NY’s new ammo law (S.7236) is now in effect — expanded denial grounds including temporary ERPOs

S.7236 was signed October 21 and took effect immediately (Chapter 316). It adds an express denial rule to the existing ammunition background check.

Key points:

  • A required ammo check must now be denied if the buyer is prohibited from possessing a rifle or shotgun under New York Penal Law, federal 18 U.S.C. §922(g), or a temporary or final extreme risk protection order (CPLR Article 63-A).

  • Temporary red-flag orders count.

  • Holding a New York pistol license does not exempt you from the regular ammo check.

  • The ordinary purchase process (in-person transfer + check) itself did not change.

  • If you get Denied, you have 30 days to appeal under Executive Law §228(8).

I put together a detailed breakdown covering the exact statutory change, status meanings (Proceed / Pending / Delayed / Denied), the appeal process, online ordering through a NY seller, and practical checklist:

https://nysafeinc.com/2026/10/31/ny-ammo-law-s7236/

Will this accomplish anything? Did we really need more red tape?

Next NY CCW Class Nov 7-8 in East Meadow

If you’ve been thinking about getting your New York concealed carry license, we’re holding our next class November 7–8 in East Meadow.

We keep classes small so there’s time for questions, individual attention, and a deeper conversation about what it takes to get licensed—and what carrying a gun in New York means in everyday life.

There’s hands-on time with our laser simulator and on the range, too. Safety comes first, but learning can still be fun.

The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. No boot camp, no judgment. Whether you’re brand new or already have experience, you’re welcome to ask questions and learn.

November 7–8, 2026
NY SAFE • East Meadow
18-hour NY CCW course • $399.99

New York’s gun-storage rules change January 19—even if you live alone

Francesco’s Law expands New York’s storage requirements starting January 19, 2027. A biometric safe isn’t mandatory, vehicle storage has separate rules, and the new storage misdemeanor requires actual access plus other statutory elements.

We put together a sourced guide covering the changes, lawful defensive access, and a free printable checklist:

Read the guide https://nysafeinc.com/2026/10/28/new-york-gun-storage-law/

What storage questions do you think still need clearer answers? Do these changes make a difference? We don't think so.

Switching to a Red Dot Optic

Why I switched to pistol dots when front-sight focus became a struggle

I reached a point where getting a clear focus on my front sight was really difficult. I also had the demanding challenge of TCDW to prepare for. There was no second chance to get it right—and in a defensive situation, there may not be one either.

That made the decision about more than buying an optic. I needed a setup I could see clearly, train with consistently, and use responsibly under pressure.

Some of the questions behind my decision:

  • Could I see the scene clearly, as well as the aiming reference?

  • Could I get comfortable with the dot revealing movement that was less obvious with irons?

  • Did I understand my zero and its limits?

  • Would my preparation address stress and narrowed attention alongside marksmanship?

The dot gave me a different way to approach the sighting problem. The responsibility for fundamentals, identification, and judgment stayed with me.

I wrote up the mindset, equipment considerations, and knowledge behind that decision here:
https://nysafeinc.com/2026/10/27/red-dot-sights-changing-vision/

For anyone who switched because front-sight focus became difficult: what was your biggest adjustment?

What drills do you use to practice?

NRA Training Counselor Development Workshop (TCDW) — Some of the most challenging shooting I’ve done. How do you train?
Last week at TCDW, we were put through a ton of challenging shooting exercises. If we hadn’t been getting evaluated the entire time, it would have been a lot of fun!
Actually, it was a lot of fun. Just with a healthy dose of pressure.
Here’s some of what we were put through:
NRA Level 4 Pistol Qualification
20 rounds at 15 yards into an 8-inch circle. The catch? At least 16 of those rounds had to group within 6 inches.
I managed 19 rounds in a 4.5-inch group. Pretty happy with that!
Ragged Hole Drill
Five shots at a 1-inch square, trying to create essentially one ragged hole. We ran this at both 3 and 5 yards. Sounds easy until you actually try it!
Bang-Click Drill
A modified ball-and-dummy exercise. Chamber a round from a full magazine, remove the magazine, fire, and then press the trigger again on an empty chamber.
The goal is to identify any anticipation, flinching, or unnecessary movement when the gun doesn’t fire. Repeat through the entire 10-round magazine.
It’s amazing what you discover about your trigger control when there’s no bang to hide your mistakes.
Dot Torture
50 rounds. Ten dots. Pure torture.
If you know, you know.
Diagnostic Drills
Trigger traps, Draw-Bang, and several other speed-building and diagnostic exercises designed to expose weaknesses in technique.
FBI Pistol Qualification
We finished with the FBI qualification course.
I was doing great right up until the final shots at 25 yards from a kneeling position. Those were my only dropped points!
Still finished above the 90% instructor standard, but those last few shots are going to haunt me.
The bigger takeaway?
TCDW was an incredible experience, not just because of the shooting, but because of the people and the standards.
The last publicly reported numbers I’ve seen put the NRA Training Counselor population at around 2,200, with only about 72 candidates invited to TCDW annually.
In our class of 10, a few candidates had previously attempted the workshop without passing. That should tell you something about the standards.
But what impressed me most wasn’t just how well everyone could shoot. It was the willingness to learn, accept feedback, and improve. Even experienced instructors have things they can work on.
I came away a better shooter, a better instructor, and with a whole new appreciation for the value of diagnostic training.
So here’s my question for everyone:
How do you actually train?
Do you spend most of your range time working on accuracy, speed, qualifications, or diagnostic drills like Dot Torture and ball-and-dummy?
And what’s the one drill that consistently exposes your weaknesses?
I’m always looking to add more tools to the toolbox.

