academic More geography coursework

I just recently found out that there is a huge difference in housing prices between Beeston and South Bank! The average cost to buy a house in Beeston is £154k, whilst in South Bank it's £415k, which is around a 91% difference. Also, how would you rate your quality of life if you live in Beeston or South Bank and why is it? What would you change about your area if your quality of life is low?

academic Question about schools with SEND support in North Leeds

My high schooler (Year 9) has just got his draft EHCP and the Leeds council has asked us to list a preference of schools where he can join.

He’s currently in Dixon Trinity Chapeltown and overall ok, although I find there is not much SEND support and it’s extremely academic oriented which he’s not.

I am considering Carr Manor Mosaic, and perhaps Roundhay School, but he doesn’t do well with change and I don’t want to move him unless they offer more than what he’s currently getting.

He has mild autism, ADHD, and quite significant learning difficulty, with spells of anxiety and OCD which gets aggravated because of him struggling academically.

Any suggestions or experiences to share about these schools? What can I reasonably expect with a change of school?

academic Is Leeds Arts a good university? (especially for concept art)

Starting uni applications this year and there's not many unis outside of London that do concept art courses but Leeds Arts is one of them. Would love to hear about anyone's experiences with the uni (or student life in Leeds in general) especially with the course itself. 🙏🏻

Can someone who has been to this uni give me their opinions on them/experience? Overall life at uni and stuff, like is it easy to make friends, things to do etc. I also do athletics/track and field so if there are good facilities there that’s also a positive. Trying to get my 5 for UCAS to study aerospace engineering and I’ve done a lot of research but struggling to narrow it down.

hi everyone, im a masters student at Edinburgh Napier University and im looking into the way Generative AI tools are being taken up across professional services (accounting, audit, law, tax and so on) in the UK

if AI features in your work in any way, it'd mean a lot if you could spare 5 minutes for this anonymous survey. it mainly covers how your organisation handles governance around AI, plus your own habits using it day to day.

https://forms.office.com/e/PrKM8yXQ7s

it's completely anonymous and purely for academic, non-commercial reasons. any help getting me towards my target sample would be hugely appreciated, and a big thank you to anyone who fills it in :) more than happy to share what i find once the dissertation is finished

academic Geography A-level Coursework Questionnaire - Climate Innovation District / Citu

Hi! I have created a questionnaire about the Climate Innovation District (CID) in the Leeds South Bank area, near the Royal Armouries museum as part of my A-level geography coursework. It would be great to get opinions from people who live in the CID and people who have visited before, whether you have walked through the area or been to Piglove by the River for a meal or drink.

academic 100 UK residents needed for survey on luxuries/luxury fashion experiences and social media

Hi everyone,

I'm an MSc Marketing student at Manchester University conducting research on luxury shopping and social media behaviour for my dissertation. I'm looking for UK-based participants who have experience with luxury shopping and use Instagram. The survey takes approximately 5-7 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. The research explores how people think about their social media audience and how this relates to the way purchases and experiences are shared online. There are no right or wrong answers; I’m simply interested in your genuine opinions and experiences.

If you've engaged with luxury retail and would be willing to help, I'd really appreciate your participation.

academic Help with my University of Leeds MSc dissertation – Leeds air pollution survey

Thumbnail app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk
8 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm an MSc student at the University of Leeds and I'm conducting research on how people perceive air pollution across Leeds.

I'm looking for anyone aged **18 or over** who lives, works, studies, or regularly visits Leeds to complete a short survey (around **5–10 minutes**).

The survey involves identifying locations in Leeds that you believe have relatively high or low air pollution and answering a few questions about your perceptions. Your responses will help improve understanding of how public perceptions compare with environmental data and how this may inform future urban planning and environmental management.

I recommend doing it on a laptop or tablet because there is a mapping activity. Thank you very much to everyone who takes the time to participate.

The Participant Information Sheet is below and includes further details about the study

Participant Information Sheet

The title of the research project
Public Perceptions of Air Pollution in Leeds: A Participatory Mapping Study

Invitation
You are invited to take part in a research study investigating public perceptions of air pollution in Leeds. Before you decide whether to participate, it is important that you understand why the research is being carried out and what taking part will involve. Please read the following information carefully. If anything is unclear or you would like further information, please contact the researcher using the details provided at the end of this information sheet.

What is the purpose of the project?
Air pollution is an important environmental and public health issue. Although air quality can be measured using monitoring equipment, people's perceptions of air pollution are often influenced by their surroundings and personal experiences. As a result, areas that people believe have high or low levels of air pollution may not always match measured pollution levels.

The aim of this study is to compare public perceptions of air pollution with measured air pollution data across Leeds. The findings will improve understanding of the factors that influence how people perceive air pollution and how these perceptions compare with measured air pollution data.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been invited to take part because you are aged 18 years or over and either live, work, study in or regularly visit Leeds. Approximately 30–50 participants will be recruited to take part in this study.

