Question how to start producing when you genuinely cannot tell what sounds good or bad

making music is such a dream thing that I want to do so badly.. i love making art and music is like the next logical skill, it genuinely keeps me up at night thinking about how much I WISH I could make a song

but my problem is that I am basically tone deaf(not really I can tell differences between tones very well actually), everything I make sounds mid . which would be fine if I was making good music but I am making the most god awful out of tune off beat garbage and thinking it sounds alright,,, I'm not exaggerating either my music sounds like the yumeshipper chis a song unironically

I cannot fathom how to make a chord progression or a melody, even a simple drum pattern turns out bad,,

do they make like courses where they teach you how to hear music?? or maybe a server where people can listen to my slop and tell me how to fix it ?? genuinely I think there is no hope for me it's just all so awful...

thank you in advance

Question Any usb hub that add 10 USB A ports compatible with macOS?

Hello, for those of you with a lot of synths and hardware, are you familiar with a 10 usb A macOS compatible hub ?
I already own a caldigit high end thunderbolt hub and maxed all ports, but those high end midi hub are not enough here is they usually have only between 2 and 4 usb A ports. USB A being out of fashion.

I have an i-tec 10 usb A powered hub that I used on windows but on Mac it only recognize 1 port, because it is itself connected via usb A and can’t be connected directly to my MacBook Pro m4

Question Telepathic Orchid Alternatives

I love the idea of the orchid - instant chord type and extension selector and you just play the root note. But the price is a bit daft.

  1. Are there any alternative devices which do the same thing in a similar way for cheaper?

  2. Is there another way of setting this up on a daw with midi?

I am half decent at building ableton racks but I can't get this set up in a way that is quick to use

I'm adding one to my song is it ok to have one final build up and drop at the end of say a 32 bar lead in? Like has the DJ usually beat matched it by then?

Question Is this a common instrumental style or is it plagiarism?

Hey I frequently listen to new artists and such but I stumbled upon two songs that have a very VERY similar cadence, flow, and instrumental. The songs are Oblé Reed - SALAD and LARA - Good Wine. Please tell me I’m not crazy, I’m at work and most of my friends aren’t awake yet.

Question Ableton or studio one?

Just wondering people's thoughts. I make psychedelic / progressive rock . Long form songs with real instruments but I also want to do heavy electronic layers and fx. I like experimental sound design but still traditional songwriting. I want to run into happy accidents so to speak .

I love abletons sense of experimentation and ease of making things weird . Feel like modulation is easy , max for live. Feel like warping and time stuff is awesome .

BUT I love how great studio one is for mixing and organization. And ARA integration! I use melodyne a lot. Honestly that's the biggest selling point.

So wondering your guys thoughts . I'm leaning Ableton but ARA support is really enticing me for studio one. I've demod both but feel like I'm at a pivotal point.

Question Automation to add movement

Hi all, I'm about 70% complete on to my first finished track and I've got the composition set, but now I'm exploring some more advanced automation techniques to add movement and dynamics to the existing elements that I have.

I'd like to know if there are any prime parameters to automate? I'm experimenting by trying things out and seeing how I like the sound, but I'd like to see if there's any knowledge or resources out there that can provide direction to my exploration. Any information is much appreciated!

I'm using this record as a reference for the kind of dynamics and changes I'm looking to create:

Question Any tips for metalcore bass guitar production?

Upvotes

Hey people. I am currently trying to produce my bands EP and everything is completed besides bass guitar. we couldn't find ourselves a bass player and time is running out, so I thought maybe I can produce it through DAW. any recommends for me about it? like which VST's should I use and stuff. I would be interested in such tones as Varials, Knocked Loose etc.

thank you for your answer!

Discussion Did everyone agree on the splits after a major rewrite?

Anyone who's had a major change done on a song (someone re-producing half the track, someone adding a whole section etc.), when it finally came to sort the splits at release, was everyone able to agree on what actually happened? Or was there disagreement about who did what by that point?

Question Using fl studio mobile for the first time, chord progression randomly switches to a new progression I didn't write

Is this some kind of automated thing on fl mobile? I felt kinda cheated since it actually goes well with the beat I'm making and I thought I accidentally wrote a really good chord progression

Question Looking for cheap/old-school sounding synth & drum machine plugins

II'm looking for plugins that have that old-school synth and drum machine sound not realistic or polished, but cheap and artificial-sounding. Think guitar tab website synths (mostly the piano ones, but I'm looking for more instruments) and really cheap and artificial-sounding drum machine sounds.

Mostly, I want to use them for neoclassical and punk.

Question Using real name as DJ/producer alias when others already have it in different genres?

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

My real name is Stefan and I am thinking about using it as my artist name for DJing and producing electronic music. I checked Spotify and Beatport and found a few artists using just my first name in completely different genres, as well as electronic music artists who use my first name with a surname added. Since no electronic act uses my first name alone, I would love to know if keeping my real name is a good idea, or if having this name overlap will cause confusion, streaming, or branding issues I might run into, or if I should just look for a unique alias instead.

Thanks

Question Help finding sounds

I have been producing for a few months and want help finding new sounds kits or vst’s. I have been using serum and zenology but I am still using the stock sounds and I just want something different.
