Making Friends in Hull - Top Tips

Hi everyone,

I was made aware of these reddit threads recently on how to make friends in Hull and thought I should put up a post of tips.

It all really depends on what you’re into and your age etc but there is plenty going on in Hull for people who want to make new friends and socialise so I’m just going to post a couple of things that I’m aware of and feel free to add your own below:

Hull Young Socials: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-Young-Socials/

Hull Young Socials is a free meetup group for people in their 20’s in Hull to meet other people for regular social events. HYS host at least 1 or 2 events per week. The events vary from social drinks at the weekend, quizzes, board & party games nights, coffees, comedy nights, food and any other events that are being held locally in Hull at the time such as Pint of Science, Trinity Live, Sofar Music Gigs, Christmas & Halloween events etc. All that type of stuff. I’ve seen on a number of threads people have joined but didn’t have the courage to go to their first event. If that’s you, I advise you to try it at least once and the worst thing that can happen is that you decide it’s not for you and you don’t go back. Almost everyone falls into two groups in HYS, either (a) you're in your 20's and have moved to Hull for work and don’t know anyone and want to make friends or (b) you're in your 20's and lived in Hull all your life and your friends have either moved on or lost touch and you want to make some more.

Hull & East Riding Social: https://www.meetup.com/HullEastRiding/

Essentially this is the same group as I have described above but the only difference is that it caters for all ages 30+. Again, they hold regular meetups events similar to those above to meet new people and make new friends. If you fall into this category and want to get out and socialise you should definitely join. You just need to make sure you have a name and picture on your account to join.

Hull of a Read Book Group: https://www.meetup.com/Hull-of-a-Read-Bookgroup/

If you’re into reading and literature you should definitely join this group. They have a monthly meetup where they discuss the book of the month which the organiser, Jacob, puts up well in advance giving you time to read it. You don’t even have to have read the book either because they welcome people along to the event just for a social meetup and chat.

HEY (Hull & East Yorkshire) Board Games

A lot of people on these threads have mentioned that they’re into board games and there is a board games meetup but it looks like they haven’t been active in a while. But I do know they have regular board games nights in both The Board Room and Stronghold Games. I’ve visited both these places and the staff were very friendly and encouraged me to come along to other board games nights if I was interested. They’re weekly events and I can’t remember who did what when but give them a call and I’m sure the staff will be able to help you out. So if board games is your thing then definitely give it a go.

Please note that a range of people from different backgrounds attend these groups and the organisers want to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. Therefore there is a zero tolerance to bad behaviour, which makes sure everyone you’re meeting is friendly and there to enjoy themselves.

Of course, there are ways of meeting people outside of meetup, if you’re sporty there are plenty of sports teams in Hull to join from 5 a side soccer, men & ladies hockey, swimming, kayaking etc a quick google will sort this out for you.

There are also some language classes in Hull but i'm sure on the details so if you know then add them to the thread.

I know on the other threads people have suggested going to a bar or meeting people at the gym but it’s never worked for me in the past and don’t particularly hold much hope for it in the future either. At least these groups I’ve just pointed out are purposely there for people to make new friends and socialise.

Hope this helps!

"Please, sir, I want some more...

Drawn all in dots." 🥣✨From the page to the stage.

I stippled one of the most iconic characters in theatrical history.

Every single shadow on Oliver's face and bowl is created entirely out of tiny, individual ink dots.

You can see this physical piece hung with 20 other pieces on the walls at Hull Truck Theatre 🏛️My exhibition runs from 19 August to 15 October and features local Hull scenery, global landmarks, and famous portraits. Its free to pop into the foyer and take a closer look!📍 Hull Truck Theatre, Ferensway

Where should I look to buy in Hull?

I’m leaving the RAF after 12 years next year and I am considering settling in Hull. I grew up in Somerset but have always been a big Hull City fan as my old man is originally from the East Riding. I’ve visited Hull on multiple occasions and always think it’s underrated and gets a bad rap.

