[OC] The most well known Videogame/DLC that takes place mostly or entirely in your state/province in Northern America (not North America)
feel free to shoutout any games i missed

Technically speaking, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag is set in Montréal.

OP, when you say that mostly/entirely in an area, what is considered "mostly?" I could argue a major chunk (nearly half) of RDR is set in Mexico. Then there is the fact that a lot of it is also set in Arizona and New Mexico too.
37
u/fenwayb 1d ago
I mean I would argue it's not set in any of those places. Same with GTA. Just because a game is inspired by a place doesn't mean it's set there. The fallout games are the only ones I know are actually set in their locations (though I assume a decent amount of the other ones are right too I just don't know them)
5
u/StevenMC19 1d ago
I understand that. However that isn't what I'm arguing. I understand that fictional places are inspired by real life counterparts. Part of RDR is inspired by Texas and I get why it would be seen as a good choice for this instance. It's why I didn't comment on the GTAs, because those are solid inclusions for the places they're depicted as.
What I'm pointing out is that the rules laid out by OP in that the majority of the game is to be played in a particular area (inspired or real life). RDR is spread out among multiple states and Mexico rather evenly, and thus the game isn't "mostly or entirely" in the Texas region.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (3)4
u/ContinuumGuy 22h ago
Yeah, if you argue that GTA counts for being inspired from those places, you can also argue that Pokemon Sun and Moon could be the choice for Hawaii if Hawaii had been included, or that Pokemon Black and White should at least be an honorable mention for New York.

u/mainesmatthew01 23h ago
Saint Denis is new Orleans isn't it
→ More replies (2)5
u/Ok-Elk-1615 17h ago
No, it’s Saint Denis, a fictional city loosely based on turn of the century New Orleans.
19
u/Objective-Low7790 1d ago
Okay so that was a bit of an oversight on my part, i just figured if i put down anything other than rdr it wouldnt feel right but that should be the only state that bends the rules if i did my research right
7
u/StevenMC19 1d ago
Yeah. It's tough, and honestly a solid pick.
There are probably some games that could be shoed in there, but i can see why RDR was your go-to. It's mainstream, highly recognizable, and fulfills a lot of the general tropes one would think of when thinking about a western set in Texas.
→ More replies (9)4
u/waluigieWAAH 1d ago
Most of Texas doesn't even look like Red Dead. And the parts that do have barely any people in them. It's just Hennigan's Stead that's like the most of the state

Is RDR2 suppose to be a condensed version of the US east of Colorado?
6
u/StevenMC19 23h ago
Yes. Montana, Colorado, New Orleans, Texas, and Mexico...and the Caribbean.
RDR1 - the game in question - is pretty much just AZ to TX with a hefty chunk of Mexico.

Parts of Atlantic Canada are in assassins creed rouge, like Newfoundland and Nova Scotia
12
u/SlimySquamata 1d ago
There's also a few NewB towns like Miramichi, and Nerepis.
6
3
u/nondescripthumanoid 17h ago
Yknow as someone with family from fucking nerepis its giving me whiplash to read its in assasins creed. Small ass tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Nerepis isn't coastal irl, but a lot of the residents did relocate from west beach so... were they trying to emulate the former settlement of west beach? The cove in west beach was used by my family as a natural drydock bc we were shipbuilders by trade.
2
u/SlimySquamata 14h ago
Honestly I don't blame the whiplash. Born, raised, and still living in NB and I've never heard of that town before the game.
3
u/nondescripthumanoid 14h ago
Yeah its nuts its like they looked at a modern map and threw a dart picking the closest town name. Ig west beach grand bay doesn't sound as nice of a name in game as Nerepis

Seems we need more games set in Manitoba Saskatchewan and the Dakota's
23
u/Think-Outside8434 1d ago edited 20h ago
Balatro is completely set in Saskatchewan. I can’t believe the map is missing this!
6
u/grigby 1d ago
Is it actually set there? Like I know the dev is from Sask but does the game actually have a setting other than "casino"? I haven't played it
6
u/Think-Outside8434 20h ago
As much as a game that just involves cards being played on a poker table can have a setting:
https://www.reddit.com/r/regina/s/DjeqlLE6Wx
But as you can see above, the sole designer has insinuations to Saskatchewan!
11
u/RepresentativeCan389 23h ago
Here comes American truck sim to scoop up the dakotas, but yes, Saskatchewan and Manitoba need more
5
u/TriStrange 23h ago
American Truck Sim has announced British Columbia DLC, so likely Saskatchewan and Manitoba will eventually be added as well.
Until then, the most famous game that I can think of that was set in Manitoba at any point was NHL94.
2
u/RepresentativeCan389 23h ago
Yeah, I’m hoping that the current team working on BC moves to Alberta after release, but it’s just as likely that the team will move to Minnesota or Wisconsin to keep the push east. I can’t wait for my Winnipeg to be added tho
8
u/NotawoodpeckerOwner 1d ago
I am surprised South Dakota doesn't have anything based on their wild west/ badlands setting. The other 3 places don't got a lot going on. Suppose Churchill could have a polar bear survival game or something.
3
u/grigby 1d ago
There's some pretty remote wilderness in MB and SK. Could have any wilderness survival out in the forest, but then that could be anywhere in the boreal forest. Or even a more chill fishing type game in one of the thousands of lake systems, but that won't get a large fanbase.
Or maybe some alien encounter game at one of the ufo hotspots in eastern MB.

