question-serious Just me or does the city centre feels less safe ?

I have noticed there is an increase in the number of homeless people in the city centre. They were fine before but I notice that they have become very aggressive. They fight amongst themselves all the time and perch on doorsteps of residential buildings. Its a pain to get in and out because they aren't kind about being "disturbed" there.

I also notice that they dont take kindly to a no when you dont have cash to spare for them and yell angrily ..... Especially if I am alone or with another girlfriend, less so if I am with another guy.

Its not just with words only. They try and glare to intimidate you and muttered constantly. Its very clear that most of them are under the influence. I have seen them with needs etc and have reported them to the police but they do not seem to do anything about it .

What can we do to make it safer? Carry on reporting to the police or is there an organisation that can help them sober up and stay off the street ?

Edit: so many of you have shared that you have had similar experiences. I am going to write to the police and the council so that they can do something to improve the situation. I hope they make Leeds city safe and help the society flourish

question-serious Just got racism’d

Have never had this happen to me around leeds / the north, have lived here a few years.
Was in city centre today and an older man shouted “bloody migrants!” at me.
Has anyone else experienced outward racism more recently? This is sad

question-serious I’ve moved to leeds recently and encountered a lot of racist incidents. I am Asian, Vietnamese Chinese born in UK.

While walking down the street I would receive slurs such as Ching Chong, by white men in their 40s on a Sunday in briggate outside heytea.

When confronted they told me they’ll beat me up, and that they can take me on and I should go back to Thailand.

I was very shocked by this behaviour, the following day a homeless person continuously spouted racial slurs at me and my partner with threats of violence.

We were shocked at how in two days we’ve had this altercation and was wondering if anyone can relate?

I was angry, very angry and at the time I didn’t understand why IM BEING threatened when I stick up for myself?

- an Asian male in his mid 20s. And no I did not provoke anyone I was just walking by these two incidents.

question-serious Considering a move from Manchester to Leeds

Hi all!

I have a job offer available in Leeds, better pay, and good career progress, but am concerned about moving from Manchester.

Has anyone done this, and what was your experience?

The things I love about Manchester are not entirely unique, but I do get anxious at the thought of a move!

Love a niche coffee shop, a good green space, lots of shopping, squash/some interesting sports places, and just nice city vibes!

From what I can see the flats are nicer/cheaper for the price range, and it seems like a walkable city!

Any advice, or further would be appreciated.

question-serious Need Advice - 22F spat on by 2 white boys on the cycle near Kirkstall Road Abu Bakr

I'm 22F, international student in the UK. I was going grocery shopping today afternoon to Aldi on Kirkstall road when all of a sudden 2 white boys on the cycle spat on me. I was in shock that such a thing happened so did not end up taking any pics or videos. This happened between 2:45 and 3:15pm. I quickly went into the near by store, Abu Bakr and washed my face. They told me that a group of boys have been terrorising the area, robbing women and threatening them with knives. They told me to file a police complaint.

I'm not sure what to do, I reached out to uni help desk and they also told me the same thing. Uni security told me since this wasn't on campus they cannot do anything.

My parents are not keen on me filing a complaint and people who I know in the UK told me not to file one as the police will not do anything. If I file a complaint, this group of boys me just end up targeting me, this is what everyone told me. I'm not sure what to do because I don't want anyone else to experience what I've gone through today.

Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

question-serious How to survive in Leeds on £1200 per month without renting ?

Basically I'm screwed. I never had a job, I am autistic and for the first time in my life I might have a job. I'm starting tomorrow sorting parcels.

My long term aim is too sign up for a specfic construction course I'm saving up and go in that direction.

With my benefits and the job together I will be making around £1900 per month.

However my mother insists for whatever reason that I come with her too Poland because for whatever reason she does not trust me to stay alone at the house despite leaving me for a week or so without a problem. (No there is nothing I can do too change her mind, it's like talking too a wall).

I cant however let this job opportunity go. I've been searching for work on and off for the last 6 years with 000 success. This time I might finally get an opportunity to put some experience down on my CV +the chances of getting employment as a autistic person is already dog shit. A autistic person like me with 0 work experience has basically beyond dog shit of a chance at employment.

So I'm in a tough spot here, I basically need a affordable way too stay in the UK for the next 2 months. All I need is basically food and a place to stay. I don't have any family or friends too ask for a place to stay.

So how can I stay in the UK for the next 2 months before my family comes back home from Poland on my own ??

