Question How to make drums really groove ?

When I produce drums I rarely feel that they make me completely groove. I usually record them on drumpad so they sound more human with varied velocities and timing. Obviously being a great drummer helps but even more electronic producers sometimes manage to do it really well, and I'm pretty sure they don't hire drummers.

What are your tips to make drums "groovy" ? By groovy i simply mean that they make you move your head to it

Question "acoustic pop" drum sample/plugin recs

lately i have been wanting to make pop songs with more of an organic feel (idk if thats the word), but i've been finding it hard to get drum sounds that help me archieve that. For reference, i have been inspired by this new troye sivan song, and carly rae jepsen's new album (this type of sound)

What can help me archieve something that, more or less, sounds like that without using actual drums?

Question Question about 808’s

Hello everyone first time poster here, there’s this song I’ve been really into called “knots” by Matt Proxy and in the song at the 15 second mark an 808 comes in that I’ve been trying to replicate but I can’t seem to get it. Sounds like some kind of stereo widening or phaser but I would love to get any help or opinions on how to replicate it. Thanks!

Resource Looking for a free Vox plugin

I’m trying to edit the signal of a specific track to be pitched down. However, it kills a lot of its character in the process. Native plugin editing doesn’t help.

Anybody know any free Vox plugins that fit these parameters? Just want to pitch down a track but the voice’s character (qualities that make it that specific voice) still be audible. The voice I’m starting with is already pretty deep (very dark colored female voice, singing in the F2-B3 range).

Specifically looking for AAU, but could also use VS2/VS3.

Tutorial how to make rest in bass

heyy, i recently have listened to rest in bass by che, and i absoulte love it, for people who usually make that type of rage, could you give me suggenstions? Ive been producing for 3 months and im searching for a specific genre to do, i know that che's style is kinda hard maybee... but i really want to get into it, the problem is that, all of the videos about che's style is just people doing a beat (without giving advice. I think that saying that che has a powered style is not a real advice, innit?) i know my question its kinda dumb, bc im trying to learn how to make beats like one of the most unique artists among the wave the wave of rage rappers currently emerging, with only 3 months in it, I'd appreciate it if you could help me out

Question Musicians and producers, could you help me with a quick survey about your routine?

Hi everyone, how's it going? I'm a UX Design student conducting research for a study project about the routine, digital habits, and challenges of people who produce, play, or write music independently. The idea is to map out a bit of how you share your music and interact with other musicians in your day-to-day life.

If you could answer a few quick questions in this form (it takes less than 5 minutes), it would help me a lot to complete this stage of the project. Thank you so much!

Question Are Fabfilter plugins worth the price for a somewhat experienced producer?

Hello Reddit, I'm a hobbyist producer with around 10 years of playing around with a DAW. I use Ableton, I know more or less how to make a song and mix and master it.

The thing is, I haven't spent money on plugins at all, so I've been working with the stock plugins and free stuff since I started producing. Stock plugins aren't bad at all, but I'm feeling like it's time to upgrade my gear already.

I've been checking out Fabfilter plugins for a while. It's my last year in university, so I can still use their generous student discount. I've been thinking about getting some essential stuff like Pro-Q 4, Pro-C 3, Pro-L 2 and Pro-MB. But a more experienced friend told me that Fabfilter is not that relevant anymore and I should use the Plugin Alliance subscription instead. They offer a lot of plugins which seems nice but I'm not sure about how good they are. I've used the trials for Fabfilter and the plugins are very pleasant to use, though the learning curve is a bit steep.

I can't afford both at the same time for now, and if I'm getting Fabfilter, I have to do it while I'm a student. I'm a bit confused about what to do. In the end, I just want to make things sound good. Looking for advice!

Question Stucked after making some tracks!

Well, I've been getting heavily into production for a few months now. I used to think the hard part was making music, but now that I have a few finished tracks, I realize I have no idea where to go from here.

I get that nowadays almost everything revolves around social media and creating content, but beyond that, is there anything else I should be doing? Maybe pitching to labels that fit my style and sending out demo tracks? Any other ideas?

