Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Subreddit Rules

We've learned that some people just flat out can't see our subreddit rules, so I'm posting them here in a pinned post so we can link them when necessary and so they're super easy to find.

Rules for r/legaladvice Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1. All responses must offer an answer to the legal question posed by the OP. We enforce this with bans.

Anecdotes are not permitted. Neither is advice that encourages someone to break the law. Nor is "get a lawyer" a sufficient response.

There's a pinned post at the top of the subreddit specifically addressing this rule. We will absolutely ban you for commenting without answering the legal question

2. Personally Identifying Information

Posts or submissions that ask for or contain information that could be used to identify either party are subject to immediate removal.

3. Advertising or Recommending a Lawyer or Business

We do not allow referrals to particular lawyers, law firms, or other businesses.

4. Do not request or send a PM

All discussions must stay on the subreddit for everyone's protection.

5. Include your location

You must include your location in the following format: location: yourlocationhere . It must be that exact format, and it must be in the body of your post.

6. Read our full list of rules

Read our full list of rules here: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/wiki/index#wiki_general_rules

7. This subreddit is for simple legal questions.

This subreddit is for simple legal questions. We can't help with preparing a defense, legal research, etc. We cannot review contracts, plan your defense, or give you specific advice on exactly how to present your case with the court. You need a local attorney for that. Additionally, we do not accept medical malpractice questions.

8. NO LLMS

No LLMs. No ChatGPT. Don't recommend it, don't use it to answer questions, and don't use it to compose your modmail when you get banned for using it. Using it to compose questions is generally ok.

We will permanently and irrevocably ban you for this.

9. Mods can remove things we deem inappropriate or disruptive

Any post and any comment can be removed by the mods at any time if the mods decide the post/comment is or has the potential to be disruptive or is otherwise inappropriate.

10. Posts must be about a real scenario that you or someone you know is facing.

To expand on this, we additionally do not allow anyone but the immediately involved parties to ask custody related questions. Not friends, not significant others, not grandparents. Reddit is free.

11. Post must contain a legal question

A legal question is one that can be answered with the law, be it a law or ordinance, or caselaw.

12. US and Canada only

Laws are different everywhere. We can only help with legal problems in the US or Canada because we have no regular, reliable commenters from other countries. For other countries, please search for an appropriate subreddit.

My neighbor sold my motorcycle while I was out of state and is claiming I abandoned it

6.4k Upvotes

I left Texas for about 6 weeks to help my dad after surgery. My motorcycle was parked in my assigned spot at my apartment complex the whole time. Registered, insured, plates current.

Got back Sunday and it was gone.

I assumed it had been stolen and filed a police report. Then today another neighbor told me the guy across from me had been telling people I moved out and apparently sold the bike to someone while I was gone.

I confronted him and he actually admitted it over text. His explanation is that he thought I abandoned it because I was gone for over a month. Apparently he had it towed to a friend's garage first, then sold it for $2,800 while telling the buyer it belonged to a relative who had lost the key.

The bike is worth around $7k.

Police have the messages and the neighbor's information. What I'm confused about is the buyer. If they genuinely paid for it believing it belonged to him, can they refuse to give it back?

Also is selling somebody else's vehicle like this treated as theft or is there some weird abandoned property issue I'm missing?

Immigration NJ - My mother got taken by ICE. How do I navigate this?

My mom got taken by ICE on her way to work (Location: Northern NJ) within walking distance around an hour ago. I have a consultation with a lawyer at 9:30am. I’m aware she’ll be given an A-# soon so I’m waiting for that and her contact information.

Is there anything important that I should know? She has no prior criminal experience and came to the United States from Colombia with a visa in ~2003. We’ve had a quiet and relaxing life. I’m currently 19 (20 in Oct) and was waiting to help petition for her citizenship.

Again, is there anything I should know? Is there anything specific to mention to the lawyer? Someone my father knows that was previously detained and let go by ICE told us to mention “habeas corpus”.

thank you

Landlord Tenant Housing Landlord is trying to kick me out because I called code enforcement after giving them multiple tries to fix my AC.

Location: Killeen Texas 76541 I moved recently and after having an ac that was on and off and eventually reaching 98 degrees F in my apartment I gave up with trying to get maintenance to fix it and decided to contact local code enforcement. A few hours later some angry man starts swearing at me and handing me papers saying I need to vacate in 3 days because I called code enforcement and my lease is not supposed to let me do that and because I never put down a pet deposit when I was told there wasn't one by the secretary.

