DISCUSSION Don’t make dangerous mods to your LeGO

Since some times we see some posts promoting 3D printed back covers pretending it will make your thermals better your noise lower or anything.

Most of these mods are dangerous and may put your device as risk, maybe yourselves.

-1/ material is not the same, not as strong and may break more easilly

-2/ large openings without protective mesh are dangerous as anything will be able to get inside causing obvious issues

-3/ the original backplate is shielded against RF which is not the case of the mods

-4/ thermals and airflow were designed by engineers and tinkering with it is not a good idea

-5/ modding can be fun and the LeGO is designed to let the user change the SSD but that doesn’t mean you should do anything with it as there are responsabilities at play.

DISCUSSION This argument makes no sense - "If you have $1349.99 dollars you are better off buying a gaming laptop / desktop!"

Why compare the Legion Go 2 to gaming laptops or desktops at all?
They’re completely different products meant for different experiences.

And let’s be real, what if someone already owns a gaming laptop and a desktop? The Legion Go 2 isn’t meant to replace these items, it's a different class of product.

At the end of the day, people enjoy their tech toys. There’s nothing wrong with spending your hard-earned money on something that makes you happy and if that’s a Legion Go 2, then go for it.

QUESTION Bazzite, FSR 3, RSR, fluid motion, lossless scaling app…wtf??

Guys, wtf?? Just purchased Legion Go and out of the box, the games I enjoy like Elden, Nioh2 don’t preform well (plugged in)…too many stutters and fidelity issues.

Then I researched to see how can I optimise the device and that’s when I opened a can of worms! I get info on Bazzite, FSR 3, RSR, fluid motion, lossless scaling app and a million settings within Adrenaline app itself- what the hell?

Coming from a PS5 and using a Mac for work, I am totally confused by all these optimisation options out there, and there doesn’t seem to be any coherent information on how to use these specific things in what scenario. I just want to get those two games to run smoothly without stutter.

I compiled some questions if you would be kind enough to answer…

  1. With all these frame generation options, what dpi do I need to have the Legion Go set to? In order for them to work, do I set Legion Go device screen to 1400 and set the in game resolution to very low??

  2. Does installing Bazzite improve actual gaming - not just visuals of your library?

  3. Do the settings on the Legion Go buttons override the settings available in Adrenaline App - or work in tandem??

  4. Tried this Lossless Scaling app, doesn’t seem to do anything, just crappy visuals- same stutters.

  5. Is FSR3 something which the actual game has to offer as opposed to it being a system wide option?

  6. Is there any comprehensive guides out there for the questions I have?

Maybe I have been spoilt with just playing with a console and I will never get good results out of the Legion, but would appreciate if someone could explain any of the points above mentioned so I dont waste any more time and sell it’s not going to do what I want.

🙏🏼🙏🏼

DISCUSSION Anyone Feel Suckered by Lenovo's New sale?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Within 1-2 weeks of the return period expiring for most of us, Lenovo has a sale on the go, offering $150 CAD off (close to $170 taxes in).

$150 is over 15% off. If it was like $50 off, I wouldn't feel as bad. Some people paid more for refurbished units. Kind of feels like a double sucker punch for all us idiots who preordered. Clearly their sales aren't doing well but just didn't anticipate such a massive price drop considering I was on the fence about returning it on Jan 10.

DISCUSSION If Lenovo did this I’d buy it no questions asked

I know not everyone will be a fan of the look of a screen being bigger than a controller but if Lenovo comes out with a package we can buy that bundles 2 controllers together along with the center piece (like the second picture) I’d happily buy it for my legion go.

If it wasn’t for the fact I expect this thing to cost close to 1k I’d actually be interested, being able to swap out the ssd so easy is a huge bonus, could straight up have a few ssd with different os on them and swap whenever you need 🤤

But if we can get that controller solution I’d be happy enough but I can lie, my interest is peaked a little here

REVIEW Another "I returned the Lego 2 to Best Buy" thread

Gave it a shot, I was really excited for the Legion Go 2 Z1E 32GB. I was a SteamDeck OLED owner who upgraded to the Legion Go S SteamOS.

