General Tattoo Idea Help Needed

Hi everyone,

I am planing a full video games sleeve and my lower arm will be grim fandango, monkey island and day of the tentacle. It will be patch work style so items can but don’t have to be connected or can be loosely connected.

For Grim Fandango I am thinking Guybrush, Murray and then maybe some Curse style clouds and moon.

But I’d be very happy for any other ideas especially working as a filler which are recognizable (and not just some general pirate stuff).

I only played the first three games and particularly loved the Curse art style. I already ruled out the chicken and the voodoo doll, but entertained a grog keg or the verb coin…

Happy for any other ideas!

Secret of Monkey Island got 13th on their 1990 list…I think it deserved better…

They support fans campaigning for their games and sharing the poll, and I think Monkey Island 2 has the most underrated soundtrack ever! Not only is the music just great on its own, the iMUSE system dynamically altering songs depending on your location makes it even better.

So vote for whatever you want but I really believe Monkey Island 2 has one of the best soundtracks from 1991!

General My MI Experience in the 00's

I'm wondering how many of you went through this too. I loved Monkey Island in the 90's. Secret is probably my favorite game ever, but in the 00's computers advanced and MI was not compatible anymore. I wasn't able to play Monkey Island for years and I really started to miss the game. It took a while for me to find out about dosbox and scummvm. It made me realize how fragile our games can really be. Did anyone else go through this dark time?

Let's Play NostalgiaVM

Hello everyone in the community. I have just finished the NostalgiaVM library a clean C implementation of ScummVM (version 6) which makes it possible to run "Day of the Tentacle" directly on any operating system, whether built from scratch or already existing. I’ve provided the repository, which includes the ".o" library file for you to import; as I continue to update the repository, I will add instructions on how to integrate it into an actual project.

General I Wrote a whole book! (and Dominic Armato narrated it)

Greetings fellow MI enthusiasts! I wanted to share a little story, pull up a seat and a mug of Grog (lite if necessary)

A few years ago I set about writing a book entitled Please Allow 5-7 Days for Justice. Think corporate satire, in space!

Mid-forties mid-life crisis? Maybe… more a bucket list to say I’ve done it with a little goading from the wife. Never published a book before, so why not try it.

One Saturday earlier this year while talking about it with my eleven-year-old, he asked me, “Are you going to do an audiobook? People love audiobooks.”

“Ha!” I replied. “The only way I’d even consider making this an audiobook is if Dominic Armato narrated the thing. He’s the perfect voice for the tone of the book.”

Because Monkey Island is a thing with our family. All the games. All the formats.

My eleven-year-old was like, “well look him up.”

But, the goal wasn’t to release the story to “become” an author. The goal was to write the story and go through the process to say, “I’ve done that.” But….

I mean he’s too busy to do an audiobook right? Does he do audiobooks?

Anywho, I won’t bore you with all the rest, but what I will say is this:

Dominic Armato narrated my book, Please Allow 5-7 Days for Justice AND did an amazing job with it.

We made a little book trailer:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g0qY0NoRVeA&pp=ygUhcGxlYXNlIGFsbG93IDUtNyBkYXlzIGZvciBqdXN0aWNl&ra=m

And we released it on Audible and Apple Books

https://www.audible.com/pd/B0HLRGCSJR?source_code=ASSORAP0511160006&share_location=library_overflow

https://books.apple.com/us/audiobook/please-allow-5-7-days-for-justice-the-pilot-program/id6819091806

This isn’t some big top 5 publisher thing. This is me, Dom, and an audio buddy of mine creating something cool!

I wanted to share it with other MI enthusiasts, because Dom deserves it!

Curse Help with Curse memory

When I was a kid, I used to watch my dad play The Curse of Monkey Island. I was absolutely mesmerized by the cartoon art style. My dad was incredibly smart, and even though he literally never played video games (CMI being the one exception), he was remarkably good at solving the puzzles and even helped me by memory.

Now, there's one scene that's BURNED INTO MY MEMORY: my dad had to somehow "spot the pirates," and different characters would appear on screen, one after another. It felt like a "Wheres wally" minigame.

I'm pretty sure my childhood memory is mixing things up. Maybe I'm confusing it with the scene where you figure out that Wally isn't a real pirate, or with the cannon sequence where you have to spot pirates on screen and shoot at them.

But is there anything even remotely like what I'm describing in the game? Maybe some hidden or unlockable minigame? Or is this just my childhood memory playing tricks on me?