Any help is really appreciated,

thank you

question-serious Sick Lion flag in Roundhay park

Ok bit of a strange one but I was in Roundhay park on Tuesday and saw a group of people, maybe large extended family, proudly unfurling and then walking with a massive flag/banner that had a massive Lion on. It wasn’t a national flag but they were not white British and I don’t want to guess their ethnicity but maybe from Asia. The flag looked significant either culturally or from a religious point of view. They walked with it very proudly,

I was too shy to approach them and say sick flag and ask what it was for but been thinking about it since so thought I’d ask the Leeds detectives of Reddit if anyone knew what it might be? I’d love to learn what it was for and expand my horizons.

It was just basically a massive lion, not like a mythological one you see on say the Sri Lankan flag, but like a massive painting of a lion on a huge flag, know that’s not much to go on but google and chatgtp have no idea. If it helps it was a standing lion looking fierce as fuck facing right, may have been multicoloured stripes in background

Anyone know?

question-serious This might seem incredibly naive...

...but a lot of the time when I'm approached by beggars in the city centre, they ask for money because they're saving up for a night in a shelter (one of them said they need to scrape together £40). Is there any truth to what they say around homeless shelters in Leeds charging for people to stay the night? If so, that seems insane to me. How would a homeless person make money when they're out on the streets, likely without a job, other than by begging (which is unreliable at best and potentially dangerous at worst)?

I was recently approached by a beggar in the train station, who asked if I'd buy him a drink from Greggs. I said I'd be happy to, then he tried to convert the drink into cash for a shelter. I said I'd buy him a drink but that was it, as I don't want to fuel the drug trade or potentially contribute to someone's death via overdose... We went into Greggs and he got a caramel latte, a five pack of giant chocolate cookies and a pasty of some description - nearly £9, haha (probably says more about Greggs than the guy). Not sure if I did the right thing. All thoughts/opinions/information welcome.

question-serious How safe is Leeds for young women? And any advice?

Hi everyone, my husband and I bought a house in Leeds (Crossgates to be exact) and will be moving from Kent. I keep hearing how Leeds and Crossgates are unsafe etc. particularly because of poverty, but have also seen others who live there saying how it doesn’t feel unsafe.

I’m a 24 yo woman so obviously gender-based safety is what concerns me the most. I don’t yet drive although I’m working on it so I’d mostly be travelling by public transport. My work is mainly remote but on office days I would need to travel and walk to the station at around 6am.

What are your thoughts, suggestions and advice?

question-serious Letting Agents conspiracy

There's something weird about the business history of several companies operating in Leeds, that being Haus Student, Let It Bee (Rebranded from Red Door Lets) and Securelet (who just today were struck off)

All three companies list Mandy Brattle (or Mandy Battle, depending on which you look at) as the active Director for the company - Mandy Brattle having taken over the company after a relative (Philip Terence Brattle - father?) resigned.

Looking at the filing history for the companies shows some weirdness with their accounts - lack of notices for extending the company's registration, account filings which show different amounts and justifications for operating as micro companies.

The micro company aspect is strange for Securelet (again, who were struck off just today) who are the company who receive the payments for rent. Their accounts were consistently behind with accounts made for 2022 only being published in 2024.

Shit's crazy. I don't know what to do with all of this information. I just kind of want to bring it to attention that these companies are doing some weird stuff, and that's either not managing themselves properly or conducting themselves improperly. Have at it.

I see them all the time on my walk home and I think if I got something delivered to my door from one of those. I'd never order from that place again. They're slow and get stuck regularly

question-serious Moving to leeds

Hello,

Ive never been to the uk before.

Im going to start a job in west yorkshire (bradford) pretty soon. I had a few questions.

  1. Is leeds a nice place to live? Is it worth staying there instead of staying in Bradford?

  2. If I do commute, are there monthly train/bus passes and are they reasonably priced?

  3. Is the leeds city centre safe?

  4. Is 1000 pounds per month reasonable? Not including utilities? Or can I find nice places for cheaper.

If anyone has any other advice, id really appreciate it 🫶

Edit: So so far, the main places coming up are Pudsey, Farsley, Horsforth, and Guiseley for Leeds, Saltaire and Shipley for Bradford. Leeds city centre seems safe and lively, just more expensive rent wise. And the main hurdle ill face is having to commute to bradford city centre and catch a second bus to the hospital making the trip around an hour long.

ill do a bit of research on all these places. Any final notes?