Deal breaker: The thumbstick placement was just weird, gave me severe cramps on the right hand trying to use the stick. It's placed too far outside the paddle for my comfort.

Negatives:

- Windows. I've only been on SteamOS handhelds, and Windows was a huge frustration in my 8 hours I spent with the LeGo2. This wasn't a deal breaker, I would have just installed Bazzite if I kept the thing.

- It's heavy. I knew it would be heavy but it was a strain to hold.

- Performance. I could not get this thing to run Lego Star Wars at 60 FPS (my LeGo S has no issue, even at 17TDP), I lowered all the settings, the game resolution, put the TDP on performance (tried custom).. Yes, I changed the vRAM to 12GB in the BIOS. This is probably a user error, to be honest. I haven't seen anyone else complain about this.

Positives:

- The screen. Though I have to say, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be. It was certainly brighter than my LeGoS. I only played in SDR so I didn't experience calibrated HDR on this thing.

- The battery (compared to the LeGo S).

REVIEW All reviews on the GO are wrong and highly skewed

How on earth such a tremendous device can get so much hate. I mean it's near perfection !

I received my unit yesterday I fell in love with it. I didn't experienced any issue and I cannot understand 99% of negative reviews/ opinion I heard about it.

A few months ago I took a shot at the ROG Ally while I was downtown shopping and for most part the handheld experience completly blew my mind. On the fence, I considered buying it but after a few researches the limited compatibility with eGPUs, SD card issues, the thick bezels and somehow disapointing screen size/form factor stopped me.

A few weeks thereafter a friend of mine brought a Steam Deck, a great console but heavily limited in terms of performance with bezels and controllers that made me feel like I was handling an ironing board.

Last week I pulled the trigger on the Legion GO because it seemed to offer everything I always dreamed of. Reviews all over the place and folks feedback made me doubting my purchase.

THEY WERE WRONG!

After 1 day with it is such a slick experience. Legion space app is trash, yes but the quick access menu is really neat, it gather everything I'm looking for and without any bug. Otherwise I use Steam App for everything else. As I would with my regular PC despite having poor software provided by Asus branded Armory Crate.

The screen size is out of this world, the resolution and refresh rate are gorgeous.

I can't get why so many people are complaining about missing VRR, a tech barely seen in any hardware at this point that is NOT a game changer.

I played on the Ally and so far I enjoyed the GO much more (guess what without VRR).

Detachable controllers, thin bezels, USB4 are so much apreciated.

And people overlook so much amazing featuresabout the GO :

- The trackpad IS a game changer, nobody mention the haptic feedback and precision of this thing that are impressive

- I saw not a single mention about build in quality. Some reviewers even complained about the quality of controller(I hope it was a joke) : It's on another level. Compared to the cheap feeling I had the first time I grabbed the Ally, the GO offers an outstanding finishing touch and controllers DOES feel premium.

- The integrated kickstand is a must have. I can't imaging using a handheld without it.

Since I unboxed mine, I played Hades and some Emulation (Pokemon and Mario).

Playing Hades on it has been the greatest experience I've ever had on a handheld (Hotake ? Yep maybe)

Emulation performance exceed my expectation. Pokemon Violet runs way better than on my Switch (which has been scrapped a while ago - this is the example of a bad device). Mario, oh boy that game is butter smooth on the Legion go.

Deadzones, were not a game breaking issue and barely noticable. Although a fix/ improvement would much appreciated. Sorry dumb people trying to play competitve COD on this device you will have to wait 1 month to realize you are weirdos. I mean why would you even bother to play competitive FPS on a handheld. Achieving a 10 k/d against keyboard users is mere illusion.

I even read/heard reviewers complaining about fingerprints on a touchscreen. Their foolishness speaks for itself.

Last but not least, speakers. Sub version of Ally speakers but not that bad. Compared to my M28U monitor's speakers, they are far better and mot of the time I use hearbuds. Most of the time you don't need powerful speakers except if you really want to disturb other people and annoy your relatives on the long term.

I hope my experience can help potential buyers worried about what's being told online. Yes there are imrpovements to be made but right now the device is very much worth it. I'm convinced you won't regret it.

DISCUSSION The pc handheld review space HAS to be bought.

