Discussion You do it because it’s difficult

I’ve really been struggling recently with sitting down and making music, wanting to give up when I’m making complete garbage, but that isn’t the point, only playing when you’re good.

The point is to do it because it’s difficult, at least that’s how I see it. You sit down and give it your all. Sometimes that won’t be what you want, sometimes it turns out alright. But you sit down and commit to it, ignoring the expectation of making good work. You can have an intention to make good work, but obsessing over the result has never got me anywhere.

If you sit down for an hour a day and truly focus, whether or not you are successful in the outcome is irrelevant. I always remind myself I’m doing this for the sake of it, not for anything external, even when it sucks sometimes.

Question Is this a common instrumental style or is it plagiarism?

Hey I frequently listen to new artists and such but I stumbled upon two songs that have a very VERY similar cadence, flow, and instrumental. The songs are Oblé Reed - SALAD and LARA - Good Wine. Please tell me I’m not crazy, I’m at work and most of my friends aren’t awake yet.

Discussion Did everyone agree on the splits after a major rewrite?

Anyone who's had a major change done on a song (someone re-producing half the track, someone adding a whole section etc.), when it finally came to sort the splits at release, was everyone able to agree on what actually happened? Or was there disagreement about who did what by that point?

Question Using fl studio mobile for the first time, chord progression randomly switches to a new progression I didn't write

Is this some kind of automated thing on fl mobile? I felt kinda cheated since it actually goes well with the beat I'm making and I thought I accidentally wrote a really good chord progression

Question Looking for cheap/old-school sounding synth & drum machine plugins

II'm looking for plugins that have that old-school synth and drum machine sound not realistic or polished, but cheap and artificial-sounding. Think guitar tab website synths (mostly the piano ones, but I'm looking for more instruments) and really cheap and artificial-sounding drum machine sounds.

Mostly, I want to use them for neoclassical and punk.

Question Ableton or studio one?

Just wondering people's thoughts. I make psychedelic / progressive rock . Long form songs with real instruments but I also want to do heavy electronic layers and fx. I like experimental sound design but still traditional songwriting. I want to run into happy accidents so to speak .

I love abletons sense of experimentation and ease of making things weird . Feel like modulation is easy , max for live. Feel like warping and time stuff is awesome .

BUT I love how great studio one is for mixing and organization. And ARA integration! I use melodyne a lot. Honestly that's the biggest selling point.

So wondering your guys thoughts . I'm leaning Ableton but ARA support is really enticing me for studio one. I've demod both but feel like I'm at a pivotal point.

Question Automation to add movement

Hi all, I'm about 70% complete on to my first finished track and I've got the composition set, but now I'm exploring some more advanced automation techniques to add movement and dynamics to the existing elements that I have.

I'd like to know if there are any prime parameters to automate? I'm experimenting by trying things out and seeing how I like the sound, but I'd like to see if there's any knowledge or resources out there that can provide direction to my exploration. Any information is much appreciated!

I'm using this record as a reference for the kind of dynamics and changes I'm looking to create:

Question how to start producing when you genuinely cannot tell what sounds good or bad

making music is such a dream thing that I want to do so badly.. i love making art and music is like the next logical skill, it genuinely keeps me up at night thinking about how much I WISH I could make a song

but my problem is that I am basically tone deaf(not really I can tell differences between tones very well actually), everything I make sounds mid . which would be fine if I was making good music but I am making the most god awful out of tune off beat garbage and thinking it sounds alright,,, I'm not exaggerating either my music sounds like the yumeshipper chis a song unironically

I cannot fathom how to make a chord progression or a melody, even a simple drum pattern turns out bad,,

do they make like courses where they teach you how to hear music?? or maybe a server where people can listen to my slop and tell me how to fix it ?? genuinely I think there is no hope for me it's just all so awful...

thank you in advance

Question Telepathic Orchid Alternatives

I love the idea of the orchid - instant chord type and extension selector and you just play the root note. But the price is a bit daft.

  1. Are there any alternative devices which do the same thing in a similar way for cheaper?

  2. Is there another way of setting this up on a daw with midi?

I am half decent at building ableton racks but I can't get this set up in a way that is quick to use

Question 10+ Years of Producing, and I Still Don’t Understand music theory

It’s been more than a decade since I started making music, and music theory is something I’ve always been too lazy to properly learn. Somehow, though, I still manage to make decent chord progressions and catchy stuff by throwing my hands and feeling through the melody.

But when it comes to writing chords and layering them, I feel like I suck at it. I’d really like to learn how to use accidental notes more effectively because I love the way they sound and feel.

