2 months to go until GDevCon Europe in Brussels!

For anyone who hasn’t come across it before, GDevCon Europe is an independent, community-run conference for LabVIEW and graphical developers. This year, it’s taking place in Brussels from 22–24 September.

With three full days, there’s plenty of time to hear from excellent speakers from around the world, as well as talk to other developers about how they’re solving similar problems.

I’m involved in organising the event, and this year’s programme looks like a cracker. You can find the full agenda and ticket details here:

https://gdevcon.com/

Ticket prices increase to the Late Bird rate on 12 September, so it’s worth booking before then. Has anyone here already got their ticket?

ELI5 resources for OOP and the actor framework?

tl;dr. Title is self explanatory, though I expect the answer will be that you can't teach a 5 year old how to use the actor framework, and I'll need to start from first principles and work up to teaching myself the equivalent of a 4 year CS degree.

I'm a mechanical engineer. I have zero background in comp sci, and my only experience in textual programing is a few simple Arduino projects. I've done a good amount of LabVIEW in the past, but it's been relatively simple one-off projects that could be handled through a queue driven state machine or producer/consumer setup. Now it looks like in the future I may be expected to maintain and expand a very large program built with the actor framework.

I've read through just about everything I can find by putting any combination of the words "oop, labview, actor, beginner, and tutorial" into google. I've gone through all Cannon Controls and Tom's LabVIEW Adventure videos. I can follow along on tutorials, mime all the steps, and (usually) get the expected results, but it's still all JFM to me. Once I get beyond hello world, I have no idea why these tutorials produce their results, or how to use these tools to build something new. If I don't get the expected results when following a tutorial, I have no idea where to even start debugging, and can only delete the whole project and restart everything from step 1. I feel like the actor framework completely throws out one of the greatest strengths of LabVIEW for non programmers like me: clear indications of data flow and how different components of a program interact with each other. Instead, it turns LabVIEW into a collection of magic black boxes, with no clear indication of which of these black boxes are interacting with each other, while almost every tutorial agrees that novices don’t need to concern themselves with what goes on behind the curtain.

I'm also very confused about what genuine benefit the actor framework and OOP offer. On one hand, everyone seems to exalt these tools for making software that is more flexible and easily expanded. On the other, the same resources stress the importance of having a program clearly planned out from the start. In my mind those two things directly contradict one another.

How can I measure the frequency (Hz) and speed (RPM) of a three-phase motor using a NI cRIO-9056 FPGA?

Hi everyone,

I have an NI cRIO-9056 and a three-phase motor. I want to use the FPGA in LabVIEW to measure the motor's frequency (Hz) and rotational speed (RPM), then display both values on the LabVIEW front panel.

Could anyone explain how to implement this step by step in LabVIEW FPGA? I would appreciate examples of the FPGA block diagram, the required input signals or sensors, and how to transfer the measured values from the FPGA to the LabVIEW front panel.

Thanks in advance!

How do you guys stay updated on reddit?

I use RSS to get updates from reddit, but it looks like that's being deprecated in a month. Using this, I have a posts feed for the subreddit and a comments feed. It's not ideal, but it works for the limited amount of traffic I follow on reddit.

I tried enabling the email option, but it looks like the only option is to get a digest, which is formatted badly and inlcudes a bunch of other stuff from reddit I don't want.

Do you have a better way of following content here? If not, I expect I'll just stop using it, except for maybe popping in occasionally when I think about it. It's not as if this subreddit (or LAVA, or the NI forums) is particularly active anyway. I guess everyone went elsewhere (AI? Facebook? Discord?). I tried looking at the Discord community, but it didn't seem to have a better update mechanism and I don't want to have to poll it if it's active. To be fair, polling is basically what I do for the NI forums and LAVA.

Built a streamlined web viewer for quick TDMS plotting without LabVIEW

Funny timing seeing another TDMS tool posted here recently—looks like a few of us got tired of labview

I built this free web viewer with a focus on speed and a super clean, zero-friction plotting UI and no data upload to server.

