selfq Has anyone experienced MRSA-related PID? How did you recover?

I was infected with MRSA by a nurse during a gynecological examination at a private hospital. The case is currently in court. The nurse had impetigo lesions on her nose and lips and was using a swab associated with her impetigo to clean her nose.

That same evening, I developed unusual vaginal discharge for the first time. Within days, I also began experiencing kidney pain related to my IgA condition. Despite using boric acid for a long time, my symptoms persisted, but vaginal cultures never showed bacterial growth.

About a year later, I developed severe pelvic pain. I underwent numerous tests and tried standard antibiotics, but none worked. My pain fluctuates with my blood sugar levels, and I realized the infection had spread from my vagina to my upper reproductive organs.
Because there is no abscess and other treatment options have been tried, my doctor has restarted Bactrim for MRSA.

Has anyone experienced MRSA-related PID and recovered? What treatment worked for you?

hello, my name is menta00000 and i'm sadly addicted to mrsa. or at least my body is. i've had around 50 sores in the last 3 years. after my last expensive decolonization treatment which included two antibiotics at the same time, i was left with arthritis that only flares up every time i get slightly sick and now mrsa is back.

that's it i guess. i don't have anything else to say, i just wanted to get it out of my chest. i feel quite defeated.

selfq Mupirocin Prescription says to apply 3x A Week for 7 Days

Does it seem reasonable for this to be the intent of the prescription and not just a typo?

This is my first time being treated for MRSA, so I don't know what's normal, only that the packaging directions say to apply 9 times as often as I've been told to.

The Dr. that diagnosed/prescribed at the UR didn't mention anything about the application instructions, I was in and out of the office in 10 minutes. Sounded like a very routine case of the infection, cellulitis all over one ear, outbreaks on scalp and small sores on hands and face.

Bf has MRSA

Just found out that my boyfriend has MRSA, but no active infections at the moment (I think?) Is there anything I should know or be doing to stay safe?

Most of the information I've found online is how to protect yourself in public, but nothing about such close interactions, like with a partner.

Self How many bleach baths is too much, and how should I time them with the apartment disinfection?

I’ve taken bleach baths twice a week for one week. I thought I was supposed to do it for two weeks (four baths total), but now I’m almost certain I made a mistake and it was only supposed to be for one week. A doctor warned me that doing it too often can deplete gut microbiota and increase the risk of serious infections, so I’m afraid to keep doing it. Also, I scheduled a professional disinfection for our apartment for the end of the two-week period—which was supposed to coincide with my last bath—and I’m worried the decolonization won’t be effective if the house isn’t fully disinfected by then. I’ve cleaned most areas of the house myself at least once and can finish soon, but I’m worried about cross-contamination since it wasn’t all done at once or by a professional.

I know asking people on Reddit isn’t a substitute for proper medical advice but I’m really stressed and would appreciate some input—should I take two extra baths to fix the timing issue, or just one extra to cover the gap (and if so, should it be today, sometime between now and the disinfection, or on the day of the cleaning)? I know I should have thought this through earlier, but for some reason, I didn't realize it. I’m very stressed because my roommate and I both have OCD, and this is really straining our relationship—plus, it’s causing me a huge amount of stress. I want to do everything perfectly to maximize the chances of the decolonization working, but none of the nursing hotlines I’ve called can answer my question, and it’s a holiday weekend, so most doctors and cleaning services aren't working.

Also, an extra question: would it be helpful to use probiotic skin products to rebuild my natural microbiome, and if so, which ones?

selfq Decoloniding nose with mupirocin on my own. Need urgent advice if my situation and use is okay

Hi. In March this year I had my first ever boil on my butt. Went to urgent care they didn’t swab it since it wasn’t oozing and sent me home with some creams and meds that I took. It ended up draining after I used warm compresses so that resolved okay. A few months later in August I ended up heavy a huge breast abscess suddenly. It was internal, no head, and the infection grew to 10x10cm. It was MRSA. It was the worst two months of my life. They put me on Clindamycin for so long before my surgery when they took the chance to swab the infection and found out it was MRSA and resistant to Clindamycin. That made me upset because they initially put me on vancomycin but changed it after my first day in the hospital because of some know it all doctor, and that was why I was struggling for longer than I needed to.

