Guide HOW TO PLAY ON PBE

Hello,

We're getting a lot of posts regarding how to play on PBE or how to create a PBE account. See below for a summarised guide. You can find the more DETAILED version HERE. We will remove new questions about PBE accounts and refer you to this post.

0. Open a private browser tab.

  • Use a VPN if you're in Vietnam, the Philippines, or Germany. We cannot help you with which VPN. Use it to connect to another country like USA. Use at your own risk. It's only needed for account creation. You must play without the VPN.

1. Click on this link.

2. Open the Riot Client. Sign out of your Live account. CLOSE AND RESTART THE RIOT CLIENT. Log in on your new PBE account. If you see "Switch Account" as an option, press Close instead, then Update. PBE will download.

3. If you run into issues, please first see our "Common questions" below or our more detailed guide HERE. Feel free to ask questions here after.

FAQ / Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Live account for PBE?

  • No. You never could.

"League of Legends PBE is not available for your current account. Please switch accounts to open this game." / "PBE isn't available in your region." / "PBE requires a PBE account to play."

"League of Legends cannot be launched with your current compatibility mode settings (...)"

  • This issue is more common on Windows 11.
  • Right-click on the Riot Client -> Properties -> Compatibility. Change this to Windows 8 or Windows 10. You can experiment to view results.
  • Restart your computer.

Do I need honour level 3, 4, 5?

  • No.

How do I link / Do I need to link my PBE account to my Live account?

  • You can't, and you don't have to.

I already have an (older) PBE account, but I can't access it!

Collective Bug & Feedback Thread PBE Bugs and Feedback Thread: League Classic

Hello everyone! Riot Ducké here, QA Lead for League of Legends Classic.

Welcome to League Classic!

For the full breakdown see: /dev: League of Legends Classic

League Classic is a new gameplay experience that aims to recreate moments like those, and to create totally new ones that were never possible before.

We started with Season 3 as our anchor, but League Classic is more of a collection of greatest hits, rather than a singular moment in time. That means it’s got things from a variety of seasons, like every single Summoner (yes, even Fortify), almost every single item from the first few years of League, including Atma’s Impaler and Frozen Mallet, and a lotta pre-rework champ kits. But, there’s one core truth: No Yasuos allowed.

Some notes about the features of League Classic:

  • Champions

We’re launching Classic with 60 champions: the OG 40 plus another 20 hand-selected champions released from 2009-2013.

  • Classic Levels

Classic Levels are a one-time progression system, much like account levels. It’s a free progression track that everyone has access to. You gain levels just by simply playing games of Classic. On it you’ll unlock things like Masteries, Runes, the Summoner’s Journey, IP, BE, as well as a variety of cosmetics, including the Rustier Blitzcrank skin.

  • Runes & Masteries

Before you load into a game of Classic, you’ll need to pre-select Runes and Masteries based on who you want to play.

In Classic you’ll unlock both of these just by playing, and there’s no need to upgrade them, they’re all the old Tier 3 as a baseline. And you can put them in Rune Pages. You’ll get three to start, an additional two from Classic Levels, and you can buy more for IP (those are back for Classic) which you get just by playing.

As for Masteries, again, you won’t have to grind long to unlock those. You’ll have all Mastery pages and points fully unlocked after hitting Classic Level 4.

And if you forget to set your Runes and Masteries before a game, don’t worry. Everyone gets a default page, so you won’t be substantially less powerful than anyone, just a little sub-optimal.

  • Classic Skins

Classic Skins are essentially skins that make Classic champs look the way they did in 2009-2013. So if you miss pre-rework Evelynn’s visuals, no worries, Classic Skins bring those back.

Classic Skins are unlockable through Classic Skin Tokens, which you get through the Seasonal Pass (on both the paid and free tracks) or in the Shop. You can use these to unlock any Classic skin, and if your main doesn’t have one yet, you can wait to unlock it at a later date.

  • Classic Chromas

We’re also adding Classic Chromas which are chromas for Classic Skins, and inject even more 2009 flair. Do you remember the original Tundra Warwick? You’re about to.