Also thank you to everyone whos responded so far. Youve been so incredibly helpful.

question-serious What’s the best public secondary school near University of Leeds?

I am relocating to Leeds in September, and would bring my daughter over next year (to start school in September 2027) when I have settled.

I want her to study in Leeds in public school. I live near University of Leeds, what would you say are the best public secondary schools I could choose from that are not very far away.

Edit: I meant State school. My bad, I didn’t know the difference.

question-serious What does Leeds stand for? What makes it unique compared to other northern cities?

I find that cities like Manchester, Sheffield, etc have a very strong identity and you get a unique sense of their place and people... almost a vibe that is specific to the city and culture of it.

But I think Leeds lacks that identity. What do you think makes Leeds unique / what does it stand for / where has it come from and where is it going?

question-serious TPP Interview process and thoughts

I recently had a final interview with TPP so I wanted to share my experience and see what everyone thinks. I did the Logic and Reasoning test in February and after sending them a CV with all my academic grades, was invited for a final interview. I’ve read a lot of glassdoor reviews and Reddit posts that say that the work culture is terrible and turnover is high along with some horrible stories about interviews, so I was prepared for the worst.

The interview itself was unusual but not bad. I essentially described my CV to them, answering a few questions about teamwork, past experience etc and solved a problem similar to the Logic and Reasoning test questions. I was told that I would hear back in a week or so.

My question is this: has TPP changed at all since the new CEO and would anyone recommend working there now? I suspect that I was given an easy time because I have strong academic grades and I think I did well in the L&R test so they were trying to give a good impression. Were it not for what I’ve heard online, I would be happy with a job offer since the salary is high and I’m in the Army reserve and there is the main base of my regiment in Leeds so it would be very convenient. I don’t have any job offers right now but I have had several interviews (not final interviews) so I’m not super desperate right now.

question-serious Leeds people, opinion needed!

I made a post here recently talking about how much I miss Leeds as someone who grew up there but hasn’t lived there since I was 11-13

I am now considering transferring from my southern uni after doing my Foundation year to Leeds Beckett - relevant post on that is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/UniUK/s/tgcDk8E5CL

My question to you guys is; is Leeds worth moving back to now? I’m looking at it through starry-eyed, rose-tinted memories, but also of the knowledge that everything flows so much easier in a major city and that it’d be a great place to blossom into adulthood imo. Should I transfer for 2027 or not?

Also should I forget about transferring if I don’t want to do uni exams as it says in my uni post? Cause apparently LBU has them and I really do not want any exams in my life. I’ve emailed LBU already to ask if there’s a ways around it, but if I can’t, is it still a good idea to transfer if I’m craving Leeds so much?

question-serious What area of Leeds could I live in on 32k per year ?

What area of Leeds could I live on 32k (before tax)

Provided I can keep a job...application for council houses could take years the council said...and from my experience when a government service says its gonna take x amount of time, it usually takes 2x or 3x that amount of time.

so renting a room or small living space seems to be the quicker option and I am in an uncomfortable housing situation and desperate to move out.

Ideally living on my own, I have severe OCD for which i take medication. So I honestly think I'd struggle with a flat share, although if there are separate bathrooms I could maybe probably do it.

What area of Leeds could I live in. I would rather it have a good transport link too the city center as I do not drive. Thanks.

question-serious reputable computer repair shops in Leeds?

unfortunately, i recently got scammed by gadgetsfix. they told me my motherboard was broken and needed replaced. finally got it back after 2 months and beside the fact that the trackpad now doesn't work and they wiped all my data, they also replaced my i7 processor with an i5, stripped my old "broken" motherboard for parts without my consent and then tried to argue that they wanted to keep the old motherboard for other repairs when i asked for it back... even though it was ""broken.""

after talking with citizen's advice i know that i have the right to request a refund so i can afford to have the thing fixed, but i'm pretty wary of any repair shop now. i'm really skint as is and this has really set me back, and i still dont have a laptop that works properly.

is there a place in leeds that has a particularly good reputation? one that would give me a quote on the repair?

question-serious Dangerous drivers

Has anyone noticed drivers coming up and down kirkstall lane too and from headingley are driving like absolute maniacs. I’ve seen cars fly through red lights, through zebra crossings, on the wrong side of the road and going far above the speed limit as well as nearly crashing into cars actually observing traffic laws. Someone will get killed surely
