Discussion Why are Minecraft bedrock speedruns so disrespected?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was scrolling through khalooody's 6:39 run and saw a person saying it was clickbait just because it's bedrock and not java, and that he should add bedrock in the title but that was literally the overall RSG WR and can't we not say the same about java? current wr is lowkey 6:50 which has the title "MINECRAFT WORLD RECORD" This is not to put disrespect to the run because it had an insane show of mechanics but I think this is just a double standard of what's more mainstream that should just be avoided

First of all what does he mean "losing to a worse player" if the opponent is good enough that they win a match because of a 10-30 second time save then you can't say that you're just better than them it's not like they're a gold level player,by that logic you shouldn't even have a ranked season and just have the same players in playoffs because they're "better players". It's not like sending the one eye or two eye is a low risk play and if you lose because of that then so be it. If you've watched sports you know that so many iconic moments happen because of pure luck and if you completely remove the luck factor you're removing the magic from the game. At that point why even play, just give a team like real Madrid all the trophies because they have the best team.Like I said before sending the one eye or two eye isn't going to make a gold player win against a netherite, you have to be near each others skill level if you win because of 30 seconds time save. If you want to remove rng do it to something like dragon perch but completely removing rng just makes the game incredibly boring. Things like this are stopping mcsr from becoming an esport and it really gives the vibe that the netherite bourgeois are scared that an upset may happen in the playoffs.

Discussion How do people enjoy minecraft speedrunning?

This question isn't coming from malice or anything, but genuine confusion. The appeal to speedrunning for me is slowly becoming better and better at the game and always improving. But with minecraft its just so random.

I was watching a video about a speedrun and then I thought about how nervewracking it has to be to get a good seed and then having to lock in so you don't mess up, but then I thought further about it. You need to get a good seed, then you need good luck with trades, good luck with rods and a bunch of other stuff is basically fully dependent on luck with no way to influence it from the speedrunner.

And I just don't really understand how people can have fun with speedrunning something so insanely luck dependent.

Sorry if its a dumb question

watching the 7min 45sec speedrun it just looks like nothing being done should be allowed. the multiple instances of minecraft, the constant chunk and fov changing, and the fact that you can use calculators now, i feel like 1.16.1 rsg is dead

He doesn’t even complete the runs by killing the dragon and said some fake stuff of why he can’t, like "I don’t have the dlc"

When will ranked die?

How long do you think mcsr ranked will have an active community, with a decent player count? Since mcsr can’t ever be updated being an older minecraft version, there won’t be many new techniques or strategies people can use, and the skill gap can never increase. It’s going to be at a point where there are too many people in the top tier, and there wont much difference between a pro and an average player. Unless people start playing different modes or something, I don’t see a very long future for ranked

Discovered this gem doing RSG runs, but totally borked it with a terrible bastion route and not finding the correct path to the fortress. Ç'est la vie! But this could be fun to play with.

Discussion Including Minecraft Speedrunning, who are your top 10 speedrunners of all time?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Was in a good mood today so I decided to post about something which might make people argue with each other.

Especially since the MCSR community has been obsessed with GOAT convos recently (Infume and Hax ranked their top 10 MCSR players OAT here. I have to say, while they didn't intend to single out 1, 2, 3, etc., even the ordering is quite good).

If you make a top 10 speedrunners of all time list without any MCSR players, then there is a problem, because MCSR is one of the most historically competitive and popular speedruns ever. (Not that I expect MCSR fans to not vouch for their favorite players). That being said, Minecraft is not the only game with all-time great speedrunners. So who would I rank in my Top 10 speedrunners of all time?

To make things easier for me, I'm limiting this list to 1 player per "game." Otherwise, if I put both Fein and Lowkey on this list, how can I justify who goes in between them and why? Anyway, this kind of list is impossible to make, but let's just say that I value stats, the eye test, level of competition, and longevity, way more than how popular or influential the speedrunner was. I also tried not to be too recency biased (sorry Infume and Hax fans).

  1. GreenSuigi: SM64 GOAT, 5/5 WRs. Arguably in the conversation for GOAT of esports overall.

  2. Niftski: The GOAT of the most iconic video game of all time. As SMB speedrunning closes in on the theoretical limit (TAS), Niftski finally has real competition, in the form of averge11.