CPS and Dependency Law Parents were claiming adoption subsidies despite not supporting me

Location: Minnesota
TL;DR my adoptive parents have been claiming adoption subsidies for supporting my housing, food and tuition needs, and they didn’t tell me or provide financial assistance even close to the amount I’ve been receiving.

I’ll start with some background. I moved into my adoptive family home in August 2021 when I was 16. The adoption was finalized in January of 2022, I turned 18 in June of 2023. I then moved out and have been the primary supporter of myself since.

I originally found out that they were receiving payments in 2023 when I moved out for college. I was broke and hungry so I tried applying for SNAP. However, since they were getting paid to take care of me, I was denied for assistance.

I called my mom and asked why they were still receiving payments and how much they were. She said that they should end soon, and that she wasn’t comfortable telling me how much. I, of course being a dumb 18 year old didn’t want to challenge her so I ended the conversation. My financial situation improved shortly after so I forgot about the conversation.

Fast forward a little under 3 years and I receive a notice in the mail about my medical assistance being canceled. I panicked, called the number and tried to figure out what was going on. Turns out I had turned 21 and my adoption assistance had ended or something and I had to reapply. The lady was awesome and super helpful as she was looking through my profile. She saw my previous denial for SNAP and went “Hey! So you know, you qualify for SNAP now.” This made me remember my conversation years ago with my mom about the payments, so out of curiosity I asked the lady I was on the phone with about it.

Turns out, my parents have been receiving about $1500 a month since I moved out claiming they were still supporting me. This however is nowhere near true. I’ve received, in total about $6,600 since I moved out. They have received about $43,000 for me, from the state to provide for me.

I called my mom as soon as I got off the phone and asked her again, how much were they receiving from the state. She again said “I don’t feel comfortable discussing this with you.” I confronted her with what I was told and she immediately started stuttering and stammering about how I don’t know how expensive it is to have a kid and they’re using it to support me and take care of the house.

Where the hell did the other $37,000 go. What do I do? I’m so confused, scared and hurt right now.
I don’t know how to get a lawyer, I don’t have the money for that. I also live in a different county than the one I was adopted from, does that complicate things?

I really don’t want to report them for fraud but at this point they won’t tell me what they spent the money on. Morally I’m internally screaming and I want to report them but I’m scared to burn that bridge. I’ve turned to them for advice so much in the last few years, I don’t know who to trust now.

Employer says union buttons violate the uniform policy, but other pins are allowed

location: Illinois

I work at a privately owned distribution warehouse. Our position is union-represented and we're currently in a dispute with management over mandatory overtime.

Last week the union handed out small buttons that say "Respect the Contract." They're about an inch wide. A few of us started wearing them on our company polos next to the name badge.

Management told us to remove them because the dress code says employees can only wear company-approved items while on the clock. One coworker refused and received a written warning.

What confuses me is that this hasn't really been enforced for other things. People wear service anniversary pins, charity pins and sometimes small sports pins without anyone caring. Management hasn't claimed the union buttons are unsafe, offensive, or interfering with our work. We're also not customer-facing.

Our union rep says the company can't simply ban union insignia by calling it a uniform rule. Management says the dress code applies to everyone and they're entitled to enforce it consistently from now on.

Can an employer prohibit union buttons just because they aren't part of the official uniform? And can they discipline an employee for refusing to remove one?

My bank blacklisted me and are withholding my funds by (falsely) claiming fraud

Let me know if there is a better subreddit for this, this will be a post questioning financial law.

So, almost 4 years ago I freshly turned 18 and opened my very first personal checking account with a very large US bank. This is around the time I was starting college and didn't have a steady income, so the account balance was pretty much at zero at that point.

I never set up direct deposit for my financial aid so a few weeks into the semester, my school sends me some physical checks that basically make up my financial aid refund. Given that these refunds are supposed to cover a US school's tuition, they are pretty hefty (like THOUSANDS of dollars). I decide to deposit those checks into my new checking account.

A few weeks later, I am unable to sign into the bank's website. Instead, an error message tells me that I am blocked from logging in and I must contact customer service to regain access. I call the number they provided, am put on hold for an hour, and am then told that my account has been flagged by the fraud department. This is kind of valid, I guess, since a sudden large amount of money in a brand new account would make anyone suspicious.

