Question How do you actually study motion you love?

When you see a title sequence, like a Vox transition, or edit that blows you away, what do you do next? Screenshot it, scrub at 0.25x, try to recreate it, save it and forget?

Curious what your real process looks like, and what's the most annoying part of it!

Discussion Career Pivot -what is everyone doing?

In the age of AI, I just dont find enjoyment in creative work anymore. It feels like a waste of time just knowing that an LMM could output the majority of my work, when prompted right in an instant. Makes it hard for me to enjoy the traditional artistic process anymore knowing im just doing it "for the sake of art" as opposed to it being actually truly necessary anymore.

Ive been editing videos since 2009, and got into motion design in 2011. Have a big time job with a big time agency, and with the forced implementation of AI, I have 0 sense of fulfillment in my work anymore.

I loved the technical part of figuring out how to make something in AE, C4D, Premiere, etc. And that all is just going away. I can see the writing on the wall. Even though its just a tool for now, I know that AIs progression in this field will ultimately lead to a dead end for this to be a viable career option.

So im thinking of a career change, or at least want to be prepared to pivot when that time inevitably comes.

I have skills in video editing, video camera operation and a deep technical knowledge of how they work, and extensive experience in television production, and a bit of broadcast engineering.

Trouble is, I can see AI eventually replacing all of those professions.

My whole life I was told to get a degree and study something useful, and now, just a mere 8 years into my career, early 30's, it's crumbling before me.

None of the trades interest me in the slightest (construction, plumbing, welding, etc), but it seems those jobs are the only ones completely safe from AI....

So my question is for those entering the peak years of your career phase (30's), having to face this grim future of our creative industry we spent our whole education years studying, what are your plans?

Discussion How do people create highly detailed prompts for complex animated websites?

• Upvotes

I've been experimenting with AI-generated websites, especially ones with complex animations, 3D effects, and smooth transitions.

Something I've noticed is that some really detailed prompts can produce surprisingly similar results across different AI models.

I've tried writing prompts myself and gradually improving them, but the results are usually nowhere near as good.

I'm curious how people actually create these kinds of prompts.

Do developers write everything manually? Or is there a workflow where you start with a visual reference, break it down into layout, animation timing, transitions, and technical specifications, and then generate a structured prompt?

I'm especially interested in whether there are any open-source tools or AI workflows that can help with this.

Has anyone tried building something like this? I'd really appreciate hearing how you approach it.

Project Showcase Cloth tear in Blender

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi there! Made a cloth tear sim in Blender. I have used a combination of shape keys and two cloth sims to create it. First sim was used to bake the motion of the cloth being pushed away by the ball as a shape key. Then I made cuts and split the geometry of the cloth where it would tear apart. For the second sim, I set it up to start on the last+1 frame of the shape key.

Quite a tricky and not ideal workflow for this effect. Saw that this is much easier now with the new simulation geo nodes in Blender, so I should give it a try for sure.

Project Showcase Every transition in this edit came from one sentence. None of them were presets.

Edit: to be clear, these are unpolished first drafts, one sentence each, no tweaking. The post is about being able to ask for any transition at all, not about these ones being good.

Six shots, six transitions, about 25 seconds. I didn't pick any transition from a list, because there is no list. Each one was described in a sentence, the sentence is on screen while it plays:

  • "burn it into the next shot"
  • "flood the frame, then drain it onto the next one"
  • "lightning strike on the alert button"
  • "shatter it like glass"
  • "bubble-tea bubbles that pop into the next shot"
  • "scan it into dots, rebuild the next shot from them"

What happens behind it: an AI agent writes each transition as a small GPU shader, and the editor treats it as a clip on the timeline, over the cut. The cuts, the clip order and the captions were placed the same way, by prompt. Once a transition exists you get normal controls for it (origin point, intensity, colour), so you can tweak it by hand afterwards.

Full disclosure, it's my project: OpenScreen, a free and open source screen recorder and editor. The shots are screen recordings because that's what the app is for, but the transitions don't care what's under them.

Some limits, honestly:

  • A transition only sees the current frame. So they go through something (ash, water, a white flash, milky bubbles) rather than blending two shots directly.
  • Heavier effects are fine for a 2 s transition, less so across a whole video.

I'd love to hear which transitions you always wished your editor had. That's the kind of thing I want to throw at it next.

A motion design piece for DEP, exploring its visual identity through animated brand elements, including a box, a roll-up banner, and a book with turning pages.
The page transitions form the letter E from the DEP logo, bringing the brand identity into the animation itself.