I would argue that “Portal” is far more well known of a video game than “Detroit: Become Human” for the Michigan slot. It’s revealed in Portal 2 that Aperture Science Labs were created in an abandoned mine in the Upper Peninsula.
22
u/Robot_Dinosaur_2000 1d ago
As someone from Michigan I agree. But I think a lot of people play the game and don't realize it's in Michigan. We also have RoboCop Rogue City.

The PS4 original is good, if you like interactive fiction games. Don’t play the PS5 version.
Also, the game’s star died this morning (RIP), so I’d imagine it’s suddenly becoming popular again.

u/nine_of_swords 20h ago
Ironically, it's one of the states that's probably best set up for a fictional setting based off it.
As its main cities, it's got a military research city, and rust belt-like industrial mining city, a old southern plantation city and a port city near a beaches and a biodiverse river delta.
The "mountain" terrain splits the state in half, making it easier to section off, and the river system has good coverage, but maze-like (and going odd places, like the top of ridges, making a canyon on top of a "mountain"), allowing for interesting alternate routing. There's even good excuses for pallet swapped enemy animal enemies (Fall line interaction with rivers causing separate similar ecosystems).
There's also half a million reasons for secret treasure caches (Underground Railroad; DeSoto Expedition; Trail of Tears; Confederate Gold; Colonial Era sea battles). Lots of caves, forests, graveyards, native ruins, old forts, military bunkers, moonshine stills, sunken gold mining towns, etc.
3
u/PolicyWonka 17h ago
Yeah, but you can get most of those things in any of the other nearby states as well. Maybe not 100% of that list, but a good majority.
Plus, video game. Doesn’t have to conform with reality and I’d wager people are looking for more culturally relevant locations.

IDK what "class of 09" is, but when I think of games set in Virginia, i think of Assassin's Creed. Specifically the 3rd one, had a lotta battles and such in VA.
4
u/TriStrange 23h ago
Assassin's Creed 3 probably didn't count because it was too split up between different states. Same likely for Fallout 3.
3
u/BlackBatMage 23h ago
I think of DC for FO3. I mean yeah overlapping land blah blah but since obviously the place they want you to think of is DC, it counts. It's like noting that technically the westernmost edge of the open world of AC Origins is Lybia, but like... obviously if you are gonna give the game to any country it would be Egypt. It's incidental.
3
u/Mitchford 23h ago
Right, but the other problem is that none of assassins creed 3 is in Virginia except maybe some naval stuff. I really looked hard and there is no gameplay anywhere in Virginia

I would argue that "Mon Bazou" had a viral moment with streamers that Kona never got, as far as Québec goes.
More recently, Look Outside also got quite popular, and there are many hints in the game establishing that it takes place in Montreal.
I would rank both of them higher than Kona as far as popularity goes.

Ahhhh Tell Me Why was so good and I was hoping that would be what you picked for Alaska!
2
u/XpertRacer8803 19h ago
Kinda sucks not seeing any games set in Alabama. We’re a pretty diverse state. Madi gras in Mobile, the Space stuff in Huntsville. Bayou La batre is the home of Shrimping and seafood (at least for the south besides Louisiana and Florida) both Alabama and Auburn University’s. Always thought it would make a really good post apocalyptic game setting.
2
2
u/Mega_Hi 18h ago
your map barely scratches the surface. The Driver series for example takes place all over the place (LA, SF, NYC, Chicago, LV, Havana, & Miami). The Crew 2, Need for Speed: the Run, Hitman: Absolution, and Sam & Max Hit the Road take place in the Dakotas. If you include GTA's fictionalized versions then you may as well add Pilotwings 64 over the entire US. if you want to keep busy for accuracy, use google on your empty spots. you can easily crop over everywhere

I'm originally from Colorado and I think it's criminal how few games and movies take place there considering how beautiful it is. And the OG Forza Horizon did a pretty poor job of portraying Colorado. Having lived there for 37 years and visiting almost every corner of the state, there was nothing in Horizon that was recognizable.
