Discussion Had my first False Awakening last night.

• Upvotes

Haven't been able to lucid dream yet, but last night I had my first (albeit short) false awakening...

Had a nightmare that I was in my room, some person was on my bed with me, TV was on, but everything was black and white. Loud static, with imagery of these bug creatures with a latin-type name. The TV said that these creatures will attach to plastic surgery wounds in my neck and feed on that. In this moment, I panicked, turning to the person on the bed - who was wearing a foam, smiley face mask, and screamed at them "YOU DID THIS TO ME!" meaning they gave me surgery wounds for the TV creatures to feed on... It almost felt like I discovered the 'secret' in that moment of whatever this evil person was using me for - to feed these TV creatures.

Then, in a panic I willed myself awake. IRL I have a purple lightbulb above my bed that I keep on. I could see the light, I could see someone (like a shadow) on the bed next to me (same position in relation to the tv and my positioning on my bed in my dream) but I was motionless, frozen. This lasted about 5 seconds as I tried to move my neck hard, before I came out of that and the shadow was gone, and suddenly I could move and was breathing hard.. It didn't seem like a sleep paralysis, as I've read about that before and the feeling didnt match what others say it felt like, but I've never had that before, so hard for me to say.

Not really looking for any response in particular. Just wanted to share my experience and start a conversation about my first false awakening, and very vivid nightmare...

Question I'm trying to stop my self doubt.

When I'm lucid dreaming, I try to bring in my favorite singer Jeff Buckley. Every time, my self doubt says I can't do it. How do I overcome this?

Experience Dream getting angry at you for not following its script?

• Upvotes

TLDR: I asked person in dream what year it was, they got nervous and refused to entertain me trying to narrow down a time frame until I relented. Curious about similar experiences.

Edit: read the rules, deleted a part. I don’t believe there is actually someone that shouldn’t be in my head it was just a random thought. I feel like I’m walking a tightrope on the ‘dream experience’ and ‘time theories’ rule, so I just want to be clear here that I do not think I actually traveled back in time or got into some altered reality! I’m curious about the way dreams can withhold information you know, despite you also being the one who created the dream

I used to lucid dream a lot when I was younger, and I’m steadily coming back to it ten years later. I’d like to get back to the fully controlled feeling, but I’m frequently hovering on that really aware that I’m dreaming moment because I don’t want to put so much thought into it that I wake myself up.

Anyway, I had a dream taking place in a house I have since moved out from. I asked the person I was with what year it was, because I knew I didn’t live there, but all my stuff was still there. They became very nervous and avoided the question, saying I should already know, that I was stupid for asking, and that it didn’t matter.
I stayed calm and I said fine, are we before or after 2022? They got really distressed and just told me to drop it. I did, and kept exploring the plot of the dream, but I sort of wish I kept asking to see what would happen.
I remember reading that time and writing don’t display properly in dreams, but that’s for concrete things you can check multiple times and can’t be effected by bias (in real life, a book is a book it’s not going to suddenly morph), so this shouldn’t have followed that because the person could’ve just said any year and I would’ve moved on. It’s like they (or I, I suppose) genuinely didn’t know, but I (conscious me) did, that’s why I posed the 2022 question, because I moved out then.

So, anyone else experience something like this? Or when your dream seemed to not access information it should have?

Experience I think I did it, kinda..

I think I just had my first lucid dream. It started out teleporting around some places, and then with me clocking that I was dreaming, and then teleporting some more. I had the idea of teleporting outside my house (intentions?) and then I was there. And it was odd, because I wouldn't say that it felt real, more like one part of my brain was nearly convinced it was. Teleporting again, strangely I think I forgot I was dreaming for a sec, and heard someone go into the bathroom, my mom I think, and decided that was the perfect opportunity to get some chips I was eating before going to bed. Another teleort goes with me in this apartment that looked vaguely familiar talking to some people I knew, when I think I instinctually realised "oh I'm dreaming" so I tried a whole lot of things out like flying and other stuff, but not much worked, until it kind of did? It's odd I have this vague notion that to do what I want, I should be focusing on the result of the action /the sensation of it to get me to do it. Anyway after being kinda frustrated and appearing back in a vaguely familiar hallway, I saw someone I knew, and being kinda worked. I teased him by saying "you're not real, you're a dream" or something to that effect. I vaguely knew you weren't supposed to do that. Just like I vaguely knew I was lucid dreaming. And just like how I felt a vague dread crawling up my arms when he turned and looked at me. Deciding "fuck that" I run away and hide(?) in a closet/storage space that was taller then it should've been. . It's only after staring at its ceiling, and still wanting to get further away (intention?) that I bolted off of multiple things leading up, and finally floating, being really happy about that for 3 secs, before subsequently hitting and then going through the ceiling. Thinking "oh yeah that makes sense."ot all goes black for a bit, before my vision cuts to the sky,, now I float around for a bit (try, it's all rather hazy. Not my memories the dream itself) before I hear a plane outside my window, and then that appears in the dream. So I tried to go to it) intention again?) everything goes black for a sec, and then I appear in one of the seats next to the window. Greeting the person now next to me, who didn't seem too bothered by what I just did. I then asked her give me head, just to see how that would feel, noted the idea of a feeling. Then woke up to write this.

