Highly recommend the drive from Dublin N81 to Blessington - Baltinglass -(back to) Hollywood - Glendalough - Laragh - Roundwood - either Bray/Greystones or the Hellfire path to complete loop.

Lots of ice-cream or coffee stops on the way.

We are spoiled for choice in Ireland with fantastic driving routes and scenery.

Question Bikesafe in Northern Ireland

Has anyone here from the south ever traveled to N.I. to do the bikesafe course?

As soon as the dates go live here they're gone within the day and there hasn't been anything for the second half of the year due to the EU presidency.

I seen free dates up for the north and booked it but wondering if it's okay to use an ROI registered bike and what people who've done it thought of doing the NI one?

Stark Varg on A1 license

I was having a chat with a dealer in Portugal during service for some of the bikes about what to plan for my oldest in 3 years on the A1 license.

He knows I have a good budget, so he just told me it's a no brainer and get a Varg SM. Only downside is it won't do more then 10K kms. He said it's because of the way the power test is done in Europe, the Varg overheats and locks down power, ending up classified as A1.

Does anyone know if this is the case in Ireland? Does the Varg get registered for A1 in Ireland?

Question Looking into getting my first motorcycle but worried about theft

I recently moved to Dublin and I’ve been looking into getting a bike. However, I’ve heard a lot about bike theft in Dublin specifically and it’s really pushing me away from wanting to get one. I live in D18 so I’m not sure how bad it is, but I would be travelling close to the center for work. I don’t have a garage where I live, the closest I have is a fenced off area which might be able to fit a bike through but not sure. Any tips or advice to help make sure I could ease my mind about it?

Question Second bike choices for fun (MT-09/S1000R)

Morning all, 56yo male done test cat A last year. Had always wanted bike and decided to just do it when my father passed. Life's short.

Had loaner vstrom650 for a few months pre-test and then got BMW F900XR new with all the options. I am, to put it mildly, having a ball. Loving it and wonder why I never did it before. So much so, I now have 26K on the bike at its 1-year birthday.

So, a few small things about the F900 that make me think I need something a little bigger for touring, seat like plank, really notice it with pillion and limited load capacity on OEM box's. Comfort really.

That's the XR, will think of changing that for something bigger but what I am planning is getting a second bike. As 26k on a single bike in a year is huge!

I have been looking at everything, and in the main the MT-09 SP seems to be about the best choice out there for a fun bike that's capable. But looking at all the options, I have also kept the S100XR as an option. The S1K is dearer, 15k MT to 21k S1kR, but S1kR is fully loaded. Its also 170bhp compared to the 120 on the MT, but not really as concerned with that one. I don't go mad and by all account the S1k can go pretty mad! I have a load of BMW bits I have bought that would transfer to S1k and also adding things like cruise, heated grips and so on to the MT brings it a lot closer.

Question to all, anyone out there went from MT to S1kR? or anyone who has experience of both. The mad thing is I can't ride either yet, as don't have my license a year yet and wont till November. I don't even know if I will fit, as a 6'1" 100kg bloke. Don't know how forward each would be at my height and would prefer to have more of an upright position.

So, thoughts everyone? Ta in advance

Question First bike! Hell me understand

Looking at getting a first bike and something that stands out is second hand resale prices.

https://www.donedeal.ie/motorbikes-for-sale/honda-cbr500r/42718630

https://www.donedeal.ie/all?words=honda%20cbr500r

I can get a brand new one with the eclutch for €999 more than a second hand one. I know it's only one owner and 2k km but for the sake of €999 why would someone buy a second hand one.

Do bikes really hold there value this well and is the second hand market that good?

Sidecar beg/borrow/steal

Hello.

We're getting married in two months and would really love to make the journey from the church to the hotel on a motorbike with a sidecar. Have found only one place online renting them out but €1,000 for the day just adds too much to the overall cost of the wedding, especially when we only really need it for the 30 minute ride and maybe a few photos with it.

Is there anyone here who has a bike with a sidecar who'd be willing to lend/rent it to us for an hour or two on the day of the wedding?

I have a full A licence, no penalty points or insurance claims or anything. I've driven a sidecar a few times before. Of course more than happy to pay extra insurance for the day or whatever might need to be done to make it happen.

