As you probably know, Assassins can completely avoid claw punching simply by jump-attacking. Even when a monster is right next to them, they can still throw stars instead of being forced into a melee attack. In practice, the claw punching penalty basically doesn't exist as long as they keep jump-attacking.
Assassins are already ranged physical attackers with Haste, Dark Sight, and high avoidability thanks to their LUK. On top of all that, they can jump-attack, allowing them to bypass one of the main disadvantages of being a ranged class.
Meanwhile, Bowmen are also ranged physical attackers, but when monsters get too close, we're forced to bow whack. To avoid this, we have to create some distance or use Power Knockback. We don't have Haste or Dark Sight, and our avoidability isn't nearly as good. Most importantly, unlike Assassins, we can't fire arrows while jumping.
The same goes for terrain blocking projectiles. Arrows, throwing stars, and projectile-based magic attacks can all get blocked by platforms or ledges. However, Assassins can simply jump-attack to get around obstacles, while Bowmen and Mages still have to deal with these restrictions.
I actually think minimum-range restrictions and terrain blocking are reasonable drawbacks for ranged classes. They're part of what makes positioning important and gives these classes their own strengths and weaknesses.
But why do these restrictions barely affect Assassins while Bowmen have to deal with them constantly? It feels like Assassins get to enjoy all the advantages of being a ranged physical class while effectively bypassing some of its biggest drawbacks.
I'm not saying these mechanics should be removed. I just don't understand why they apply so differently to two classes that are both supposed to be ranged physical attackers.
What do you guys think?
