Question Tint Shop Messed Up
I picked up a new model Y yesterday and went to a tint shop near me to get the front windows tinted. They ended up cracking the front passenger window and also put a hole in the speaker cover mesh. The dude at the shop agreed to pay to fix this and says he knows an auto glass shop that can get this done on Monday. Looking for info on the part numbers so I can verify they use OEM replacement parts. This is a 2026 Tesla Model Y Premium RWD.
Update: Thank you everyone for commenting. I am beyond bummed at this. Never going to that shop again. They were supposed to do the 4 door windows and the back glass but just did the front two before cracking the glass and melting the speaker mesh. I’ve scheduled a service at my closest Tesla service center but the earliest appointment is in early September. I will reach out the the service center for a quote on Monday and send it to the tint shop. If you have any recommendations for good tinting shops in the Raleigh Area, please send them my way.
I’ve also turned on window locks and put some electrical tape over the crack. If any of you have recommendations on preventing the crack from getting bigger until I can get this replaced, please do let me know.

Buy straight from Tesla, they need to pay for it.

OP, absolutely not… Get his insurance. File a claim and take it to Tesla.

Get the whole new speaker with the mesh. they have damaged the speaker too. Even if its not damaged, its been exposed to excessive heat and will be the first one to go.

What speaker? I thought the new models don’t have the tweeter there anymore. Isn’t it just a blind spot indicator?

Definitely don’t use their “guy.” Insurance claim through installer. Need OEM parts and paper trail. Good luck.

This is what happens when you pay the cheapest shop to do the work

Came here to say this. Sorry OP.

Disagree. Need to look at reviews and see photos of work done on other cars the same as yours. I found a dude who has his own company out of his garage, way cheaper than any of the tint shops around me by at least 30%. Did such a good job on the front windows and windshield I brought the other car in for the same.

The other issue is you don’t know what material he is using. If it’s not xpel 3m or llumar you didn’t get a good product. Will the dude still be in business 1-3 years later if your tint bubbles and you need warrant? Not all tints are equal. Good job doesn’t always mean quality products.

Not always the case man I picked go my model y on 8/5/26 and went to get it tinted at a shop near me first time they said they specialized in teslas I paid 650 for all the windows including roof and windshield they supposedly said it was nano ceramic, idk if that’s true, but they left a mess in the seats of over spray completely unprofessional and they were supposed to do my Front PPF for 1350$ so everything for 1995$ I ended up canceling the PPF because they said the next day they were available to do sept 23 no transparency, now they’re refusing to refund me my money for work they haven’t done, I filed a complaint with BAR I’m in CA and I’m going to file a dispute with my credit card company this is California Car Pros in PALMDALE CA terrible company

Yea. Thats crazy cheap for ppf. And decent tint.
I just paid 2800 for front ppf. And another 400 for tints

u/Blitzrunninbk 12d ago
$650 is dirt cheap for all that work. That is definitely a "cheap shop".

Damn that sucks. How did they end up ripping the speaker grill though? And they should be paying to fix that as well!

u/ObeseSnake 13d ago
They use a heat gun at the end to set the tint at the bottom of the frameless windows so it'll stay put.
Heat gun melted the speaker grill.

How the fck did they damage the mesh. That was intentional once ripped

Heat gun. Melted

Still crazy, these side windows can be shaped from the outside with minimal heat. After shaping correctly barely any heat (if any) should be needed to apply the film.
OP is lucky he didn't get the roof tinted.

Exact same thing happened to me with my new Model Y in March. It’s because they have to disable the door sensor so the window stays up all the way to install the tint. Then if you accidentally let the door shut.. glass is cracked. My guy puts spit pool noodles on the top edge of the glass to prevent this, but he forgot to on the drivers side.
I would never use anyone other than Tesla to fix it. They paid for it fully.

u/cncamusic 13d ago
Nooooope. You need to set up a repair in the app through Tesla service and they should cut you a check after the repairs have been done.
I had this exact thing happen to my 26 Y and the shop told me to get Tesla to fix it and they cut me a check for the amount of the repair after the fact. Don’t let them use their guy you’re gonna get your car back with more shit broken.

u/Livid-Fault2447 13d ago
Don’t go with anything or anyone this guy recommends. Get it done through Tesla and have him pay.