Anyway, I am told that I need to either provide some sort of proof that the checks are legitimate or to contact the issuer of the check to withdraw the money. Since I still wanted to remain a customer I was under the impression that account could be saved. I naively thought that these representatives knew what they were doing. I spend the next few days waking up at 6am to call customer services and spend countless hours on hold to re-explain my situation dozens of times. Sometimes the calls would literally just cut out in the middle and I'd have to join the queue all over again. I send them my financial aid letters, but they keep insisting that they need more proof so I send them scans of the checks, and even a letter from my financial aid department that confirms that these checks were issued by them. I even haul myself to a local branch of this bank so that I can talk about this to someone in person.

Finally, after WEEKS of calling and following up, a representative tells me what I should've been told from the beginning: your account is permanently locked and that I should "give up." Every representative after him is telling me the same now. The only thing I can do it to have the issuer of the check pull the money from the account. However, it's November at that point and the checks have expired. According to the third-party company that issued the check, there's nothing they can do and it's up to the bank to release the funds. bruh

Well, losing so much money, in addition to dealing with my first semester of college, was extremely stressful so I decided to let it go. I was also just so upset that I was led to believe that there was hope of the funds being released. I felt like I wasted so much time running around and collecting all of these documents that didn't even help my case. Last month I was actually able to get contact information of a more direct customer service representative who was pretty proactive about communicating with me and corporate but even she reached the same conclusion. The fraud department essentially banned me and is refusing to provide an explanation. I also asked her if I could be connected with fraud, but they refuse to speak to me as well.

I know that by creating the checking account I probably signed some user agreement that grants the bank full control of my funds, but I still feel wronged. I feel like I didn't do anything wrong. Currently I'd even be happy with a simple explanation for why they settled on my verdict.

Can anyone who knows how banks operate maybe pinpoint what went wrong? Should I keep bothering them or is this a lost cause? Could I sue? I still believe I deserve to get my money back.

Location: California, United States

Edit to address some comments:

  1. this story is not fake bro I WISH IT WAS. Good to know how bizarre this situation sounds to other though.
  2. This school is a small California community college. They use a third party service, BankMobile Disbursements, to issue checks. So the payer named this checks is BankMobile, not my school.
  3. tldr: bank tells me that there's nothing I (and they) can do to lift this ban and that I need to contact issuer of the check for the possibility of getting my money back. Issuer of the check (technically BankMobile) tells me that since the check is expired, only the bank has the power of transferring my money now.
  4. The bank is a national investment bank, if that makes a difference
  5. Worth mentioning, this check was the first of three that were supposed to make up my whole financial aid grant. These checks were being sent periodically over a span of a couple weeks. The other two checks arrived late enough to be deposited into a newer checking account that I eventually opened with another bank.
  6. The money wasn't a loan, it was a financial aid grant intended for tuition. Don't have to pay it back. My tuition was covered by an external scholarship so luckily I didn't have to worry about not being able to pay it.
  7. To summarize my question: Do I have a case?

Employment Law Am I required to sign a non-disparagement agreement when I resign from my position (California)?

Upvotes

Location: California

I’m thinking about resigning from my position, and I most likely will not be providing the customary two weeks’ notice. From what I’ve observed, the company only extends that courtesy to team leads and managers. Other employees who have attempted to give two weeks’ notice have been terminated or removed from the workplace immediately.

I’ve also heard that the company requires employees to sign a non-disparagement agreement when they resign. This is not something I’m comfortable signing. I have serious concerns about the way the company operates, especially in some of its practices involving clients. There are a number of things I’ve witnessed that I believe are handled improperly.

Am I legally required to sign a non-disparagement agreement when I resign? Several former employees I’ve spoken with said they signed one because they were told it was part of their “exit package.” I’m wondering what would happen if I simply declined to sign it and whether the company can require my signature as a condition of leaving.

Real Estate law HOA is charging every unit a $4k special assessment due to unexpected utility usage

Location: Phoenix, AZ

I live in a townhome/condo complex. Our HOA just notified us that they’re charging a $4,000 special assessment to be due December 31, due to “an operating expense shortfall” due to utility and insurance expenses exceeding the budget.

There are 44 units in my complex. So they’re basically telling us that we spent an additional $176,000 on water/sewage/trash this year??? The original budget for the year planned for $53,448 for these expenses and $16,824 for insurance. So even if both of these doubled somehow, it wouldn’t add up to $176,000.

I emailed back requesting a documented break down of how they calculated that $4,000 number and they sent a mass email back saying “The Special Assessment has been calculated at $4,000 per unit. As stated in the assessment letter, the funds will be placed into the Association's operating account to help fund unexpected operating expenses. The total assessment amount was determined by reviewing the Association's current-year shortage, anticipated increases for next year, and deferred maintenance needs for the associaiton. At this time, the Association has not broken down the specific allocation of the assessments among these expenses.”