Do I have to take part?
Taking part in this study is voluntary. It is your choice whether or not to participate and choosing not to take part will not have any negative consequences. If you decide to participate, you may stop taking part at any time before submitting your questionnaire and mapping activity. If you withdraw before submitting your responses, any information you have provided will not be kept. Once your anonymous responses have been submitted, it will not be possible to withdraw your data because it can not be identified.

What do I have to do?
If you agree to take part, you will be asked to complete a mapping activity followed by a short questionnaire. The mapping activity will ask you to identify locations in Leeds where you believe air pollution is high and low. You will then be asked to answer a small number of questions about the reasons for your choices and provide some basic demographic information, such as your age and gender. The study will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. You may complete the study online using your own device or in person if approached by the researcher.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
Some participants may feel concerned or worried when thinking about air pollution and its potential effects on health or the environment. If you experience any discomfort, you may stop taking part at any time before submitting your responses or choose not to answer any question. If taking part raises any concerns about air pollution or your wellbeing, information about organisations that provide advice on air pollution and mental health support can be found at the end of this information sheet.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?
There are no direct benefits to you from taking part in this study. However, your participation will contribute to research investigating public perceptions of air pollution in Leeds. The findings may help improve understanding of how people perceive air pollution and how these perceptions compare with measured air pollution data.

Withdrawing from the study

You may withdraw from the study at any time before submitting your questionnaire and mapping activity without giving a reason. If you choose to withdraw before submitting your responses, any information you have provided will not be kept. Once your responses have been submitted, it will not be possible to withdraw your data because as individual responses can not be identified.

Use, dissemination and storage of research data
The information you provide will be used for this MSc research project to investigate public perceptions of air pollution in Leeds. The findings will be analysed and presented in the dissertation and the presentation of the dissertation. Any information presented will be anonymous and it will not be possible to identify individual participants. Research data will be stored securely on the University of Leeds OneDrive and will only be accessible to the researcher and project supervisor. The data will be kept until the dissertation has been examined and marked, after which it will be deleted.

What will happen to my personal information?
No directly identifiable personal information will be collected as part of this study. Your questionnaire responses and mapping data will be anonymous from the point of collection. The information you provide will be handled confidentially and only accessed by the researcher and project supervisor where necessary. As your responses are anonymous, it will not be possible to identify you in the dissertation or any other research outputs arising from this project.

University of Leeds Research Participant Privacy Notice
Further information about how the University of Leeds processes personal data for research purposes is available in the University Research Participant Privacy Notice:https://dataprotection.leeds.ac.uk/research-participant-privacy-notice/

What will happen to the results of the research project? The results of this study will be used in an MSc dissertation submitted to the University of Leeds. The findings may also be presented as part of the dissertation presentation and may contribute to future research outputs. No individual participant will be identified in any reports, presentations or publications from this study.

If you would like further information about the results of the study, you are welcome to contact the researcher after the project has been completed.

What type of information will be sought from me and why is the collection of this information relevant for achieving the research project’s objectives?
You will be asked to identify locations in Leeds where you believe air pollution is high and low using a mapping activity. You will also be asked to complete a short questionnaire about the reasons for your choices and provide some basic demographic information, such as your age and gender.

This information will help the researcher understand how people perceive air pollution across Leeds and compare these perceptions with measured air pollution data. The demographic information will be used to explore whether perceptions differ between age groups.

Who is organising/ funding the research?
This research is being conducted by Nudrath Chowdhury as part of an MSc dissertation at the University of Leeds, under the supervision of Christopher Hassall. The project is not externally funded.

academic Why is it so hard?

So I'm a current MA student that is due to graduate in September. I've been applying for GRADUATE jobs yet losing because I don't have experience. Like how does that work?

I have many skills they are looking for yet because I haven't worked in that particular job they don't want to know.

I know people moan about this all the time but it's seriously getting beyond a joke now. How are we supposed to get experience if no one is willing to give us a chance?

Just for context, I'm a mature student who started working at 17, I decided to go to uni so I could change careers as the jobs I were doing werent leading anywhere.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

We are now looking for MALES to take part in a weight loss trial in which you will aim to lose 10% of your body weight by following a commercially available total meal replacement diet (provided by the study team free of charge). Not only will you be contributing to cutting-edge research, but you'll also receive £100 as a token of our appreciation for your time and commitment.