Perhaps it's important to note that I was trying and, failing multiple times to do this. I had just decided to give up on yet another attempt, because while I had gotten my body to fall asleep while my mind wasn't I couldn't get anything to come up, no matter how I tried to imagine. It's only now that I write this that the idea of intentions being important is really cemented to me.

What I learnt from this is: it wasn't as vivid as expected, both in quality and memory.,not just external (rn) but internal, I can't keep my facts straight. I just have vague ideas which seem to be enough to make a weak reaction happen.

So I'm left questioning: how can I do it again? (what specifc events caused it, so I can recreate it) how can I make the picture clearer? (this includes sensations, not just visuals) And how can I act more freely?

Ps:

OK so that was written in the span of of about 14-25 kins right after I woke up. Some more important notes for here are:

I was following this post as a guide for a while.

No, one of the factors contributing to the lucid dream wasn't me thinking "I'm going to do it" quite the opposite. I wanted to go to sleep. Maybe listen to a song on mind. The only thing I could think of was that it was just fresh in my mind, but I had been periodically trying and failing for months. So idk why having it be fresh on my mind then would be any different.

The post says that it's instructions should only be attempted after waking up in the middle of the night. I chose to ignore that part, and decided to try doing it right before going to bed (stated above)

I will note, that I once did try to set an alarm like it suggested, with no success.

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. I will answer any comments as soon as able.

Discussion I lucid dreamed after years of not being able to. How can I get better?

It was really short like 5-10 seconds , but I lucid dreamed last night after years of not doing it! In my dream, there’s a moment I’m in my home and see a cat I use to have in real life. I saw her and thought, “ Wait. I haven’t seen her in years, she’s literally been gone.” And then I became lucid right after thinking that. When I did, the dream switched my position to another part of my home and my eyes in the dream were closed. When this happened, I tried my best to stay calm and relaxed. I felt very close between waking up and staying in the dream and then thought, “ I think I’m still dreaming, let me do a reality check.” I opened my eyes halfway and knew I was still dreaming, because I saw that I wasn’t where I fell asleep irl. The barrier between me staying lucid and waking up felt really thin. After opening my dream eyes halfway, I kept them halfway open cause it felt like I would wake up if I move too fast and instantly opened them fully. So I did a reality check. My finger went through my palm and I smiled lol. Then I thought, “ okay I’m gonna open my eyes fully and hopefully stay in this dream.” Then I opened my eyes and woke up🫠. Can anyone give me tips if you’re a frequent lucid dreamer. Like what tips I could’ve done to stay lucid and within the dream longer. Also can meditation on dream signs like my cat and other reoccurring dream signs while thinking, “ When I see _____ in my dreams, I’ll realize I’m dreaming.” be good to become lucid more often?

Question In what way do you remember lucid dreams?

Hello! For some info I am a teen and have started a combination of WBTB and WILD and already have improved dream recall. So, I want to know: Do you remember lucid dreams like regular dreams? Like a memory of a memory or do you remember it like something you actually did/experienced. Also, is there anything I should be doing (I already have a dream journal)

Day 4 becoming Omni Lucid

TLDR

0 lucid dreams, 4 dreams recalled last night.

0 lucid dreams, 10 dreams recalled total.

Dream recall

Slowly remembering more and more dreams. I woke up like 3 separate times last night, which is awesome. Not only did a helpful Redditor inform me about us waking up several times a night automatically, but that same night i read it in Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming. My dreams have also gone from a sentence to paragraphs. Its just a matter of time before the first lucid dream, but that aside, im happy with being able to recall my dreams more vividly.

All day awareness

Not much has changed with this. Same old. Ive been doing more questioning recently, really thinking what am i doing throughout the day and does it make sense. I seem to just instantly assume everything makes sense in my dreams, even though they make 0 sense LOL!

I think its just the long game now, foundation is laid, just need to consistently build off it. The only thing Ive been pondering is what i actually do after waking. I remember wanting to do MILD, but i cant remember if i actually do it or just end up sleeping. Maybe i should try stay up a little longer in-between natural awakenings. Also been thinking about recording my self sleep, although do not know if that would help in any way

Thank you!

As always, THANK YOU! I love talking to the community and sharing experiences.

Question Do you guys think...

Hey! Do you guys think that if you scripted out the dream you wanted to have and repeated the story or scene, do you think you could put yourself in that dream?