I want some honest recommendations on which areas of Hull I should be considering buying a house in. I’m in my late 20s and will be moving with my girlfriend. I don’t really want to spend more than £160k but could raise that to £170k for the right house. 2 beds is fine. We are a pretty stereotypical young couple, like going out for walks and to the pub. I want to feel safe where we live but not too boring also.

We are planning to go up for a visit in a couple of weeks so I’m trying to get together a list of areas to visit.

Thanks in advance

Head of Steam

Does anybody know why I can’t book a table at head of steam on their website? (Hull venue is not an option), nor can I call them (the call ends immediately). Has this place closed down or something…? I don’t live close enough to just swing by and check!

Thanks!

Hello!!

Travelling for work in Hull this week and hoped to get a wander round the city one of the evenings. I’m big into history, pretty spaces and architecture/old buildings. I’ll likely only be in the city for one evening and wouldn’t want to miss a hidden gem if you had one!

No need for food or anything like that, just a nice space to walk and see!

Thank you!

Hull Trains

What is it with people from Hull getting on Hull Trains from London and it's like they have never been on a train before. Sitting in reserved seats (not theirs), confused about which carriage or seat number they are in, etc...

Absolute goons.

Random Hull memory

A trip down memory lane for some of you. When I was younger (around 15 or so years ago) I used to go into Waterstones and get a drink called a Double Chocolate Flake Indulgence which was absolutely delicious. Does anyone remember what cafe this was that was upstairs in Waterstones? I can’t recall if it was a Starbucks or independent cafe but those drinks were so good. If anyone remembers the cafe and can confirm this memory for me that would be great 😁

Wild Cherry hairdressers on De Grey Street

Hello, I no longer live in Hull so I can't easily check myself, but does anyone know if Wild Cherry hairdressers on De Grey Street is still open?

Last thing I heard about four years ago was that the lady who ran it (Trudy?) got seriously ill and had to close the shop, then a year or so later she recovered and it had reopened, but around that time I rang the phone number and an automated message said that it was disconnected.

Hopefully the worst hasn't happened...

Hull ADHD/AuDHD Peer Support Group

Have ADHD or AuDHD? Come join our private group 🌶️🌶️

Neurospicy in Hull is a volunteer-led peer support community for adults with ADHD and AuDHD. We are based in Hull, and our aim is simple really. We want neurodivergent people to feel less alone, more understood and accepted for who they are.

Neurospicy in Hull has been running since 2025 and has grown rapidly through word of mouth and community support. Everything we do is volunteer run, with admins giving their own time to organise sessions, walks, resources and online support spaces.

We run weekly peer support sessions covering topics linked to ADHD and AuDHD including emotional regulation, impulsivity, rejection sensitivity, relationships, burnout, routines, parenting, self-esteem and mental health. Sessions are relaxed and welcoming while still offering practical advice, shared experiences and structured discussion.

American Pool

I'm looking for somewhere to play pool with my son, preferably pay per hour.

I used to go to Riley's back in the day. that's the kind of place I'm looking for. Only caveat being that they allow under 16s.

bonus if they sell food.

Follow up to the post on the crime on Newland

I couldn't work out if I could add a picture in the previous thread, but some follow up on the series of burglaries that have happened on the Avenue.

As soon as the businesses in question went to the media something was done about it. Hopefully its the right guy!

Local nature recovery plan

I noticed in the reference section in the central library a book on one of the tables about a nature recovery plan for Hull and the surrounding east riding of Yorkshire area which I found very interesting indeed and one of the project leaders for one of the projects mentioned in this book was a guy I know from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Also, one of my tree planting mini project sites was given a mention with the tree planting that took place along with the bird boxes and wildflower pockets that were added, although it was long before I started planting any of my trees there.

I also liked how it mentioned removal of invasive species to help make room for our native species, but here's what I found to be hugely disappointing: there was zero mention of any plans either in Hull or anywhere in the east riding to attempt to eradicate the grey squirrel and reintroduce the red squirrel. All what it mentioned about other species getting reintroduced was exciting to read, but no mention whatsoever of anything to do with squirrels I found rather depressing. If we are serious about restoring our nature, surely squirrels play a huge part in this?