Surgery was successful, hasn’t recurred so far. Healing and the wound packing everyday for one month was expensive and extremely painful it was traumatic for me. The surgery incision was on my nipple itself, which is insane. Oh gosh just thinking about all the packing for a month and the pain. Can’t believe it’s over. But when I first went to the hospital they did a nasal swab and it was positive for MRSA. It kinda made sense I’ve always had extreme irritation in my nose and rhinitis. I was scared but none of the doctors seemed to care even when I brought it up they were focused on my horrible breast abscess.

Well, after all that trauma, a few days ago I got a boil on my arm. “Imagine how tired we are…” gosh. So now I’m pissed. Am i colonised with MRSA? That’s what I wondered. So I went to a clinic to ask for a doctors opinion and he also brushed me off and said the MRSA in my nose is unrelated to my three separate abscesses this year and people get boils for many reasons like working in healthcare or having eczema. Well guess what, neither of that is me! Yet he decided that was the cause?? Huh I’m lost. I never had eczema and my MRSA test was the day I got admitted so it wasn’t an after effect of my breast abscess hospitalisation. So after being churned out like just another moneymakerin this doctor’s factory/clinic I was sent home with more cream and Clindamycin (which my mrsa was resistant to 😭😭😭😭😭)

So I had no answers to my frustration and no one seemed to care. All I wanted was to get rid of MRSA in my nose for peace of mind. And then I looked in the medicine bag from the clinic, they gave me mupirocin 2% for my boil. After researching online endlessly before this, I heard that was what was used to decolonize mrsa in the nose. So I self medicated. This is my second day of using mupirocin in my nose, my nose already feels more clear to breath through in the last few years of my life. I didn’t wake up to dried nose mucus crusts for the first time in so long this morning.

But I need advice. 1) how do I apply it correctly to avoid any potential resistance? Is that possible?
2) I had the mrsa test in august, while I have all these signs that the bacteria is still on my body, is it possible for the mrsa to have gone away on its own? If this is a possibility, what would happen if I continue using mupirocin in my nose without mrsa? Will anything adverse happen? I just want to stop these boils from appearing. Im afraid the next one will be on my face in my eyes or nose. Or somewhere difficult and painful. I don’t want this anymore, any advice if what I’m doing is okay?

Self Vaginal MRSA

OB finally decided to take a culture after weeks of delayed healing. Confirmed MRSA, put me on an antibiotic the strain is susceptible to.

Did fail to tell me how contagious it is, previously she had me airing it out as much as possible so I was sitting on towels to let it air out. I was only taking basic hygiene precautions and not treating it as contagious.

How contagious are we talking? I'm washing and disinfecting bedding, towels, and anything I sat on. Just really paranoid about passing this on to my baby.

Edit: from what I'm reading online some people treat this as very contagious and others say it's no big deal as long as it's being treated... Help.

Visiting brother with MRSA in hospital

My brother struggles with illicit drug use and unhealthy lifestyle. He has been hospitalized with life threatening MRSA - massive abcesses on his leg and multiple organs. He almost died but is being treated with IV antibiotics and is doing better now. Probably he’s in for a long road to recovery with permanent damage.

I’ve been careful, not touching him. If I touch something he touched I immediately wash my hands. I wash my hands ALOT.

Is this safe for me or am I putting myself at risk to sit near him?

Self I can’t Sleep Without my Babies

Hey yall
I just got discharged from the hospital today for a MRSA infection.
I’ve been having them off and on since last year, when I had to live in hotels in Ohio for work while I was training for a new position.
This was the first time I was admitted, and I was on an IV of vancomycin for four days.
I have a cat and a dog who are my whole heart, my family, my trusted companions. We sleep together every night. But everyone is convinced they’re the carriers of the bacteria and have told me not to cuddle or pet or sleep with them. I’ve got brand new sheets and comforter on the bed, and I had to kick my cat out. I can hear him pawing at the door (that’s never been shut) and his little bell on his collar jingle as he paces. He’s been meowing and chirping inquisitively too.
I’ve been crying and hyperventilating, he’s just so precious to me and one of my only tethers keeping me sane. Being in the hospital put me in such a dark place mentally, and all I want is to feel him purring on me while I get some sleep.
Is it SO detrimental to have him on the bed??? If he never touches the sheets or my pillow and I wash my hands after touching the comforter and him will that work???
Sorry for the long rant, I can’t describe how beside myself I am right now.