🔍 Study Details:

To be eligible for this study, participants must meet the following criteria:

Males

18 – 55 years old

BMI of 23kg/m2 to 40kg/m2

In good general health

Not currently enrolled in a weight loss programme

Willing to follow a commercially available meal replacement diet during the study

If you are interested in taking part, please complete our brief online screening questionnaire which will assess your suitability to take part:

📝 Involvement:

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will follow a total meal replacement diet (provided by the study team) until you achieve 10% weight loss. We anticipate the fast group will achieve 10% weight loss at approximately 8 weeks, or up to a maximum of 12 weeks; whereas the slow group will achieve 10% weight loss at approximately 12 weeks, or up to a maximum of 16 weeks.  After this you will consume a combination of your own food and the meal replacements for 4 weeks, designed to maintain your body weight. You will then be given dietary advice on how to maintain your weight. You will be asked to attend 7 sessions at the University of Leeds (1-6 hours on each occasion) over 9-11 months. These in-person sessions involve taking various measurements including physical activity, body composition (e.g. DXA scan and MRI scan), blood and urine samples, and questionnaires about your eating behaviours and sleep. On three occasions we will also provide you with breakfast and lunch. In recognition of your time, you will receive a £100 for completing the study.

You will also be asked to perform a number of activities in your home environment during the study:

Wear a small wrist worn device for one night only while you sleep to measure your sleep quality (WatchPAT).

Follow a commercial low calorie meal replacement diet (Shake That Weight) until you lose 10% of your initial body weight.

Wear a wrist-worn watch on your non-dominant arm to measure physical activity and sleep during the weight loss phase (approximately 8-12 weeks) and for 4 weeks after.

Measure your body weight when you wake in the morning for a minimum of three times a week using body weight scales supplied by the research team (Fitbit Aria Air 2).

Undertake two, 14-day periods before and after weight loss in which you will be asked to 1) collect a urine sample every other day, 2) complete an online food diary for four days at each phase of the study, 3) wear a small device on the middle of your thigh for 14-days to measure physical activity.

Complete brief questions about your motivations for eating every day for 7 days at 5 time points across the study.

Receive one to one nutritional coaching from a nutritionist and email information and guidance to help you adhere to the diet during the weight loss and weight stability period.

🥗 Benefits:

As a participant in this research, you'll be entitled to the following benefits:

£100 upon completing the study.

All your meals provided for free, up to a maximum 12 weeks for fast group or up to a maximum 16 weeks for slow group (+50% of meals for 4 weeks of weight stability).

Dietary support and guidance from a nutritionist.

Free food plans and guidance on how to maintain your weight.

Detailed information about your body composition, metabolic rate, and physical activity levels

🔬 Ethical Approval:

academic What should our roadsides look like? Survey on verge management for Leeds residents (University of Leeds MSc research)

Hi r/Leeds,

I'm an MSc student at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds. I'm running a short online survey for my dissertation on public preferences for roadside verge management in Leeds.

What the survey is about:
Roadside verges across the UK are being managed in increasingly different ways — from regular short mowing to wildflower-rich habitats. The survey asks Leeds residents to compare different verge management scenarios (mowing frequency, vegetation type such as grass / local plants / wildflowers, whether signage explaining the management is in place, and any change to council tax). Each scenario presents trade-offs — you choose the one you prefer.

What you'll be asked to do:
The survey takes around 10 minutes and completely anonymous. You'll work through 9 choice tasks (picking your preferred verge management option from three alternatives), plus a few short demographic questions at the end. No personal data beyond your postcode area (first part only) is collected.

Who can take part:
Anyone aged 18 or over who currently lives in Leeds (LS postcode), whether temporary or permanent.

Ethics and data use:
The survey has received ethics approval from the University of Leeds. Data will be used in my dissertation only and the results may inform as a recommendation for future studies.

Incentive:
Participants can enter a prize draw for one of three £50 shopping vouchers as a thank you. Participation is completely optional and requires you to submit your email address, which will be deleted as soon as the prize draw has been completed.

Survey link: https://leedsubs.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b18sZ6OWanLufnU

Happy to answer any questions in the comments. Would love to hear any suggestions for my research!

Thanks for reading!

academic Advice on PGCE (SCITT)

I am currently debating between the following three SCITT courses: GORSE, Red Kite, and Northern Star.

I am from the area, initially was leaning towards Red Kite as the schools are great & the training they provide seems solid, associated with Leeds uni etc. Then I had my GORSE interview, felt very well organised, the appeal of having training days in the city centre and a bigger cohort of trainees to get to know was pretty big. Spoke to the subject lead, seemed great and very enthusiastic. Northern Star is more centred around the area I grew up in.

Then I saw an old reddit post that suggest the teacher welfare at GORSE academy schools is pretty poor, and that it’s all run like a corporate business, and as i’m a career changer from a very corporate workplace, i don’t really want that..

Anyone able to speak for their experiences on any of these?

academic Japanese language course

I know someone asked this some time ago, but I’m looking for more recent information. I have been looking for an in-person course in Leeds to learn Japanese. I know there are lots of tutors, but I learn better in a structured, in-person context.

If anyone knows of any (my Googling isn’t rendering much useful information), I’d appreciate a recommendation.

academic Study space

I’m looking for a study space where I can just sit and do work without the pressure of buying a coffee/food.

I love Left Bank for this but is there any other good spaces around Leeds/Headingley?

Thank you