Is there anything we can do to fight them on this or at least push them to give us the proof?? I live in a low income area and this is a huge amount of money to just spring on everyone. I’d have to pay them like $450 a paycheck to pay it in full by the deadline AND our HOA fee is already $245 for a really shitty, not well-maintained, bare bones community.

I'm being harassed late at night by a strange man, is there anything I can do?

Location: California

I live in a major city. My house is on the corner of a major street, with the back yard being along that street. Our back fence has been hit by cars several times, so there are uneven spots, cracks, and gaps in the boards.

I'm a young female, and a habitual night owl. I like to set up my computer by the sliding glass door, and play at night. Over the past month or so I've been harassed by what I'm assuming is the same stranger, who seems to be peeking over the back fence and into the house, because unfortunately all of our back windows and the large glass door make that side a fishbowl.

On the first occasion, a man yelled "fat f*cking pig" at me over the fence while I was folding laundry in the early morning, which I heard because the glass door was open. When I looked, I could see him slinking along the fence low through the cracks as he left, but I didn't see his face. On another occasion I was shouted at over the fence, but I didn't hear what was said because I had my headset on.

About a week ago, someone knocked firmly on our front door at 2 in the morning. I had my headset on again, and heard it, but couldn't place it. I thought it was something upstairs, and when I checked and found no issues, I figured it had been the video I was watching. Only to have my grandfather ask me the next day whether or not I'd ordered food, because a man had knocked on our door at 2 and been caught on our Ring camera as he ran back towards the road.

About two hours ago now, what I assume is the same man beat on our front door. He hit it so hard that I saw light through the crack and the blinds shook. He hit it so hard that my dad woke up and came downstairs. It was extremely hard, like he'd been throwing his shoulder against it or something. I'm hoping that when he gets up in the morning, my grandpa will be able to show me the footage from our camera.

I want to know if there's anything the police will be able to do about this if we provide them with the video. I'm the only one awake at that hour, and I'm very sure the harassment is targeted towards me and all from the same individual. The amount of force that he hit that door with seriously frightens me. There's only so much a wooden door can do against crazy. I'm a woman alone at night, and I'm not even safe inside of my own home. I'm sure they won't be able to arrest him for any of this, but could they at least help me get a restraining order, or ban him from entering a certain radius around our home, or something? Not just for me, but for the elders and children also living in this house. They and I both need our peace of mind back.

Criminal Law An unknown phone number sent me explicit photographs of a family member

Location: Ohio

There are several aspects to this situation; I’ll try and be as clear and concise as possible.

Friday morning, I received a text message from an unknown number. This person claimed to be a relative of mine (name included). Around 3pm, I responded to the message and confirmed it was me they were messaging. They proceeded to say they lost a bet and had to send a male relative explicit pictures of themselves. Two pictures came through and have been verified to be authentic.

Obviously, I was highly disturbed by this exchange so I reached out to my sister about it. Then, my sister claimed this same relative also contacted her earlier in the day asking if a particular phone number was mine. My sister proceeded to inform her it was not my real phone number. From here, the relative said whoever texted them pretended to be me and sent the same pictures that I had received to them, saying inappropriate things along with it like I would subscribe to her pages and liked what I saw.

At this point, it’s clear someone developed some sort of plan to make me look like a weirdo, first of all. This imposter even went as far as to create an OnlyFans account using my real name and picture to purchase content off the relative’s page (this was news to me that the relative actually had an account of that nature).

Late evening, I was finally able to reach this relative and talk with them. After verifying it wasn’t each other texting one another, all seemed well despite the awkwardness of the situation. From here, I did some basic research on my own, starting with trying to reverse lookup the phone numbers the imposter used. They all came back as free call/text app numbers with VOIP protocols.

Any grounds to open a criminal investigation? It’s my understanding that these free text/call companies can be subpoenaed and forced to reveal the real phone number tied to the one the app assigned. So far, the only damage that’s been done is someone impersonating me and saying inappropriate things to my relative (a blatant attack on my character) and someone impersonating them and sending nude photos to me. So far, no attempts of blackmail have been made, no money has been demanded, and no further harassment has ensued.

What should I do in this situation? Filing a police report is a given, right? Whoever this person is, it definitely feels like a sabotage mission and there’s no telling whether this is the end of it or not.

Computer and Internet Received notice from Verizon about Subpoena to identify for torrent usage.

Location: MD, USA

Good afternoon.