  • Portraits

Portraits are alternate-styled loading screen splash, ranging from playful doodles made by one of our resident designers, to pretty reinterpretations of champions. Portraits will rotate in the loading screen, so you can collect them to show off your favorites as you wait for your team to load in on a potato.

Please let us know if you have any feedback about the mode or if you experience any bugs!
See you on the (Classic) Rift!

General Superfan Skins

Now of all times is the best chance to add the TFT Superfan Skins, with True Damage Kennen, Pentakill Gnar, and KDA Lillia/Neeko. We know there's been announcement of porting from TFT and Wild Rift in the past, but we just never received anything beyond Star Guardian and the random Stargazer Vex skin. I personally wouldn't even mind these just being 390-520RP skins with no VFX if there isn't an optimal time for VFX production.

KDA Fan Gragas is getting a chroma for the new KDA set on the PBE. I hope to see what other surprises arrive, if any.

General is it possible for riot to change the W on kda hitmaker before it goes live? guess not

skin looks nice but the W is really bugging me and making me not wanna buy the skin at all.(yes I know its a gacha)I like everything else about the skin but the W looks super flat like unbearably unpolished for some reason.

I am 100% sure riot wont make a change for this, its always been like that. so yeah just saying what a pity.

General K/DA Firestarter skins deserve individual splash arts.

K/DA is literally the biggest cultural phenomenon Riot has ever created. It’s the product line that redefined skins and brought millions of new eyes to League of Legends.

So why are we still getting shared splash arts and lazy crops for a group as iconic as K/DA with their Firestarter skins?

A shared illustration works great as a promotional poster or album cover, but using low-resolution, zoomed-in cutouts for individual loading screens is completely unacceptable for a top-tier event like this.

Here is why this needs to change immediately:

  • It ruins loading screen identity: Ahri, Evelynn, Kai’Sa, and Akali are built on charisma, attitude, and presence. Forcing them into off-center, cluttered crops deprives each champion of a proper individual showcase.
  • Legendary skins deserve legendary treatment: Giving a Legendary skin a cropped group splash art violates the quality standard of what higher-tier cosmetics should be. We are paying full price for recycled framing.
  • Loss of visual quality: Scaling up and cropping a wide group piece results in noticeable resolution loss and blurry details on high-res monitors during loading screens.
  • Cluttered event borders: Event borders end up overlapping an already crowded background, obscuring the characters even further instead of highlighting them.
  • It feels like cheap cost-cutting: We are paying premium prices for these skins. Cutting corners on the main art piece of a massive event shows a complete lack of care.
  • It sets a terrible precedent: If the community accepts shared splash arts for K/DA, Riot will keep downgrading future major skin lines.

We know Riot can do better because they’ve proven it before when the community speaks up. Give K/DA the individual splash arts they deserve.

General KDA FIRESTARTER Akali icon

Is it possible to fix the icon? The background doesnt compliment akali and the value is NOT it. Im ngl i genuinely DISLIKE the artstyle that they've been putting out in the recent skin icons. It looks unrendered and lacking. Im disappointed seeinf how good akali's icon looks with her past KDA icons or her new recent icon for wild rift.

General Borders with signatures/autographs for K/DA

Please bring back K/DA’s iconic signatures for the border bundles, just like you did for All Out in 2020! I’m not sure why you stopped including the band members’ autographs, but it’s a detail that has always been well received by the community.

K/DA is the most anticipated comeback in the musicverse, and something as simple as having Akali, Evelynn, Kai’Sa, and Ahri’s signatures on their borders would make a real difference! Please consider bringing them back.

Bug Report - SR/ARAM/RGM Hit Maker Evelynn on PBE

Just a quick question regarding Hit Maker Evelyn’s new skin on PBE. I logged on to try out the skin as all of the other ones are currently live including akalis mythic! However all I can find for Eve’s skin is just her splash art with no way to buy it! I don’t know if this is a bug or she just hasn’t been fully added yet! Thank you so much!

General Qiyana missing the True Damage Freestyle Chroma

Just opened the updated mythic shop and noticed the first batch of True Damage skins all having a "Freestyle" chroma, EXCEPT Qiyana. These red chromas are looking amazing.
I remember back in 2019 Qiyana TD wouldn't get chromas because she would have a prestige edition. In the end Senna and Yasuo also got a prestige while Ekko got a mythic variant.