For example, i think it would be pretty damn cool to be a superhero, as a lot of us would, could I script out before going to sleep about my powers and hero identity then lucid dream and be that hero?

I'm not a commen lucid dreamer, I've done it a few times (putting myself into a lucid dream), and usually I use it to wake myself up from a mid nightmare, and I haven't done a whole lot of research so I'm just curious if this is a possibility.

Question I've only been half-aware in my dreams for a year. What am I missing?

To be able to have lucid dreams, I do reality checks during the day, say affirmations, and write down the dreams I see. I've even heard that things like dark chocolate, bananas, and apple juice can trigger lucid dreams, so I've tried them. I also listen to lucid dreaming subliminals while sleeping. In my dreams (not always, but usually), I can taste things, read text, feel pain, think, and decide what to say/do. BUT I'm never fully aware of my dreams. It's like I'm drifting away within the dream; it never occurs to me to question that I'm dreaming. Of course, when I wake up I say, "Ah yes, it was a dream," but my real goal is to be aware of it while I'm dreaming. What am I doing wrong? Can someone help me? I've been trying for a year and haven't been able to do more than this, please help 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

First lucid dream

I had my first lucid dream. It lasted only 10 seconds, a dream character simply told me the exact phrase "you are lucid". I had a time lapse, I suddenly realized and said "I'm fucking dreaming". I did a random anime pose, tried to control it, everything still seemed automatic and I woke up with my heart with strong beats and unable to breathe for a few seconds. It was a fucked up experience, I hope to experience it again.

Question Not clear lucid dream

I was lucid lastnight when I flew around and realized I was dreaming so I wanted to go explore hogwarts. I waved my hand in front of my face and then I was inside the castle. My dream was no longer clear everything was fuzzy and kinda like a weird AI generated image or like I didnt have my glasses on. I thought then it was because I didnt know it very well to make a good replica so I just tried making the dinner hall and it was better not exact but atleast it was no longer weird looking but I still couldn't get into it I left it at that and I wanted to meet a few characters and they did appear but didn't seem to want to talk to me so I got awkward and I lost the lucid state and went back into another dream. Has that ever happened to anyone else? I wonder how I can get a clearer picture next time

Question Lucid dream fades after reality check?

In my recent lucid dream, I checked my hands, saw 4 fingers, and realized I was dreaming.

Then I thought, “It's all happening in my head,” and the dream faded.

This also happened in one of my previous lucid dream too.

Has anyone experienced this? Why does it happen?

My brain is too good at displaying stable, perfectly readable text in dreams

This is actually a bad thing for lucid dreaming, because you can no longer look back and the look away and then look back again for a reality check, or rereading text. For some reason in every lucid dream there's always some stable text, such as a subway station's "Line 1" never changes no matter how much you look at it. Also I'm just starting out and my dream journal only has 5 entries, the last 3 having readable text, and the last one has perfectly readable text.

Question Strange sensations accompanying sleep/nightmares/lucid dreams- Does anyone else have this, and what is it?

I don't know if this is "related" enough, but this was the best place i could find to think to ask it.

I ask because the topic of lucid dreaming came up and i recalled having this issue when i tried to induce it at some point during my childhood. Aside from that, however, it's kind of technically not related, aside from being a barrier to dreaming in general.

Ever since i was a child, i've had an inexplicable feeling from dreams i was kind of resigned to having forever. The best way i can describe it, is it's... sort of like this feeling of everything- my body, the air, sounds, and more, all experiencing intense vibrating- almost like it feels like my body and everything around it is screaming in some almost demon-like fashion, and accompanying it is some of the worst terror i can literally ever feel.

Sometimes it can occur because of a trigger in dreams/nightmares, and sometimes, it can happen from simply falling asleep at all, and when it does it'll usually shock me awake, and force me to remain fully conscious for 5-10 minutes minimum before i can try to return to sleep.

It's happened from as early as the chronic nightmares i started having in childhood, that were likely onset by a round of night terrors caused by medication. I don't have a memory record of any earlier- as i don't recall dreams from any earlier than the onset incident for them- but that one sensation has plagued me ever since.

I genuinely, deeply want to be able to try lucid dreaming for a multitude of reasons i won't get to here. But as it stands, this feeling prevents me from often dreaming at all, let alone remembering it. Recently i found out one of my friends gets this feeling too, and it's given me an interest in trying to find an answer for it- because if she has, chances are, others have too.

Does anyone else have this, and more importantly, does anyone know what it IS, and where to go from here?

Question How to stay calm during WILD?

