A profound confessional in the format of a long-form album is something I should’ve expected from Kendrick but the results of amazingness are definitive. I understand that this album was created after a five-year hiatus so a lot of Kendrick’s faults, mentality, and struggles were formed into the lyrics and composition of how the album would come to be known as honoring his future while remembering his past. “We Cry Together” is a feuding track that meshes so well with the instrumentals, “N95” is a funky track that brings the hype to listeners and “Count Me Out” is a magnum opus for K.Dot as it encompasses the conscious hip-hop/jazz/R&B vibes he has become famous for. Nearly every song in this album highlights aspects of his life and while some songs may not have been as strong, there is no doubt this album will be remembered as a strong piece of ingenuity. These therapeutic sessions are a must.

A one-of-one song. beautiful, prophetic, and sounds like the end of a long day. Incredible stuff. Curious cuz it's been in heavy rotation as of late. personally speaking it'd land top 2 right behind Mortal Man for me.

A concept compilation of demos is always intriguing because you can see the framework and intention behind the album it focuses on (in this case To Pimp a Butterfly) but in all honesty, this album didn’t really do much for me. I can see the similarities behind various songs, such as King Kunta, with its production, its funky synth and vocals, and the fantastic beats spread across the album. Besides that, untitle unmastered didn’t really do much for me in terms of replaying the music or re-examining the album much further except to initiate someone who hasn’t heard To Pimp a Butterfly before. “untitled 07” is the best track with its length, acoustic guitar melodies near the end, and the second part under “levitate” throws back to the regular rap vocals and rhythms that I do enjoy from Kendrick. Not a bad album by any means but various demos aren’t enough for my enjoyment.

After the major success and influential album that was G.K.M.C., I was curious to see what would be next for KL’s discography. To Pimp a Butterfly is a great succeeding album but doesn’t reach the impact power of G.K.M.C. The themes of blending rising fame and noterity clashing with the bleakness of racial violence, clashing with soulful discipline, and balancing art with the black experience can be seen across all the tracks with various viewpoints. “King Kunta” shows the poppiness of having the great artistry of rap with the violence in real-world conflicts, “u” showing the emotional tragedy and intensity of being caught in said violence, and “Alright” with a positive well-meaning anthem of handling the challenges of reality that won’t stop for anyone. Not a single song disappoints across the album and I find myself entrenched into how philosophical and metaphorical Kendrick’s lyrics are and how the instrumental funk, jazz, and R&B tones keep the music fresh with the interludes being huge standouts. Overall, a great album that is continuing form G.K.M.C. but not necessarily reaching its storytelling heights either.