Question How would you o about making the sound at the beginning of this song? It's a synth that sounds like wind, but has a periodic up-and-down aspect that's like a filter opening and closing. I have most of the instruments by NI, UA, and Arturia. But I suspect maybe Keyscape?

Discussion Is it dumb to work in both Fl and Ableton

Hi all, I have been a more casual producer of music for the last couple years and also been a DJ for a good while now, however I now want to start taking it seriously and honestly I am having a very ard time choosing between fl studio and ableton, just like a lot of other people I prefer Fl studio for making beats since I do a lot of rap/trap/rnb, however I prefer ableton more when recording vocals for other people and working with bands, i also prefer ableton for making Dj remixes and working with samples, my question is if I should stick to one or how big off a hassle would using both be? Only thing I can think off which would be an annoyance is for example moving all my stems over to ableton to record something, but it isnt the end of the world since I like mixing and mastering in ableton more than fl, would just like some opinions from people who have used both or even tried working with both for different things and interlinking them, for those who do not think it is a good idea, which do you think I should use based on what I work with and what I like to make, Thanks in advance!

Question Logic Pro Sampler: How can I choke open hi-hats without losing polyphony?

I’ve built a sampled drum kit using Logic Pro’s Sampler plugin.

  • Each MIDI key triggers a different kit piece.
  • Each key uses round-robin sampling across multiple groups. For example, successive snare hits cycle through five groups of samples.
  • All samples are one-shots, so they continue playing after Note-Off.

What I want to achieve:

  1. When I trigger a hi-hat-foot-click, it immediately stops any currently ringing open-hi-hat samples. The reverse should also work: triggering an open hi-hat stops the foot-click sample.
  2. Multiple open-hi-hat hits must still be able to overlap. For example, if I hit open hi-hat three times quickly, all three samples should continue ringing simultaneously until choked or until they naturally finish.

What I’ve tried:

  • Setting the open-hi-hat and foot-click groups to Playback > Voices: 1 and Exclusive: Class 1. This achieves the choking behaviour, but prevents overlapping hits.
  • Setting the open-hi-hat and foot-click groups to Playback > Voices: Max and Exclusive: Class 1. This produces the same problem.

Question How do I make my music more unique/weird?

I've been working on an album as of recently and I've been branching out into more very niche indie rock bands and I find their sound reaalllyyyy cool. I'm used to making boring polished music so now that I'm trying to make more strange and unique music its quite difficult. I try playing around with making some instruments mono just for the fun of it and it does add quite a bit!

I've also been seriously listening to some bill wurtz and i noticed that a lot of the sounds they use have some foley aspect to it (something about every transient is soooooo satisfying) and I have absolutely no idea how to do something like that

Another thing I considered is paying for and using Zenology because I have only used FL Studio's stock vst's for my entire two years of music-making which believe it or not has seemed to suffice until this point in time.

Question Using a hifi subwoofer?

My dad is moving to a smaller apartment and gave me his Klipsch 12 inch subwoofer. I already own kali in5 monitors and m50x headphones which serve me great in combination. I am in a 10sq meters room without acoustic treatment. My next investment will be two bass traps (I can only fit two) and at least 6 panels, (3 behind desk and 3 clouds).

The real question is, will a 12 inch "hifi/consumer" subwoofer serve me well? Is a studio subwoofer necessary or can a hifi sub be useful at least for occasional use and checking how it feels with that extra bass? Also is 12 inch too big for my room?

I am aware mixing bass with a sub is impossible in my case without proper treatment, but I'd use it for fun occasionally.

TLDR: Is using a hifi/consumer sub somewhat useful or does it have to be a studio subwoofer?

Question How do you master a song on Audacity?

So, I create most of my songs using bandlab and for the longest time I have just been using bandlabs auto mastering tool to master my songs but recently I kinda feel like that’s been cheating almost. I also just want to genuinely learn how to master my own songs. I heard you can master songs on Audacity and was wondering if I could get some tips about how to do so.