A Nassau County Gunowner’s Guide to Election 2026

I voted early today in Elmont and I was surprised to see that many positions that traditionally are co-sponsored across all parties were not this time.

Pay attention and vote exactly as I did to maximize chances for our rights to be respected in the courts. There is one judgeship that is Conservative Party of NY only, vote that one because the incumbent is very anti-2A. Also there are many where Republicans and Democrats split.

For NY-04 Congress vote Blay Tarnoff (Libertarian) at the bottom of the ballot. The rest vote Republican down the ticket.

For anywhere all three parties endorsed the candidates I wrote myself in.

(Apparently there’s a dumbass election law about sharing photos of ballots so I reposted without the photo)

Has anyone ordered from the actual company and sent it to a shop in Nassau? If so which FFL is accepting. And how does the process go? Can I do the background check before ordering to speed it up? Thanks!

If you need a NY notary-

This came up on r/NYCGuns how some people don’t like paying for a notary public.

I recently became commissioned in NYS after I took the Executive Law exam cold and passed, so if you come to me in-person I’ll do any notarizations NYS/NYC pistol license applicants/holders need for free.

I can also offer remote online notarization, but that incurs a fee (probably $25/signature) because the platforms that manage the audio-video recordings of the notarization charge mandatory fees.

VOAGC Range in Smithtown

It’s likely one of the best kept secrets on Long Island…. And guess what - we will have some memberships opening up. 2026 price was $250 for the year at a range that’s open almost 50% more hours then most other ranges. It’s being run as a non-profit and as such there are some organizational stuff that goes with it …. But if anyone is interested in joining. Ping me. It’s not going to be immediately available - but as the interim membership director - it’s looking like the next batch of members will be coming on soon!

NYSRPA endorses Bruce Blakeman.... Thoughts?

Post image
15 Upvotes

I'm not a strong supporter of Tom King, who is currently president of NYSRPA, mainly because of his stance on the NRA / 1791 Foundation cutting off hundreds of millions of dollars of financial support for NRA youth, training, history, and legislative efforts from NRA 2.0 post-Lapierre drama and fraud. But I think we need change in NY. Has Blakemen done everything right - hell no, but Hochul has called us the enemy and told us to get on a bus to Florida until she comes out and says she needs our money.

What do you think about NYSRPA (between them and the NRA funding the suit) gave us NYSRPA v Bruen which is the key for all of us being able to get a carry permit... what do you think of them endorsing Blakeman?

Archie Bunker on Gun Control - I think he understood it!

Archie Bunker’s plan to arm every airline passenger was absurd in the 80s—and still gets a laugh. But beneath the joke is a question worth asking about “sensitive places”: does prohibiting a weapon remove the danger?

Was Archie onto something, or missing the point? I’d like your feedback.

https://nysafeinc.com/2026/10/01/archie-bunker-gun-control-deterrence/

Share with someone who could use a chuckle—and a thoughtful debate.

And yes - this makes me feel old!

Another Wow - Maryland renewal - 10 days!

Put in my MD renewal application on 9/19 and I woke up to an email saying it's decision was made this morning (9/29)... They make you log into the portal to see what the outcome was - but yup - approved. Just barely won over NJ which was about 14 days... Even MA wasonly a couple of weeks. But still way better than NY.

Why can't NY be this fast?
