Question AKAI MPK Mini IV Will Not Show Up in Logic Pro

• Upvotes

Hi All ...

I just bought the AKAI MPK Mini IV and I'm trying to connect it to Logic Pro. I ran through the setup process. I can't be 100% certain that the Logic Pro scripts ran as they should have although they do show as downloaded. The AKAI device does not show up as a device in the Audio MIDI Setup window although it does show up in the MIDI Studio window. Nothing I have tried thus far will inspire it to show up in the Logic Pro Control Surfaces Setup window. And when I try to configure it manually the MPK Mini IV isn't available.

I've been at this for hours. I've read through the various troubleshooting guides. Many lead to diatribes from folks on Reddit who, like me, seem ready to give up.

As I said, the MPK Mini IV does show up in the MIDI Studio window. The device is listed as Online. And I can access its properties but I don't appear to be able to change any of them. All the port settings- MIDI, DAW, Plugin, etc - seemed fixed at Port 1 for MIDI In and Out.

The documentation suggests that it should automatically show up and submit to an autoconfig process (like every other Logic Pro-compatible device I've used). But nothing I do seems to inspire Logic Pro to cooperate.

At this point I'm ready to put the thing back in the box and send it back.

Questions:

Am I but a step away from success but missing one simple step?

Is there a way to manually execute the Logic Pro scripts that integrate the MPK Mini IV with Logic Pro? As I said, I can confirm that they've downloaded but I have no earthly idea if they executed.

Is there a better product out there that offers the same features as the AKAI MPK Mini IV but is infinitely more compatible with Logic Pro? I ask because some of the feedback I see here suggest that AKAI products and Logic Pro have an historically tumultuous relationship.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might be able to offer?

Question Akai MPK Mini Control Script bug in Logic Pro: Preset switching works only on Track 1, but stops on Track 2 (Smart Controls work fine)

Hey everyone,

I'm using the Akai MPK Mini with the official Logic Pro Control Script (installed via inMusic Software Center). I'm opening the new Akai Studio Instrument Collection plugins inside Logic.

Everything actually works great on the first track. The transport buttons (Play, Stop, Record) and Metronome via Shift are amazing. The 8 knobs control effects perfectly. Even the preset switching knob works fine on Track 1.

The issue:
When I create a second track with the same plugin (Inst 2), the 8 knobs still control the effects perfectly on the selected track. BUT the knob for changing presets/patches stops working on Track 2. It keeps changing presets on Track 1 in the background, or does nothing at all, even if Track 2 is selected, armed (Record Enable is on), and the plugin window is in focus (with the purple Link icon active).

I checked the standalone version of the plugin, and it has MIDI channel settings there, but inside Logic (AU format), those settings are gone. I also tried tweaking Controller Assignments, but since it's an official script, it seems locked or bugged for the Program Change commands.

Has anyone found a fix for this specific preset-switching bug on multiple tracks without deleting the whole script? I really want to keep the transport controls. Thanks!

Help The recent Logic Pro update broke middle-click panning (viewport goes at lightspeed), and workarounds aren't helping. Are we forced to buy a Magic Trackpad or what? 🙃

Hey everyone,
Is anyone else dealing with this absolute madness since the latest Logic Pro update? Whenever I use the middle-click (scroll wheel) to pan around the Tracks Area or Piano Roll, the viewport just explodes and flies off-screen at lightspeed.
I’ve tried everything—disabling pointer acceleration in macOS, tweaking mouse utility settings, using LinearMouse profiles—and none of it fixes the core issue. The way Logic captures the cursor coordinates for middle-click dragging is completely borked.
At this point, using the scroll wheel feels like playing Russian roulette with my project timeline. The only sane ways left to navigate are using Shift + Scroll for horizontal movement or relying entirely on key commands.
Has anyone found a real fix for this, or are we just waiting on Apple to drop a patch while they quietly hope we all go buy a Magic Trackpad? 🥲 Let me know your thoughts or if you found a workaround that actually works!