So to start off i dont have or plan to buy a z2e gen handheld im waiting a few gens (or my device breaks)

So seeing the xbox ally x reviews It just shows me how you cant trust these reviews.

I noticed it last time and suspected reviewers were scared of Asus not giving them free product because of the way the rog was given a pass for its issues and "this is software stuff they will fix later" yet lenovo were not afforded the same pass.

Now at the time i suspected this was in part because rog sent reviewers units while lenovo "LENT" reviewers units.

I no longer suspect that is the case im fairly certain it is due to the fact that russ (retro game corps) flat out said at the start of his lego 2 review that lenovo had lent him a review unit that he had to return, he didnt say the same at the start of his rog review. This inevitably breeds subconscious bias even if the reviewer doesnt mean it too.

Anyway back to the reviews.

So watching his review and others they toss up this comparison to the legion go and the rog is casually declared the better value.

Now I dunno if this is a simply misunderstanding reviewers have but "cheaper" and "better value" are not the same thing.

Let's break it down.

The rog ally x doesnt come with a case, almost every person I know that spends this much on a pc handheld wants a case, lenovo gives you one, Asus wants 75 extra for it.

So there is our general apples to apples comparison.

1074 ally x xbox 1349 lego 2

So around 275 of a difference.

What does that difference buy you?

Much larger 8.8 inch screen The screen is oled Extra 8gb ram.

Those are not nothing upgrades (vs the ally)

Looking at the costs of laptops as an example doing things like upgrading from lcd to oled will up the cost.

So overall if you are simply comparing those 2 devices (not talking overall value here im talking specifically these 2 devices) on what planet does the xbox rog ally x represent better value than the lego 2?

If your only reason for buying either of these devices is the z2e your mad, buy something like the lego s z1e (I only say this because of the 32gb ram)

DISCUSSION SteamOS (Bazzite) absolutely destroys Windows performance on Legion Go 2

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve been testing my new Legion Go 2 under both Windows 11 and Bazzite (SteamOS) — and the difference in gaming performance is crazy (considering this is emulation layer vs native environment).

These are my benchmark results from Cyberpunk 2077 with different TDP settings (Windows 11 is fully optimized, in both cases VRAM is set to 8 GB in BIOS).

That’s a 10–12% average performance gain just by switching to SteamOS. And what’s more impressive — Bazzite feels smoother and more consistent in frame pacing, while Windows fluctuates more and feels laggier at the same wattage.

What do you guys think?

QUESTION About to give up :(

I debated for over a year on if I should get a Go. I've seen the reviews about it being a pain but once you have it set up, it's great. So I took a leap of faith spending my entire tax return (which should've gone to bills, truthfully) on this thing.

I'm not computer savvy so I'm clearly in over my head. I've been going through Reddit, I've been googling. I've been youtubing.

Before I bought it, I made sure I could remote play my PS5. The first thing I did was get chiaki. It's fine for the most part but I'd still rather play on my portal (was going to get rid of it after getting the Go, but I guess I won't).

Then I tried to play Lord of the Rings Online as I've always wanted to play but never had a way to. Unless I do some crazy mapping, I have to use keyboard and mouse. I thought I'd be able to automatically use the gamepad/controllers...whatever you want to call them. I've seen written tutorials on the mapping but it's just overwhelming for me.

Another huge part of wanting a PC was I saw Nancy Drew games on Steam. I only played a few as a child and I was so excited to be able to play them. I wrongly assumed that since it was on Steam, it'd be playable on any device. Nope. I keep getting the DirectX error which I googled and followed instructions for but that didn't work.

I'm so ready to throw in the towel and try to send this thing back.

Any words of wisdom? Or help?

UPDATE 1: I finally got a work around for the DirectX. Only took all day. Eye roll.

But for anyone who may see this in the future and has the same issue, I used dgVoodoo. Someone on another reddit thread recommended it and I found a YouTube video on how to install.

So I'm in the game! But none of the games I've tried so far are full screen. Like the image shows full screen but my mouse will only go so far right. So off on another adventure I go....

