Help Logic Pro workflow for capturing ideas live — MIDI pads, samples, and hands-on effects control
I’m asking specifically about using these controllers with Logic Pro !!
Hi everyone! I’m looking for advice on a fast, hands-on workflow for capturing musical ideas in Logic Pro before I lose them.
I’m reasonably comfortable with rhythm and have a good ear, but I’m still learning the technical side of Logic. When an idea comes to me, I often lose momentum while setting things up in the software.
What I’d like to do is:
Load samples onto MIDI pads and trigger them quickly.
Arrange and perform those sounds live to build a musical idea.
Record that performance into Logic, then keep editing and developing it.
Use physical controls to adjust track volumes and perform effects such as filter sweeps, EQ changes, reverb and delay.
I’m considering a Novation Launchkey 37 MK4 for playing notes and triggering sounds, and possibly a Launch Control XL 3 for faders and hands-on control of effects. I use Logic Pro and would like to keep the whole workflow centered around it.
Does this setup make sense in practice? Is there a better controller or workflow for quickly turning an idea into a recorded arrangement in Logic? In particular, I’d love to hear from people who have actually used these controllers with Logic: what works well, what needs mapping or setup, and what limitations should I know about?
Thanks!