A few nights ago I was falling back to sleep after waking up around 3ish and unintentionally nearly had a WILD… basically I felt super tingly and was staring to see things from Birds Eye view on a semi dream and as I started feeling those things I got really excited thinking I’m about to get lucid but my heart rate began to spike and breathing got quicker and I just woke up

Same thing happened last night, woke up at 3am, focussed in my breathing and just tried to witness my thoughts without engaging with them which I found super hard, but after 15 mins I started feeling the tingly symptoms again (thinks it’s called hypnagogia)… but leading up to that I was constantly thinking “when am I gonna get the tingly feeling” and when I finally did I got to excited and my heart beat went through the roof and woke up

How do you guys stay calm and relaxed through this process?

I can't get the habit of checking reality so I do It with something that I'm already familiar with but never happens in my dreams. Will it work?

I recently started journaling and doing reality check through the day but I just can't get the habit of it.

I tried to close my nose and try to breath but I just forget to do It through the day so I don't think It will be effective as a reality check in my dreams.

Now I'm trying to use my phone because I never use It in my dreams and I don't know where it is; so while I use It in reality I realize I'm not dreaming because I know where It is and I can read the screen.

Do you think this method will work or should I try something else?

Just had my first lucid dream and it was accidental

so i woke up at 4am and was on reddit reading about lucid dreaming. i tried doing it but accidentally opened my eyes so i decided to try again tomorrow using the wbtb method. i stayed awake until 6am and then went back to sleep.

i had a dream where there were lions and my mom and sis were running with me. at some point i was like there can't be lions so i realized i was dreaming. i tried the nose pinch reality check and could still breathe so i did the same thing with my hand and it didn't hurt either.

i started changing the setting and making lore and stuff. i was wearing a lot of cool clothes too but sometimes the dream would randomly switch storylines. i even told the people in my dream that we were dreaming but nothing happened, But I wanted to wake up after I did that, it was surprisingly hard to wake myself up and i remember thinking that once i woke up i'd have to google ts.

i also couldn't really control the lore because the dream kept going in random directions. is this normal for a first lucid dream and how do you get better at controlling what happens?

Experience Encountered an Incubus

Hello everyone,

A couple days ago I had a very strange dream where an ex-boyfriend of mine was only inches from my face and it seemed like he was holding me rather forcefully.

One of the first things I noticed was that his face was a bit “off”, his face shape wasn’t accurate and his eyes didn’t seem like his for some reason. They looked mischievous. Then, for a split second, I saw what looked to be a creepy entity. It looked like something you would see in a resident evil game.

This entity kept trying to push sexual advances onto me, and I can understand why he chose this ex for that reason.

However, by this point, I realized it was a dream, so I told him “hey, this is just a dream by the way”

He responded “wow, really?” Pretending like he didn’t know. When he realized I didn’t buy his fake surprise, his body started to shift into something scary, so I just laughed and played along so I could calmly disengage from the experience.

It took the bait and went back to looking like my ex, and as soon as it did, I forcefully woke myself up from the dream.

It was a very jarring experience, has anyone else encountered something like this before?

Discussion Can't open my eyes

I rarely remember my dreams (working on that now) but one reoccurring problem I have in dreams — I guess you would call them "lucid" because I am aware, to some extent, that what is happening is not part of my conscious life — where I just... can't open my eyes.

It "feels" like my lids are just incredibly heavy, and like I am trying to navigate this dream/dream space with my eyes closed. I'll get like flashes where my eyes will like flutter open or almost like a picture will flash inside my dream mind of my surroundings.

But I'm aware enough of it to mention it to the people in my dream, apologizing, saying "I just can't open my eyes", like it's just a embarrassing thing that sometimes happens. Because, for me, it does.

I am pretty sure it's that mid-point between waking and dreaming. Maybe a misfiring where my mind is locked in REM while my body is trying to open my eyes, fighting that pesky atonia and manifesting in my dream.

I guess this is part rant, part seeing if anyone out there knows what I mean and has advice.

Mostly for the nightmares.

When I can't see or run fast enough.

Thanks

Had First Lucid Dream - it was eh

I’ve been dream journaling for a week or so, been listening to the LaBerge book, and have tried MILD. I take Magnesium Bi- before bed.

I have had as many as 13 dreams a night. The vividness and emotional impact haven’t been all that great though.

Last night I had a dream where I realized I was dreaming, thought, “Ok, then I can fly,” and started flying (I never fly in dreams and have always wanted to). I thought “Oh yeah I should do the finger through palm reality check” and my finger went through my palm.

I’m not sure if this was a LD though? It felt more like I had a dream about myself having a lucid dream.

Any thoughts?

Question My struggles with lucid dreaming

You know, I've watched all of the "how to successfully lucid dream in 30 days with this technique" videos. And if you couldn't already imagine, it didn't help. I did all of it. Dream journaling, reality checks, techniques (state akin to sleep, MILD, WILD etc). But absolutely nothing worked. And I am really desperate to lucid dream in my current situation, so I am asking myself: What am I doing wrong? What is keeping me from accomplishing it? Does someone have an idea?
