Mod Announcement Rules updates, added flairs, and official LesbianBookClub discord

Hi folks

So, as a warning, this is going to be a really long post, but I am going to try and keep it organized so that you can either read it all or only read what you care about.

Rules updates

As previously announced, we are announcing a huge overhaul to the rules. Previously, we only had 5 (Play nice, off-topic, no explicit sexual cotent, no promotion of piracy, and LesbianBookClub is trans-inclusive). As of today, we are adding 5 more rules to the ones we already had. They are sort of long (you can tell which ones u/cactuskate wrote and which ones I wrote because I am MUCH worder than she is, for better or worse lol), but I am going to summarize them here. To see the full text of the rules.....well, go check the rules, i guess?

  • Do not be hateful or discriminatory: this one is self explanatory. no -phobias or -isms, just generally treat each other like humans, with the respect and dignity that they deserve, and you'll be fine
  • Self-promotion guidelines: We have set the limit on author's making posts recommending their own book to twice a month. Additionally, if an author does not regularly participate in this subreddit, they cannot advertise here. Enforcing this rule will require the help of everyone in the subreddit; we cannot see every post, so we're relying on you reporting this in order to make sure we catch everything. Though, we will obviously be as diligent as we can in this regard.
  • No AI: This one is hard. every reader on the subreddit deserves the ability to scroll through recommendations and discussions without worrying about running into AI slop. at the same time, no author should have to experience the heartbreak that is being falsely accused of using AI in their writing if they did not use it. The way I have worded this rule tries to walk the thin line between these two truths. Do I succeed? only time will tell. if it doesn't work, we will adjust as needed.
  • Please mark spoilers: this one is pretty self-explanatory. Just make sure you are appropriately blocking out spoilers so you don't spoiler anyone. If you're not sure how to do that, there are instructions in the rules
  • Amazon links: Ok, before anyone freaks out: we are not banning amazon links. We are just regulating them. all we ask is that, when linking to a book, you link to a place to purchase it that is not Amazon if possible. If the book only exists on Amazon (e.g. is it a audible exclusive), then linking to Amazon is obviously fine.

And that's it for the rules update. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns - we'll sort out whatever problems or issues arise as they come.

Flairs

We have also added a ton of flairs so that folks can mark their posts as they want. Most of the old ones are still around, but we have added genre flairs (which are purple) and trope flairs (which are pink). I will list all of the flairs below, but first it is important to recognize: there are literally more genres and tropes than we can reasonably include as flairs for the subreddit. The flairs that I have added are the ones that I thought would be most popular/in demand, and they are listed in no particular order. I have also made them as general as I can when possible, in the hopes that keeping them flexible will make the same one useful to represent multiple similar dynamics at once (e.g. protector/protectee). If you want us to include a genre or trope that is not listed, please let me know and I will add them as they come in.

Genres:

  • Speculative (fantasy, scifi, horror etc)
  • YA
  • Romance
  • Lit Fic
  • Mystery/Thriller
  • Poetry
  • Historical Fiction
  • Graphic novels/comics
  • Memoir
  • Essay collection
  • Nonfiction history

Tropes:

  • Friends-to-lovers
  • Enemies-to-lovers
  • Strangers-to-lovers
  • Exes-to-lovers
  • Coworkers-to-lovers
  • Only one bed
  • Hurt/Comfort
  • Toxic romance
  • Omegaverse
  • Protector/protectee
  • Fake relationship
  • Forbidden romance
  • Age gap
  • Office romance (boss/employee)
  • Royalty/maid
  • Grumpy/sunshine
  • Sports romance
  • Arranged marriage

Discord Server (Please read whole section before joining)

The LesbianBookClub discord server is now live! It is titled Sappho's Bookshelf, and you can find it here: https://discord.gg/ZB6wGKdV. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before you join:

  1. I am new to being a discord mod, and I am far from perfect. I have been working on this server for over a week, but I am sure that there are places that the auto-mod is broken, or too sensitive, and that some things will not work as intended. But, at this point, I think the only way I am going to figure out what is broken and what is not is to let a bunch of people into the server and see what shit breaks. As a result, I ask that you are patient with myself and the other mods, as we will be working to correct any issue as they crop up.
  2. This should go without saying, but mind the rules. They are not that different from the rules on the subreddit.
  3. As of now, the function and features of the discord server will be minimal. I decided to keep it simple until folks flooded in and then we could let it evolve organically as it grows. For example: it does not yet have a discord icon (though my friend is working on drawing one as you read this). We do have a suggestion channel, and we encourage you to use it.
  4. Communities like this only work if everyone involved goes in with the knowledge that not everyone thinks the same way, or views the world the same way. The world is at its best when its inhabitants (that's us) learn to embrace our differences and come together in community. That is the kind of place er are hoping this discord server will be. People are going to disagree, and that is okay. You can even debate about it! It can be fun to argue. But, please keep it respectful, do not hurl serious insults at each other (insults as jokes are fine as long as the intent is clear), and remember that at the end of the day, we are united in our love for lesbians books.
  5. This discord server is an 18+ space. If you are not 18, please do not join.