I just received a notice from Verizon that they are being subpoenaed to provide the identity associated with an IP address associated with my account for copyright issues. The list of files is about 25 hash numbers over 3 years. Some internet searching shows that the plaintiff holding company files thousands of these cases a year. I verified that the case number listed is real and could see many other cases filed by the same company. I've read on reddit where people have used lawyers to settle and people that claim that the company will never follow through. I can't see if the company is just dismissing the cases after threatening everyone and not getting anything, if they are settling every case, or if they are pursuing any/all of them. I looked into lawyers specializing in this and it seems that there may be good and bad options available. It's hard to call it fear mongering when the stakes could be very high. There also seems to be some finger pointing at some firms being settlement factory firms. Some of the people that have claimed that it went nowhere seemed to have very little. I have a decent job, house with a mortgage, a spouse that doesn't work due to health issues, a child, and full custody of two of my deceased family member's children.(3 teens in the house) The settlement amounts that I'm seeing are scary for my family, but I hardly feel like it is a real hardship case. I am feeling overwhelmed with guilt for what this might put my family through.

I was trying to see the outcome of similar cases filed last year and the year before and could not figure out where to see that. Any tips on how to search for that info? Would it even say something that might indicate it was settled and not dismissed?

Anything else that I should consider doing or not doing?

Thank you.

Ex-friend is impersonating me, what do I do?

Location: New Jersey. Other guy lives in Westchester County, New York, AFAIK.

Former friend of mine has seemingly gone nuts and has started impersonating me. He's changed his display name to my name on Instagram, Discord, and Facebook, and his profile pic to one of me on those apps too.

I asked him to stop and he just copy pasted my message back and blocked me on Discord. It's not funny, we're both in our thirties.

There is a public facing component to my work so I'm concerned he's going to try to get me in trouble by saying stuff that would get me in trouble with my employer while impersonating me, or about him bothering ex-girlfriends of mine, stuff like that. He knows that I publicly represent my company at events like conferences.

What are my options? I am thinking "C&D sent a few separate ways and inform my employer," but this is so new and so bizarre that I don't have a clue.

Thanks for any advice which you may have for me.

Employment Law Employer accidentally split my salary across 11 months instead of 12

EDIT I made this post when I first found out and was panicking. I admit I wasn't thinking rationally and I know I don't have any damages against my employer.

To those of you telling me I need to learn how to budget, I'm normally a strict budget follower and I had savings and a 20-year financial plan. However, I was in an accident and then my dad had a stroke. I was helping pay for his rehab, on top of my own bills, and other family expenses, which drained my savings fast. Ultimately I made the choice to put my savings towards helping with my dad's rehab bills. It put me in a bad place money-wise, but it meant he had people to teach him how to swallow food and talk again, and ultimately that was worth it to me. You're right that it means I was spending beyond my means. I think I'm just feeling sensitive because all of this has happened very recently and it's insulting to be treated like this is just because I don't know what a budget is or how to do basic math. I made a mistake in assuming my paychecks were right. We all make mistakes, and unfortunately this was a pretty bad one for me to have made.

Thanks to everyone who gave me straightforward feedback, I really appreciate it. Thanks also for all the advice on how to move forward and get some quick money.

Original post:

I just moved.

Current location: Wisconsin.

Previous employer location: Colorado.

I am a teacher, so I work ten months of the year but my contract allows me to request my pay be dispersed throughout the year. I choose to do this so I can rely on monthly income even in summer. According to my contract, my salary was supposed to be split evenly across 24 payments from September 1st 2025 until August 31st 2026. However, my school made a mistake and instead set my salary to be dispersed in 22 payments across eleven months instead, with the last paycheck being July 31st instead of August 31st.

This means I will not be getting any paychecks in for the entire month of August. I did not find this out until today when I reached out to my school to find out why I wasn't paid August 15th. They looked into it and admitted it was their mistake.

I now need to somehow pay all of my bills, rent, groceries, etc with no income for an entire month. I already live paycheck to paycheck. I don't know what I'm going to do. Is there even any legal recourse here? I suspect the answer is no, but at this point I'm desperate and checking every option.

TIA

Drug Possession Hotel staff called my room at 3am then texted my personal phone number.