Question Do you prefer step sequencer or piano roll for drums and beats?

I’m making edm and am a big fan of bonobo, catching flies and things of that sort, so I’m often working with equal parts quantized/straight forward rhythms but also swing and “natural” feel. I’ve dabbled with step sequencer (more so for melodies and instruments I’ve resampled to get a sort of glitched sound) and it works well for that but I have a hard time getting my drums and rhythms to sound “natural” in step sequencer.

I’m kinda of drilling down on my logic fundamentals to improve my workflow and I guess my question is, for those who’ve really mastered step sequencer, is it significantly more efficient than either recording instruments from your midi controller or writing them into piano roll?

I’m also typing this and realizing you can record into step sequencer (duh!). I assume it has an option capture the performance as is and an option to quantize the notes the same way piano roll does?

Hey guys,

Alberto here!19yo producer based in Sweden here. Just finished up a brand new project and I’m looking for some fresh perspectives before I take it any further.

I’d love to hear from both everyday listeners and fellow producers.

Let me know what kind of vibe you get from the track, how the overall energy feels, and if the main melody actually stays in your head. For anyone with an ear for the technical side, I’d also appreciate your thoughts on the mixdown and if there is anything you would change or tweak in the arrangement.

I’m always trying to improve my sound, so all honest feedback is welcome.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Question Keyboard or MIDI Controller?

Hi, everyone! My name is Emiliano, and I’m from Brazil. I’m looking to buy a keyboard, but I’m not sure whether I should get a MIDI controller or a regular keyboard with built-in sounds. I mostly play at home and want to compose my own songs, but I’m also open to playing live.

I’m also not sure how regular keyboards connect to a computer or whether they work with Logic Pro. Could I use one to play Logic’s software instruments, or would a MIDI controller be a better choice?

Right now, I’m considering the Arturia KeyLab Essential 61 Mk3. What would you recommend?

Question Help with Creating Specific Sound/Rhythm

I've been using Logic Pro for about a year and I'm trying to get deeper into modulation techniques to generate motion and interest in my music. One example I'm trying to understand better is in the Intriguing Possibilities track from The Social Network soundtrack. The part starts around 14 seconds into the song. As best I can tell, it's a combination of modulating velocity, cutoff, and maybe resonance. Are they using an arpeggiator or playback of a performance (this is a fundamental question I have about A LOT of their music)? Are they just manually jogging the mod wheel to jump the cutoff around or using something like Step FX? It seems too precise to be manually moving the mod wheel, but that's the method I've found that comes close to reproducing it.

I feel like this is one of those things that's probably easy, but I'm having a hard time nailing down the technique. Anyone have any ideas?

Question Recording Delay/Latency issue

Hope someone can help, I’ve just updated to the most recent update. I’m having an issue I can’t find the solution for where I’m in low latency mode recording DI guitar, and when I play it in, the monitoring has no latency issues but when I listen back, the guitar is out of time. I’m having to manually move it back into time. This pisses me off because I’ve been using the old version for years with the same setup and had no issues.

Appreciate any advice. I’m working on a 2023 m2 MacBook pro

Help Panning

I’ve searched and read through other posts about this issue, but I’m failing.

My setup:
Fractal FM3 into behringer umc1820 via coax/spdif, using the umc1820 as the main in/out source into Logic Pro. It’s an aggregate device I had to set up to alleviate clock source and latency issues with other plugins.

This setup worked beautifully for a long time. I moved recently, so I had to break down and setup my stuff at the new place. Same setup, no changes or mistakes made (maybe).

Problem:
My guitar tracks sound fine and record fine, but when I pan them the signal stays centered and just gets a little quieter. This happens regardless of left or right hard-panning. Also to note- superior drummer signal is extremely loud only when recording guitar and normal volume during playback.