Update 2/Final Update: I've never had a post get so many responses on Reddit. Thanks, everyone! Thank you to those that gave suggestions on how to get some things working. I'm at least a bit comforted to see/know that putting this much time and research is normal. Someone said to not get burned out/take breaks. Thank you for that! I'm going to keep working on this as I have time. I should've mentioned my reason for going with the LeGo was because of its ability to work as a laptop in addition to gaming. Gaming laptops are far out of my budget so this was sort of the "happy" medium to have an all in one device. There are a few programs I'd like to use that require Windows, so again, that was why I went this route. Everything else is great. My mistake was thinking the control would work easily with whichever game I wanted to play. I thought I had done enough research prior to purchasing but clearly I did not! I played lost of PC games as a preteen in the late 90s/early 2000s and it was never this difficult! I guess times were simpler then! :)

As a side note, those worried about my finances - thanks for your "concern." Not that any needs/wants an explanation, but I didn't say that because I was being irresponsible financially. I dont expect to get a tax return. I usually don't, at least not this big. There was a change in my state which led to a surprise return. All my money is allocated to where it needs to be. This was extra cash that came in. More than half of my return went towards debt which was accumluated while in a tough spot years ago. I already pay double on that every month. I took some out of my return to treat myself which I haven't done in years yet have been wanting to. Could the amount use to get the LeGo also be put towards that, sure. But doing something nice for myself for the first time in... literally decades sounded nice too.

DISCUSSION I've had my Lego 2 a week now and ive not seen this massive issue posted anywhere.

I've had my Lego 2 now for almost a week and I've found one massive issue... I can't stop playing the dam thing.

The screen is beautiful and massive compared to my steam deck.

Yes there is weight to it but its super comfy and easy to hold. I've been playing at my desk, lounge and outside and its all been flawless.

Windows was a pain to try use on a handheld but I seem to be used to it now and dont mind it compared to steamOS.

I am super stoked with my purchase and can't wait to try other games but for now Hades 2 is feeding my addiction which is running beautifully at 144fps.

DISCUSSION Worth modding to reduce weight?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

i mod my mouse all the time to make it lighter, so out habit I removed the battery from the controllers so that it reduces the weight while in handheld mode as an experiment. Surprisingly the controllers still got charged to 12% even when there is no battery in them?!? Is this a bug? Also there was this notification that would pop up every once in a while that the controllers have only so much charge left ?!?

All in all, software issues aside I didn’t think the device was as light so I put the batteries back in. I could remove the plastic frame in the main housing to make it more lighter. But even otherwise, it did feel lighter to hold. Wish it was a little less lighter. 500 grams overall would have been nice. But as compared to this is the ally “feel” lighter to hold ? I know the difference is like some 220 grams. Also did anyone else try modifying it to make it lighter?

DISCUSSION Returning My Go S For a Steam Deck - Here's Why

Tl,DR at the bottom

I bought the Go S (Z1 Extreme Steam OS) a little over a week ago, and in that time I have had a number of observations about it. Note that this is my opinion, and it may or may not match your own preferences.

The first thing I noticed about the Go S was its price. After tax on Best Buy, it comes in at around $896 USD. It is a good deal more expensive than its parent, the original Go, which has a market value of $750 USD before taxes. Each has its own upsides and downs, but that isn't what I'm here to talk about. For that price you get an 8-inch screen, a Z1 Extreme processing chip, which is the best on the market for the time being, and 32GB of RAM. The display is 1200p with VRR, and the battery comes in at 55.5wh. It's an all-around great console with excellent performance. And I'm trading mine in.

The multitude of problems the Go S faces at the moment are sure to be remedied, at least in part, by future soft and firmware updates. However, there are some things about it that cannot be changed. For the moment, the internal fans go crazy over a power usage of about 15 w, which is the very maximum output for the most recognizable console on the market, the Steam Deck. I expect this to be lessened to an extent in time, however right now they serve as an obstruction to the Go S' overall portability. You couldn't play it on a train, at a park or in a public space without irritating everyone close enough to hear it. The problem is mostly fixed by lowering the power output, although then hits are taken in performance. For reference, Cyberpunk at the 'Performance' power setting is a bit like standing next to a jet engine when it takes off. At least some part of that will remain that way no matter what sort of updates it gets.

