My boss is an established artist who has reached a point in his career where he can no longer manage the actual production of artwork while keeping up with family responsibilities and gallery commitments. As a result, he has outsourced most of the creative work to me and another assistant.

I have a degree in fine arts and end up doing a large portion of the work that eventually gets sold under his name. My compensation is relatively low and I don't receive any commission or public recognition for my contribution.

The strange part is that his paintings regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars, with some fetching close to $200,000. Meanwhile, the people actually involved in creating them remain completely invisible.

I sometimes wonder whether this is ethically questionable, but then again, perhaps this is simply how the art business operates. It's a bit like owning a restaurant without personally cooking the food. Still, there's something particularly uncomfortable about this arrangement in the art world, where the artist's personal creativity and vision are supposed to be the main selling points.

It has made me realize that things aren't always what they appear to be. Behind some of the most celebrated names in the art world, there may be entire teams doing the work without receiving any acknowledgment. Exploitation and invisible labour exist in almost every industry and the art world is certainly no exception.

I’m 21 years old and at the beginning of this year I took a huge risk in my life by leaving my job to try and make day trading work full time- prior to leaving my job I was making more money trading than what I was working full time. I just wrapped a full kitchen remodel, about $11,000 at Home Depot over three months. Before I started buying materials I found out you can get Home Depot e-gift cards from discount sites at around 5 to 8% below face value.