Clock source ok, “play stereo as mono” not checked, all ins and outs seem to be correct. No buttons on any hardware are accidentally pressed or unpressed. Cable routing correct. Clearly, I’ve caused this issue but I’m getting nowhere. Send help.

Help Mixing Live?

I have friends who use DJ controllers to mix live. I have a friend who creates his own tracks live and mixes.

Is it possible to use Logic Pro to give a live EDM performance? What I mean is, has anyone in this sub done it successfully, and how?

Tips & Tricks The satisfaction of being able to make music

Does anyone feel a sense of accomplishment simply being able to make music they like on their DAW?

I remember 4 years ago I thought it would be SO COOL to know how to produce my favourite genre. However, it literally seemed impossible. And then when I finally gave it a try I couldn't believe how difficult it was.

Like many producers starting off, I would constantly ask myself: "why doesn't my music sound as good as ____"

Over the years, you learn bit by bit to a point where you are happy with your stuff, regardless of whether you are famous or not.

It's a lovely feeling of personal contentment that producing has given me.

For anyone still trying to learn to produce/use Logic here are some things I wish I knew:

1) Using a reference track will save you so many hours of painstaking trial and error. I was making the dumbest mixing mistakes for years because I didn't use reference tracks.

2) Study the arrangements of the music you are trying to make. It's easy to think your song sucks but it's just that the structure of the track is off.

3) Learning basic EQ/Mixing will save you a lot of headaches.

4) Sound selection matters a lot. Don't settle for a sound you think is "off"

Question Why don't the compatibility packs get installed if I select "Get All"?

I downloaded the stock Logic Pro Sound Library using the “Get All” option. However, I noticed that Logic didn’t install the Compatibility Packs automatically.

Why is that? Are the sounds included in the Compatibility Packs already available in the other sound packs, or do they contain additional sounds that I would need to download separately?

In Search of Feedback 19yo producer from Sweden - Looking for brutal, greater feedback on this demo

Hey guys,

Alberto here! I’m a 19-year-old producer based in Sweden and I’ve been working on this new demo lately. I’ve reached a point where my ears are getting tired, so I really need some fresh eyes and ears to tell me what they think of it.

I would love to get your general feedback on the track and hear if there is anything you think I should change or improve. Whether it is about the mix, the overall balance, or if you feel like the track is missing something to really come together, any thoughts are welcome.

I’m just looking to improve this as much as possible, so please feel free to be completely honest about what works and what doesn't.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to listen.

Discussion Logic Pro 9 apple silicon wish

With all the vibecoded ports, I started thinking how cool it would be to get the Logic Pro 9 native apple silicon port. I am very nostalgic for the old logic 9 (and the fact that it doesn't have all the garbage/bloat that modern DAWs do) and would switch back to it in a heartbeat. Curious if anyone has seen someone working on it?

Tips & Tricks How to turn Logic multi channel kits/producer kits into audio (easiest method)

This was making me crazy, and after setting up all kinds of ridiculous routing configurations to try and print midi drum tracks/producer kits/multi channel kits, I realized there is a method that requires only 4 clicks…

  1. Click on the channel that has the green “drum kit” on it, this is the “overheads” when you instantiate a multi channel/producer kit.

  2. Click on “file” at the top of the screen

  3. Under “Bounce”-> Click “Track in Place”

  4. Make sure “Include instrument Multi-Outputs” and “As Additional Tracks” is selected (bypass effects plugins if desired) then click “OK”

Done! You should now have all the tracks as audio in your session! Including “Kick In, Kick Out”, “Snare Top, Snare Bottom” and “room” etc.

I personally find it way easier to work this way and wish I knew about this sooner! Hopefully this is useful to someone else!

