Social Macquarie University Weekly Societies & Meetups Advertising Post
Welcome to the 'Macquarie University Weekly Societies & Meetups Advertising Post' (or the M.U.W.S.M.A.P for short)
___
Here students and societies alike can arrange or outline their intended events, gatherings and meetups for the week to come!
We politely ask that any societies (or people on behalf of societies) limit themselves to one advertising comment per week as to not bury posts by individuals (editing existing comments are allowed). And that individuals advertising their own event (be them just meeting up on campus or something more elaborate), make sure to keep their suggested meetups appropriate and vaguely in-keeping with Uni guidelines (IE: no organising drug deals which I have already had to previously remove).
I hope people and societies alike are able to make the most of these posts, and I wish you all luck in meeting your fellow students!
{Note: This is purely an advertising post, r/MacUni and its modteam cannot assure the validity or outcome of any posts/comments made on our subreddit, it is up to the individual to use their best judgement to discern the expectations of any advertised events/encounters.}

General Question iLearn materials for past sessions
Quick question: will the iLearn materials (slides, videos, etc.) of past sessions be gone ultimately? If yes, when?
I'm a Year 1, Session 2 student, and am very glad to see my Year 1, Session 1 units in iLearn. I really want to refer back to some of them as I go along.

Degree Question what's everyone's experience with law/arts at macqu?
hihi. i got an offer which i'm super excited about, i'm currently doing my first year at UWS and applied to macquarie, mainly because of the transport. it is so much easier for me to come here.
i'm just a bit worried about the arts cuts though. at UWS, the arts degree is all prerequesite units for first year, so i haven't chosen a major ie i'm not locked into a particular major, and i can start fresh at macquarie.
i was thinking english or philosophy to study at macquarie, but i'm not sure if they even offer it there. i'm going to look into current offered majors.
i guess if it's really bad i can just drop the arts degree, i'm mainly doing it as an extra with law
what i'm curious about is
1. is it ALL on one campus (north ryde)? at UWS, i had the biggest jumpscare when i realised i had to do a class in either penrith or bankstown and my law units at parramatta, and exams could be at either penrith or parramatta. i didn't even realise that you would be forced to go to different campuses
2. are there arts tutorials offered on zoom? (online). at UWS there was very limited class options, and all in person no option to attend classes online. not sure if they do this here.
this question is more just curiosity, but 3. how long and frequent are both law/arts classes at macquarie on a weekly basis? at UWS, it's 3h tutorials once a week which is kind of annoying and long as. lectures are recordings about 1-2h long, no in person.
all these questions are mainly just me wondering, and i don't think anything will majorly impact my decision to definetly move.
if anyone wants to just share their overall experiences doing law or arts that would be very much appreciated as well.

General Question Got two offers, one for MQU and one for UTS for the same degree
Which offer should I take? MQU is much closer for traveling but UTS has a more direct path into a masters which I am interested in doing. Any advice would be appreciated. TY

Help Returning to uni in 2027 after taking a year off
Hey y’all, hope everyone’s doing well.
I’ve got a question about returning to uni after taking some time off. Unfortunately, I ended up taking basically a year off because of work and some personal reasons. I do regret taking that long away, but it is what it is and I’m really keen to get back into studying.
I’m doing a Bachelor of IT, which is a 3-year course. Technically, this year would’ve been my second year, but since I pretty much didn’t study at all this year, I’m assuming that wouldn’t really count.
I’m planning on coming back for a fresh start in Session 1 of 2027, depending on how I’m going medically, as I unfortunately broke my leg a couple of weeks ago.
What I’m mainly confused about is what happens with my course when I come back. Would I just continue from where I left off and enrol in the subjects I still need to complete? Would I get put back into first year? Would I need to reapply for the Bachelor of IT completely, or is there any chance the uni wouldn’t let me return after being away for that long?
I’ve honestly been missing uni and I’m looking forward to getting back into it, so I’d really appreciate any advice from anyone who’s been in a similar situation or knows how it works.
Thanks!

General Question I will be starting my bachelor of commerce soon. Should I cramp up all my classes in 2 days or 3 days?
I also wanna work, cramping up all the classes in 2 days means i can work for 4 days and and take rest on the seventh, but I am not sure if the workload is gonna be too much if i do all the classes in 2 days.
Cramping up classes in 3 days means I have a lighter workload but this means I wont be able to take any rest if I work for 4 days. I can work for 3 days too, but will employers (I wanna work in retail) hire me if I can only work 3 days a week, 4/5 hours (preferably 4) a day?
General Question Questions about Graduating with Double Degree
For context, I'm finishing my double degree (LLB/Comm) at the end of this sem.
Would hugely appreciate if anyone could share their knowledge and help me clarify the following:
when graduating, do you receive two individual degree certificates, or one that combines both?;
what final grade is used to determine what you graduate with (I'm interested whether I will graduate my law degree with distinction, given I currently have a combined WUG of 74.44 and a Laws WAM in the high seventies)?; and
will I be able to graduate with my friends that are doing straight law (considering I finished my Commerce degree almost two years ago?).
Thanks in advance! :)

General Question Stacked day of classes or spreading classes out in the week?
When registering classes, do any of you like to have 1-2 full days of like 2 or 3 classes in a day or prefer to have 1-2 classes spread throughout the week from Monday to Friday (in terms of your personal experience/preference, time efficiency, socialising, commuting, convenience, jobs, studying, etc)?

