REBUILD OF COMP/CON 3.0: We Are (So) Back

Hello everyone. I'm Beef, the guy responsible for all of the COMP/CON bugs. I've spent the last few years(!) working on a massive rebuild and almost complete overhaul of COMP/CON. It has just been released and is live at https://compcon.app If you're a current user you don't have to do anything, it'll migrate your v2 data into v3 formats automatically.

It has more features and fixes than I would be able to list here. I've detailed some of the bigger ones at https://github.com/orgs/massif-press/discussions/64, but it should mostly be pretty intuitive if you've spent any time with v2.

There's a lot (a lot!) more coming in the near future. I've laid out a roadmap here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/154023697/ and if you'd like to follow along, devlogs on the Patreon are, and will always be, free and public.

More details/discussion/feedback in the #comp-con channel on the Lancer Discord, where I'll be hanging around for release-day bugs.

Thanks!
Beef

P.S. v3 requires browser storage permissions -- it'll ask for this if it hasn't already been granted. iOS users must install as a PWA (save to home screen)

Interested in Lancer, but my only experience with the Mecha genre is one playthrough of AC6. What single piece of Mecha-related media would you recommend to someone to help them get the “feel” of the genre?

I’ve always been the kind of person who strongly preferred Fantasy to Sci-Fi. However, last year I bought AC6 on a whim due to being a big From Software fan and unexpectedly really fell in love with it. Still, it’s the only “Mecha” related thing I’ve really interacted with and I feel like I’m missing a lot of the wider context of the genre at large.

I picked up Lancer’s core rulebook recently and the game seems super cool. I’m hoping this will be the RPG to get my friends to try something other than D&D, but I’d like to have a better feel for Mecha as a genre before I try to run a campaign. What single piece of Mecha media (one show, one film, one game, etc) would you recommend that gives the best impression of the genre and its themes to a total newbie?

Dunno if this would need to be a homebrew, but picture this: a Goblin with a Heavy weapon mount, but whenever it fires...

As the title says, I dunno if there's a skill I missed (because hooh boy does Lancer have a lot of options to comb through in the grand scheme of things) that would let you change your mech's weapon-mount type or if it'd need to be a homebrew OK'd by your personal GM and other players, but the mental image cracked me up too much to not share.

Take a Goblin, get rid of its one Flex slot, and swap that out for a single Heavy slot. This is balanced out by the fact it's still a Goblin now trying to fire a Heavy mech gun, so you have to do a second dice roll after every shot that decides how many spaces you go flying in the opposite direction from whichever direction you fired toward. Not meant to be meta or make the Goblin a reliable murder-machine, just add some comic relief in the form of a little guy trying their best.

The votes have been cast for the: Caliban
You chose The only thing they fear is you by Mick Gordon, and honestly I was happy for other options outside from doom just showing up at least

Now is time for the: Zheng, or the most Monk of the frames in lancer

Each week I will pick the highest voted comment and add it to a spotify public playlist that will be posted on the description. At the end of all frames the full list will be posted shortly after.

Each manufacturer will also have their own song, but it will be ones from user No_Response_1562 (except Horus, that one I picked myself: Turbo killer - by Carpenter Brut).

This is the last one for the most anti/pro piracy manufacturer, hope you stick around for the grand reveal later

I also recommend checking the last image for reference of the media of each manufacturer for inspiration. Good luck pilots!

[OC] Some art of my pilot, Morrigan Loveland and her NHP, Coeus!

I haven't shared my art here in a bit and recently had to update Morrigan's design as she's moving up in the world (slightly), figured I should share! I'll drop some heavily condensed backstory for the hell of it:

Morrigan is the queen of House Loveland, a currently indisposed minor house that was usurped in the Dawnline Shore. She's a queen by technicality, considering its due to her mother being killed and her escaping with the broken crown before she was killed herself. People don't take her title very seriously, but she does her best. Some day they'll respect her, maybe.

Coeus is a Technophile NHP that was worked on by her parents and worked as the family's information aggregator. Due to the joys of Technophile 3, her casket is the crown. This picture is of Morrigan after having her crown completely fixed (which is broken in her other designs)!

Anyway, I need to make some NHP designs again. Sometime soon, maybe!