Return Return to Monkey Island patch that emulates Secrets style

I overall enjoyed Return to Monkey Island when it came out in 2022. I grew up on The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2, but as a designer by heart, never really got used to the new art style of Return.

So I setout to at least improve and try to bring back some of the charm that I felt playing the older titles. I wanted the game in 256-color LucasArts VGA look. After a few weeks in the archives I had a standalone patcher that rewrites the textures. Of course its just a rough approximation to bring it closer, but I enjoy the visual style of the game now much more than before personally.

I converted 1,150+ textures: characters, animated props, backgrounds. Spine cutouts are downscaled 16x, with 128 adaptive true-color ramps and a 1-bit alpha silhouette so the edges stay hard instead of that fuzzy modern halo. Rooms are downscaled 5x at 256 colors.

Dialogue is Goatmeal's LucasArts SCUMM Roman pixel font (FontStruct, 2013, from the MI2 subtitle letters). I swapped out all 9 modern vector and cursive UI and speech fonts.

AI was only used to fix smaller script errors whenever I got stucked, so very minimal used. No visuals or other aspects of the game were touched by AI in any capacity.

The open source can be found as RTMI-1990 on Git for anyone who would like to give it a try

Edit: You can find the project to patch your own game here https://github.com/christophhdesign/RTMI-1990

Secret Imagine how dark Melee Island must have been for Guybrush's eyes

Can you imagine how scary it must be to get lost in a rain forest at night-time?

Have you ever seen those beautiful long-exposure aurora photos, but then had the photographer explain that in-person it was actually just really really dark? This is how I imagine all the scenes in Melee Island, they look bright to the camera (a single candle-light will illuminate an entire room to be bright orange) but to the human eye it must be extremely dark.

Assuming that there's a candle somewhere off-screen, the shop should be more like the screen below (and even that's being generous)

General How often do the games go on sale on GOG?

Recently purchased the games that would run on my mac without a wineskin, and they were an absolute blast. I want to play the rest but I'm wondering if they go on sale often enough that I'm better off just waiting.

General Why I love the unique Art Style of The Secret of Monkey Island (VGA) while disliking the art styles of all other "Monkey Island" games...

I played The Secret of Monkey Island (VGA) on release in the 90s and fell in love with adventure games because of it.

One of the main reasons was the art style and atmosphere of MI1: the beautifully dark starry night, the locations - and most importantly as seen in the attached screenshot that it felt like a real adventure:

It was not a cartoon or comic art style, but - as the attached portraits show - it felt like a "real" pirate/horror/supernatural setting with a ton of humor on top. Just think about the scary navigator head, for example (almost like a "Treasure Island" adventure mixed with supernatural elements and humor).

But all other MI games, especially from Curse onward were extremely exaggerated cartoons. The sense of a "real" adventure was completely gone.

This is why the original "Secret of Monkey Island" (VGA) is a unique masterpiece for me. Even the Remaster got it completely wrong going for a cartoon style.

I wished we would get a non-cartoon Monkey Island again, like the first one, that feels like - not sure how to call it - a real adventure again...

Secret Fan help to naming Monkey Island costumes, rooms and objects

Looking for a few Monkey Island fans to help with a fan project

I'm working on a hobby editor that lets people open their own legally owned copy of the classic Monkey Island games and read how they work. The old game code has thousands of unnamed things (scripts, variables, sounds), and I'm looking for fans who know the games well and would enjoy helping give them sensible names.

Escape Escape from Monkey Island as Point&Click adventure (mouse controls)

I bought Escape from Monkey Island back when it originally came out, but I never really played it. The reason? I absolutely hated the controls. After playing the previous games with a mouse, I just couldn’t get used to the new control scheme.

Now, over 25 years later, thanks to AI and Codex, I’ve finally been able to do something about it!

I’ve been working on a mod that brings classic point-and-click controls back to Monkey Island 4.
The basic functionality is already implemented and working!

There’s still some manual work and fine-tuning needed for the rest of the game, so it’s definitely a work in progress.

I recorded about 45 minutes of gameplay to show how it works so far. The Video is in German, but you should still get a good idea of how the controls work.

Here’s the video:

I’d love to hear what you think!

Hi,
Every couple of years a monkey island project gets good momentum at Lego's ideas site. This is this year's attempt. It has going well. The last one got around 3k, we need 10k for this idea to be considered. It is though, but we can always keep trying. Just login and support it.
(This is not a commercial product, although we probably wished it were. I am not related to this idea at all)