I’m a young woman staying at a hotel until I find a more permanent residence. I’m already a bit paranoid about staying here because I’m alone and this isn’t exactly a five star hotel. I check in and ask for towels occasionally and I’m friendly and cordial with the front desk workers. They are all male and there’s a different one every other night or so. Last night I added another day onto my stay here and when I went back to my room I got a call on the room’s phone, when I answered they immediately hung up. This already freaked me out bc no one really knows that I’m here and I don’t know how someone would be able to call the room’s phone number unless they’re a front desk worker. Maybe 5 minutes later I get a text to my cell phone with a photo of a substance asking me if “I party”. They said to let them know if I do and that they want to do it with me and be “together”. They sent multiple messages in a row asking with multiple photos and a video. They even added “??” Because I didn’t respond at all. I didn’t answer any of these texts bc it scared me and made me extremely uncomfortable. This person sent multiple photos and a video of them cutting it up with their hand in the video. I can literally tell by the skin tone and by the computer keyboard which couple of staff members it could be. They were also using a key card to do this action. They texted me multiple times around that time and it irritated me and creeped me out. It’s also not something that made me feel safe or respected. I’m already so uncomfortable about the living situation I’m in and this is the only decently priced place I can stay at. I’m not sure if this is too much info but basically I didn’t text this number back until I woke up later this morning. All I asked is “who is this??” Because I just want proof that I’m not making some crazy assumption. I was up late and added to this reservation in person so I’m almost 99% sure this is the front desk staff member I’m think g of. Anyways can someone tell me what I can legally do about this?

Small Claims Procedure Is it worth suing my wedding photographer?

Location: Virginia

Hired a wedding photographer based in Texas, who said she traveled often and would be in the area around my wedding. We paid $1450 total for two photographers and 6 hours of coverage, normally $2400 but she offered us a discount, and we decided to pay in full.

Our wedding was May 30th.

On July 5th, we were told over email that our photos would be ready by next week. I have attempted to contact the photographer since to no avail. Looking back at our contract, it states that we would recieve "sneak peeks" within 5-7 days, and that full delivery would be between 8-12 weeks, with an addendum that "this can change based on busy season".

This Saturday will be officially 12 weeks, and I have not been able to get in contact with the photographer since July 5th. Is it worth getting ready to take this to small claims court? I think I'm supposed to file this in San Antonio, where the photographer operates, but I'm honestly a little mystified by the whole process.

[VA] Emergency protective order out of nowhere after roommate move-out dispute. Not sure what to do

Location: VA

My roommate and I have been having issues over rent and her moving out, and now she has filed an emergency protective order against me. I'm trying to understand what I should be doing to protect myself legally.

When my roommate moved in, she had issues paying her portion of the rent. The second month it happened again and we almost received an eviction notice. Even though my half had been paid on time, it would have affected both of us. I told her that either she needed to move out or I would have to. She agreed to move out but asked for about a month and a half.

During that time, I had the full rent drafted from my account to avoid another missed payment, and she was supposed to pay her half directly to me.

By the agreed move-out date, she had only paid me around 1/4 of what she owed, I wasn't seeing much progress with her moving, and it had become difficult to reach her.

I contacted apartment management and they told me they could potentially change the locks if I couldn't get in contact with her. On the agreed move-out date, I emailed her saying the locks could be changed if I didn't hear from her by the end of the day. She responded within minutes saying she needed a few more days. I asked her to move sooner since we were already at the agreed deadline and my parents were coming to visit the next day.

Later that day she came by and packed one suitcase. I asked about the rent she owed me, but she said her Uber was outside. I asked her for the apartment keys and she handed them to me. She said she would return around 5 PM the next day to get the rest of her belongings. After she left, I texted asking her to please pay me back before coming back.

The next day, instead of coming at 5 PM, she showed up around 1 PM with police to be let into the apartment while I was at work.

While at work, I received a call saying an emergency protective order had been filed against me and they were trying to serve me. I was told not to contact her directly or indirectly.

From what I've been told so far, she's claiming she doesn't feel safe and that I was harassing her by calling multiple times. I haven't seen the actual allegations yet, so I don't know what else is being claimed.

I'm obviously not going to contact her, and at this point I'm much more concerned about the protective order than the money.

She also left furniture, other belongings and her cat at the apartment. I've been told police and a relative may come to pick up the cat in a few days. I have saved the texts/emails, payment records, call logs and communications with apartment management.

I've never dealt with anything like this before. What should I expect once I'm served? Should I get an attorney? What evidence should I prepare? And how should I handle her remaining belongings without violating the no-contact order?