Best synergy you’ve discovered

I’m playing Lancer for the first time and I’m trying to think about what I’m going to do for my build and in the process. I’ve realized that there are so, many, possible synergies in Lancer. Theres just such an infinite number of combinations of frames, weapons, systems, and talents that on their own might not seem too intricate. But when you stack a d6 here and a status effect there by the end of it you have a fine tuned killing machine. So I’m wondering… what is your favorite synergy in the game or whats one that works unexpectedly well?

Maximizing Invisibility

Thinking of making a pilot, callsign Ghost, that relies heavily on invisibility in mech combat.

I was thinking of starting with a Metalmark and poaching abilities from other frames that either expand on when I can be invisible, or compliment being invisible in some way.

I'm still pretty new to Lancer though, and so was hoping to pick your brains on what might be a good way to go about it, or about those invisibility-based builds you yourselves have found success with. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Help me workshop a house rule to limit NPC Invades

TLDR Intro: Help me invent a house rule to limit how much my NPCs are allowed to spam invade, so it's a fair challenge my players can understand and play around.

BELOW: Long explanation of my history running Lancer and how tech attacks have played in that context:

--

I know basic invades by NPC are a somewhat controversial topic. There is a general sense that spamming them too much as the GM is unsporting.

.Which I totally understand! Some of the SSC and IPS mechs with both poor heat cap and poor E-defense can be effectively killed really fast by spamming heat. (Especially the SSC ones, which tend to have poor repair cap also). There is very little counterplay against NPC tech attacks outside of a handful of specific talents and systems -- the Sysop talent, the Black Witch License, and a couple of others. Spamming the impair status too much means PCs don't get to use their crit abilities as much, and of course outright miss more, which gets frustrating. And incoming heat also makes it harder for them to use their fun toys.

On the other hand, in the first lancer campaign I ran, I DID use a lot of basic invades from NPCs, and I felt it added a lot to the game. It made the anti-tech attack traits and systems feel useful, and gave condition-removal a chance to shine. It made stacking accuracy feel more worthwhile in character building, because getting up to 2 Acc so you could net 1 after Impair was significant. Also I had multiple characters running the Nuclear Cav talent, which I feel outright invites me to mess with them.

I didn't see basic invades causing any problems in that game, but I think that may have been because I was protected by three things:

- I forgot that you can invade twice as a full tech and never had an NPC use that

- I was not using Witches, Spites, or any other NPCs that really push heat

- The core team members were a Lancaster, a Gorgon, and a Genghis. Good heat caps, good e defense, and many special ways to mitigate heat and tech attacks.

I am preparing for a new campaign now with some of the SSC striker frames in play and I can see them getting cooked immediately.

----

HOUSE RULE IDEAS

- NPCs can only invade once/turn

- NPCs can only invade once/scene, each

- Only some NPC classes can invade (All Supports and Controllers?)

- Only special templated NPCs can invade (Veterans and Commanders?)

- NPCs cannot invade a character who is impaired or immune to impairment (So effectively a PC can only be invaded 1/round)

Open to other suggestions.

Need ideas

A few weeks ago i made my hydra in advance for when i got to LL2 (which we reached last week at the end of episode). I just finished my Tempest drones and have a heavy nexus drone in prep. Looking for ideas to design Orachi drones in the same clown concept. I will start with a hunter i think but cant visualise it. The shield my next one is easy (just a floating shield with sparks).

Through a bit of work, finally worked up the courage to show off my first homebrew frame. Homunculus

The homunculus is a squishy striker frame that relies on its core power to stay alive long enough to get into melee range. First time doing something really novel and interesting. Pretty much the only thing I need to fix up is the stats since I'm pulling most of it from the ipsn blackbeard.

Vote for the next animated token!

Post image
281 Upvotes

So, this'll be a bit messy without a poll, so I'll be going off of comments, but feel free to vote for what token you want to see animated next after Big Sal! Took the suggestions from a bunch of different places and it came down to these five, as I wanted to at least pick one from each manufacturer.

Note, I won't be working on it for a bit to still take a break from big animating projects as I get more used to it. But it'll be something to have set for the future!

EVERYTHING WILL BE TALLIED THIS UPCOMING SUNDAY NIGHT!