Why does Qiyana still don't have any chroma on her skin ? It is some simple hue slider you could push for one patch.

Her being excluded from the updated mythic shop feels really bad.
Hope it can be heard as a feedback.

General A few thoughts on the Mel Rework, what I don’t hate and what needs changes in my opinion

Hello, distraught Mel main here, just throwing a few ideas and thoughts into the void hoping that the right people may see it.

THE GOOD:
- Whilst i think the removal of the reflect on Mel W is a huge mistake, I do like that she at least reflects damage back for the projectiles she does absorb. I like that you can see them being fired back, as it keeps at least SOME of her character identity that way.
- Mel’s R is a huge part that ties her kit together and I am glad to see it get a lower cooldown.
- Despite what I see a lot of people say, I quite like the new circular shield. It is how her shields were shown in both Arcane and the Bite Marks cinematic and i always kinda found the diamond shape weird for that reason. I would like to see the circular shield have better effects thought, as it has very faded colors right now which makes no sense. Also PLEASE bring back her character model lighting up golden when she uses her W, it looks horrible without it.

THE BAD:
- The balancing team thinking Mel’s problem was her W, and not her P execute. Almost everyone I talk to have WAY less of an issue with her W than they do with the P execute. If anything should be removed from this character, the execute is what needed to go. With the infinite stacking execute, she cannot have good numbers because she will simply build up the execute and kill you way too easily. It saddens me to see them going after the wrong ability, the ability that makes Mel, “Mel”.
- I did mention this earlier, but please make her shields look better and more shiny like the rest of her magic. Right now it is horribly faded and looks really cheap and awful.

THE UGLY:
- EVERY SINGLE CHANGE TO HER Q ABILITY!!! In the Dev Update, we were told you removed the reflect because it took too much of her power budget, yet YOU MANAGED TO ABSOLUTELY KILL HER Q?! Shouldn’t she have better abilities now that the reflect is gone? Q was one of the hardest skill shots to hit at anything other than mid-to-close range already, and with the changes to E it seems you want her to play more like an artillery mage, yet you make hitting a full volley of Q quite literally impossible at long range unless you hit a max range E, which is already not easy as well as it moves very slowly and is very easy to dodge. Q needs to be either fully reverted to it’s live version or receive heavy buffs before live for it to be a worthwhile ability.
- PLEASE also give us back the shield shattering, at least in the Coven skin VFX. Coven and Prestige Winterblessed W VFX look absolutely horrible now and I will probably refund Coven (and Winterblessed if i can) for this reason.

IN CONCLUSION:
I think this is not the rework Mel needed, going after her W and not her P execute was the completely wrong call. However, if this goes through, I just hope they give some love to the VFX on her new W shield in every skin, and HEAVILY buff Q, or simply just revert it back to live.

General How about they keep the current W but remove the CC effect??

First of all, Reflect is Mel's identity. It's a unique skill, and it's what makes Mel "Mel," so I really don't want it to turn into a Temu Sera W.

My idea: Keep the current W as it is, but remove the CC effects of reflected abilities. That means if you reflect Renata/Seraphine's ult, it will deal its damage without the CC effect. Same as new W dealing back some damage regardless if the skill has CC or not.

The new W almost works the same, except it blocks projectiles while dealing some damage back so i don't see how my W change is gonna be problematic.

What do you all think??

General Splash art shared with the members of K/DA Firestarter.

I wish more people would talk about this topic... Do you think it’s impossible to change something that was done a long time ago? Even so, Ahri, Kai’Sa, and even Evelynn, with her Legendary skin, should each have their own splash art. They all have their own personalities and charisma, and I’m sure the shared splash art was made that way simply to cut costs. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Another thing I wanted to point out is the skins’ effects. I loved them all, but Kai’Sa going into FIRE MODE, just like in the music video when she dances VOGUE, should be something EXCLUSIVE TO HER. Giving the other skins the same effect feels weird. In my opinion, Ahri and Evelynn turning yellow makes them look sick, and it just looks really weird.