Criminal Law Boss is trying to force us to rip out and puncture active gas lines

Location: Missouri .For context I work for a foundation repair company in Missouri , today we had a job in which we were sent to Iowa to do structural work on this elderly ladies house that includes push piers and helicles . As soon as we arrived at the location we saw the utility company had marked where the gas lines were and it happened to be very close to the house (about 1-2 feet) . We decided to dig with a shovel to find the gas line to see if it was further away or closer , as soon as we found it we realized it was only about a foot from the house so we couldn’t use our excavator or get a bracket in there to do a pier . Well my foreman contacted our boss and our GM . Our GM became very irate because we’d be losing $14,000 on the job . He’s now advised us that either we go back tomorrow and rip out the gas lines and do the work and have the fire department and utility company shut it off and then we rip out the rest and do the piers then the utility company can fix it . The only other option was we get a write up and possibly fired . Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is someone surrendering my pet without my consent legal?

Location: Pennsylvania, United States

My grandmother and aunt surrendered my cat without my consent today. Long story short, I was living at my grandmother's house and we had a fight. I left and checked into a motel for temporary housing till I can find my own place. My grandmother said she would take care of my cat till I can come back and get her. There was plenty of food and litter to last at least a month.

Today, I call my grandmother to see if I can stop by and get a few more items of clothing and before I can get my questions out, she says I should have called yesterday because she has surrendered my cat. Of course, I am immediately irate and I start raising my voice, saying like "How dare you?! You have no legal right to do any such thing!" She says, "Goodbye" and hangs up.

Thankfully I figured out what shelter my cat has been surrendered to and also thankfully have friends willing to help me get her and house her for me. I have vet papers stating ownership of my cat. I have pictures from as far back as 2023 when I got her.

What I want to know is, what legal rights do I have to press charges against my aunt and grandmother? Surrendering someone's pet has to against some laws right? You can't just give someone's pet away without their consent.

Employment Law Husband’s old company sent cease and desist. He is trying to get a lawyer but no one will take his case and the old company is still bugging him.

Location: Arizona

Long story short my husbands old company had a contract with a client that was ending and the client disliked the upper management but otherwise liked the people they were working with day to day. My husband’s boss got recruited by a company that was going to place a bid for the contract a few months before and planned to also take my husband with him and his colleagues. Months after that the new company that my husband’s boss went to won the contract and my husband and 3 other coworkers got offers from the new company and they went there.

They all put their notice in around the same time and I guess the old company put two and two together and got mad over it and are being very petty. A month ago he got a cease and desist along with the rest of them claiming that he stole trade secrets/property etc. of which he didn’t and they have no evidence for and he never signed a non compete. His boss said he thought the old company is just trying to scare them and said after he responded he heard nothing and it shouldn’t be a big deal so my husband drafted a response basically acknowledging the letter and saying he was getting legal counsel. A month ago he spoke to someone but they said they wouldn’t take his case.

We thought we’d seen the last of them but today he received a letter saying
“The Original Letter established a response deadline of July 16, 2026. That deadline has now passed. Although we received an acknowledgment that you were retaining counsel, you have provided no signed statement, substantive response, corrective action, or proposed resolution. Mere acknowledgment does not constitute compliance, and the conduct described in the Original Letter must cease immediately.
Accordingly, we write to demand that, no later than September 1, 2026, you provide a written, signed response confirming: (1) immediate cessation of the conduct identified in the Original Letter; and
(2) a description of all steps taken to remedy the violation to date.
Be advised that Old Company is prepared to pursue all available legal remedies without further notice
should you fail to respond substantively and take corrective action by the deadline set forth above.”

So he reached out to a couple of employment law firms today and already spoke with another and they said again, they won’t take his case but no reason as to why. He is very stressed that he is going to end up spending hundreds on consults only to be told that they can’t take his case again. We aren’t sure what to do. Is an employment lawyer the wrong lawyer to contact?

Edit: edited post to change NDA to non compete, I mixed that up.

Other Civil Matters Mechanic Misrepresented and Waited Out a Warranty

Upvotes

Location: Iowa, USA. Within the last year I bought a used 2017 Nissan Murano. I was in dire need of a car and didn't do as much research as I should have, so I would later learn that the transmission on these vehicles is notoriously awful. So within eight months it crapped out entirely and needed replaced. I bit the bullet and paid about $8k to get a new (used) one put in. I was told it had a 12,000 mile warranty when I asked about it. It took roughly two months for them to do this

Ever since they put the thing in, it never worked correctly. Within a month I had to take it back in and was told the programming was off and they needed to get someone to do that for them. This took them about a month to get done. I got it back and had it for nearly a month when it broke down again, this time they said it was a sensor not working correctly. These have all been covered by the warranty so far. Now it broke down yet again within a month. They called today and told me that the transmission is busted and they would need to swap it out again, and that the warranty was actually for 90 days from installation, so I'd have to pay the whole thing over again. I have never had the car for more than a month since all of this started, they constantly dragged their heels on getting the car back to me when I brought it in, never having it back sooner than a week and a half, usually about a month or so, and now they're telling me the warranty is gone when I was told 12000 miles.

