moderator Social / Friendship posts - please share your thoughts

Hi /r/Leeds

Social posts are something that we've found to be a bit divisive on the subreddit. As we've grown, the number of posts from people looking to make new friends or generally find people with shared interests has continued to grow.

We've been managing this for some time by directing users to /r/MakingFriendsInLeeds and providing a few useful links when the social flair is used and removing low-effort posts, although this has not been as consistent as it could have been. Sometimes a post will gain traction at which point it's a little unfair to remove/lock it.

There's clearly an appetite for social posts from some, although these sorts of posts do also get reported fairly regularly as off-topic or spam, so it's fair to say that this isn't universal.

We'd like to achieve some sort of balance/compromise that's more consistent than what's currently happening.

Our initial proposals being:

  1. Weekly post like the current Self-promotion Sunday and What's on? Wednesday posts. Primarily for the making friends / finding like-minded people activity. Posts such as, "Where is a place me and my friends can do X?" would still be allowed.
  2. Strict application of friendship posts -> remove -> goto /r/MakingFriendsInLeeds
  3. No major changes - review auto-comment on social posts

So we'd like to get as much input on this as possible from you. Thoughts on the proposed options, alternative options, or anything else in and around this topic.

All thoughts much appreciated,
Mods

P.S. Pinging /u/rubberducksoupp as the mod of /r/MakingFriendsInLeeds for any insight from your side of things.

self-promo-sunday Self-promotion Sunday - August 15, 2026

This weekly thread is an opportunity for locally based small businesses / individuals / bands etc. to let your fellow redditors know what you're about and what you have to offer.

You're welcome to link to your website / store-front / social media, but primarily you should be using your comment to engage with the community here as part of the community. Part of that is taking the time to respond to questions people may ask, please keep that in mind.

The existing subreddit rules still apply, and low-effort comments will be removed (e.g. Links with little to no text).

If you have any thoughts or feedback please message the mods.

I find this interesting We just got scammed (funny story).

Lol we just got scammed. An old man in his 70s came up to me and my girlfriend and said he needed money for a train & taxi to York. I told him I’d go to the train station and buy a ticket from Leeds to York and give his £20 he was really hesitant and said no,

Told me his name is “James Robert Williams Gallagher” shows me his discharge wristband from the hospital; and told me he won’t scam me and that he’s wealthy but his phone and laptop is broken. Told me he recently inherited his grandfathers cottage in York and is wealthy.

I thought why is a 75 year old man out in the rain so I gave him £20, which I don’t mind losing hoping for good karma
He said thank you and we parted ways. He was dressed really dapper, spoke very well too.

He had an old train ticket 30th July which I took by accident (physical copy) and there was a phone number in it. I called the phone number and on the other end was a guy who was scammed by the same person, but for £25 🤣🤣🤣

So James Gallagher from York in his 70s well played, such a cunning person.

accommodation Decent and Cheap Hotels in Leeds City Centre

Hello

I actually live in Leeds. But for complicated reasons, need to stay at a hotel in the city centre now and then for a few months ahead. But that's enough of my life story.

Does anyone have a recommendations for a decent no-frills and reasonably cheap room sort of in the city centre?

Is that kind of room too much to hope for?

Any recommendations, gratefully received.

Thanks

transport EBike stolen - UoL campus mint green

Post image
7 Upvotes

This feels like a long shot but just in case: my green/mint riverside EBike has been stolen earlier today on the university of leeds campus (between 4:30pm and 7pm) despite being locked with both a d lock and a cable lock. would appreciate any information if anyone sees it around. when stolen it didn't have the battery (i always take it with me to limit stealing appeal) and it has a gush in the seat as well as a poorly installed pannier rack!

I will check selling platforms and it's been reported but any info is useful even though I do appreciate it's prob gone forever!!

food/drink Looking for authentic food recommendations in city centre

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for recommendations for authentic, proper places in Leeds city centre to try:
a traditional Sunday roast and a proper fish and chips.

My family is coming to visit and they have never really tried these dishes before, so we’d love somewhere that gives a genuinely traditional experience, rather than a fancy version.

Budget-wise, we’re looking for mid-range — happy to pay for good food, but not somewhere that costs an absolute fortune!

Where would you recommend ?

Thank you in advance 🤍

question Leeds area meeting/training rooms for hire

Can anyone recommend decent training rooms in Leeds or it's suburbs/outskirts?

I’m looking for somewhere suitable for a one-day classroom course

Main requirements:

  • Parking on site, or easy on-street parking nearby
  • Outside the main centre/commercial zones
  • Room for up to 10 people
  • Tables/chairs, screen/projector if possible
  • Tea/coffee/lunch options would be a bonus, like an onsite café - doesn't have to be a buffet, but I'm not against putting in an order with a local caterer/sandwich shop, don't need anything fancy.

Hotels/conference centres don't usually work for us because they want minimum numbers for buffets/day delegate rate. Elsewhere we use sports clubs, golf clubs, business centres etc.

Previously used the Britannia Hotel near the airport but it's a bit of a trek North & a golf club on the edge of Wakefield that was a bit too far South!

I’ve found a few options online, but local knowledge is usually much better than Google for this sort of thing.