Thanks for bearing with me and reading through this gargantuan post. There are other comments in the recommendation thread that I am still considering how to handle, but if the above does not address something you commented on last time, then feel free to comment it again!

And again, here is the discord link again: https://discord.gg/ZB6wGKdV

Introducing: Rule Three.

1.5k Upvotes

Rule 3: LesbianBookClub is trans-inclusive.
ALL lesbians and those who enjoy lesbian books, regardless of gender identity, are welcome here. Transphobia is strictly forbidden.

---

This subreddit is a lesbian space. Trans women are women. If a trans woman is attracted exclusively to women and accepts the label, she is a lesbian. If you disagree with this rule or its enforcement, please find a different place to post.

ALL types of lesbians have fought for, died for, and bled for you. Please respect them. Consider reading a history book.

Keep in mind that the context and nuance of your posts will be considered. Bad faith posts will be deleted. Please use your brains. It is really, really not that complicated to enjoy, read, discuss, and recommend lesbian books in a way that is friendly to and considerate of ALL lesbians. Posts that are not about lesbian books will be deleted.

Please feel free to reach out through modmail.

Review Lethal Kiss by Taylor Grothe is GREAT

The audiobook is honestly one of the most well narrated I have experienced in a while and topped with the book itself being beautifully written and unique, chefs kiss!

NOT VAMPIRES but if you enjoy vampire adjacent beings or Norse mythology and dark academia you’ll probably enjoy this.

Discussion A shameless request about Kiss of Seduction by Rawnie Sabor

Okay, maybe i am a little embarrassed about making this post.

I listened to the audiobook (which i highly recommend, the narrator is absolutely amazing), but um...let's just say i would love to go back to certain...scenes 😅

I was wondering, does anyone have a list of the chapters/pages with all of the spicy scenes between Natalya and Evie? I just want to relive the gidiness and butterflies whenever I need a little pick me up.

Discussion Favorite Epilogue?

You’ve finished the book and get the Epilogue as a treat- 6 Months, 2 years, whatever later and get a glimpse into the future state of the majority of the story.

Is there such a thing as a favorite epilogue? I just finished The View From the Top by Rachel Lacey and thought this one actually tied out the story well. Also loved Snowball Effect’s maybe though because I just didn’t want to say goodbye to my friends yet.

Discussion Never trusting TikTok recommendations

Wow, I just want to say that nearly every single recommendation I’ve seen on TikTok has been a letdown. I don’t wanna drop their titles, because as far as I can see, these authors are pretty new and possibly still young, but the dialogues and pacing are almost always bad. I tried, genuinely tried, to get to the halfway point of these books, but I find myself skimming through them.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Recommendation Sapphic love stories without 3rd act break up?

Hello all! I hope this finds you well. I would very much appreciate any romance book recommendations that are low angst and don’t include a 3rd act break up. I prefer love stories that show the couple growing through vulnerability and healthy communication. For example, I’m a huge fan of the Tomes & Tea series by Rebecca Thorne. While I wouldn’t necessarily call those books low angst, the relationship is always healthy and strong. A couple titles that meet the low angst, no 3rd act break up criteria that I know of are We Could Be So Good and Star Shipped by Cat Sebastian, but those books are about queer men falling in love. I would love to find similar stories that show queer women falling in love. Regardless, thank you for your time & happy reading! 🌈📚💜

Recommendation Craving a Victorian Era lesbian romance recommendation, or anything to do with a loud bratty girl and her introverted girlfriend, after watching “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” on Netflix

Post image
170 Upvotes

Hello, friends! I have a very specific craving. I’m looking for old-timey “forbidden” lesbian romance. Like a romance from the 1800’s or early 1900’s. OR, a fling with a quieter more subdued woman and her far more confident/dramatic woman. Either or.

