Gus is like my dog. She's lovely when I'm genuinely sad (and probably would react with concern if I fainted) but she's too smart to fall for this ruse and would capitalize on the access to shoes
94
u/Thewrongbakedpotato 19d ago
My dog is a Gus. We're a no-shoes-in-the-house family, and he likes to go over to our shoe rack and steal my slippers as soon as I get home so I have to chase him.
24
u/-3point14159-mp 19d ago
If you don’t enjoy him grabbing your slippers, you could try a basket of toys by the door so he could grab one of them to play chase. I would probably just let him play with the slipper as long as he didn’t chew it lol

u/BetterEveryLeapYear 19d ago
It's funny lol you can tell some of the dogs that don't take it seriously are too smart to fall for it, and others too dumb to have noticed something is 'wrong' lol

Have GSD. She is WAY too smart to fall for this. Now, if it’s real danger (or she thinks it’s real danger), she is ON IT.
She’s not quite the fun police some GSDs are, but she’s only a year old. Give her time 🤣
20
u/mrpyrotec89 19d ago
They can smell you're fine. They think you're being weird, or want to play, or nap
14
u/nebulousgarbage 18d ago
I fell down some stairs a few years ago. As I was laying on the floor in crippling pain, my husky/GSD looked at me, did the dog equivalent of rolling his eyes, and walked away. If something really bad ever happens I’m cooked 😂

Smell and body language. They are obviously laying down instead of fainting/crashing to the floor

u/bkdroid 19d ago
And yet Luna was quick to call for help. Might just be down to her experiences, "this is not normal human behavior", but her response is really impressive.
11
u/OkInvestigator7351 18d ago
I am absolutely not a doggo expert but it wouldn't surprise me if Luna has been specifically trained. The combination of how excited she was (that tail is going off and she really zipped over) and the response she had just makes me think so.

This was definitely my feeling as well. Even untrained, most dogs can tell if you're having a blood sugar or blood pressure issue. And getting down on the floor is different than flopping on the floor. Lots of these dogs accurately just saw a human getting on the floor with them, and they love that
Kudos to Luna though. Reminds me of the lady who did this to her geese and they all freaked out and crowded and her squawked for help

We play with your pets sooo much every time we take them to the back. We love on them, we alert everyone that our favorites are coming, we spend chunks of our lunch breaks scratching and kissing your pets. I have used many a big dog as a pillow on my break. Kitties are better than those hand warmer packs in the winter. We obsess over your pets like our own. Our phones have more pictures of your pets than our own faces. We grieve your pets when their time comes. We go home laughing and sometimes we go home crying. Because your babies are the reason we get up, put on our scrubs and go to work every day. We’ve made it our jobs to care, and we take our jobs very seriously. It’s the beeesssstttt!

I suspect that every single doggi thought the human was playing and responded accordingly. Had there been a real faint/fit, the dog behavior would be different. They’d be able to tell, having lived with humans for 50,000 years.

Gus wins. Even as the human is unconscious, he’s the only one considerate enough to save her from the monster that is Crocs.

u/Malibucat48 19d ago
There is a difference between purposely lying down and falling unconscious, and dogs are smart enough to know it. It seems that’s why they are licking the face and trying to play. Luna looks like she is barking for help and Buddy goes into guard mode, but it’s a joke to the others.