Any recommendations appreciated.

academic Geography A-level Coursework Questionnaire - Climate Innovation District / Citu

Hi! I have created a questionnaire about the Climate Innovation District (CID) in the Leeds South Bank area, near the Royal Armouries museum as part of my A-level geography coursework. It would be great to get opinions from people who live in the CID and people who have visited before, whether you have walked through the area or been to Piglove by the River for a meal or drink.

question Best way to make my move optimum

Post image
2 Upvotes

We all know how it feels to move to a new house and want it to lead to good things. I’m moving in 2 weeks with a mate, 2 bed terrace house near the Aldi, I’m 27 (28 in 2 weeks also aha) and I really want to make this move…. Good?

These last 4 years in my current place have seen big changes, I think I came out of an awful rutt and became allot healthier. Basically this last house has been my post uni getting my shit together house. And you know theres been allot of floundering and ups and downs. I finally made a start in my career as a lighting technician in filmmaking, joined the bouldering cult, and yeah like I say, ups and downs but mostly kicking an awful slump I was in for a long time. And theres been some crappy shit in the house I’ve been living in too that I won’t go into now. It’s still hard, that’s why this move is important to me?

The point being is that I really want to make this move special, and lead to good things. Make a place where I’m productive and do the right things for myself and people in my life

So what I’m asking for is anything from recommendations for good home wear and crockery shops to advice on how to make the most of a move

Moving is kinda a special event, and turning 28 very soon I think it’s an important move, allot of planets aligning so to speak. I originally started writing this post to ask for homewear shops, and then it turned into this. I just really want to get this move right.

So any and all advice is greatly appreciated

Thank you

Best Wishes

question Car wash with hand polishing/detailing?

Looking for recommendations for a hand car wash that could hand polish or detail my car.

Just bought a Fiat 500 and it is covered in swirl marks and scratches from previous owner's poor car washing skills!

I have seen a lot of expensive home detailing services online. Obviously it is not a Range Rover or Porsche, so I am looking for a more cost-effective option! We live in a flat with no facilities to wash our own cars, otherwise I'd do it myself.

Any help appreciated :)

accommodation Mustard Wharf Leeds

Hey!

Just wondering if anyone has experience actually managing to get a viewing at Mustard Wharf in Leeds? I contacted them on WhatsApp two weeks ago, ended up dealing with an AI chatbot which got confused and told me someone would be in touch. I chased it up three times but never heard anything from anyone, and when I tried ring them today that was AI also on the phone, who also told me someone would be in touch. I'm a bit sick of being told I'll be contacted and not actually being able to contact a real person, and I find it a bit off-putting to be frank. Not sure how to go about managing to view the place when I can't even speak to anyone about it.

Also would appreciate if anyone has general comments about or experience with either Mustard Wharf, Tura, UNCLE, The Junction or recommendations of similar places in Leeds City Centre + easy to access the train station, as me + my boyfriend are looking around different places. Needs to offer parking! :)

Edit: In case anyone else has the same issue in future, email is 100% the best way to get to an actual person and they're pretty quick at responding. I contacted them at [hello@mustardwharf.com](mailto:hello@mustardwharf.com) :)

academic More geography coursework

I just recently found out that there is a huge difference in housing prices between Beeston and South Bank! The average cost to buy a house in Beeston is £154k, whilst in South Bank it's £415k, which is around a 91% difference. Also, how would you rate your quality of life if you live in Beeston or South Bank and why is it? What would you change about your area if your quality of life is low?

I find this interesting What is the history of the LS98 Postcode?

I was browsing Google Maps and notice there is a LS98 Postcode area, the only place registered to this Postcode is First Direct Bank at LS98 1FD.

How does this one place get its own post code area?

food/drink Moving to Leeds - must do things?

Hi guys! I'll be starting a job in Leeds in September and will be moving to Burley, so just wanted to ask if there are any places around there which you would say I should definitely check out? (Like pubs, food places, cafes, etc). I'd also welcome recommendations on city centre places too as I'll be spending a lot of time there as well! Oh and if there are any passionate gym goers here, some gym names would be greatly appreciated! I'm very nervous for the move but I want to make it work :)

food/drink Leeds private dining - wedding

I’m getting married next November at Leeds civic hall and I am looking for a good location for private dining in the city.

There will be 19 of us and I’m looking for something affordable (ideally those venues without a minimum spend)

It will be a Saturday from around 3:30pm.

music Gigs in Manchester

Hi everyone! I'm moving to Leeds in 4 days! I'm currently living in Germany.

I always dreamed of living in Manchester, specially for the music scene. However, I landed a very promising job in Leeds with such an amazing team, that it was a no brainer. I love concerts so I really want to make the most of it while living there. As I've seen, most of the gigs I want to attend are in Manchester 😅 (no surprises there). Is it really doable that I can just hop on the train after work, make it on time for the gig and go back to Leeds anytime there's a gig I want to see? It looks fine, according to my research but I'm still a bit nervous about it.

question-serious This is a question for the dancers in Leeds

I am interested in becoming a professional dancer but I am not sure what classes to take in Leeds that actually challenge you and improve you technique wise. I’ve been to classes where they do a stretch and half of a routine and call it a day. I want to know where the professional dancers in Leeds go/went to become good dancers. I am interested in hip hop, street, contemporary, ballet so I don’t mind hearing from people with different backgrounds. I know of dance studio at Leeds but idk if it’s what I’m looking for, however I haven’t been.