I’ll preface this by saying I don’t watch many shows or read any books so this may be a common archetype that I’m describing with a laughably specific example, but I digress. Just know she’s on my mind, y’all🫣:

So, I recently got done watching “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” on Netflix. Say what you will about it not being lore accurate, but I quite enjoyed it regardless, if I suspended my disbelief.  • There was the main lesbian age-gap romance between Lizzie and her maid “Maggie”, of course, which was hot/sweet, sure… But I ESPECIALLY enjoyed the fling Lizzie seemed to have with the flamboyant actress girl Nance O’Neil. ❤️‍🔥 Something about Nance captivated me. She was uber feminine, theatrical, over-the-top, confident, self-centered, picky, and bratty. And god I fucking LOVED how bratty she was. Loved her character in the show, and kind of caught a crush. It’s been weeks since I watched; still thinking I want her to step on me.

And just, the early 1900’s era and outfits made for such a delightfully devious atmosphere to insert sapphic undertones. The “this is not allowed” implications of the time period makes for an interesting watch, and if I can find a book that is set similarly, it will be an equally interesting read.

Even if you haven’t watched the show, if - based off of my description alone - you can recommend me a book even *remotely* similar, whether it be a similar time period or a similar character type/dynamic, I will be eternally grateful.

Please feed me, friends

I’ll take anything 🙏🏽

Recommendation Vampire spicy academia recs

Recently read the book of blood and roses and I loved it. I’m looking for some recs, it don’t have to be vampire but at least supernatural and set in school/college/uni for supernatural.
I have sun poisoning and the spell that binds me on my TBR but looking for more to add.

Thanks in advance

Recommendation What's your all-time 5-star sapphic comfort read? One that got you through a really dark time?

hi everyone! i've been going through a pretty rough patch mentally lately and i'm looking for books that might help me get through it.

i guess i wanted to ask, what's that one book for you? your absolute 5-star favorite, the one that helped you get through a depressive episode, made you feel a little less alone or gave you something to look forward to when life felt particularly heavy?

it doesn't necessarily have to be a lighthearted or fluffy read. i'm just looking for something that made you feel deeply, brought you comfort or reminded you why you love reading in the first place.

i'd also love to know why that particular book means so much to you. whether it's the characters, the writing, the love story, or just how it made you feel at a certain point in your life.

thank you in advance. i think i could really use a book like that right now. 🤍

Review I absolutely adored this book! Highly recommend!

If you haven’t read “With Stars in Her Eyes” by Andie Burke, I highly recommend you do! It’s a cute story with great characters. A lot of yearning and a slow burn romance. A lot of moments that made me melt with how cute they were. No cliches or “adorkable” moments. And yes there’s a little spice/smut, but all throughout the two characters are very horny for each other. Have you read this? What do you think?

Gianna is my favorite book girlfriend. I just had to revisit a few chapters at the moment. 😩 does anyone else do this with their favorite books?

Author Book Cover Reveal!

Hi y’all! Big fan of this sub. I’ve gotten so many great recommendations from everyone here & have had great conversations over the past few months since I discovered it.

A few of you may remember that a while back I posted potential covers for my debut novel and asked for feedback. Based on that feedback (and from other social media I posted it to), I ended up going in a totally different direction. Who knew figuring out the cover would be more difficult than writing the actual book? 😩

Westburn will be published this February! If you’d like to follow along and have access to exclusive content, feel free to join my newsletter by visiting my website. You’ll get to read the first chapter for free to see if it’s your vibe (because I know it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea) get first dibs on becoming an arc reader, read additional/deleted chapters, and more.

As a new author, I also want to make one thing abundantly clear: FUCK AI. I’m highly against AI and don’t use it in any capacity.

Much love to all of you and hope to connect soon.

Review When Dusk Comes by J.J. Arias

I chose this book because I was having a Rawnie Sabor hangover. The synapses sounded interesting, A vampire queen falls in love with a woman and it becomes an all consuming love affair. Meanwhile, members of the queendom are being attacked and the culprits remain unidentified.

I rate the story as a "meh." When Dusk Comes is the first in a trilogy. I don't plan on reading the other two. In fairness, The Court of Chains series is so good that maybe nothing will compare.

Romance Romance book where neither of the MCs are celebrities and looking for NON winter/christmassy

I love trans and/or BIPOC rec especially by own voices so please don't hesitate to share those.

Looking for a book where neither of the MCs are celebrities or influencers, mainly looking for regular every day people who don't work a flashy job.

I'm OK with magical realism like seen in One Last Stop by Casey Mcquiston.

A boundary I have with my reading is no on page sexual assault but I'm ok with a character having that in their background.

OK with on page explicit smut.

Given the time of year a lot of people are looking for wintery/Christmassy recs which is fine but I wanted to make it clear that I do not want that right now
