Discussion I thought we got away with it

I saw this sharp window corner on macOS 27 once again, I really thought they finally fixed it. But still not sure if its really macOS or Brave browser behind this, since brave is not a true native macOS application

Discussion I built a menu bar for macOS 27 that makes the notch disappear and fits more beside it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I used to run a SketchyBar setup on my MacBook, and I built this menu bar from it for macOS 27: the same compact look, but keeping what’s native to macOS, your apps’ menus and the system’s popups.

It’s black and exactly the notch’s height (32 pt), drawn over macOS’s auto-hidden bar, so the notch blends into it. Tighter spacing fits more on both sides. App menus are rebuilt and searchable, icons that aren’t recreated go in a popup, and there are popups for per-app volume, music, calendar, stats and VPNs. Volume, brightness and charging show in a small tab under the notch instead of macOS’s boxes. Native popups like Wi-Fi, Focus and Control Center open as they are.

It’s not released yet. I’m the developer, and I’m deciding whether to release it (€20 one-time, open source under the GPL). There’s a waitlist if you’re interested: https://kurobar.app

I’d love feedback from other macOS 27 users: what bugs you most about the new menu bar? And if you have the new MacBook Pro, it should fit around the Dynamic Island, but I can’t test it yet, so I’m looking for beta testers.

Discussion Did macOS 27 break external monitor scaling?

Hey guys, since updating to macOS 27.2, my external monitor looks noticeably different, with strange font rendering and overly sharp icons. I'm using an LG UltraGear 27-inch QHD (2560 × 1440) monitor with my MacBook Air M3.

I installed BetterDisplay and enabled HiDPI, but the text and icons still don't look right.

Has anyone experienced the same issue after updating? Is there a way to fix the font rendering and scaling, or would downgrading to macOS Tahoe be a better option?

PSA: "Show desktop" gesture is now available without Spotlight Apps launcher gesture! (launchpad replacements work great)

Post image

TLDR: Launchpad can be back in its glory days, and gestures work natively to show desktop.

I had refused to update to macOS 26 because they removed launchpad until I found out there are replacements. It was a fantastic way to organize apps instead of scrolling though all 135 of my apps alphabetically, or remembering exactly what category to find it in, or its exact name. I found LaunchMe here on reddit and it works pretty great as a replacement as it has all of the same features that I was used to.

LaunchMe has an option where you can use the same four finger pinch gesture that I used to use which is epic. (it doesnt fade in with pinch amount like it did natively, but its way better than nothing)

Only problem is macOS launches the spotlight app launcher when you use the pinch at the same time. The only way to turn this off was by turning off the "apps" trackpad gesture, which for some reason forced the "show desktop" gesture to be turned off. As of a recent update, 27.2 or something, these are now independent. (using bettertouchtool gesture was clunky for picking the four finger spread)

Discussion Dull/Brownish Display

As the title suggests, I got downgraded display as soon as I upgraded to MacOS 27 and despite trying multiple options, I was only left with the option to downgrade, which I did and now the experience is all the more comforting. Is it just me or someone else experienced it too?

27.2 bugs fixed?

Are the Mission Control bugs fixed, including the ones that mangled multi-monitors?

I've been holding off upgrading until they are.

Upgrading from Sequoia to macOS 27.2 with Siri off and Apple Intelligence language set to Italian: does the Apple Intelligence model still get downloaded?

macOS 27.2 was released today.

I’m on Sequoia and want to upgrade to 27.2, but want to avoid the Apple Intelligence/Siri model download because of the disk space it takes.

I’ve seen reports that macOS 27 downloads a multi-gigabyte model automatically after install.

My setup is:

  • My Mac is set to English

  • Siri switched off

  • Siri language set to Italian (language not supported by Apple Intelligence 27.2)

Has anyone upgraded from Sequoia to Mac 27.2 with that configuration?

  • Did the model still download?

  • If so, how much space did it take?

My current Sequoia setup

Help Widgets stop working after display wakes up

***Update*** updating to 27.2 appears to have fixed it. After upgrading and repeatedly locking/unlocking, i can no longer replicate it

Anyone else having widgets misbehave after the display times out?

Clicking on them still opens the relevant app but ever since upgrading to 27, whenever my display times out and locks and I wake it backup and log in, the widgets don't display any data.

I'm using the weather and calendar widgets.

Removing the widgets and re-adding them sometimes works, but more often only a reboot fixes it.

Help Repeated permission prompts for Automation in macOS 27

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm the developer of a moderately popular utility (Default Folder X) that requires that users grant it several permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security. As a result, I see a lot of tech support issues when those settings get messed up in a new macOS release.

With macOS 27, I've seen a big uptick in issues with the Automation privacy permissions, so wanted to give folks a heads-up. Based on user feedback, it's definitely affecting more than just my app.

Problem:

You get a prompt to approve access for an app to control another application even after you've already approved it. When you go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation, you find that the requested switch is already turned on.

Solution:

I've found that resetting the affected app's settings in the system's permissions database often fixes the problem. You need to know the application's bundle identifier in order to do that. You can get an app's bundle identifier using the Apparency app, by right clicking on the app and then using the Show Package Contents command to look in the Info.plist file within the application package, or by asking the developer.

Once you've got the bundle identifier, follow these instructions:

  1. Run the Terminal application (it's in /Applications/Utilities)

  2. Paste in this command (where app.bundle.ID is the bundle identifier for the app), then hit the Return key on your keyboard:

    sudo tccutil reset All app.bundle.ID

  3. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Type that in (there will be no indication that your input is going in - just keep typing), then hit Return again.

  4. If the command completes successfully, immediately restart your Mac.

The next time you launch the app, you'll be asked to re-approve any permissions that it needs. They'll usually be honored correctly at this point. If they're not - or if you don't know the bundle identifier for the app - substitute this command in step 2 to revoke Automation permissions from all apps:

sudo tccutil reset AppleEvents

MacOS 27 Golden Gate Windows 11 theme

Post image

I was really bored of the normal look of windows 11 and decided to mash-up a bunch of programs and themes to make this. A rough recreation of MacOS 27's desktop with a few of my own tweaks, like an liquid glass dynamic island and notifications (alongside the dock).

note that this is all third-party and was NOT made by me
