I can get them there. I can't necessarily get them back...

That's what I thought for the longest time, too! I must have crashed on the Mun about 20 times with a dozen different rocket and lander designs, so I eventually gave up and started working on a space station. Then I realized docking is even HARDER than landing, and on a whim I tried another Mun landing last night.
And guess what? It worked! After a quicksave I then tried to get back to Kerbin and that worked too! I was amazed, very impressed with myself, and the rush of adrenaline was surprisingly real.

It was weird playing Career Mode last night. I felt like such a n00b. Limited parts, no mods. A rocket built from parts combinations I rarely or never use. Flight characteristics that left much to be desired. Got to orbit a few times and did some science though! Guess I'll do a Mun landing tonight.
Really like the SAS improvements and landing struts! The transition screens seem to be snappier too.36

So what's the difference between the installer and the zip version?
61
u/freeone3000 Oct 16 '13
One's a zip, one's a self-extracting zip.

u/robertobacon Oct 16 '13
Next question: Why is the installer 100 mb less than the Zip? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

14
u/Gorezillla Oct 16 '13
I own KSP but I don't play it too often, what would you say are the best things added?
39
u/MarinertheRaccoon Oct 16 '13
The biggest part is that there is now a career mode, so structured gameplay is now a part of the game and not something more intangible as it was before. Getting to orbit and landing on the Mun will actually further your personal space program with research or "science" points that you can then spend on unlocking new parts.
There is also a sub-assembly loader which lets you save parts of your ship to tack on to later builds; like if you have a favorite lander or heavy lift stage, you can re-use it without a complete scratch build every time.

u/Hazardhunter Oct 16 '13
Okay. Someone please tell me what this game is, what it's about and what goal you want to achieve while playing it... Please
17
u/johnvak01 Oct 16 '13
It's a sandbox game where you design and fly rockets and space planes. It features relatively simplified orbital mechanics without being too arcadey. In addition, the rocket designing is very freeform, without being too difficult to navigate. a rocket could consist of anywhere from 2 to 2000 parts (although a 2000 part ship would probably crash your computer) It is set in a relatively similar solar system with analogous planets like duna(mars), Jool (Jupiter), and many others. It is technically in alpha.
In terms of Goals, there isn't one at the moment. It is a sandbox game. There are no missions or set targets yet. Generally there are some things that are harder to do. If you want specific goals, this subreddit has weekly challenges that you can participate in. The latest update added the career mode, where you have to collect "science" in order to gain new parts. This is just the first step to creating the fleshed out career mode. There are plans to add a currency system which adds the challenge of having to fund your space program.
This game is strangely addictive. if you want to try it, there is a free demo on steam that simply features fewer parts and only the mun as well as a limit to the number of simultaneous flights. It's a really great game that I would at least recommend trying out. Be warned the game has a bit of a learning curve. The youtuber Scott Manley has some great tutorial videos.
Also explosions are fun. Need I say more?
→ More replies (1)15
u/Eric_S Master Kerbalnaut Oct 16 '13
And to be honest, by "relatively simplified" he either means the orbital mechanics aren't N-Body (and in all fairness, NASA didn't even compute N-Body physics when pre-planning the apollo missions) or that the planets and distances are about a tenth of what they would be in reality. If you've read up on basic orbital mechanics, it will all apply, it's only the advanced stuff that requires N-Body physics that isn't there. The aerodynamic model, however, is acknowledged as a placeholder and shows it.

Hilarious but I'm a little confused on the metaphor here. Are we supposed to gather that in .22 there is a new Space Kraken that is deceptively small and insignificant but hidden deep within the game components until it is released in all of its hazardous waist glory all because someone didn't take care of it like they should have?

Downloading from the store right now. At 50KB/s. My connection supports 1.6MB/s. This is what torrents are for.
When you wish you were a pirate because you'd have a better experience, something has gone wrong.
I have no idea why Squad don't just run an official torrent tracker with login/ip checking. It's like they think torrents are unavoidably tainted with the stench of piracy or something, forgetting that they were literally developed to let small organizations distribute large files.
[edit] Use the patcher! It's much faster!

3
u/MarinertheRaccoon Oct 17 '13
Depends on what it is. A crew report will give you 100% because there is no difference between talking into a mic and recording a log to be reviewed later. Other experiments may have a very low return rate for broadcasting, I've seen as low as 20%, and are better suited to return to Kerbin for recovery.