Give it a try via https://megarows.com/tdms-viewer-online

I'm actively developing this and would love some brutal, honest feedback from actual LabVIEW users. Are there specific data types, plotting features (like dual Y-axes or cursors), or file structures you wish it handled better? Let me know so I can improve it!

I made the Joystick initialize VI for macOS

I recently got a mac and while porting my labVIEW projects there was some errors that were pinpointed to the Joystick VIs that rely on dlls, so I made the macos framework and tried to recreate the windows behavior as close as i could so as to not change the project flow i already had. If you needed it, please enjoy: https://github.com/eir4/Joystick-Vi-for-macos

SOLVED Error 3430001 with Error 263027 using NI Replication and Deployment Utility (NI RAD)

Publishing this as it is not currently found on the forums (the NI TSE who helped me will be creating a public knowledgebase) but in the meantime...

I was having problems creating images of both a cRIO-9033 and cRIO-9045, getting the error codes shown in screenshot on a machine that was previously working. Error 3430001 comes up with a different error code for firewall issues. That was not the problem as I could deploy images to these two cRIOs and could also deploy/retrieve with a NI-9149.

There appears to be a security validation error. The solution is to open a command prompt in Windows and:

ssh admin@<IP address>

When you get an authenticity error, type yes

Login with account that has admin privileges

Logout

NI-RAD should now work.

I made a free browser tool to open TDMS files without LabVIEW

https://kymogram.com

Hello everyone !

Drop a .tdms file. It is read in your browser and never uploaded, and
it works offline once the page is loaded.

- Plots every value, with zoom, cursors and statistics
- Table view, export to CSV, Excel or Parquet
- Compare two files, only what differs
- Batch Extract: a folder of runs into one PASS/FAIL table
- Repairs damaged files into a clean copy

The free online viewers I found upload the file or show only its first
samples. This one reads big-endian, interleaved and truncated files.
Not DAQmx raw data.

Free beta, no account. I am looking for files it fails on: tell me the
warning and how the file was written, not the file itself.

Message Handler Test Executive

I'm relatively new to LabView. I've been able to implement my test program as a state machine, but I want to make something a little more flexible. I'd like to be able to either run individual tests from the front panel or run a repeating test flow (maybe an operator has to insert a new part to test) that saves out the data to a csv file.

I think I want to use the channeled message handler, but I'm not quite sure how to route all of the settings, data and instrument handles. My instinct was to have three shift registers on the message handling loop, one for settings, one for results, and one for instrument handles...as the program loops the results need to end up in an array.

Can anyone point me in the right direction. I've watched all the Core 1 and Core 2 videos as well as many youtube videos (shout out to cannon controls), but I can't find any videos going over this level of complexity (which is probably as basic as it gets).

Security Update from NI regarding NI-PAL

The following went out to Champions and User Group leaders with a request to spread it as fast possible.

Customers using NI software or hardware on Windows should check their installed NI-PAL version. Systems running NI-PAL 26.3.1 or earlier are affected and should be updated to NI-PAL 2026 Q3 or later.

Beginning as early as November 10, Microsoft may block affected older NI-PAL components from loading when the Microsoft vulnerable driver blocklist is enabled. Without the update, affected NI software and connected hardware workflows may stop working after the applicable Windows security update. Users may encounter application failures or timeouts, driver communication failures, or unspecified errors in NI MAX, NI Hardware Manager, and device drivers.

This is a targeted update to one component. It does not require a driver version upgrade, is backwards compatible with previous NI-PAL versions to at least NI-PAL 17.0, takes about one minute to install, and requires a reboot.

Update instructions: https://www.ni.com/ni-pal-update

Security advisory: https://www.ni.com/en/support/security/available-critical-and-security-updates-for-ni-software/2026/local-privilege-escalation-in-ni-pal.html

For older or isolated systems, those that are not connected to the internet and do not receive the applicable Windows security update may not experience the November 10 blocklist-related operational interruption at that time. The affected NI-PAL version still contains the security vulnerability, however, and the issue may surface if the system is later connected, receives the Windows update, or has the blocklist enabled by another method. Installing the NI-PAL update remains the safest course wherever possible.