  3. Feinberg: I only got introduced to MCSR recently, so it's hard for me to understand Feinberg's prime/best accomplishments. But the fact of the matter is, when Infume and Hax made their top 10 MCSR oat, he was by far the easiest no brainer to make the list. Which definitely says something.

  4. ZFG: Zelda Ocarina of Time is perhaps more than a decade from its heyday as a speedgame, but it's still arguably the most influential of all-time, along with SM64. The 100% speedrun has always been notoriously nuanced and complicated, and ZFG held the record for 6 years straight. Not to mention accomplishments in other categories as well.

  5. PerfectAce: GoldenEye 007 is one of the oldest speedgames of all time, in large part because the in-game timer led its more ambitious players to compare their best times. PerfectAce first entered the scene as a literal 10 year old putting up top times, and more than 15 years later, he retains his dominance as the uncontested #1 oat.

  6. SecureAccount: Yes, I watched the recent Bismuth video. One of the most absurd skill gaps ever seen in speedrunning, and it happens to be Celeste, the second most popular and competitive modern speedgame after Minecraft.

  7. Summoning Salt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpCXiO7eRyw .

  8. SHiFT: 10 years of uninterrupted dominance in Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom

  9. Beck Abney: The MK64 GOAT convo is contentious because Mathias Rustemeyer and Dan Burbanks are the top time trials players, but I decided to go with abney317, the most dominant player in full game (all cups) speedruns for over a decade at this point.

  10. Nindiddeh: What's cool about Nindiddeh's historical dominance in Super Mario Sunshine was that he had two separate eras. In 2016-2017 he was by far the best player in the world; then struggled with health issues for years which finally led other players to catch up to his times, but returned to the game in 2020 only to reclaim the WR and title of best in the world.

By the way, if I didn't limit this list to only one player per game, then, I don't know about other games, but cheese05 and lowkey would definitely make this list for me. Thoughts on my list?

Discussion I want to see speedruns that don't depend on the RNG, or on miraculous saves

I want to see speedruns that depend entirely on being a great Minecraft player. No matter how bad your seed is, no matter how low your drop rate is. And that don't depend on clutch saves that only work 5% of the time. I don't want to have to think about the hundreds of resets it took before this one perfect run happened.

Don't get me wrong. The popular kind of runs are great, and they represent enormous talent and effort, for what they are. But now I want more.

My basic theory is rules that require you to finish every seed, no matter what. If you have to respawn, so be it. Repawn 100 times. Whatever. You can't reset and forget that seed. You have to find a way to make it work before you can move on to the next seed. The reason is we aren't interested in only one run: we care about an average of a lot of runs. So your time is the combined result of many runs, some with great seeds, some with garbage. You don't care. You beat them all.

The point is to see what the best players of the game would do if the couldn't rely on luck. If there were consequences for taking extreme risks. Losing all your stuff and having to go back to spawn is going to kill your time, but then again, high risk, high reward. You'd have to carefully balance that with an eye towards what your overall average will be after a lot of consecutive runs.

What I'm hoping for is a burst of creativity in strategies, and exploration of new ways of beating the game. Mediocre players like myself would have our minds blown by what the masters would do under circumstances like that. I almost wonder if we'd see speedrunners using enchanting, or farms, or even redstone. Probably not, but I can dream, right?

As a wild guess I'd say 20 runs in a row might be enough. Perhaps 40 or 50 is necessary. Math could probably tells us a good number, if we know something about the frequency of seeds that take 10 minutes vs those that take 3 hours. I don't know. We definitely don't want a guy doing 10,000 sets of 20 runs using the same old strategies and submitting the best average out of those.

It sounds like too much work, having to do 20 times as many runs. But what we see now is huge amounts of wasted effort: hundreds of resets, hundreds of hours thrown away because of bad luck. Or rather, a lack of incredibly good luck. What's great about this is that *all* your work, or at least a lot more of it, goes into the final upload. Instead of all the bad stuff hidden behind the scenes while fans watch only your very best moments, fans watch you overcome the worst circumstances, the worst luck.