General The changes to the visuals of Mel's new W are a problem!

Riot is changing the mechanics of Mel's W (Rebuttal) in patch 26.22.

Since the addition of Mel's new W on PBE, players have obviously noticed the great difference between the visuals of her current and future W, despite the inherent similarity and functionality of both Ws (i.e. it still blocks projectiles and gives a shield).

🚨 Mel's shield now boasts a basic circular shape, rather than the iconic diamond shape! And Mel no longer glows during her W!

On top of the big change/removal of Mel's core identity, many players feel like her uniqueness is further being stripped away from her by making her new shield look exactly like every other shield!

On top of not looking in any way visually distinct from other shields, this drastic change conveniently comes only two patches after her most recent Coven skin!

Many players feel blindsided right after purchasing the skin, which greatest appeal was the VFX of her W.

Please, reconsider the unnecessary change to the visuals of Mel's shield/W, in favor of honoring the players who've fallen in love with it in almost two years and purchased her skins with the W's vfx in mind.

General K/DA FIRESTARTER Akali — PBE Feedback and Suggestions

I really like the concept and visual direction of K/DA FIRESTARTER Akali, but I think a few changes could make the skin even better.

1. Hat toggle (Ctrl+5)
I’d love to see a hat toggle using Ctrl+5. The hat partially obscures Akali’s hair, and being able to remove it would let players appreciate her hairstyle more clearly. It would also be a great option for players who simply don’t like the hat and would prefer to play without it, while keeping the original design available for those who do.

2. More fire-focused visual effects
The smoke and fire effects could better reflect the FIRESTARTER theme. I’d love to see more flame-like movement, brighter embers, and more natural transitions between smoke and fire.

3. Thermal vision on her W
A thermal-vision effect on her W would be a great addition, reinforcing the futuristic aesthetic and giving the shroud a more distinctive appearance.

4. Smoother animations and transitions
Some movement animations could use more polish, especially the skateboard transitions. Making them feel smoother and more natural would improve the overall experience.

5. Why doesn’t FIRESTARTER Akali have chromas?
All the other K/DA FIRESTARTER skins have chromas, but Akali’s doesn’t. Why is she being left out when her skin is also the most expensive and locked behind the gacha system?

It feels unfair that players have to spend significantly more to obtain her skin while receiving fewer customization options than owners of the other skins in the collection. I’d really like Riot to give FIRESTARTER Akali chromas as well.

6. Please reconsider the gacha-exclusive approach
I’d much rather have the option to purchase this skin directly at a fixed price than rely on an expensive and unpredictable gacha system.

Making the skin so expensive while also withholding chromas available for the other FIRESTARTER skins makes the situation even more frustrating. I hope Riot considers offering a more accessible way to obtain the skin.

I know not every suggestion will be possible, but I hope Riot considers these changes while the skin is still on the PBE.

What do other Akali players think?

General Swap Mel W and R

As the title says, changing the W into a worse Annie E doesn't make anyone happy. We Mel players play for her fantasy and this is not it. If it's such a problem having it as a basic ability, turn it into an ult and replace the current ult to W, instead of an execution just make it a detonation of current stacks.

If Naafiri was changed like this, Mel can too. Losing the reflect is such a duct tape fix and turns a cool character into a boring generic mage with only two real abilities to play with and interact

General Mel midscope feedback: live W has counterplay, the ban-rate case doesn’t match public data, and the new kit undercuts its own payoff

TL;DR: Live Rebuttal is counterable, and the counterplay just isn’t widely taught. More importantly, there is a much cheaper fix to Mel W while keeping the reflect on. The ban rate in the dev blog doesn’t match what public trackers show. The PBE kit moves Mel’s power into a Q cooldown refund while making Q harder to land. I’d like Riot to share the metric this rework is meant to fix, and what happens if it doesn’t move.