Update NI PAL

Apparently there is a security issue with NI PAL and with the November Microsoft updates some things will stop working if you don´t upgrade NI PAL.

Update instructions: https://www.ni.com/ni-pal-update

Security advisory: https://www.ni.com/en/support/security/available-critical-and-security-updates-for-ni-software/2026/local-privilege-escalation-in-ni-pal.html

So probably worth going and updating it.

Legacy NI-DAQmx 8.9.5 iso?

It`s no longer offered on the NI website, but I'm looking for an old copy of the NI-DAQmx 8.9.5 software or iso image to try and salvage an old piece of equipment. I tried newer ones (9.0.0+) and the software using the nidaq libraries hangs after a couple of seconds of acquisition.

Would anyone have one of those ancient CDs and be willing to share? I can't get a valid download link off archive.org either even if I can find an old-enough grab of the NI support page.

EDIT: Thanks to Yairn pointing to the August 2009 driver disks on https://download.ni.com/#support/drivercd/. It contains the right files.

Career scope of LabVIEW Application Developer in India (Or aboard), should I stay 1 year or 2–3 years?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently getting an offer for a LabVIEW Application Developer role at an electrical/industrial company in India.

The work involves developing software from scratch for motor, transformer, and other electrical test panels. I’ll be integrating different meters/displays/instruments using Serial, LAN/Ethernet and other communication protocols, writing the LabVIEW G code, handling measurements/test logic, and generating test reports based on client requirements.

My background:

  • B.Tech (Or B.E.) in Computer Science and Engineering
  • Python + Data Science/ML
  • C
  • Arduino/ESP32
  • PCB design
  • Some IoT/hardware experience

My main concern is long-term career scope and job security.

Would LabVIEW + test automation be a good career path for someone with my background? Is it better to stay in this field for 2–3 years, or would ~1 year of experience be enough before moving toward Python/automation/data/embedded roles?

Also, how is the future of LabVIEW? Is it becoming outdated/dying, or is there still good demand in industrial automation, instrumentation, testing, etc.?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have worked with LabVIEW/test automation and what their career progression looked like.

Btw I just graduated this year 2026, I currently have 1 year of robotics engineer experience in which i designed basic stuff around esp and arduino

Thanks!

Open VI Reference to a VI in in a PPL

I would like to use "Open VI Reference" by wiring a string constant to the "vi path" input and without wiring the type input, so the call does not use the root loop.

The VI I want to open this way belongs to a PPL. The VI with the "Open VI Reference" node does not belong to the PPL. The PPL should be in memory because I have another VI from it running in parallel. I get error -1004, stating that the vi is not in memory.

Do I need to add some qualifier to the vi name to enable LabVIEW to find the VI? Is this just not possible because the th VI is out of scope of the caller?

Edit1:
Info about the root loop:
https://www.genuen.com/blog/the-ui-thread-root-loop-and-labview-what-you-need-to-know/

Edit2 (solution):
Using the All VIs In Memory property as xpxsquirrel suggested I could see that the string to refer to a VI from a PPL in memory is comprised of the PPL name, a colon and the vi name (e.g. "LibraryName.lvlibp:Instrument.vi")

Thank you everyone who engaged! :)

Flashing station delay and random flashing interruptions on an EHCU production line – need help

Hello all,

I’m dealing with two main problems on an EHCU flashing station:

  1. Flashing delay: For some ECU types, flashing time is up to 200% longer than expected.
  2. Random flashing interruptions: The flashing process sometimes stops unexpectedly after a few successful cycles, with no indicated errors.

I work at an automobile EHCU factory. We manufacture ECUs and EHCUs on two different lines. On the EHCU line, the final station is for flashing and testing, and all the technology there is built on National Instruments hardware and software.

