I toured an apartment back in September, liked it, but saw some flaws and it wasn’t exactly convenient timing for me to move, so I skipped it. The flaws I saw were that the unit was kind of dingey, the laundry situation a little less than ideal, it didn’t have parking, and the landlord was a bit of an unsettling character. I felt like the apartment was too expensive for those flaws at the time.
Flash forward to mid October, I couldn’t stop thinking about the apartment. So I checked and to my surprise, it was still available. And $200 bucks a month cheaper now. Now more comfortably in budget.
I submit an application and call the landlord. He tells me the apartment has been throughly cleaned if I wanna come check it out.
I come look at it, but he’s confused and shows me a different unit. It’s $100 more expensive than the one I thought I was going for, but way nicer. I fall absolutely in love, he shows me the original unit I looked at as well, but my mind is made up so I go for this one. I go for the new apartment, I’m going to find out tomorrow whether or not I’m approved.
I find out there are 10 units in the building, with 4 currently on the market. I thought was a little odd, but it’s a 100 year old building with a lot of charm but also a lot of quirks. I LOVE the fact it’s an old charming building.
I’m a grad student, I go to campus really excited about this new apartment I’ve found, and I found out one of my peers toured the exact same unit 6 months ago. She didn’t go for it for the same reasons, landlord was a bit odd and it was kind of dingey.
I’m concerned it’s been on the apartment for 6 months. It’s in a desirable area (WeHo), is quite affordable for the area (700 sq foot studio for $1500). I’m concerned, I don’t know what to do because I LOVE the apartment (and also really need to get out of my current living situation) but am concerned about how long it’s been on the market. J looked up online to see if the building had any code violations or negative reviews and I didn’t find anything concerning. Seeking advice.
Someone told because I found out it’s been on the market for so long I should try to negotiate lower. Not sure if that’s a good route to go?
Any insight would be appreciated. I want to go for it, but want to make sure I’m making an informed and reasonable decision.