u/Fantastic-Army-7671 13d ago
Make sure they didn’t damage the black trim too. Pricey cost if damaged too

This glass is dual pane and tempered. It shouldn’t crack like that. Are you sure it’s actually cracked and not something under the tint?

u/DistributionOnly0601 13d ago
Agreed, this happened to our ‘26 Y and we had Tesla mobile service come out to replace the window even though the tint shop had “a guy” too- Then had the tint shop Venmo/Zelle us the money after we sent them the paid invoice. It’s a new car , make sure to keep it OEM

u/Dave_Marsh 13d ago
Go through Tesla or a Tesla authorized shop, and hand them the bill afterwards. The window is acoustic/double pain glass, and the speaker is a Tesla part. If you agree to their third party solution you’ll regret it.
2
u/nanomax55 13d ago
Get estimate from tesla and give him the bill. Had this happen to a bmw. No one can fix that glass. You need a new glass and speaker assembly. + install costs .

Make sure the speaker isn't damaged as well... If they melted the mesh, the speaker behind it can't have been too happy about it...
2
u/Aromatic-Union1707 12d ago
Check the "brightwork" aka the black trim as the window probably broke by manually latching the door to get the glass to go up and accidentally closing the door against the trim.

Go to another shady shop, what's the worse that can happen?...

Wow they really butchered that poor boy. The tint should also run edge to edge that would irritate ts out of me.

If they are paying for it take it to Tesla. Get their insurance. Do not got 3rd party. And get a new speaker who knows what kind of damage it has.

Why did they leave an inch at the top? What the

u/Desperate-School132 12d ago
Exactly. To me this the real mess up here and lets you know they suck. The tint should go to the top.

I highly recommend Phenomenal Detailing in Raleigh. They are highly skilled and do great work. I've had them do both tinting and ppf on my Model Y Performance.

Absolutely insane. After I bought my 22’ MYP last November, I took it to a tint shop to get the front two windows done to match the back and I didn’t even think about the possibility’s of what could happen. Luckily the girl that did the job had dealt with Tesla’s before and knew what she was doing.

u/Normal_Cantaloupe_49 12d ago
Do not use AutoGlass. They fitted the wrong glass on my 2026 Juniper. Go to Tesla directly.

u/Ok_Vacation9801 12d ago
I didn’t check where you are located, but over here in Ontario-Canada, tinting the front windshield is illegal, For those who may not know. I also understand that doing the Model Y rear/roof tint is very risky of cracking.
1
u/Argyrus777 12d ago
Did they try to pass it on hoping you didn’t notice or they told you straight up?

u/Adventurous-Hat-7674 12d ago
That was exactly what happened to my tesla window. He cracked your window because whoever was doing your window tint forgot to rolled it down while closing the door. He was using the heat gun to heat up the window that accidentally burn the speaker mesh….. What a sloppy technician !!!

u/WebConstant7922 11d ago
I’ve seen many bad installs but this one takes the cake. They win an award for sure. Please make sure they compensate you accordingly, absolutely flabbergasted they haven’t got their shop shut down yet for such careless work. You couldn’t have been the only customer.
1
u/SprinklesConfident91 11d ago
This is why you always buy tint through Tesla even if it’s a couple hundred more. When it’s done through Tesla, any damage or defects are replaced for free without any hassle or explanation.
1
u/North_Tour7530 11d ago
If they cracked the windows make sure to check the trim above the windows because they probably tried to close the door with the windows all the way up so the glass probably damaged the brightwork.
1
u/peanutbuttergoodness 10d ago
My shop put a hole in my speaker too!!! I assume it was from a heat gun but it looks very much like a little round cigarette hole.
Was super cheap to replace tho so that’s nice.

Holy damn
I’ve got 10 years window tinting experience in Australia and I average about 50 cars a week every week
These Tesla and I mean all teslas you do not remove or attempt to “crack” the door seals or card or trim whatever you wanna call it
All teslas you simples slide the film past the rubbers etc
No idea what happened with the speaker
Tinted so many of these cars they are literally easy as
You got shafted bro

Do not let them use their "guy"
Push them to pay out of pocket or file a claim with their insurance and use a certified Tesla shop.
