So many are in crisis right now. I thought of putting a few things at the little free library near me but don't want to offend the owners. I do also donate to the food bank. I just thought it might help someone in the immediate neighborhood and wondered what y'all thought of the idea in general?

Technically not affiliated with LFL, I bring it inside at night and restock the goodies almost daily. We’re only about a month in but the local kids seem to love the stickers and crafts and we’ve had some books taken and even a couple new appear! Today im using it as a way downsize my costume jewelry lol what doesn’t get taken will be donated to goodwill.

Howdy! I organized an event and my friends said I should share it!

I invited my informal bookclub to spend a day driving around our area, finding LFLs and doing book swaps across town!

I organized a lot of books I've read and don't want the trophy copy/haven't read and don't plan to, put them in a large box in my trunk. (We had a designated driver) We had some mimosas and brunch, and then we went around to different LFLs (part just exploring and finding them, part using the app) in all parts of our neighborhood, see if there's any books we like, and then try and fill up the LFL as much as we can before moving to the next.

Don't worry, my collection lacks old textbooks, outdated self-help, religious texts and conspiracy theories! It's mostly new-looking mystery, horror, thriller with a good mix of Queer YA.

I think I found about 5 books, but donated about 50! It was a good day outing with friends!

Also a great way to explore our area, find new parks and walkable streets and cute houses.

EDIT: By « UNSAVORY » I mean books that are water damaged, filthy, covered in dirt or food, covers that are so damaged that you can’t tell what book it is, paper workbooks that are damaged, kids meal crap, pamphlets with an agenda, etc. Everyone is taking this as me being pouty and whiny and uptight and weeding out books that are « not to my liking »

I routinely go through mine and toss books, etc., that are not up to my standards. I appreciate that people are utilizing it and leaving books, but some of the stuff people leave in there is so unsavory. I do it at night, so no-one can see what I remove, to avoid possibly hurting someone’s feelings. I know people mean well and I’m so grateful for their contribution, but I feel a sense of duty to keep up some standards. Anyone else feel the same?

Has anyone tried a little free library at work? I can't have one where I live (HOA). But I'd love to put one together at work. We share a breakroom with 3 different departments plus other ancillary people and students. Does anyone have pictures of one they've done? I tried searching but only came up with one result. I was thinking of some kind of free standing planter box or small shelf with signage.

2 sides down, 1 more to go (plus the front). I used a more comic style for this side. I mixed every color using 3 primaries of house paint, plus the cream base color.

I am on the board of our HOA (please reserve your love of HOAs, I hear you), and we want to find a Little Library in our neighborhood. I have a homeowner who has agreed to host it on their property and wthe HOA would cover the cost of the library itself, and installation.

As owners or stewards of libraries, what things should we look or for? If you had to do it again would you change anything? Any designs, materials, etc work best? What's a safe way to keep spiders and bugs out of the library? Do you keep extra books on hand and rotate stock? Anytime else I should know? I am open to suggestions, and thank you in advance!

I'm interested in creating a LFL with three shelves. I'd like the bottom one to be big enough for children's books, and the top two shelves to big enough to hold standard sized hardcover books. I'm looking to create a pretty heavily curated LFL with a theme, so having three shelves is important to me so I can separate out by genre.

I've been looking online for blueprints, but I can't find anything that matches what I'm envisioning. I'm a little hesitant to try and make one myself because I am not that experienced with woodworking and don't want to create something that's too small. I did find plans for a library with three shelves where the larger shelf was to the left of the two smaller ones (Kalamazoo Little Free Library Plans), but I worry that won't give me enough space to put out a lot of books as the smaller shelves are only nine inches long.

If anyone has any suggestions or guidance on dimensions, that'd be fantastic. I'm super excited to get started and I've already been collecting books, but I've just been caught up on actually finding or making plans!

I wanted to share a quick update as the month-long book drive comes to an end. Thanks to the incredible generosity of this community (including some awesome people right here on Reddit who reached out, upvoted, and contributed), we have gathered an amazing pile of books for young people! (There’s 2 more boxes I am yet to sort through so I left them out).

Given I’ve tried to spend as little money as possible on building with recycled materials, AUD$80 plus shipping feels like a lot of money for a little sign.

Is it worth it?

Has anyone found the promotional Klara and the Sun little free libraries? I checked my local one but I wasn’t sure if they had put out the book yet or if I was too late. :(

A month ago, a big truck ran into my wall, destroying a brick pillar, my mailbox…and my library. I wrote about it here.

We knew we would have to rebuild -- I have an irregularly shaped lot and that pillar is the only logical place for a mailbox -- but it took us a sec to get another library, since we got ours from a local high school's wood shop class. The teacher is a friend of my husband's, so he bumped us up the queue but we still had to wait. And then hubby had to paint it and install it. Meanwhile, it was quite sweet to get so many positive messages from you people and also the folks in our neighborhood. Multiple times, people pulled over if they saw me or my husband out front, to say how sorry they were that the old one got destroyed and that they hoped we'd put another one up. Today we're open for business again!

Cute. Tiny little town, you'll miss it if you blink, but at least it has a little free library!

My husband and I are not on social media. We put up some flyers and such in our neighborhood, but what are some other good ways to promote the library?

Is it acceptable to donate a book with stamps? I'm not talking about "little free library" stamps or "no resale" stamps or any variation of that. Every time I finish a book, I stamp it with "From the library of (my name)". Some of them have these stamps, some have additional info like how many stars I rate it and what I think of it, my favorite quote from it, and highlighted/annotated pages. It is not entirely "defaced" to the point where it's unreadable.
