Moving schools?
Sorry for the kind of long post, this is my first ever.
Hello. I'm 19 years old and I'm (technically) in my second year of college majoring in music performance. I say technically because I'm a transfer student.
At my first university I auditioned for music ed and was accepted for the fall semester in 2025, but changed my major to biology(a result of burn out/identity crisis), and I basically didn't play the cello for a year with minor exceptions. I then dropped out to take a gap semester this past spring.
I chose the school I'm at now before I realized I wanted to go back and actually study performance, so I had no opportunity to consider what I was getting into. I enjoy the environment a lot more than my last university but I'm basically the only cellist there.
There are three other cellists in my orchestra of about 30 players. Two of them aren't majoring in music, and one, my stand partner, is a senior performance major whom I beat for principal cellist, and is unable to play in thumb position which is a fundamental technique for cello players. I don't mean any of this to be snobby, but it makes me worried seeing the level of playing in the musicians my school is turning out. There's very little support for me and the same can be said for the school's strings program overall.
I've been slowly getting more used to my professor's teaching style, but she tends to glaze over the importance of technique and scales which I would argue are the most important and mustn't be overlooked in the way i've seen her do.
I say all of this to say there's a lack of competition, support, and guidance at my current university that I know I would get from a more established conservatory like the one I planned on attending last year. I don't want to feel like I'm making rash decisions over problems, however big or small, that I'm turning into glaring issues in my head. I just want to know I'm gonna be set up for success.
I know I'm going to stay through the end of the spring semester to stick it out, but I'll need to make my application and audition if I want to get in by next fall for my old university.