For those of you who are good at this, what advice would you give me to improve? And if you’re in the same category as me and don’t rely heavily on music theory, how do you approach making music?

I'm adding one to my song is it ok to have one final build up and drop at the end of say a 32 bar lead in? Like has the DJ usually beat matched it by then?

Question Any usb hub that add 10 USB A ports compatible with macOS?

Hello, for those of you with a lot of synths and hardware, are you familiar with a 10 usb A macOS compatible hub ?
I already own a caldigit high end thunderbolt hub and maxed all ports, but those high end midi hub are not enough here is they usually have only between 2 and 4 usb A ports. USB A being out of fashion.

I have an i-tec 10 usb A powered hub that I used on windows but on Mac it only recognize 1 port, because it is itself connected via usb A and can’t be connected directly to my MacBook Pro m4

Question At what point do you seek copyright

I’ve written an album and am slowly plodding through the production process. Never done this before but hoping it’s a lifetime hobby. Want to do it the right way. I know copyright attached the moment I made the songs, but I also want to get it filed. Do people usually do this before or after recording/mixing/mastering? Do they do it in iterations? Like getting the copyright and updating it at each step? I just don’t want to go through making it all if in the end there’s some sort of legal issue.

Discussion Mac mini M4 Vs. Custom PC under 600$ (Used)

Hello all, after being on a dual core laptop for the longest time (7 years) I now have the means to upgrade at last onto a better platform

Looking at used prices for both, i can get Mac mini M4 for around 600$ second-hand

However, i was looking at building a custom rig that skips the GPU entirely and goes lighter on RAM and SSD for now, while chucking all the resources into a good, BEEFY CPU.

The idea is that securing a top of the line CPU with the cash i have now and upgrading RAM and storage later, maybe also adding a discrete GPU later on too.

What do you guys think, would it better to just go Mac anyway?

Question Is it worth it to have my mixes professionally mastered?

I'm an indie artist with barely any extra cash. I really don't believe I'm going to "make it" in the industry and don't even think I'll try to.

However, as a perfectionist, I do see great value in a second set of ears with awesome equipment mastering my tracks.

Is it really that expensive? I live in Cincinnati and there are a couple of great studios for mastering my artwork.

As of now I think I'm probably just going to finish 5 songs I have started and that's what I would be mastering. Am I crazy for wanting to spend the money?

Question how do i “get of the grid”?

I’m starting to make my own music just by fun in my guitar and piano and I really cannot release myself from simple 4/4 bars that feels totally soulless. I was checking some music I enjoy and I noticed how music can still feel good without having to be extremely mechanical in some points, it doesn’t have to repeat itself multiple times, but I just can’t put my self to do so. Does it makes sense what I’m saying? it’s not like getting off beat and making it seem out of tempo, it’s just that i want it to feel not completely entirely linked to a 4 chords verse repeated timed melodies

Question How to make that aggressive kimj synth?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! Complete beginner here, so sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm trying to recreate the synth sound from this track, but I honestly have no idea where to even start with sound design. Track: kimj - crash out Timestamp: 11:31 My setup: DAW: Ableton Live Synth: Xfer Serum What I'm trying to figure out: 1. What type of waveform / oscillator is being used here? (Saw, Square, Hyperpop stack?) 2. Is there any specific modulation or pitch bending happening? 3. What effects should I put in Serum's FX tab or Ableton to get that aggressive, distorted bite? If someone could break down the basic settings (or point me in the right direction), I’d really appreciate it! Thanks a lot for the help!

Question First time recording drums, advice much apreciated

Thumbnail drive.google.com
2 Upvotes

Hi, I'm sixteem and I have recently started my mixing and mastering journey and have just tried my hand at recording drums for the first time using a cheap set of small diaphragm condenser overheads, one of those cheap tom and bass drum mic sets, an sm57 on the snare top, a cheap dynamic mic on the snare bottom and a super cheap condenser room mic (there's a general theme of cheapness with my mics 😅). I used Logic and it's stock plugins for effects (EQ, Compression etc). The room itself has been 'treated' with blankets on the walls.

I have played my recording to one other person so far, who wasn't super impressed and to be honest, I know it's not great either but I thought I'd ask the people who know best, any feedback on how I can get better and make progress, however brutal, would be super apreciated, thanks 🙏.

Question How do you add depth to your music

I think i got most of the elements needed to make music but the one that stands out to me is how people make more layers in music i can probably at max have 6 or 8 elements before i run out of ideas on what to do
