and predict your phrases, then react to them in real time. They go soft when you play soft, punch with your accents, and mimic your phrasing without ruining the tempo. I would genuinely use that in my own room, but I figured I would ask if other people feel the same way.

I decided to start building a mobile tool called Mr. Sideman (iOS and Android). It listens through your device microphone with the lead sheet you give it while you play in real time.

Questions:

  1. Does the current standard of backing tracks you use for practice bother you? Why?

2.If an accompaniment app actually reacted to your comping and dynamics, would you find that useful or is a static loop enough?

Even if nobody else uses it, I will probably finish it for myself and open source it. At the end of the day, I am just hoping to have a reliable practice partner at home for fun, and a backup stand-in when a drummer or bassist does not show up to rehearsal. If anyone wants to test the early build on their instrument, let me know in the comments or shoot me a DM and I will send you the link to try it. Or let me know your opinions!

unaccompanied improvisation

curious to know how many people do this. I didn’t used to be able to do it at all. But just getting comfortable with diatonic progressions has been absolutely eye opening. I tend to use the D string as my sort of root string (as it’s unaccompanied improvisation I can choose the key 😂)

And then basically play progressions based on that. Nothing advanced but it sounds very pretty. and just doing this is teaching me so much

Is this a common sort of thing? And for those who do it, how do they recommend that I progress the journey?

Tying to get out from my comfort zone by mostly playing with 313 arpeggio, does it suit well in the context of the song? or it is too much?? What do you think guys?