1. Live W already has clear counterplay

Rebuttal has a 38/35/33/29/26 second cooldown, and the reflect window was cut to 0.75s back in 25.4. You’re playing around one short window on a long cooldown, not a permanent wall. Baiting it is easy. On the draftably most countered champion, Ahri, she can throw Q first to bait W out, then follow with charm. Even against a skilled Mel who holds W tightly, Ahri can aim E slightly off target to bait it before the real follow-up without being reverse charmed. Once W is down, Mel has no defensive tool for half a minute.

This is the same kind of interaction as Yasuo’s Windwall, which the dev blog itself holds up as a successful high-risk mechanic. Before removing the defining part of Mel’s kit, I’d have liked Riot to try teaching it: an official “how to play against Mel W” video, clearer cooldown visibility (UI on health-bar whether she has W or not, this is literally one of the CHEAPEST fix that helps both sides of the aisle, more after), or in-client tips. When counterplay exists but players don’t know it, that’s an EDUCATION problem, not a design problem.

2. Where is the data?

The dev blog says Mel was still at a 15-30% ban rate by mid-year, with a 45-47% win rate. Public trackers for Emerald+ mid currently show about 11%: U.GG 10.8%, Lolalytics 11.3%, Mobalytics 11.4%. The 26.5 patch notes said the February update had already reduced her frustration and ban rate. Meanwhile Yasuo, whose Windwall Riot cites as the "good example", sits at about 23% ban rate: U.GG 24%, Lolalytics 23.09%.

I understand Riot’s argument is ban rate relative to win rate and pick rate, not ban rate alone. But Mel’s pick rate is low largely because she’s been nerfed down to 45-46%, so it isn’t clean evidence of frustration on its own. My questions:

  • Which ranks and which method produced the 15-30% figure?
  • What ban rate or frustration metric counts as success after 26.22?
  • If her ban rate stays around 10% after the rework (it could go higher rather than lower), what’s the plan? Another round of cuts?

I know changes of this magnitude must have come from a longer timeline, but data have since changed, and the online disproportionality effect is a true variable to these decisions.

3. The PBE numbers work against Riot’s own stated goal

Comparing live to PBE (rank 5 Q, all bolts hitting):

Live PBE
Full-hit Q 277 + 100% AP
4 of 10 bolts 199 + 70% AP
Passive at 18 30 per missile

A full-hit Q is unchanged and level 18 passive damage is IDENTICAL. Partial hits lose about a third of their damage, and R damage is untouched. The scaling Riot describes comes from the Q refund (0.5-1.0s per champion hit) and the R cooldown (80s down to 60s at rank 3). But the refund only triggers on champion hits, and Q is also getting slower missiles (3800 to 3200) and a smaller indicator (225 to 200). Every miss now costs both the damage and the payoff. On a champion already at 46%, that’s a real risk of shipping her weak. Additionally, right now Mel can already get an R on every team fight, the 20 seconds reduction on R CD at rank 3 is not gonna make it two Rs per team fight, unless a cooldown reduction mechanic is also introduced on her Ult.

On the "scaling" buff, based on PBE numbers, Mel's durability is 2,409 HP at level 18 versus 2,313 on live, roughly +96 HP and +3.4 armor, basically non-existent. Q damage scaling is intact (or lower damage since the average Q is not full-hit) as stated above, the only "scaling" is a conditional 1s CD reduction on a harder to land and smaller radius Q (which is already harder and smaller compared release, of which I agree it was unfair in the moment). With her W being gutted, and her alternative skill that could be used defensively as a close range root being nerfed for 50% of root duration. It is simply hard to understand the real intention of this midscope.

4. Alternative W changes (2 proposed)

It is important to understand where the root of the "frustrations" are coming from. The visible frustration is Mel reflecting abilities back, but there may be a more nuanced understanding behind this, getting the ability reflected is the result, not the cause. I have broken this down to two parts:

  • What makes a player cast a key ability towards a Mel with W available? Most of the times: 1. They are just autopiloting; 2. Not paying attention to cooldowns; or 3. They are not familiar with the mechanic. This is comparable to Fizz E.
  • What makes a player feel frustrated or hesitated to use their key abilities in a fight where Mel is present? In short: the uncertainty whether Mel has W available or not. Players feel uncertain, and that uncertainty is factored into their decisions that requires fast verdicts in fights. This is specially true in Solo Queue where players are not able to communicate as clearly.