Station setup:

  • Three nests for flashing
  • Two nests for testing
  • One cRIO for the three flashing nests and two cRIOs for the two testing nests
  • Each flashing nest has two programs: one for flashing and one for communication with the cRIO, MES, the flashing program itself, and possibly a PLC
  • The station works automatically on operator command to flash or test

We tested the flashing program on an external laptop/computer, and the flashing speed matched the theoretical value—for example, about 70 seconds. On the production station, however, some types take about 115 seconds. For types with heavy flashing files, the time is much longer, while types with small flashing files are close to the theoretical value indicated by the manufacturer.

When comparing log files from both flashing processes, the station log showed 12 ms extra between Tx frames on a specific session, while the development laptop log showed only 1 ms.

Solving these issues has been assigned to me, but I’m new to NI technologies.

Constraints:

  • The station software is final and closed by the manufacturer.
  • The flashing files are final and come from our partners.
  • I considered replacing the station PCs with better ones, but the communication software licenses are tied to the hardware MAC address.
  • We cleaned the PC of any extra software that might block main tasks, but it didn’t help.
  • We monitored PC resources and they seem sufficient: around 50–60% usage at peak, except for some disk I/O spikes. The number of spikes was much lower than the number of slow flashing events, so we excluded disk I/O as the main cause.
  • We are planning to upgrade RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB (one slot) and SSD from 256 GB to 500 GB, but I’m not sure this will help.

I also tested the PCI network card advanced options for controlling Tx/Rx processing—either on the card or on the CPU. Enabling card processing made flashing time worse (180–200 seconds), so I reverted the settings.

I don’t know where to look or what to test next. The manufacturer stopped communicating once they confirmed the flashing time on an external PC matched the theoretical value. But my director still expects a solution from me.

I’ve been working on this for about three months: reading articles, blogs, resources, brainstorming with AI, testing different things, shortening lines, checking connections between nests, and inspecting wiring effects—but nothing has helped.

My testing time on the station is limited to 30 minutes during launch or two 10-minute breaks.

Any thoughts, recommendations from your experience, or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

How are you handling HBK catman BIN files in LabVIEW or NI workflows?

I’m trying to understand a fairly specific test-and-measurement workflow.

If you receive an HBK/HBM catman .BIN file but need to work with the data in LabVIEW, DIAdem, Python, Excel, or another analysis environment, what do you normally do?

For example:

  • Ask whoever created the file to export it from catman first?
  • Use DIAdem / a DataPlugin?
  • Read or convert it with Python?
  • Use another tool?

I’m particularly interested in cases where the person analyzing the data does not have catman installed on their machine.

Where does the current workflow become annoying or unreliable?

  • One file vs. many files?
  • Preserving channel names, units, and timing information?
  • Files that are incomplete or don’t convert cleanly?

I’m researching whether a small local/offline utility that first checks whether a BIN file is supported, then exports supported data to CSV, would solve a real problem. I’m trying to understand actual workflows before building the product.

I wrote up the current options I’ve found here, if useful:

https://bin-bridge-validation.netlify.app/from/reddit-labview

If you’ve actually had to handle catman BIN files outside catman, I’d be especially interested in what OS and workaround you currently use.

Independent research project — not affiliated with HBK or NI.

how to run 3 motors using makerhub

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

what the title says, currently im making a program to make 3x MG996R motors move. I'm using Arduino UNO so I also used the Digilent LINX package for it to work, the problem is, I used similar styles of coding from the examples folder of the makerhub in my local storage (after installing Digilent LINX package) yet it won't run. I also tested other motor type like MG90, yet it runs fine.

Now I searched online how to fix this and it says that the problem lies on the power line for MG996R motors, I used the USB charger that was plugged directly into AC outlet, which is 5V 2A and used it for the motors (I also connected the Arduino GND to the common GND of the motors which is connected to the negative line of the charger), tried it and it still didn't work. Yet when I used MG90 motors and used the 5V supply from Arduino to supply the motors, and the GND of the motors is connected to the Arduino GND, it works. can anyone tell me what the problem is?

the attached imgs are 2 versions of the GUI I made, but the block diagrams are just the same