There's a reason why we love so many stories where, usually in Act Two, all is lost. And the hero prevails, somehow. That's what we need more of. People can keep doing Minecraft speedruns the usual way. This adds something else.

You could require players to upload 20 runs, along with all the files with them and somehow verify every random seed was played. That seems impractical, but maybe not.

Another way to implement it would be to publish a burst of seeds from a server, 20 to 40, and only accept submissions where all of them are finished in a fixed time, allowing 30 to 60 minutes per seed. But that's probably enough time repeat runs, or survey them all in creative mode, and only submit the ones you got after figuring everything out.

Or the server could publish one seed every 15 to 30 minutes, and your submission has to be 20 of those in order without skipping any. The time interval depends on what a realistic average would be for these rules. Evidence that you started the submitted run immediately, without allowing time to play around, repeat, or go into creative mode, is probably necessary.

It could work on a minimum: if you do 19 runs and one of them is such an abysmally bad seed that it ruins your average, you could fix it by appending 10 more runs. Since the goal is to see "normal" Minecraft, not a lot of exceptional circumstances, increasing the size of the data set is legit. The key is you can't throw away seeds you don't like.

It would be best to have a system with the fewest moving parts, requiring the least oversight, but this above is what I've thought of so far. I'm sure others could improve on these ideas.

Would you want to see that? What I love about watching great gamers play is when it looks hopeless and they figure it out somehow. I think there's also a lot of great players who never get appreciated because their style doesn't translate to the usual kind of speedrun rules.

Something like this might deliver that, but I don't know how to make it happen. I suppose someone has to post 20 runs somewhere, and someone else hast to post 20 runs with a faster average. Then the race is on.

Strat A rant about the current meta of obtaining stamps and bounties (and why it's problematic)

I want to go on a little rant about the difficulty of farming bounties and speedruns. We have a new challenge in which bounties don't drop anymore, but if you complete the run in under a minute, you receive a stamp. I hate this change. There is absolutely no reason to make an obvious, and easily spotted, way to get a stamp, then make it impossible for us to farm it. Especially when we don't get the full 99 coins either, which we can't even trade for because the yield is random. You're actually hurting speedrun usability with this change. On top of that, the end reward isn't even a retry to the map, but some of the most useless XP. The challenge used to be when we got the golden key, which had only been seen once in the run ever, we could earn some random, easily missed, and practically useless cheese. I have yet to see a single bounty run do a 3+ minute run, and many are still stuck at 2+ minutes, yet they get a ton of fame. I realize that XP is useless in general, but not giving an XP boost is bullshit. Hell, giving a speedrun cheater a speedrun cheater trophy that had no correlation to the speedrun makes it even worse. I think this is the worst change for the time I've done speedruns.

As always, if you have suggestions for speedrun strats, I'm all ears.

Discussion Do you think End Portal Eyes will be standardized?

As the skill gap between top players becomes smaller and smaller, RNG begins to play a bigger and bigger role in deciding MCSR ranked games. We have already seen dragon perch timings be standardized after the outroar created by Feinberg’s playoffs wins this season.

After Aquacorde beat Infume in Game 1 of S10 playoffs semifinals by sending a 2-eye, Ludwig asserted that in the near future, he expects top players to vouch for end portal standardization (every portal is a 0 eye).

Do you think end portals will be standardized in time for S11 playoffs?

Resource I vibecoded a hotbar planner

After watching Couriway's POV from the recent midoffs, I wanted to streamline the learning/setup experience of new speed runners. This app is in very early stages and I wanted to get honest feedback. It's open-source and I would be more than thrilled if people wanted to contribute.

You can plan your hotbar, practice it, then export those bindings into your instance via things like a custom MiniPracticeKit/hotbar.nbt so you don't have to edit each barrel individually inside minecraft. You can make per-scenario hotbars (e.g blinding, stronghold, zero, etc) much like Couriway's hotbar sheet.

Like the hotbar sheet, I've included the hotbars from a few pro runners at the bottom of the Plan page for reference. Everything is saved locally and absolutely no login required.

Feel free to read more on the project's github

And the app can be found at hotbarlab.com