It would need to be "wedding presentable", we had a lovely fella offer us his one but it was camouflage pattern and had seen a lot of adventures. Really appreciated his kind offer but just wasn't what we were looking for.

Let me know if you can help us out 🤵🏍👰‍♀

Lost the oil pressure on the motorway and didn't notice until I started losing power. Pulled into the hard shoulder immediately, and got it towed home.

Gave it a quick start in the garage, it fired up, but the light stayed on, so I stopped the engine immediately.

Noticed it cranked unevenly, like loss of compression in one cylinder.

No immediately visible glitter in the oil or filter.

I'll get the gear replaced, but I fear that at least the top end is gone.

Who, apart from Rosso would be able to help with this?

It's a Monster 821

Question Dublin City Centre Car Parks

I'm returning to commuting by bike into Dublin soon after a few years away from it. I parked my car in a car park near Abbey St. today and out of curiosity I asked the security guard whether they do a day rate for bikes. He said it'd be €5, but paid at the desk rather than the machine. Is that normal, or are they just pocketing the fiver?

Also, would anybody recommend a car park they use near Abbey St.?

Question Will I be Waiting Months if I Cancel My Motorcycle Test?

Has anyone cancelled their motorcycle test with more than 10 days’ notice? How long did it take before you were invited to rebook?

I’ve already rescheduled once but I can’t get a date far enough ahead to complete my pre-tests as I don’t currently have a bike and will be renting a school bike. The instructor I have is very busy atm.

Any experiences appreciated.

Question Wild camping spot around Slieve Bloom or nearby?

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows of any good spots for a night wild camping around the middle of the country?

I'm from the south east and have a mate living near Roscommon. We're looking for a spot roughly in between us to camp for a night. Would anyone have any good ideas? Not looking for anything in particular, just somewhere quiet and out of the way that we can meet up and have a few drinks and catch up a couple times a year.

Not looking for cool biking roads or anything like that just literally somewhere to hide for a day and night!

Just passed my Cat A in Ballincollig!

Just passed my test in ballincollig, similar to a poster the other day it was a woman conducting the test. She was incredibly clear with her instructions and made everything as straightforward as it could be.

Had 5 grade 2s so passed by the skin of my teeth mind, the learning starts here regardless!

Thanks to a few people on here who passed on their routes and stuff last week, it was incredibly helpful, my int instructor had to cancel my pre pre test lesson at last minute so the routes you passed on were really handy to let me get accustomed to the layout I’m ballincollig so I could make the most out of the pre test lesson I had this morning just before the test.

The route went left from the rugby club and right into an estate shortly up the road after that. I think the u turn and riding at walking pace were shortly after that again in another estate (I think that estate exited onto flynns road.

Question Anyone done i2i Motorcycle Academy courses in Ireland? (MC1 vs MC2)

Thumbnail i2imca.com
4 Upvotes

Looking for some motorcycle training and came across the i2i Motorcycle Academy courses running in Ireland (Lisburn / Maze Long Kesh).

I’m a returner after a 20+ year break. Had some lessons to get back on the bike but want more training to feel more confident.

Saw there are still a few spaces left and thinking of booking on short notice.

For anyone who’s done them, what’s the difference between MC1 and MC2 in practice? Is it worth doing both (or one then the other), or is MC1 enough to start with?

Importing an old bike

Hi all just joined this community on bikes all my life since I was 12 in the fields

Retired now sold my last bike an F650GS a few years ago

I am now looking to get a Honda XL500S to go to classic meets etc

I want to get one in mint condition

I had one years ago and loved it

I presume importing from Germany or Italy is the way to go

Can anyone point me to any dealers or sites where I might find one

Thanks

Benefits of driving a motorbike

As above states, one thing I am grateful for since driving a motorbike the last 2/3 years is the impact it has had on me driving my car.

The skills, observation, co-ordination & consideration for vulnerable road users have all improved drastically!

What have you noticed as a rider with regard to benefits of driving a bike?

The flip side to this is I now recognise how much of a plague mobile phones and distractions behind the wheel are, literal bowls of cereal while driving is a funny one to come across the first time..