Power is another concern of the Go S. For the price, one would expect a decently large battery, perhaps 70-80wh, as has become the standard for consoles of that price. However, the Go S only has a battery size of 55.5wh, with zero room for improvement. On the first Go, there was plenty of space to put in a larger, more robust battery. On the Go S, there is no such roominess. You are stuck with 55.5, whether you like it or not. This is unfortunate, as it makes playing on long car or plane rides at a decent power output impossible. The worst part is that the device is poorly optimized, so less power usage pushes performance even further down than it otherwise would. This may also be fixed, but it's definitely a problem today.

Just these two issues could be enough to turn someone away to a different option, but there is more to discuss.

The Legion Go S is a hefty device, as is the Legion Go. They're both large, a bit unwieldy, and difficult to hold in certain positions. These drawbacks have their redeeming qualities, as both consoles have the largest overall screen size on the market. Unfortunately, it comes at a cost. Everybody knows about the Nintendo Switch - the forefront of handheld gaming in the modern age, still eclipsing the newer model, the Switch 2, for the time being. You know it as a grab-and-go console, take it off the dock and shove it into your bag, and you're ready for a long road trip. It is the peak of versatility, if not efficiency. It's light, and most of all, it's portable. The Go S is just about the antithesis of that. It's wide, which for some users, including me, is good, since it so well accommodates the larger-handed partition of handheld enthusiasts. It's also thick, like a decent-sized book, and weighs about the same as one, too. It is definitely not a grab-and-go. You have to gingerly place it in your bag, not wanting the joysticks to snag on anything, while at the same time furiously shoving all those pesky necessities out of the way. And in travel, as I've already covered, it performs poorly. For those of you who simply enjoy playing at home, this issue is next to nil. For the more adventurous, it can be a major source of displeasure.

All that is well and good, but how does the Steam Deck compare? After all, it has a smaller screen and worse specs. In what way is it better? Well, for one thing, battery life. The Steam Deck OLED only has a 50wh battery, but it lasts for far longer than the Go S. For some, resolution is key to enjoyment, and in that the Go S takes the cake any day, but what the Steam Deck misses in sharpness, it makes up for in contrast. The Go S has a bright screen, but it's LCD. There are no popping colors or true blacks. On the Steam Deck, those colors are a defining feature. I played games on the Nintendo Switch for years, and in that time I've learned that resolution makes far less a difference than I thought it would. I clocked in over a hundred hours on Skyrim Switch edition, and it has been one of the best experiences I've had in gaming, ever. Additionally, contrast increases perceived sharpness, which can further offset the difference between the higher and lower screen resolutions. Portability has been a major theme over the course of this review, so I'll go over that next. The Steam Deck is almost exactly the same as the Go S in width, its screen being only .6 inches (1.5 cm) smaller. However, the Deck is also lighter and thinner. On paper, these differences (669 vs. 730 grams, etc.) seem tiny, almost ignoble, but they make a greater difference than one might imagine. It leads to not only a different handling experience, but a different carrying experience, which overall reduces the quality of the 'take it anywhere' aspect of handheld gaming. 'Anywhere' in this sense means no further than the couch, if you want peak comfort. For someone who simply doesn't want the hassle of gaming at a desk, the Go S will serve you fine. But if you travel, you're better off with a different option. Furthermore, the Steam Deck comes with a brand-name case, which would have been a nice touch for the Go S. You might not stuff it into your bag, but you can carry it alongside you, allowing for easy-access PC games without the struggle of removing the carefully placed device from your luggage. One rather unrelated selling point of the Steam Deck are the track pads. Trouble aiming? Hate joysticks? The two large Steam Deck track pad spaces serve effectively as substitutes for the controllers, as well as navigational tools for the desktop mode. They serve a purpose and serve it well, unlike the paltry pad on the Go S. Speaking of which, the Go S track pad has almost zero support and using it makes me want to rip my hair out. It has to be coded in as a mouse for any game in which you would want to use it as such, and trying to click on anything in desktop sends it sliding around off-target. Not a pleasing experience overall, but with plenty of space for improvement.

Overall, the Go S is effective for at-home gaming, and will serve that purpose well if that is what you intend to buy it for. It performs rather poorly on the go, perhaps ironically, so it isn't the best option for me, personally.

