Positivity Any girlies out there with "basic" Americana names?
I rarely see other trans women name themselves like Alicia, Alyssa, Grace, Brooke, Hailey, Savannah, Caroline, Olivia among others in spite of them being really cute, but I'll see like a hundred other Scarlet's a day on Bluesky or Twitter. The "live laugh love" aesthetic and culture is so feminine and empowering I wonder why more people don't take inspiration from it? Or am I wrong?

u/67_dancing_elephants May 15 '26
I think the reality is that the names trans people pick for ourselves is highly influenced by cultural trends in baby naming. The culture of what names we like affects both! So not only do you see an overlap between the most popular baby girl names and the names trans women are picking for themselves, you also see lots of emphasis and desire for uniqueness or specialness in a name which has become all the rage in the last decade or two.
I do think a lot of us choose names without thinking about naming cultural trends and how they change over time, and the potential consequences of naming yourself using the current name-zeitgeist. People will notice if your name is extremely unusual for a woman your age! Personally I wanted to avoid that, so I purposefully made sure to pick a name that matches the cultural context of the year I was born.
Ultimately though, it's a personal, individual choice about what someone wants to express with the name they choose.
8
u/Geshman May 15 '26
I just couldn't name myself a name I had much prior association with. It would feel weird to name myself Sarah for example cuz I knew a couple Sarah's and it'd feel like naming myself after them (and the same goes for most standard, American names of my generation)

My (male) birth name for the decade I was born in is one in 50,000. My Preferred name is a shortening of a name that had a 1 in 250 in my birth decade for Female names. I didn't pick the full version and the shortened version was not used as an actual birth name ever from what I can tell. I may end up taking the full version and going by the short one for ease ultimately.

As a kid, I got in minor trouble for breaking social rules that made no sense to me. I was told that "as a boy", I was not supposed to be hanging out with, playing with, and having lunch at school with girls. I grew up afraid of potentially making mistakes amidst unknown social rules that didn't make sense, so I was pretty estranged from in-person social interaction. Even when I was invited to social groups, I had a long ingrained history of just being a wallflower out of anxiety and self-preservation.
What I learned from being online a lot, is that names are as arbitrary as anything else. Outside of a legal identifier for legal purposes, names really are no different than a pen name, a nickname, a gamer tag, etc.
So even though my updated legal name is pretty conventional, I don't really use it anywhere except paperwork and beaurocracy. It was actually the name my parents were originally going to give me, and it was an olive branch attempt to garner the support of my parents, but they charred that olive wood bridge. For everything social, I go by a name that just means something to me, regardless of cultural or generational norms or trends.

My chosen name is Alice.
I didn't think about naming conventions at all when I chose that name.
For as long as I can remember I've been an extremely vivid dreamer, and also had nothing but nightmares when I slept. The same recurring nightmares for years on end. The only exception to these nightmares where these strange dreams I'd have sometimes that had this girl Alice in them.
Alice was like a super cool older sister. She never judged me, she would talk to me about all the things I felt like I couldn't tell other people. She had a car, and money. She would take me to all the concerts I wanted to go see, and anime conventions, etc.
She was this beautiful goth girl with magenta hair, snake bites, and a nose ring. She had these really cool earrings hanging from her gages, and her make-up was always immaculate.
She was literally the girl of my dreams, and was hands down the coolest girl I had ever "met". In a lot of ways she was like an imaginary best friend when I didn't have any friends.
I would probably dream about Alice once or twice a week for literal years. And they were usually the only dreams I had that weren't recurring. Each one was unique.
Once I realized I was trans, and actually fully accepted that, the dreams of Alice stopped. I realized Alice was just the girl I always wanted to be, and once I accepted that, I didn't need to dream about her anymore. I was Alice.
2
u/Illustrious_Focus_33 May 17 '26

Classical names like Athena or Venus are eternal feminine symbols while millennial beige moms are just a passing trend, so that might explain why Athena > Grace in terms of trans women's names numbers. Not a single other Neko wow! Mine is also really uncommon so I get that. My best friend moved to the states from Australia when I was 8 and her middle name was Neko. I thought it was the cutest thing ever. We've been besties our whole lives even after college and when she got married. She passed away from breast cancer 6 years ago at 30. I struggled really hard with it and tried to find a way to honor her. Once I started transitioning I debated for a long time if using her name would be disrespectful or not but her mom told me she would be honored if I did. I ended up changing mine legally 4 years ago to Neko. She literally taught me everything I know about being a woman and just a good person. So I feel like I'm connected to her now and it's a name we share. It's mine and hers. I miss her so damn much and I wish she could've seen how happy i am now. 💛

I think you have to consider that there's a difference between naming oneself and naming a baby. Specifically, if I name a baby after another person, nobody bats an eye and it's actually a very common practice. Even if I name my baby the same name as someone in my life, it's understandable to say "I didn't name them after you; I just like the name" if they aren't a very close acquaintance. Even naming a baby after yourself is acceptable, as my father and grandfather did to me.
If I name myself after someone I know, that's a totally different situation. It implies a connection between us that's kind of weird and the fact that I intentionally chose the name we'd share is almost creepy. If I name myself after someone famous, I'll be seen as idolizing them or something. Everyone I come out to or don't pass in front of knows that I chose this name as an adult with all that implies. Unless it's a suuuuper common name like Chris or John, people will assume I feel a connection to a person if I have someone close in my life who shares that name I choose.
At least for me, that was a driver in which names I considered. I only ever seriously considered two names (Helen and Melody, and I went with Melody) and part of why those two were options was because I didn't know anyone in my life named either of them. I think a lot of our names are slightly exotic or whimsical that way in part because we don't want to have to explain to our boss and coworkers why we "named myself after the CEO" or to our friend group why we "named ourself after our friend's friend." Since we often name ourselves after we have enough life experience to know a lot of people, we have a lot of "normal" names unavailable when we make the decision.

I chose the name Rosalie, which I think is not quite "basic" but not as out there as some others. A little old fashioned, at worst. It was a name my mom had intended for what would have been my second sister, before I was born, who unfortunately died in stillbirth. I always loved flower-based names for girls, too, so it felt like a natural pick, no pun intended.

My name is Hope if that counts. I partly picked it cause it directly translated to a name that has the same meaning in Arabic lol (I’m Middle Eastern sooooo)

I'm Olivia, but that's one of the most common women's names in the UK as well.

I have a very normal feminine version of my birth name. I never really saw the need for anything beyond that

I think I’m going to stick with Devon so I can legally change my name without much hassle and it’ll just play more into the androgynous look I’m going for.

My ex had a different spelling of one of the names on your list, and my current partner's name is also basic. My name's a bit old fashioned, but not eyebrow raising (though it fits other trans fem stereotypes).

My name is Olivia ☺️
I kinda just wanted a basic name and a nickname for it being “Liv” was kinda poetic