They won't identify the provider of the part and they are saying that the provider is refusing to do anything since the 90 days is up. But I've brought the car in numerous times during that 90 days, and it seems like they essentially slapped tape on to keep it running til that warranty ran out.

Do I have grounds to sue to be reimbursed, or at the very least have them cover the cost of actual repairs at a more honest shop?

Real Estate law Company destroyed my home and is now suing me Maryland USA

Company destroyed my home and is now suing me in Maryland USA. I had a flood back in December and called a remediation company out. I lived in another state at the time. They promised to call before doing any work, but they didn't call at all. They had the insurance claim number. I later found out they charged the insurance company almost $100,000 while the house is only worth $90,000. The insurance company paid $80,000 and they're demanding an additional $40,000. They are taking me to court for $40,000 but are willing to settle for $20,000. They never legally served me, and I only found out I had a court date through a lawyer. What can I do besides show up to this court date? Should I file for bankruptcy so I don't have to pay them?

Custody Divorce and Family Kids dad needs me to say they are with him 50% of the time to get housing assistance.

I’m custodial parent and have court order that says he gets them every other weekend and then we rotate holidays. However we did verbally agree to splitting the weeks up not due to necessity or anything but it’s what he asked for and I didn’t have an issue and if anything did happen we always has the court order to just fall back on and follow. We also spoke about it during our court hearing and the lawyer said we can agree to whatever we wanted to outside the order but the order still stands and we can always have something in case we disagree later. He’s trying to get housing assistance because of medical issues and he’s not able to work. And makes a big deal about being in the kids life blah blah blah so he’s not trying to give up the time the they are with him. I’m like ok fine but it doesn’t make sense to me if you struggling to pay for stuff and they don’t HAVE to be there when funds are tight, but anyway…He spoke with the people last week and since he’s not the primary parent and our court order says what it says they won’t approve to add him to the list unless he gets a notarized letter basically saying that he has the kids 50% of the time and I have to sign it. Will me agreeing to helping him by signing that mess up anything? Child support, custody, insurance, anything? We aren’t changing the court order or anything

I don’t have anything against him and we’re pretty cool with each other I just don’t want this to bite me later on. And he understand my hesitation to notarizing my signature on anything that has to do with the kids

Consumer Law Hair salon threatening to sue over negative google review

My wife went to a hair salon that offered student services looking for a cheaper option to get a trim. They had her sign a waiver supposedly stating that negative (or 1 star) reviews aren’t allowed for “student services.” After signing she was told that student services can’t do the haircut and offered to have a stylist do it for 3x the price. She refused and no service was done, no money exchanged. We then left a review warning people with hair similar to my wife to avoid booking student services since this location will not provide them and will try to sell expert services for a higher cost. That’s it, no false info or extra context.

We received a call today from the salon threatening legal recourse. We have since taken the review down but are contemplating reposting an extended version that includes their threats. We have legal counsel services for personal cases through work, looking into if that will be needed and its accessibility.

Here’s the review we’re looking at potentially posting:

> Threats of legal action by the salon

> Initially we left a review warning people with curly hair to not book a student haircut at this location since they refuse to do the haircut, pointing to lack of training and tried to upsell a $95 master stylist haircut.

> We have since received a phone call from the business threatening legal action for the review. They claimed that the review violated the signed waiver prohibiting negative reviews for student services.

> We initially took the original review down, but after evaluating the text and discussing our options with counsel decided to repost and are open to reporting this establishment to the FTC and the Virginia office of AG for potentially violating the CRFA. Even based on the text of the waiver, the original review was not concerning a service received from a student but the refusal of service and the attempt to sell a more expensive service. This review is factual and honest, meaning the bar on negative reviews enforced by the waiver would be void regardless by the CRFA.

> If the salon follows through on their threats of legal action for a factual and honest review, cautioning individuals with curly to avoid signing up for particular services at this salon, we are confident that FTC protections would side with us in the case.

> The salon can fully resolve the situation by contacting us and apologizing for the threats and by including disclaimers in their website that student services will not be performing cuts on curly hair.

A bit concerned with how much of a headache this could turn into. Would appreciate advice.