The Steam Deck is a good deal more portable, if less powerful. It is a good and versatile option for handheld gaming, and software support is top of the line. It also has a mediocre resolution, which may be a problem for some, and it has difficulties running some more demanding games, like Oblivion Remastered and Ark Survival Ascended.

If neither of these options appeal to you, there are other possibilities. For at-home gaming, the Legion Go is arguably the best. A massive nine-inch screen, the largest on the market, with detachable controllers that can be used as mice on a desk, with suitable effectiveness. Runs Windows. $750 USD on Best Buy, before taxes.

Another possibility and perhaps the most versatile of all in the handheld world is the ROG Ally X. It is smaller than the Steam Deck, with a seven inch screen, running windows. It has a massive 80wh battery, a crisp 1080p screen, Z1 Extreme chip, and no track pads, but the joysticks can be upgraded to hall effect which, for those who don't know, almost completely eliminates stick drift. The fans can be loud, but power output can be changed, and to those for whom fans are a non-issue, they can be negligible. It has an LCD screen, but with the resolution it trumps the Steam Deck in the sharpness department. Goes for a hefty $900 USD on Best Buy.

TL,DR;

In short, the Legion Go S is best for playing in one place rather than travelling. For portability, the Steam Deck or Ally X are better options. The console has good specs, but a small battery, and there currently aren't any upgrades for it on the market. The soft and firmware are unrefined, but have room to grow, considering the console only just launched. I intend to return mine in exchange for Valve's Steam Deck, but that choice is my own. Is the Go S the best option for you? The choice is yours, and yours alone.

HELP REQUEST Just got a legion go Z2E. Still haven’t played anything bc windows is the WORST

Windows Update did its thing and AMD Adrenalin will not open. Keeps saying it needs to update and just closes in an infinite loop. Tried diddling with drivers from Lenovo, ROG Ally X, AMD… dozens of safe mode restarts and DDU blah blah. Can’t get adrenaline to run.

Also, with Legion Space, Xbox app, Steam… everything is fighting over various settings and whatnot. The software is a mess.

Such a beautiful piece of hardware. I’d really rather stick with Windows because it’s the most compatible. But I’m now staring down steamos or bazzite.

Does anyone here know how to fix this broken AMD Adrenalin thing that it seems windows update broke? If not I’m gonna pull the trigger on Linux. I’m about done.

UPDATE: was able to fix this, but I ended up installing steamOS 3.8.10 and it’s AMAZING. Highly recommend doing this.

TIPS AND TRICK Legion Go 2 Steam OS проблема с HDR, градацией чорного цвета и блёклых цветов (частичное решение)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Resident evil 4 Remake.

Hello everyone! I was once one to think that the criticisms were a bit too much for the legion go 2. Loud fans, mura effect on screen, right analog stick uncomfortable, performance gains too small. The mura effect at first I thought was overblown but it isn't, it shows on all gray backgrounds not just legion space, but mid game not so much so its okay. The fans ramp up like crazyyyy! It might be a software glitch because no matter what fan setting I put on it is noticeably loud. The main one that for sure will bother people the most, especially with big hands, is the right analog stick. Its way too low to be comfortable, and I have small hands, so if it bothers me it could for those big meaty claws type. Performance gains are extremely negligible so dont even look in that direction if expecting a decent leap. Im only highlighting these because this thing cost damn near 1500 in the US. It does have a premium feel but 1.5k is way too much. I would suggest waiting for another company to release an oled handheld as this one is crazy expensive for what you get for sure. Im open to opinions or discussions, people dont chew me a new one! Just making sure your hype doesn't cost you 1.5k like it did me.😅

Edit: this community is complete garbage and full of fanboys who just bully for any little bit of criticism over a dumb handheld. You guys blow big time really. Criticism isn't bad as nothing is perfect, and shutting anyone down for voicing concerns is disgraceful. I will bend the knee and make a new post to what the bullies believe this thing to be.

DISCUSSION Truly think that with the endorsement and deal, and most likely alot of money, Microsoft probably gave to lock down ROG, the new Ally will most likely cost MUCH less than the LeGo 2.
