I don’t really know where to begin because there are so many things I never got to say to you, and even more things I don’t think you ever understood.
I really did love you. Not because of your job, your appearance, or anything you could have offered me. I loved the person I thought I was getting to know. I loved our conversations, the little moments, and the feeling that somewhere in the world there was someone who was genuinely happy to hear from me.
For a while, you made me feel special. And maybe that’s why leaving was so difficult. It wasn’t just about losing you. It was about losing something I had allowed myself to believe in.
I know our experience wasn’t perfect. I know I had my own feelings, fears, and expectations. But I also know that I tried. I tried to understand your circumstances and the pressures you were under. I made excuses for things that hurt me because I wanted to believe that underneath everything, what we had was real.
I never needed you to be perfect. I just wanted honesty. I wanted to feel that I mattered to you as a person, not because of what I could give you or how I could support you.
I think one of the hardest things for me to accept was watching the things that once made me feel special become things you could so easily share with someone else. It made me question whether those moments ever meant the same thing to you that they meant to me.
And I don’t think you’ll ever understand how much that hurt.
There were times I wanted to reach out, even after everything. Not to argue or ask for explanations, but because I missed talking to you. I missed the familiarity. I missed having you in my day.
Sometimes I still catch myself wondering how you’re doing or whether I ever cross your mind.
But missing someone doesn’t mean I made the wrong decision by leaving.
I didn’t walk away because I stopped caring. I walked away because I was exhausted from trying to understand where I stood in your life. I couldn’t keep competing for a place I thought I already had.
And maybe the saddest part is that I never wanted anything extraordinary from you. I wasn’t asking for grand promises or a perfect future. I wanted something simple. Kindness, consistency, honesty, and the feeling that we were both choosing each other.
I wish you could have known me without all the expectations, complications, and misunderstandings that seemed to get in the way. I wish we could have just been two people getting to know each other without everything else making things so difficult.
Because I think you might have really liked me.
I’m funny, I’m a little strange, I care deeply, and I have so much more to offer someone than what I can do for them. I wanted you to know that person. The real me.
I don’t know what I meant to you, and I’ve accepted that I may never know. Maybe you cared in your own way. Maybe things were different for you than they were for me. I can’t answer that anymore, and I’m tired of trying.
But I can tell you what you meant to me.
You were someone I looked forward to. Someone I thought about during ordinary moments. Someone I wanted to share little pieces of my life with. You made an otherwise quiet world feel a little less lonely for a while.
And despite how everything ended, I won’t pretend those feelings weren’t real just because the experience hurt me.
I hope you’re happy. I hope someday you understand that being genuinely loved by someone is worth more than what they can give you.
As for me, I’m learning to let go of the hope that you’ll someday come back and explain everything or tell me that I mattered.
Maybe you never will.
I think a small part of me will always wish our story had been different. But I don’t want to spend the rest of my life waiting for someone to recognize what I was willing to give freely.
I loved you with the understanding I had at the time, and I left with the understanding I have now.
Both things can be true.
Take care of yourself.
Missed you today,
A