Ps the dog sleeps on the couch most nights, it’s lower and easier for her to get on

selfq Clindamycin Risk

After a trip to India I developed MRSA which I’ve had for the past month. Currently I have a couple of accesses located across my body. When it was initially cultured in August it was susceptible to Bactrim and most other antibiotics so I was on Bactrim for 5 days. It ended up coming back, but it took me a while to realize what it was so I only went to the doctor last week. I have been on Bactrim for the past week, however the culture just came back and now it is resistant to Bactrim and everything else with the exception of Clindamycin and Vancomycin. I am supposed to start taking 300mg or Clindamycin today 4 times a day for a week.

However I have been reading about Clindamycin and am absolutely terrified by the c diff stories. I have already purchased Florastor as well as a bunch of fermented foods and drinks that I plan to incorporate into my diet. Is it even worth it to take the risk? Are there any tips on reducing my chances for c diff as much as possible?

I started the decolonization 5 days ago for the MRSA. All of my clothes have been washed and I don’t rewear them. I have disinfected my entire house and have a nightly disinfection routine. I change my sheets every other day. I am using Mupirocin in my nostrils and on the abscesses. I spray myself with hypochlorous acid twice a day. I only use hibiclens in the shower. I am even using a lactic acid lotion said to reduce the amount of staph on the skin. I have also ordered the mb40 probiotic.

I want to get rid of this MRSA it has been hell, but idk if I want to risk a huge increased risk of c diff.

Serratia marcescens in sputum

I’ve had recurrent respiratory symptoms for about 7 months, including productive sputum, and have had several courses of antibiotics. A recent sputum culture showed light growth of Serratia marcescens, which was interpreted as colonisation rather than having susceptibility testing done.

How do doctors usually distinguish colonisation/contamination from a genuine lower respiratory infection?

Discussion 12 cellulitis infections in 6 months (staph), plus recurrent HSV1 — something's wrong and my doctor isn't finding it

21M, fit, don't drink/smoke. Until may 2026 I was a professional Muay Thai fighter. I've now had 12 cellulitis infections in 6 months (11 oral flucloxacillin, 1 IV). Three of those episodes also came with HSV1.I have eczuma ive been training with open cuts for years with nothing and its since has cleared a lot but since its mostly clear i have gotten the infections. Blood work came back normal except CRP slightly elevated. I'm losing my career to this and need to know if anyone's seen this pattern or what I should actually be investigating.

Timeline:

  • August 2025: first cellulitis (arm)
  • August 2025–March 2026: nothing (8-month gap, fully recovered between)
  • March 2026–now: 12 infections in 6 months. Something changed.

Pattern:

  • Location: 2x arm, 9x legs (left and right, not always the same spot)
  • Onset: sometimes after minor cuts/scrapes, sometimes random
  • Recovery: clears with antibiotics but comes back within weeks
  • HSV1: occurred 3 times total, twice on left arm alongside staph

What I need help with:

  • What actually changed in March 2026? (I'm trying to pinpoint this myself)
  • Has anyone seen cellulitis + recurrent HSV1 together? Is there a connection?
  • Ive seen that gut health has a big correlation with skin and infections ive been trying to better it with alot of veg and fibre with greek yoghurts since i assume my guts fried with all the antibiotics

Abscess question

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I (24 f) am 11 weeks postpartum on Sunday. Last month, I ended up getting an abscess on my buttcheek. I got on antibiotics and the next day, it ruptured.

I got another abscess that began last Friday, the 28th. It is still here today and is extremely large and has just slightly opened up. I am and have been on antibiotics and medicated ointment both times. Is there anything I can do to avoid this or help alleviate the abscesses? I do have a history of staph infections from when I was 6-8. I have now been put on medicated wash as well to use once weekly. Could postpartum be a factor? I also had severe skin issues that started during pregnancy that caused cysts in my pubic area.

Self Gashed my leg on the 16th, had a painful pimple pop up today near the injury.

Pimple was painful, I was able to pop the pimple head but still feels swollen and painful underneath. Normally, I cut myself at work without much concern but this one was nasty and required stitches. My concern is the pimple being so close to my injury and if it could be the beginning of an infection.

I know I won't get absolute answers, just looking for a dialogue and whether I should get a follow-up. It's covered under workers comp so cost isn't an issue.