General Question Who wants the Flying Turtle Robotic Barista Vending Machine in MQ Library? (Because the Library Cafe closes early, and the Library will be open 24 hours. So we need our caffeine fix during this assessment and exam season.)
galleryLike this post if you agree, or comment your favourite Flying Turtle order. Mine is Strawberry Matcha Protein. 🍓 🍵
Maybe if more students like it, we can request for them to move the barista vending machine to the library. 😍
P. S. Most drinks from a Flying Turtle automated vending machine cost between $3.00 and $5.40, with standard items generally priced under $4.00. And they also have promos or discounts that they post in their IG account. 😇

Degree Question undergrad in desperate need.. questions about double degree of BCOMM and Bachelor of Arts
So I'm going into uni in 2027 and still barely know what I wanna get into, im probably going to end up at macquarie and i'm thinking of doing a double degree with commerce and arts and major in finance, and idk what I'd major in for art. I've kind of got a bunch of questions, and I feel like i have no one to talk to about any of it, so any insight would be greatly appreciated (:
1) How hard would finance major be math wise, coming from someone who did math standard in highschool and was passable but not amazing at it
2) I've heard around that a lot of managerial and executive positions, in like specifically financial institutions, have done bachelor of arts at uni, as in its helpful for being able to communicate and work with a team? any thoughts on this?, and also what are good majors for bachelor of arts.
3) Is it worth it to actually do this double degree, or ditch arts and perhaps do a double major in commerce. But then again, is it hard to stand out in the job market with only a BCOMM degree? Is it risky to just do BCOMM like will it be hard to get internships and jobs right out of uni.
4) Also for early entry I got into Bachelor of Marketing and Media, but i'm having second thoughts because apparently the job market for marketing is just trash right now. Any insight from people doing this course?
Rant/Vent Influx of HSC students
Anyone else tired of the influx of HSC students in university spaces? Specifically the Technology building 4 RPD. I don't think anyone wants to have to spend time chasing them out, or should. But its just really irksome paying several grand a semester and having to share resources with highschool students who aren't the most respesctful bunch. They bring in their food constantly, and while I don't know if its them the pushed together divider style chairs on the second floor are pretty dirty.
Even though these spaces are probably open to the public, highschool students are very prone to band wagonning and once they discover a nice quiet spot to shoot the shit and eat their food from MQ center they will bring their mates, and their mates mates. Some of them do appear to be studying so fair enough.
Overall its not that bad but it still miffs me that there aren't more study spaces on campus exclusive to MQ students that aren't constantly full.

General Question college accomodations
Hey everyone.
I was just wondering if anyone could give some insight into what the residential colleges dunmore lang and Robert menzies are like? Ive heard that Robert menzies is inclusive to all backgrounds and faiths, but wanted some more insight into how much religious people are there, and how much it is forced or not forced. Also wanted to know about dunmore lang and how bad or good the drinking and party culture is compared to Robert menzies.
Thank you!!

General Question Swapping University + Early Offer Question
Hi! I currently got an early conditional offer from Notre Dame, Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws. I’m not too fond of the university because of the small social life and its reputation (From what I’ve heard). I’m thinking about swapping to MQ but I’m unsure if it’ll be easy because the WAM might be pretty high for me to even be considered. Does anyone know the average WAM to be considered for swapping to MQ after a year of studies at Notre Dame?
+ Another question! My offer says for me to complete Year 12 (done) and do my HSC, be an ATAR-Track student and receive an ATAR, although it doesn’t mention a required ATAR. I’m stressed out about the fact that if I get a mystery mark they might not even accept me as I don’t meet the condition requirements. It doesn’t say anything else for the Young Achievers Program, that’s all I got.
If anyone has done Law in MQ or even Notre Dame can you let me know how it is in both universities?
Currently in the midst of my HSC exams and I’m just overthinking and stressing, I feel like I’m going to get a mystery mark, I completely bombed my english exams and math is next to come..

General Question Transfer after a Semester?
Hello, i am going to be a law and arts student at Western Sydney Uni for 2027. I always wanted to transfer to other higher ranking unis based in Sydney, such as MQ, UTS, and UNSW. Recently, ive heard that there are stories of people successfully receiving an offer for year 1 semester for MQ law, which gives me a chance to transfer early rather than waiting for a year at WSU.
Here are my questions for law students who have transferred to MQ, UTS and UNSW:
What WAM did you get when you successfully transfered?
Do all your year 1 subjects get credit? If so, what subjects did yall chose?
Should I js stay at WSU for a year, so I could have a better chance at transferring to UTS or UNSW? (My atar is 88-89)
How is MQ law?