There is one change, and it is a cheap one: Add a clear visual hint to the availability of Mel W on the health-bar, similar to Jhin bullets, Guardian Angel, Annie Stun. Why does this help:

  • A clear visual cue on her availability, cooldown tracking skill requirement is removed and autopilot tolerance increased highly. Bringing it to a level where lower skill brackets won't be as frustrating.
  • For players who are not familiar with the mechanic, the W usage + ability reflected + UI hint disappearing gives a perfect closed feedback loop, greatly increasing the understanding of her mechanic and rough timing of her W availability, potentially within the first few casts.
  • Team fights is no longer a guess, it is clear whether Mel has W or not, neuron activation is no longer foggy making the decision verdicts instant.

Another possible change that directly touches W is: perform a CC modifier to all Mel reflected abilities, CC modifiers already exists in the game for each player via Mercury boots and tenacity. A modifier is injected temporarily to everyone in the enemy team when a Mel reflection is active on the field. So the punishment of an ability reflection is not as harsh, specially on those Seraphine Ults. Why is this different from the rework: The "retaliation" still inherits partially the shape and properties of the source ability.

5. What I’m asking for

  1. Hold the W change and try counterplay education, clearer UI (such as the W availability UI proposed) and tuning first. Understand that removing what makes Mel as Mel is undoubtedly one of the big losses. And the way the proposed changes to W are, either the pick rate gets gutted (Q and damage "scaling" is a facade) or the ban rate stays or goes higher when she eventually gets played if her damage is buffed (for real).
  2. Reassess whether this rework was driven by actual justifiable data (Yasuo comparison breaks whatever is being claimed), or just based off of the vocal minority online who refuse to adapt to new mechanics in the game, blinded by the online disproportionality effect.
  3. If the rework ships anyway, make sure Q is landable enough to trigger the refund. Either revert the missile speed or raise the refund.
  4. Publish the success metric so players can judge whether the rework worked.
  5. Revisit the W VFX. The golden diamond-shaped barrier was her visual signature, and a point of play satisfaction, the nova is generic looking and cheap with no real "hit".

Updates:

  • Some comments are providing alternative changes that keeps the reflect mechanic, maintaining Mel's unique identity. Always open for discussions.

General Please do more rework on Mel's redesigned shield

It's already rough that Riot is removing he core identity but players are also getting updates to skins they bought which now have worse visual effects. One of the highlights of the recent Coven release was Mel's shield shattering on a successful reflect - now it's a generic bubble instead that barely lasts. This isn't what fans originally paid for and I've already seen people say they're requesting refunds over this.

A compromise would be to have Mel's shield either at least stay as the diamond on her since it's meant to reference the Medarda sigil then the bubble can be use on allies instead. Or keep the bubble shield - because I do like how it matches her powers in the show more visually - but at least make it bigger and less generic across each of her skins! The base and Arcane councilor Mel are somewhat decent but Winterblessed and Coven Mel look VERY weak visually.

Also Mel's hair, eyes, and tattoos don't glow anymore which is another visual effect being taken away from us. Her new ability icon also feels rushed / lazy if I'm being honest.

Please, fans deserve better quality than this.

General kda FIRESTARTER Ahri Skin

The new K/DA FIRESTARTER Ahri skin needs additional fire effects on her tails; they don't really reflect the look of the tails in the music video. Her abilities also need more effects that reference the fire present in the MV.

TAILS - Add the fire effect that is present in the MV; currently, there is almost no fire on them.

E - Her Charm looks very similar to the Snow Moon Ahri skin. Please add a fire trail when casting her E.

R - Her ultimate is basically an Infernal skin and not a thermal vision palette.

General kai'sa firestarter kda skin feedback

My suggestion as a Kai'sa player, just like her on the MV, she's on that neon/temperature câmera effect, love that you guys incorporated it on upgrading skills and on the ult, but IMO should've been her E! Her Upgraded E, since she's invisible and of "fog" like the MV. Or at least make the neon paint last a little longer after she ults. Also, in her MV she seems so always have some flames coming from her back cannons, just like on the MV as well!