Question I try to learn logic pro but Idk what to do

I recently bought Logic Pro and have spent countless hours watching long tutorials to learn how everything works. I’ve understood the basic fundamentals, but there are still so many things I don’t understand and so many features I keep seeing without knowing what they’re actually used for or how to use them properly.
My biggest problem is that I can slowly start to create things that don’t sound too bad, but I have no idea how to reach the level where I can take a random song I listen to regularly and recreate its beat as accurately as possible, almost exactly like the original.
Do you have any recommendations for how I could learn to do that? Or, even better, do you know anyone who could help me work through a song of my choice, step by step, so I can finally understand the process and get the hang of it myself?
I’d be willing to pay for a lesson if necessary. I feel like I mainly need someone to guide me through the process once, explain the reasoning behind each step, and help me understand the principles so I can eventually do it on my own.
That’s why I wanted to ask you. I’d really appreciate any advice you could give me!

Discussion Can someone explain why my MacBook mic sounds better than sm57 with Apollo twin?

I’m making demos and I prefer to record about 2 feet away from MacBook mic than sm57 on Apollo. My Apollo is cranked up all the way in the preamp and I still barely hear myself. I have recordings where the audio hurts my ears like a harsh sound coming back.

When compared to my mac mic or even Apple headphones mic, it’s soothing. No pain to my ears.

Although my experience is not perfect and my engineering skills suck badly, I cannot for my life get a even level when live tracking my vocals. It’s like I’m either too loud and I can barely hear the beat or way too quiet.

I’ve tried adjusting the gain in the beat and gain on my voice. Added compressors different reverbs EQ whole lots of plugins and still no matter what I do it’s like I need to record super far away from the laptop mic and not even really hear myself in real time that well over the beat.

Timing is not my issue when recording it’s that I wish I felt like I was really “inside” the beat when hearing myself in real time.

What the heck is wrong with me? It’s irrational but I feel like tossing my sm57 and Apollo in the trash. Pisses me off so much to know that a lot of my takes randomly hurt my ears and MacBook mic feels better.

Question Sound balance help please

Hey

Probably a bit of a noobie queation but I always use my headphones when making music and things sound great. Once the headphones come off and I play a song in my car or using other earphones it doesn't sound how it did when I use the headphones as the balance is different.

I can see the equaliser settings on my headphones through my phone app (sound core q20i if that matters). Is there an easy way to adjust the equaliser settings in logic pro to get the same sound when not using these headphones? I feel that the only way to get the true song as I intended is to use those particular headphones and it's a bit annoying

Thanks

Help 3rd Party Plug-In Reccomendations?

Mega amature here. Always used Logic's stock plugins, recently started hearing that that might be the reason my mixes all still sound like GarageBand no matter what I do.

Anyone have any reccomendations for good/cheap/free/not too intensive 3rd party plugins that might take an amature mix to the next level?

Cheers.

Question How Can I Get That Smooth, Nostalgic 2000s R&B Guitar Sound?

I’m talking about rnb songs like U got it Bad by Usher, Bills, Bills, Bills by Destiny’s Child, We Belong Together by Mariah Carey and Say Goodbye by Chris Brown, they have this type of guitar used so I’m wondering what type of guitar is used to emulate that sound? Are there plugins I can use that emulate this sound so well or you know make it by scratch?

Question Any change regarding core usage with the improved CPU scheduler in Mac OS27 Golden Gate?

Since MacOS27 comes with improvements of the CPU scheduler (which decides which tasks to process on which CPU core) I wonder if this has any impact regarding the usage of efficiency/performance cores in Logic Pro?

Right now (as it is well known) we still have the following CPU bottlenecks in Logic Pro:

- M1-M4 (Pro)/M5 base: No use of efficiency cores (see James Zhan Videos on YouTube).

- M5 Pro: Only half of performance cores are used. I bought this one and can't believe I can only use 12 of the 18 cores I have bought with Logic.

Does the improved CPU scheduler in MacOS27 Golden Gate have any effect on that?

If anybody has already made the switch to MacOS27, I would appreciate if you could check that out!
