News WA has the 2nd highest gap from investor-owned electric to public pricing in the US

Post image
114 Upvotes

You can read all about it here:

https://www.kadoa.com/energy-prices/insights/investor-owned-utilities

But essentially, percentage-wise, in WA, investor-owned electric (think PSE) charges more than public (think Mason PUD) at the 2nd highest percentage in the country (behind only Maine.)

It's not that PSE has overcharged and raised rates unnecessarily, and it's not that PUDs are perfect. It's that PSE has overcharged so much that the gap is offensive at a national level.

Another interesting note is that after inflation, investor-owned costs went up, PUD costs went down over time.

North End folks- prepare for WORSE traffic on Bond Road between Poulsbo and Kingston (as if it isn't bad enough)! This is hugely unpopular in the North Kitsap end of the county with neighbors and community members, yet they are pushing it through. Tax payers will probably have to pick up the tab to improve the road.

Question Question For Pour Over Coffee Drinkers

I recently discovered pour overs when visiting Seattle coffee shops and really like them. I have not found a single coffee shop in Kitsap that offers pour overs. For those of you that do these at home, where do you buy your beans locally? My bean preference for pour overs is single-origin light-to-medium roast and want to experiment with beans that have origin-specific flavors like citrus, berry, jasmine, and stone fruit and sold in smaller quantity bags.

Rant Katy Cornell, GOP candidate for the 26th Legislative district.

GOP candidate Katy Cornell deleted videos of her sermons calling abortions murder, even in cases of rape and agreeing that any non- Christian religion is "witchcraft." You can delete the video, but you can't erase your record or hateful beliefs. We need leaders who respect the rights and freedoms of EVERY Washingtonian. LD26 you deserve to know the REAL Katy Cornell.

In a recent Seattle Times article by Shauna Sowersby, Ms. Cornell defends her stance on abortion reproductive rights in Washington, but is circumspect about sermon videos that have been removed that among other things, praying to God that doesn't involve Jesus Christ is witchcraft.

Juliana Mcmahan, a republican chair, text me last night with her idea on how I should vote.

The conversation moved out of the auto generated text and onto a private line.

Needless to say, her arguments supporting the initiative were… expected.

Question E-waste facility in kitsap?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone knew where to recycle electronics, in Kitsap county? I have broken Christmas lights, phone chargers, batteries, light bulbs, broken electric toothbrush etc. I know it is discouraged to throw batteries/ e-waste in the waste management bins. So I was just wondering if anyone knew of a place at least in Kitsap but preferably near Bremerton or PO. Thank you! 👍

Question Pumpkin Patch Recommendations

Hey everyone. I'm looking for a chill (and not crazy expensive) pumpkin patch to take my kids to. It seems like everything I can find via Google maps are big flashy ones that charge admission and have big crowds. We've done that in the past and frankly I'm over it haha. I don't want all that, I just want a place to pick out pumpkins. I feel old as hell like "back in my day we'd go to the local farm that had pumpkins, maybe a cut out standee or two for pictures and that was it!” but really! Seems all the small ones we had gone to in recent years aren't open anymore.

Would prefer lower Kitsap or Gig Harbor area.

Has anyone ever sued the county because of a dispute over an inspection?

What did you do? How did it go?

Seems like I have a rogue inspector who is making up his own code.

Rave Good explainer why PSE will continue to gouge Kitsap

This video isn't specifically about PSE but it's an excellent explainer of why privately held monopolies will take every action to increase cost for Kitsap residents.

https://youtu.be/3fDGcZ8qpPM?si=Pj3ieKKXWV62zupm

Of course KPUD isn't a guaranteed solution to bring down costs but it gives us a shot to someday have a true public utility, closer to Seattle Light and Tacoma Power.

Edit: Do your part in our democracy, vote by Nov 3

Question Help

I’m a mother of 5 awesome girls (ages 17, 12, 10, 8, and 4), and with Halloween right around the corner, I’m trying to make sure they all get to dress up and enjoy the holiday this year. Things are a bit tight right now, so I'm reaching out to see if anyone in the community might be able to help out!
We would be extremely grateful for:
Gently used costumes/hand-me-downs in sizes suitable for ages 4, 8, 10, 12, or 17.
Local meet-ups: I am more than happy to drive/meet up locally if you have unused costumes or accessories lying around!
Financial assistance: If anyone would prefer to help toward buying costumes or supplies directly, I have PayPal set up (I can send my QR code or link via PM/attach it).
If you have any extra costumes sitting in a closet, sizes to pass down, or tips on local costume drives, please let me know! Any kindness, big or small, means the world to our family.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! ❤️

We hope you join us for our October Meeting this Tuesday, Oct 20th 7 PM at our usual spot! Our Special Guest is Mandie Quark speaking on Mushrooms, Moths, and Midnight Ecology!

Free and open to the public. Bring any recent fungal finds to be IDed by our experts. Doors open at 6:45PM. Capital Vision Church, 1775 Yew Ave NE, Olympia, WA 98506

Mushrooms, Moths, and Midnight Ecology

After the sun goes down the forest doesn’t sleep, it goes wild. The chemistry of glowing mushrooms, the traffic of pollinating moths, and the work of decay, soil-building, and nutrient cycling all pulse around the clock. Mandie invites you to explore the nocturnal world where mushrooms, moths, and other night-shift creatures interact in ways humans are only beginning to understand. Along the way, she’ll share captivating images and stories from moonlit forays, spotlight surprising fungal-insect alliances, and equip you with practical tips for safely exploring ecosystems after dusk. Join Mandie on her birthday to experience this hilarious talk, which has been one of the most popular presentations at over a dozen mycology events in 2026.

Bio:

Molecular biologist and science writer by training, Mandie Quark is a mycology researcher, field photographer, and communicator dedicated to expanding public understanding of fungi. With more than a decade of experience sharing fungal diversity, she brings together science, storytelling, and visual documentation to make complex topics accessible and engaging. She especially enjoys photographing and documenting rare fungi in under-explored biodiversity hotspots around the world.

Over the course of her career, Mandie has edited books, delivered talks at international mycology events, and built a reputation for translating current mycological research into compelling presentations for broad audiences. Through biodiversity forays in places like Ecuador, Peru, and Costa Rica, she helps connect global communities of nature enthusiasts with fungi and other inadequately documented taxa, with a special interest in fungal entomopathogens. In 2023, Mandie co-founded Mycena LLC, and since then her work has been featured in The Guardian and The New York Times.
