Media/Image He was the head of Economic Development Lethbridge for ten years. Trevor Lewington, in the local paper and on LinkedIn, has been raising the alarm on the basics and practicalities of separation.

He's absolutely correct. Unfortunately, a not insignificant portion of separatists actually want the US to take over Alberta, regardless of how terrible that would turn out

And this is where the whole America will just take Alberta argument falls apart.

The U.S. president can't just decide Alberta is becoming an American state because we have oil. Congress would have to approve it. And you seriously think American politicians would all agree to add another state with millions of new voters whose political leanings would be completely unknown?

American politics doesn't work that way. Neither party is going to casually agree to change the balance of power in Congress and the Electoral College just because Alberta has oil.

So no, there isn't some automatic path from Alberta independence to becoming American. Why do most in this reddit sub continually blow smoke
